I have never owned a revolver. After seeing the Kimber K6 I had to have one. Not a fan of anything less than a 3 inch barrel on handguns. He is absolutely correct about the price of the K6. I waited for a year and a half before I found a K6 3 inch brand new for $700. If you are going to compare a S&W to the K6 it should have been the PERFORMANCE CENTER Pro Series Model 640 which cost $850. I chose Kimber over S&W Performance Center.
Kimber 10 to 1. I bought a 640 before I bought my K6S Crimson Trace, because I truly don’t need THAT nice a carry gun and I’ve always liked my 642 relatively well (it’s had the action slicked up and been dehorned by Gemini Customs). The factory new 640 trigger was all but unfireable, even after 50 or 60 rounds and probably 2,000+ dry-fires I couldn’t reliably hit a milk jug at 25 feet with it. My 642 was nowhere NEAR that bad when it was stock, and 3 other 640s I tried were just as bad as mine. Maybe it’s true that S&W has gone to hell, I can’t help but believe it. I guess 40 years with no real competition makes you lazy. The Kimber, on the other hand, felt amazing out of the box (easily the equal to my custom Smith), and after about 800 rounds and 3,000 dry-fires, I can’t believe any factory double-action pull could be this good. I can shoot it 20 times better than the 640, so that alone makes the decision for me, but along with an extra round, FAR nicer quality/finish, looks, and tolerability with real .357s in it (I won’t shoot .357 in ANY snubbie, but to know that it’s at least doable is nice), there’s just no contest.
That S&W is not a 640 chambered in .357 mag, it’s a 642 chambered in 38 sp. If you want a good looking carry revolver with good sight, get the S&W 640 Pro.
@@kylewood8327 another video by hillbilly compared the weights of the 640 and kimber K6s and the difference in weight was negligible even tho the kimber held 6 rds @ 26.2 oz. vs 26.1 oz. for the 5 rd. fully chambered 640. he also weighed the 642 @ 16.1 oz. so no wonder this video has a different S&W revolver than he thought he was reviewing, as much lighter LOL!
I’ve personally have never felt a snub nose revolver ever as nice as my SS Kimber K6s! I now carry this American Made beautiful piece of craftsmanship (6 SHOT) revolver as my EDC. With all the wonderful features I was looking for like the hammerless, night sights, 6 shot cylinder, and I carried a S&W 38 spl. J- frame 442 for decades and my wife the S&W 642CT all 5 shot. But this one really shines with beauty and I even loved my Ruger SP101 I carried for years was a favorite 357 magnum for many years till now. I have found “MY” Holy Grail!#Kimber#K6s#357MAGNUM
Kimber all the way. All of what you call pretty has purpose. There is not a sharp edge on kimber for a reasons more than looks..it slides in and out of the holster like butter. The sight picture is much better with the kimber and the break to single shot is consistent. Add another round and ease in resetting to target also is yet another benefit(s).
I was really impressed with the trigger feel on the Kimber, very smooth and predictable. Smith and Wesson is great and fulfills the job intended, and does it very well. All being said, I would still have to say, if you don't mind spending the extra money, go for the Kimber. The Kimber is not only able to perform at a slightly more polished level, but is also a work of art to pass down as an heirloom. Just my friendly opinion. Great Vid!
The Kimber K6S is a better revolver over the 640. That extra round could be the game changer in a life and death situation. I don't wear a three piece suit and carry a Kimber K6S.
I found a 640 for 399 as a police trade-in. King’s Firearms offers them on gunbroker from time to time. Either revolver is an awesome choice. Kimbers are super expensive, but they DO work.
I've got both, my opinion coming from many years working on Smith's and other revolvers in general, is the kimber is the better gun, ruger on the outside smith on the inside, all done with CNC machined parts, no MIM in a kimber, I was shocked to find that. It explains the cost difference. That said the biggest flaw with the kimber is the short trigger and small trigger guard, shoot it all day and your trigger finger will hurt, at least it did for me, finger biting thing it is. If they could make the guard a bit bigger it'd be almost perfect. Still a smith fan, always will be, just one more contender to quarrel with. I'd feel adequately armed with either. Great review and great video. God bless.
For just a self defense tool, I'd go for something cheap yet reliable like a Ruger LCR, but I won't lie; I WANT the Kimber K6 DCR. I wouldn't even treat it as a safe queen, I'd EDC it, but also have more fun at the range sharing it with friends.
I'd pick the one that doesn't come with an internal key lock. That alone makes Kimber double the gun. Smith & Wesson needs to listen to it's customers.
Been teaching a long time and watch alot of gun videos. I enjoyed the simplicity of the posting. It was actually all you really needed to know, if you were looking to pick between the 2 models. I actually was looking at these 2 models before I went with the Ruger LCR (.357) for other reasons, but wanted to thank you from New York, for you basic and honest video. Good luck and keep it simple!
I think he nailed it. Value S&W.. but that Kimber is just a gorgeous and durable looking piece of steel. I have a 642 38spc... That was what he had in his hand. The S&W 640 is all stainless and it has a beefier barrel.
What I would like most of these revolvers is that they come with .45 government, stainless steel or titanium and ergonomic wooden sides, but their format is sensational in terms of safety that complements very well with a tritium sight.
I'd go with the Kimber. I have a few S&W's they are good guns, yet none of mine have a key-hole in them. I'm not a fan of the key-hole. The maker (S&W) must think owners of their firearms do not possess enough knowledge to operate the firearm in a safe manner. Thanks for taking your time making this video.
That's NOT a S&W 640! it's a 642 which has an Aluminum frame with a S.S. Cylinder and S.S. Barrel. It's obvious when you look at them in your video. Aluminum and S.S. have differences in color, and usually the shine level. Additionally I agree with another persons comment: That a better comparison would be the same Kimber ~vs~ S&W 640 Pro Series (model #178044), which has upgraded sights, similar to the Kimber.
I’m getting a Kimber K6S for concealed carry and for hiking bear defense. I want the DASA one since revolvers without a hammer just feels like something is missing but does the hammer make a big difference for comfort for concealment?
For me yes the hammer is a big deal and can seriously end you if it gets stuck on your shirt when trying to draw the gun from concealed. The trigger on the DAO hammerless is much better too
If I were going to get the Smith and Wesson, I'd go for the 640 Pro. It has way better sights than the regular 640. But it seems they are almost impossible to find. The Kimber though pricey, is readily available. The tiny wooden boot grips on the Kimber are gorgeous but not very practical. You'd be crazy to shoot 357's out of either one of them.
David Branscome that’s the truth. It’s hard to find the 640 pro. I think I’ve seen one. Being honest to I’ve only seen about 5 or 6 640s. There a popular revolver but somewhat harder to find in my neck of the woods. I shot 12 shots though the Kimber and it wasn’t that bad if you believe that. It’s a Haus cat but it’s not as bad as I was expecting it to be. If the Kimber was about 700$ for the DCR model it would be more worth it. I just think they priced theirselves out of business with the 950$ price tag
I have the 640 and paid $720 new 12 yesrs ago. I'm 77 with arthritis in my hands and 357s is no problem. I've owned many smith and colt revolvers over the yesrs and thr 640 is the smoothest of all. Easy and predictable to stage. It's carries easy all day. Fits my med. hand perfectly. Only 5 rounds so I carry a backup gun plus speed strips. It's not a performance center gun but I love it just stock.
Great comparison all the way until the end and then ya kinda dropped the ball a little bit, but just a little. I agree the S&W is the better buy if you just consider the ability to point at something right in your face and put rounds on target without aiming, trigger control, recoil management, etc. If the target is just a little bit away and you need to take a headshot or shoot someone, or something, that is near other people....well shit, now you have to aim (Kimber better sights), take an accurate shot (Kimber better trigger), and possibly follow that shot up (Kimber better recoil management). When you take this into consideration the next question you need to ask yourself is what is your life and those around you worth? Spend twice the money, if you are able to, and get the better built and tuned gun!
If I do recall correctly on this video, I was comparing the price points on both guns. Is the kimber twice the gun as the 640? I’m not sure. It’s very nice. Very very nice to be honest. But is it twice the gun as the 640, I’m not sure. I believe for what these guns will be used for, which is self defense, at the price point, I believe I’d rather have the smith. If the kimber was priced more around 600-650, I’d say go with it, but at 400-450 during normal times, I think the smith is a better bang for your buck, but, if you want quality and something that’s also eye candy, the kimber is the way to go! I hope this can clear up some stuff haha

WARNING! Many years ago, I purchased a Kimber K6s and it was one of those that ended up with a broken firing-pin. I returned it to Kimber and they replaced the pin. Recently I bought a Kimber K6xs and loved it until after 120 rounds of +p (and only dry-firing it using snap-caps) you guessed it, the firing-pin broke. Now, I was worried about using my original K6s with that pin Kimber replaced. I found a website (TK Custom) that makes upgraded replacement firing-pins for the Kimber K6s and purchased a replacement pin and had it installed by a gunsmith. I now have that gun working fine and stopped worrying on the reliability factor. Because of the broken pin in the K6xs, I will be returning to purchase another pin (I will not be returning the gun to Kimber) for the K6xs. I am not the only person with a broken firing-pin on my new K6xs, there is another firing-pin break with a K6xs talked about at Buds Guns in the “community” section. I feel safer buying a new well-made pin and paying a gunsmith to put it in.

That is not a S&W 640....that is a model 642 Airweight. Poor review.
Frankie Chandler I used it as a place holder, I’ve owned 5 640s but I didn’t have one at the time I made this review. Sorry you didn’t like it
Kim er is not selling those guns. Hell smith and Wesson is not selling a bunch either.
I'm pretty sure that's a 642
It was, it was mainly to show the difference between them
seems like the better comparison would be the 640 Pro vs the Kimber
If I’d had a 640 pro I would have done it but this is the only one I had. Thank you for viewing my friend!
PRICE PLEASE!!
Creative Jazz Pianist Robert Rubino whatcha mean haha
Off the subject but i have yet to see someone shoot the camera on a video. It would be too embarrassing.

That’s not even a model 640........

I was using it as a place holder. I’ve had multiple 640s before in the past

Come on man you don’t even know what you have in your hand that you’re reviewing. That’s a s&w 642. 38 special only. Close to the 640 but also pretty different
