Definitely making this, but I do my roasting in a cast iron dutch oven. Since its cast iron it can be used to brown (fry) meat on stovetop first then add veggies and into the oven.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_oven this is the cooking pot I am referring to, a deep bare cast iron pot with three legs and a wire handle, sometimes called a scout, campfire, or chuckwagon pot. They along with a simple cast iron pan are the greatest cookware ever. (Just don't let Lauri crush it)

The browning gives it so much more flavor. Just let it brown and don't turn too often. My Czech friend would make Hungarian Goulash soup this way.

This last summer we took the three younger children. It was a wonderful experience for them. My daughter will love this video too! Keeping some traditions and renewing others! Yay!

Yep, this is a universal recipe. I've been making roast/stew in the slow cooker very similar to this. I've never mixed pork and beef, and I usually throw the potatoes in the pot to cook with the meat and veg. If I happen to have some celery, I usually throw that in, too.

My mom (from Finland) just said she used the Crock-Pot to make traditional barley porridge, and served it with plum soup. That's a finnish winter/xmas time dish for you to try. (But don't ask me how to do it, I have no idea 😂😇😳 )

Hey Anni, getting hungry just looking at this! I make a similar American dish in a slow cooker (crock pot). Maybe the difference is we cook the potatoes in with the meat, but in America a beef stew over smashed (mashed) potatoes is called Shepard’s Pie. Also, it’s typical to put green peas in with that. I can’t wait to visit. Maybe one day we can cook together, as I also love to cook! Moi moi!

We make something very similar here in the US called Pot Roast. We cook the same things in a crock pot (Usually brown the pot roast meat first but not always) but we also cut up potatoes and put them in as well and let it slow cook. Usually start it in the morning and by dinner time it's ready. Great video!

Kiehauta kuorittuna riittävässä määrässä vedessä kymmenen minuuttia, laita sitten uunivuokaan, jossa on juuri sen verran öljyä, että pohja peittyy ja paista tunti 150 asteessa. Lusikoi puolen tunnin kuluttua hieman kuumaa öljyä ja käännä perunat ympäri, jotta ulkopuoli rapeaa. Toivottavasti te nautitte.

Here in America we use a Crock Pot or Slow cooker. That would be a perfect recipe to fix in a Crock Pot cooker. It doesn't heat your cooking area up and cooks at a lower tempature for a long time makes cheap, tough kinda of meat very tender and flavorful. If I make this in the Crock Pot slow cooker U will send you pics.

Looks like a tasty and easy dish to make. Thanks for this.
I liked the 'smashed potatoes' :) Have they been in the press ? :D
We say 'mashed potatoes'. You might smash them knowing Lauri, but we just mash them :)

@@Dwarf19864 They should do smashed potatoes :) Hit them with a hammer, or better still, put them in the Smashinator 5 million, hehe. Something Lauri would do. :)

Hey guys - yes that's so easy, but ... it could be so much better! No garlic? OMG just adding garlic would add so much flavour! I know browning the meat by frying it takes a lot of time, but it also adds TONS of flavour as well. In Canada, we would typically add peas near the end and thicken the gravy with a roux and probably use stock instead of water. We also can't buy a mix of beef and pork and have to buy seperate packages of them. Looks delicious though and you just made me really hungry! MMM!

I always make Karelian stew with garlic and also fry the meat a bit before mixing all the ingredients. Add red wine (sometimes) with the water too to give it even more flavour.

Of course you can add garlic, but it´s not a part of the original recipe. :)

Not a lot of herbs and spices used in Finnish food but I live here and the Ukranian in me can't help but add garlic to everything hahaha it's not illegal, just not traditional ;)

How many servings did you get from the two glass casserole dishes? Looked like enough to feed 6 to 8 people. (Or should I say 🌲 to 8.) Moi, moi. 🐱 and Meow!

Looks pretty good! I've always just used one bay leaf in a dish, but I think I'll try adding more next time. Also, I just noticed the "clickbait tape" on the microwave. :-D Nice touch!
