The table is pine and will yellow/orange over time. You could go two ways: if you stain it a bit gray, it will look like aged teak- like in many expensive gardens. You could stain it dark- ZAR makes good stains. They have a great midcentury colored Modern Walnut. They also have a darker walnut color. If you don’t cut the legs off, burying them could be a problem unless the legs are pressure treated lumber. I would give them a good coating of a marine varnish. You can just do the part that is getting buried. Speaking of marine varnish, if you want the table to withstand the elements, it’s a good choice! I can’t believe how perfectly that table fits! Love your channel. ❤
Yes was going to comment this, don’t bury the legs the wetness of the soil will rot them over time. The hardware store has this cap that is meant to go over fence post. Maybe if she put that on the legs she could bury it a bit without the wood being directly in contact with the soil

I do a lot of woodwork myself. Pro tip- don’t touch the raw sanded wood with your bare hands. You risk leaving handprint ghosts because of the oil in your skin, and these ghosts won’t show up until the end after you’re finished staining and put your finish coat down. Learn from my mistakes lol. Special walnut is a great mid tone wood stain color that is neither orangey nor has any trendy gray tones.
I like that idea of walnut or maybe natural no gloss stain. Also, even though gray was so trendy, a watered down gray paint might be lasting(?) and would be fun with mismatched but one-color (a fun color) chairs (whenever she figures out the height). If in shade, black would be fun, but not if it will be in sun when she wants to use it (hot).
A stain primer can help solve the handprint problem. It also helps even out the stains, making it look better/professional. Of course, it will require another round of sanding, but it will be worth it, Paige! 😂
Also, that sanders very good I’m gonna get one. I just have a belt sander. When I’m in a place like that that’s that big I’m just overwhelmed by everything and I end up not getting anything

You get the wood wet after the first sanding to cause the grain to ‘pop’ up. The water gets into the freshly revealed wood fibers which causes them to swell up just a bit. This makes it easier to then sand to a smooth finish on the final round of sanding. Gorgeous fit for your backyard!!
@@wasselpa Yes, I think a natural stain that will neutralize the orange tones that would otherwise come out when you seal it. I know this is not the first video with your chairs but just have to say LOVE them! The wrap around wood detail is so interesting. Love that you are making the most of a tiny outdoor space - we only have a small balcony but I cant wait until spring to start redoing it. It's currently -4 f. where I live so....might have to wait a bit :D
I guess it depends on when you’d use the table the most. If you’re planning on gathering friends during an evening, then I would go for a nice moody dark stain. It would contrast nicely with the fence. You could always go bold and add darker stain every other board on your fence to tie it in…I just think dark would take it up a notch from pine “picnic table” vibe to groovy “hangout with friends” vibe. Candlelight, vintage table runner…wine?😏
I would wear a dust mask when sanding, and an apron also, as the dust will get all over yr clothes. Instead of wet wiping I would vacuum the dust with a soft attachment so as not to leave plastic marks from the vac. Start with the 80 then do the 120. But since it is a soft wood, maybe starting with 120 then going to 220 would be better as soft woods tend to leave marks from the sanding. After sanding is complete, vac again and go over with a tack cloth-a sticky cheesecloth u can get at any paint store. Wipe then unfold, wipe again, unfold, etc until done. Dust will have accumulated in the space between the boards so be sure to get that. Dust is considered the enemy of a good finish generally. Sinking the legs means they will rot and pretty quickly, maybe 2 years. Also the end grain acts as a capilliary to soak up more moisture than the top grain. Sinking could be a prob also if you want to move the table for a party and then you have holes ppl could trip in. One person suggested marine varnish but I wonder if applying tar to the bottom of the legs would be better. I happened upon a nice finish once by applying a stain sealer on pine then sanding. The hard part of the grain went natural whereas the soft parts stayed white, but overall gave the wood a nice look was warm and easy-but ya gotta sand!! I could go on but I'll stop here cuz you are getting lots of good feedback. Loved the vid!!
I love the idea of a black stain, especially with the fence in the background. Like you said you don't wanna change any permanent features of the house since your renting so I just feel like the black would compliment the colors you already have to work around back there.
This table is pine, which can become blotchy with a stain and pulls yellow. I’ve found that Varathane Gel Stain in Kona looks really nice. And don’t forget to do a outdoor poly topcoat on it to protect the wood.
I like watching you do things like “wipe down a table”! The whole process and the honest step-by-step of you figuring things out/what you like. A bench on one side would be a great space saver 😉 Always excited for new videos! Would love to see an outdoor patio Inspiration video. I know your knee deep in house stuff but now that the weather is getting warmer in California, I’m spending more time in our backyard! I need some inspo for a California midsize patio space for entertaining!
the water between sanding raises the grain of the wood. so basically the lumber absorbs the water and lifts up some of the surface, so if there are dents or uneven surfaces you can then sand it over again to make it a more even finish
Cut the legs if they're too long, but don't bury. If you can find 4 small ceramic tiles, it would be nice to put them under the legs for more stability and it would help preventing from humidity going into the wood. Two other things : For the table, I would go with a similar shade than the fence behind. I feel it would make an easy choice to make it more cohesive and natural. This brown compliments the AMAZING green wall of ivy really well. With a bench on the fence side and black metal chairs around, I feel it'd give an elevated yet simple look to the space. I also would highly recommend using both a conditioner for your wood before staining it (to limit the contrast between the wood and the veins, which makes it way better looking) and after having the table stained and cured, you should give it a coat or two of spray can shellac to make it resistant to stains and weather (at least on the top and sides of two top planks)
Amazing table!! I would have painted it in a weather resistant color, like a dark dark green. A relatively glossy color that is easy to wipe off!! In Sweden, the shops recommend "window paint" for outdoor furniture. Turns out soooo good from experience. :) maybe match with some nice iron chairs or something! xx
i love that you just go ahead and do it. i know it does not normally rain a lot there but the legs would do better on even ground. if you have 4 of those slate stepping stones place them under each leg after moving away the gravel, you don’t want it directly in the ground and it’s a bit unsteady as it is. i’d stain it a darker color. you did wonderfully so far. oh and i love those chairs in the living room!
I could spend all day at that antique shop! I hope you go back with a friend and find some things. Congrats on getting a bed to sleep on and a table that fits so nicely in your outdoor space. I can't wait to see the chairs you find for your outdoor dining table and then how you prop style it. btw, your friend did a wonderful job on your makeup. The eyeshadow and eyeliner highlighted your beautiful eyes without overdoing it!
I used ebony stain on a vintage bed frame and I freaking love it! It's black but still shows the wood grain. BTW I am obsessed with those chairs in your living room.
I loved watching you sand a table. I live alone and like to have music or videos or tv on all the time for some background noise. This was perfect while I cooked dinner. Felt like I was cooking for a friend!
I would go dark brown for the table, but even if you choose natural wood colour it will be nice! It’s cool watching you sanding the table I want to do sand mine now.
Paige, he did a nice job with your eyes. That's all you need it in a neutral lip maybe slight blush on your cheeks. You have a good canvas? Totally agree with you I prefer wearing no make up myself. I love Gravel I don't like pavers, blacktop or concrete. Gravel is my preferred. I'll never paint the stockade fence again I'll leave it as is natural color so it blends in with the branches. That house you're in looks like it's well appointed. The Ivey fencing is beautiful.
Honestly, I'm loving binge watching your videos Paige. I love how real and authentic you are, nothing fake about you at all especially for someone living in L.A and with a RUclips channel. I saw one of your vids posted nxt to Kirsten Dunsts home tour one and ended up watching one of your critique vids and continued :D ... P.S .love, love your friend's place in Bordeaux. Also loved your advice on a career in prop styling. ❤️ You're so cool 😎
Dark for sure, would balance out the colours in the yard well. You can use a blowtorch to scorch the wood, sand again, then stain a nice dark walnut colour. I did this on my bedside drawers and it looks great. (not a professional). Love your vids, thanks for bringing such real energy to the internet. You da bomb. 💖
With the tight space, instead of regular outdoor chairs or bench that can be super wobbly, opt for stackable stools so they can easily tuck under or be stacked in a corner. Less cumbersome and easier to maneuver if people need to squeeze in and out to use the bathroom and whatnot. That outlet placement is so handy as well, you can easily hang string lights above!
curious what you think of mirrors in outdoor spaces. would you ever consider using one by your new table to make that little corner/entertaining area feel bigger?
beautiful table! i think it will look great with any stain, and i also think you could distress it a bit by just wacking the edges with a hammer, to give that more antique/weathered farm table look
natural wood for sure!! the beautiful thing about wood in outside spaces is that it will age and change, a few years from now you will be able to see maybe a lighter spot where you always sit and drink your morning coffee because the sun hasnt reached that small part of the wood as much as everything else. and for seating i would look into HAY pallissade for contrast, especially the bench against the bush (if outside the budget IKEA and HAY made a similar collab a few years ago). and i would also ask the landlord if its possible to get the fence repainted, looks like it needs a new coat. love the space!!
Hi Paige, I think the table looks great in that space! I would personally go for a natural stain AND I would sand and stain the wood fence in the same way (if your landlord greenlights that for you)
I’m happy enough to watch you sand a table! If it was my little space I’d start by painting the fencing black, I’d stain the table a dark walnut colour and add some posts to the bottom of the legs to avoid damp damage (or just use marine varnish as suggested by some clever viewers here). I’d use two benches either side that could be tucked under when not in use and cover them with cushions for comfort when you have visitors. Some festoon lights overhead, add candles and lots of alcohol, swing an invite my way and shebang, party in motion 🎉
you're adorable and so fun to watch. for whatever it's worth, i think you should use two different vintage bar stools inside. and i know you just recovered your interior seating but so wish it was in a deadstock, vintage plaid or other intentional pattern. and if you get tired of your sofa fabric, an ombre with texture would be a great way to celebrate the shape and period of the piece. xo
I love natural wood, I'd do a natural stain personally. Also I sent this to a couple friends because you and I are SO similar. The superhuman strength when I just want to get something done, the lack of patience, and then things still turning out great despite my ways! lol. we also have very similar taste in home decor.
I find you endlessly entertaining. It reminds me of when I got my first place, bought power tools & did random stuff to put my place together. I miss having my own place sometimes so I'm living vicariously through you- lol. I vote for a dark stain like walnut or something.
Whatever you do finish the table first since it's outside, pick your color or stain then put a really good poly on it so it won't ruin. Great score on the table. I personally like dark wood. Anyone that has a problem with how you cut your onions, well 🤔
Great table for there! I would try and shove it deeper in the gravel, before cutting it. You know, right onto the solid ground underneath. It would one stand more stable and second come deeper/lower. Depending on how deep/thick the layer of the gravel is, it might be enough hight reduction, if that makes sense.. (And since you are in LA, where it rarely rains, you can do it, no worries.) Regarding stain I would do either some red tone, like those dry avocado leaves on the ground and the fence etc. or a grey tone like the stepping stones.
Hi Paige, big fan here you have inspired me so much to stop with the all painted white and now I’m appreciating natural wood again. Silly question- where is your white oversized hoodie from? It look like the perfect hoodie!
I think I think I would do a dark grey stain. Kinda depends in away on chairs. I would get those first and then decide the stain. Bench on one side might be nice and then you could scoot back when you don’t need seating.
I recently stained some pine planks a nice dark walnut color, they turned out beautifully! I used a cheap stain honestly.. I did however used a wood conditioner prior to staining which I would highly recommend. I love the table and I love the way it fits in your space❤️
Wood stain is always a good choice. You could also paint it to match your fence or complimentary color of "picton blue" against your rust'ish fence color. You look like you're having fun with your new place!!
Nice size table for that spot. Using sandpaper: you use the heavier sandpaper first, it has the lower number. 80(coarse), 120 (Medium), and 220 ( fine) and work up to the higher number of finest grade sandpaper. It will give you the smoothest feel. A tact cloth takes off the dust before you stain or finish. lightly hand sand with the finest paper between coats. Your make up looked great.
first of all: I love these type of videos, anything you put out is great, thank you! secondly: I have a question. I never see any (prop) stylists credited on AD videos. Would love to know why!
Better you sanding a table than I… I bought the machine and my hands did not stop aching for days. Perhaps it is a good idea to wait with deciding which stain until you have found chairs? Sinking the table into the dirt seem a great idea, because gravel seems to make it a little wobbly anyway. I’d love a light stain, with just enough green/grey in it to counteract the remaining orange. Out in the light it will get darker all by itself.
My first thought was staining the table black. Then I thought a nice, earthy, muted, medium-light green would be nice. I might even make the table legs a different (not clashing or contrasting) color than the top. However, if it were me, I’d select seating and *then* decide what color I’d want the table. Do you want a bench, like some people suggested? Do you want matching chairs? Mismatched chairs? Wood? Metal? I am definitely not on the ‘everything green’ bandwagon, but when I styled my mother’s outdoor furniture 4-5 years ago I used medium-green accent pieces and it came out so nice. Greens and blues are great for outdoors. 🥰
if you intend to use the mattress for longer on the floor check if it's made to be used on a hard surface. Laid my first mattress that wasn't up for being put directly on planks flat pretty fast the second one never gave me a problem. also ventilation or else you'll get mold surprisingly fast. like futons you either make sure it is a little higher than the floor and gets airflow or you pick it up and let it air out that way.
Hi Paige! Nice that you take us along with the making of your home. I enjoy watching your diy projects, you are so funny and authentic, (you remind me of myself, I am also a bit impatient and hands on when I have something in my mind. Last weak I broke my tooth when I opened something with them, so be careful, dentist bills are high 😉). Anyway, about your table: great find! I would stain it with a light, I guess natural stain. But the charcoal (sorry english is not my mother lanuage) sounds pretty chic aswell. Curious to know how you are going to hide all the cables etc near the outside stairs. Well done girl!
You wet the wood to raise/swell the grain so you can get a smoother finish! table looks great, i think id go for a darker finish. possibly even super dark like a dark oak. I think as long as its different enough from the fence, you're grand. Excited to see it dressed up!
You could go dark or light depending on the mood you're trying to create. Since the wood leans toward orange, you could do a 50/50 mix of white paint and water, brush on the table then wipe off. The white stain will tone down the orange but still let the wood grain show through.
Love it! Personally I would go for a colorless stain or one with a *slight* white pigment in it (sometimes the natural oils brings out the warmth, hit or miss depending on what you want). Would also consider how much sunlight the table gets as it will lighten it. So if you go for a darker tone I would personally only go for a neutral stain, not too warm.
Super score on the long, skinny table! I can’t wait to see what you do with the outside. I think I would go dark, maybe even black as to not clash with the fence? Or go dark with an assortment of black eclectic chairs to break it up 😊

Would love to see an outdoor patio Inspiration video. I know your knee deep in house stuff but now that the weather is getting warmer in California, I’m spending more time in our backyard! I need some inspo for a California midsize patio space for entertaining!
In this case, I would definitely go with a black table. Surrounded by the wood fence, the floor and plants, this could be a good statement piece.
the water between sanding raises the grain of the wood. so basically the lumber absorbs the water and lifts up some of the surface, so if there are dents or uneven surfaces you can then sand it over again to make it a more even finish
The can light is awesome!
:) maybe match with some nice iron chairs or something! xx
The chairs in the living room look so beautiful 😭
i love that you just go ahead and do it. i know it does not normally rain a lot there but the legs would do better on even ground. if you have 4 of those slate stepping stones place them under each leg after moving away the gravel, you don’t want it directly in the ground and it’s a bit unsteady as it is. i’d stain it a darker color. you did wonderfully so far. oh and i love those chairs in the living room!
Always helpful to have a friend to bounce ideas off when looking/buying in a massive place.
I’m leaning ebony, too
Steelwool + vinegar solution also works the same way!
Love the idea of black or darker tone.
Yes stain the table dark brown - and I'd paint the back fence a really really dark green! I love everything you do on your videos Paige x
Love that little harvest table!!! So perfect for the space! Marketplace can be so good!
Another engrossing video. Thanks Paige! You never get old. Can't wait to see how this space turns out. Glad you have juice for the lighting.
Standard height for dining room or patio tables is 29-30 inches high. If you get it to that height, most outdoor chairs or benches will work.
I’m loving the house videos especially watching you do home improvements again! Always entertaining 😄❤️! Miss the Goo.
Heck yes. Of course I love watching you chop onions and sand your table. I love your aesthetic so, more of anything please and thanks….
I love the lamp in the corner that was shown during 3:32 , so cute🤍
it’s a lightolier!
natural wood for sure!! the beautiful thing about wood in outside spaces is that it will age and change, a few years from now you will be able to see maybe a lighter spot where you always sit and drink your morning coffee because the sun hasnt reached that small part of the wood as much as everything else. and for seating i would look into HAY pallissade for contrast, especially the bench against the bush (if outside the budget IKEA and HAY made a similar collab a few years ago). and i would also ask the landlord if its possible to get the fence repainted, looks like it needs a new coat. love the space!!
♡ the lamp/mini pedestal ♡
Thank you!
Living for these home updates.
Yes..enjoyable..watching the table transformation. Think you might need to seal it or something? For weather, rain, etc.?
(And since you are in LA, where it rarely rains, you can do it, no worries.)
Regarding stain I would do either some red tone, like those dry avocado leaves on the ground and the fence etc. or a grey tone like the stepping stones.
Bench on one side might be nice and then you could scoot back when you don’t need seating.
... and tile could be very sweet on the outdoor table top.
Love watching the sanding and idk why
It will be so cute, if you will put some painting on the wall outside, near to the new table (just on some nail, so you can take it off easy)
first of all: I love these type of videos, anything you put out is great, thank you!
secondly: I have a question.
Out in the light it will get darker all by itself.
love the table - I don't have much staining experience, but a natural oak tone came to mind - charcoal could be cool too!
I loved the way you cut the onion no joke
Paige I'm lovin these home update videos!
yay!!
Don't decide until you have your chairs, they might influence your final choice of stain/varnish
if you intend to use the mattress for longer on the floor check if it's made to be used on a hard surface.
Or go dark with an assortment of black eclectic chairs to break it up 😊
Love the natural makeup!
