Definitely making this, but I do my roasting in a cast iron dutch oven. Since its cast iron it can be used to brown (fry) meat on stovetop first then add veggies and into the oven.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_oven this is the cooking pot I am referring to, a deep bare cast iron pot with three legs and a wire handle, sometimes called a scout, campfire, or chuckwagon pot. They along with a simple cast iron pan are the greatest cookware ever. (Just don't let Lauri crush it)

My mother made this dish as I grew up in "Little Finland" (a part of Michigan with a lot of Finns). We simply called it "Two Meat Stew." I could smell her cooking as I watched this vid. Thanks for the memories. ;_:
Yep, this is a universal recipe. I've been making roast/stew in the slow cooker very similar to this. I've never mixed pork and beef, and I usually throw the potatoes in the pot to cook with the meat and veg. If I happen to have some celery, I usually throw that in, too.
My mom (from Finland) just said she used the Crock-Pot to make traditional barley porridge, and served it with plum soup. That's a finnish winter/xmas time dish for you to try. (But don't ask me how to do it, I have no idea 😂😇😳 )
Thank you for another Finland Friday recipe video! I love seeing how other cultures prepare different food dishes. I will make this for my family along with Finnish pancake for dessert and try to send a pic!
Thank you so much for posting this ... I found it today, and it was the perfect trigger for a lunchtime shopping trip in Australia, and a few hours in the slow cooker. The only addition I made, was a little bit of chopped parsnip, and a teaspoon of allspice. Perfect dinner after a busy afternoon. Kiitos paljon, Anni!
Karelian stew is even better when you use many kind of different meat's, like couple week's ago we had Karelian stew made of pork, beef, rabbit, moose and black grouse meat. With mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam it's one of my favourite foods.
Outstanding!!! That is similar to American roast, carrots, potatoes and onions with spices slow cooked at 200F for 6 hours! Great video! Keep those recipes coming😎🤘🏻
Hey Anni, getting hungry just looking at this! I make a similar American dish in a slow cooker (crock pot). Maybe the difference is we cook the potatoes in with the meat, but in America a beef stew over smashed (mashed) potatoes is called Shepard’s Pie. Also, it’s typical to put green peas in with that. I can’t wait to visit. Maybe one day we can cook together, as I also love to cook! Moi moi!
Enjoyed the cooking show and getting to see your culinary skills. I bet that is really good on a cold evening for supper ( that is Texan for dinner). I think I may just whip up a batch next Monday for our expected first freeze of the winter here in Dallas, Texas.
OK Anni, you made me hungry for karjalanpaisti! It is excellent winter food, when it is cold outside and you come from outdoor adventure it gently replenishes your strenght. Hope you have a nice day, let's see soon! 😊😊🌺
We make something very similar here in the US called Pot Roast. We cook the same things in a crock pot (Usually brown the pot roast meat first but not always) but we also cut up potatoes and put them in as well and let it slow cook. Usually start it in the morning and by dinner time it's ready. Great video!
Gary , roast beef and stew are 2 different dishes. The owner of a manor house would eat roast beef (expesive cuts) and the tenants would eat stew . Now stew has become an egalitarian dish
a traditional Saturday in my mother's house was a big pot of tomato pasta sauce would be put on to simmer all day to go with the home made pasta we would make that day, the pasta and the sauce would be eaten for Sunday Meal. usually with a roast chicken and greens salad.
We make a similar food in the USA called Yankee pot roast. Only real difference is we put the potatoes in with the dish for the last half hour or so of cooking so it's all in one dish at the end. Some people drain off the juice and add heavy cream or milk and cornstarch to make gravy.

Kiehauta kuorittuna riittävässä määrässä vedessä kymmenen minuuttia, laita sitten uunivuokaan, jossa on juuri sen verran öljyä, että pohja peittyy ja paista tunti 150 asteessa. Lusikoi puolen tunnin kuluttua hieman kuumaa öljyä ja käännä perunat ympäri, jotta ulkopuoli rapeaa. Toivottavasti te nautitte.
