The one "downfall" if you could even call it that, of the 705 is its lack of ruggedness. I have the windcamp cage on mine. I fit it into an ammo box currently, then put that into a 15L Goruck, with a couple of accessory bags for all the other stuff. I just ordered this maxpedition bottle carrier now. I can put the radio (hoping it fits with the cage on), the mic, a small battery, the wires, pretty much everything I need, into this (I use a wire antenna-we have trees), and can throw it into the pack as needed. And, the pack goes with me everywhere regardless-so its simply adding this into it.
it will all fit just fine and just barely.
I have this same bag for my 705 and I realllllyyyyyyy like it. I love that I can keep everything inside of it as a self contained unit. I just grab it and throw it in my hiking bag and I’m good to go. It’s a bit heavy but the weight is worth it in its durability.
Thanks for the view and comment; always helpful to have others share their thoughts so the larger community can make informed decisions.
You’d have to trim it to fit, but a Nylofume backpack liner tied in a simple knot would keep the contents waterproof 👍🏼
Good idea! And it wouldn't steal much space.
Bob well thought out and excellent video ! Great emergency go bag with all the equipment you need. Unfortunately I have a Peovi cage around my IC-705 and will require a larger bag.
Thanks @hamradiobasics for taking a look. I've been tempted many times to get the Peovi cage; that too is a great way to protect the 705 and looks fantastic.
Thanks for the video!!
Always appreciate you stopping by for a look.
Great idea!
Thanks, been working on this for some time to perfect it for me; glad you find it useful.
I like this one. Just purchased. The black one is $38.87 with 2 day shipping with Prime membership. Thanks for the heads up since I also use the IC 705 and Gabil antenna. 72 de KN3A
Hope you like the setup as much as I do.
Great video. I need a bag like that for my 891!
Don't own the 891; it has a great reputation.
Hi Bob - that’s a fancy setup for a 705 go bag. I’ve got the Icom backpack for mine.
The Icom pack is super nice!
I like my MFJ-223 and it's nice to have, (but only for testing and troubleshooting antenas) rather than using it to tune antennas every time. I think any available QRP auto-tuner is a more user-firendly option in my go bag if I'm not fussed on minimal dB losses by using one.
Sounds rational. Can you tell me what QRP tuner you are using?
@@HOAHamRadio Elecraft T1, AH-705 and 4SQRP 4-S Tuner/Coupler.
The AH-705 has a better circuit that uses latching relays and consumes less power than the MAT-705. Elecrat's T1 is a brilliantly simple tuner and is time proven which isn't limited to specific rigs. The 4SQRP 4-S tuner is analogue and a nice passive manual tuner with a built in dummy load. It doesn't need batteries, but instead uses RF power for the tuning LED which does reduce your output. It has less tuning range, but if your antenna is roughly cut right it will tune it. They are all small and light.
Of course, nothing beats a properly cut antenna without the added attenuation of an inline tuner.
If I'm set up for longer periods at a camp site on the same band I'll tune with the MFJ-223 or Comet and omit the tuner, but if it's temporary comms on the move for a short halt, then the auto tuner is quicker.
Remember to check that some autotuners on the market draw a lot of current because of their switching design and may be rig specific (MAT-705). Hence they will not operate for very long between recharges on internal batteries, or may require constant power from external batteries. So those ones are manageable for short bouts of comms.
Although I do have a IC-705, that was the specific reasoning for the AH-705 features.
@@adzbasslines268 Thanks for the detail; just picked up the T1 and looking forward to adding it to my kit.
I use the 5.11 Rush Moab 8 sling pack.
At 16 H, 8 W and 7 deep it's the perfect size w/o cramming.
5.11 makes GREAT bags; can't go wrong with them.
That’s the exact setup I use 👍
You inspired me.
@@HOAHamRadio lol
Got my maxpedition due to oh8stn and the wrap cloth due to you.
Great gear should be protected with great accessories; good choices.
All looks great! What is that table I have seen you using in the backyard and where can I get one? HD? Amazon?
LOL. That table is awesome but will set you back just a few bucks. It is a work bench that collapses flat and hangs on my garage wall; it sets up in 30 seconds. I have a "work" one that I've beat the crap out of for 12 years.... I pull the "pretty" one out for videos. Strong and durable. Here's a link: amzn.to/3Sg5N4R
Looks to be 53% off on Amazon right now. Might be worth a community post.
Thanks for the heads up; public post created. That's a pretty good deal.
The best Go Bag for a KX2 is about four or five times smaller. I know several hams with IC-705s and they have exceeded or getting close to building a rig larger than most base stations in the shack. Kind of silly carrying something like that to a SOTA activation or just out for a hike.
Smaller....you've got my interest. Seems like I have a new target.
One bag left. I want to need it, but no 705 and no other use case for now. Oh, I have been very happy with Maxpedition bags.
Its still on sale this morning, never expected it to last that long -- but then we never do know what's going to happen on Amazon. Maxpedition = great quality!
What’s the antenna 52a? Not the signal stick.
Its a stub with BNC. Both the stub and signal stick have BNC so I can change them out on any of my HT's quickly.
Ape said come back and say nice job!
LOL, he'll get me back some day.
Good stuff, well thought out. I'm currently using a military backpack, but working on freeing up a camera bag to provide a little more padding/protection for the IC-705. I also have a Buddistick deluxe antenna kit that i use in the field.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.
Very nice! Thanks for sharing. Jim, KC2AOF
Thanks for stopping by for a look @jimsime1
I am updating my 52A with the new TH-75A :)
That TH-75A....want one!
@@HOAHamRadio i'm on the waiting list still... will let you know if is any good
maybe just send it to you for review too?
@@sk8crk Its been a long wait...I remember seeing it at Hamcation almost a year ago. I'd be happy to take it off your hands for a bid to review it 🙂
I don't have an ic705..
Well, there's an easy fix for that! Thanks for watching.
I have the same bag, but disagree about the 705.... this bag is way better for the FX-4CR, 7350T, battery, tuner and still plenty of room.
My 705 kit is for a planned deployment and includes the kitchen sink, while my FX-4 is for spontaneous use.
Using this bag with the FX-4CR would certainly free up a lot of space for other gear. You know how much I love my FX-4CR.
@@HOAHamRadio I use a range bag for the 705, i carry with it a surface tablet, ah-705 tuner, 7350t, powerful lightsaverMax, Emcomm3 and a couple K6ARK EFHW/DiPoles Bioenno... etc, etc., ... way too much for the Maxpedition Bottle Bag...
For the FX4 I carry in bottle bag with all the same stuff as you _Elecraft T1 tuner and a 20aH battery bank (celphone type), and for digital modes i use my phone, can go for about 2 days with this system
@@sk8crk Two excellent Go Bags; nice!
@@HOAHamRadioI thought you had your fx4cr for sale?
@@forgetyourlife Believe it or not, someone essentially bought it and gave it right back to me....blew me away.
This bag is half off, $23.00 on Amazon
