Ounces matter! Millgrams too :) I've backpacked several thousand miles over my lifetime....I fully understand the weight to return ratio. Can't wait until you give the stamp of approval to the Gabil 7350. Personally I'm happy with just one base+whip that is resonant at 20m (and/or an End Fedz that is resonant at 20m) to avoid having to puzzle out/carry a tuner. Same could be said for 40m. I feel either can get you help or allow you to access the bigger picture in a collapse situation. In fact I'd sacrifice quite a bit of HF kit to gain the ability to also have a 2m/70cm handheld along too. UHF/VHF for the local and semi-regional and HF of course to see how fast the zombie hoard is moving across a couple of states away from me. I think you like the Icom ID52A (maybe I'm remembering wrong); for me it is the humble FT 3D (nothing D-star related anywhere near me).

Hey Bob, great review. After buying one of these, I found a few things mine does that yours apparently didn't. Writing to the radio injects new, and random, errors every time. Channels will be in new zones, settings will change, CTCSS might be different...data gets corrupted somewhere in the transfer if you touch the cable, make noise, are sitting in a running vehicle. Best part is random location data transmitting, even when it's disabled. Spamming everyone with your location and callsign is a neat way of getting your name out there. I guess it's like FT8 in that regard. Pros: Radio does neat stuff I've never seen before, and helps you make pen-pals on the internet. Also spams people in DMR mode, which I haven't seen other bands offer yet. Cons: Little expensive for a Baofeng with a random-number generator built-in to the VFO

I have the 10 meter Mastwerks rotatable tower and thought I could get over 50 feet in a portable vertical with this whip... It would be fun to try it out. 73

OK, I'm fully on board with your excellent videos/tutorials...and enjoy the occasional emotional heart felt rambles! But in this video I didn't see the actual application of the CHA BLANK ADAPTER (I'm new to HF/studying for my general/learning CW like a mad man and have ordered from Yu his magical FX4CR just this morning). I do think for CW-SOTA that the GRA-HF750T and just packing 2 coils and 1 whip (I'd take a 20m and 40m coil for CW farming or emergency). In that use case see if I'm correct in thinking I'd need the FX4CR, battery (you know I like Bioenno), morse key, Gabil MK3 tripod and a bit of coax and some radials. I'd dial the power down to 5w for QRP but also pack the mic too for SSB if needed :)

I have to admit that when you posted the first video in this series and I read the title, I thought you were going to restore it yourself. Now that would have been interesting to watch. :)

It would be interesting to know what the actual operating voltage those replaced electrolytic capacitors is. I am not an expert but I think I read that using an unnecessarily high voltage rated capacitor was sub optimal because it may require a higher voltage to achieve the stated capacitor value. It may also be true that the expected ESR of the capacitor might be factored into the circuit design and using a higher voltage rated capacitor may cause the new ESR value to be different. A quick google search suggests a voltage rating of 20-30% above the actual voltage the capacitor is being subjected to is optimal. I am not suggesting that what was done here is wrong, I just thought I would post this because it surprised me to learn that this is one time when more isn't always better. 🙂

Good product but for ft8 or ft4 do not use more than 5 watt !! otherwise the PA dead.... or else the device must be modified for maximum cooling

Hey I just want to say that this is a great vid. I also live in an HOA compound and as an SWLer, I do want to acquire some form of outside antenna at some point. I like your philosophy of "compromise". It is like saying 'Hey, this is how it is but I'm going to do the best that I can AND I'm going to keep trying.' To me, that is motivation in itself and that is great. TYFP and keep up the great work!

If Chameleon would make a wired (50') version with a combination 180 +/- rotator & tuner as long as it has the switch to change the lower bands to higher bands, they would sell more product.

If Chameleon would make a 50' corded auto tuner with a 180° +/- rotator they would sell them like hot cakes.

I'm sorry I usually watch your videos, but this one is in auto dubbing mode, so there is a robot voice in very bad french instead of your voice. It's sadly unusable for me.

If you have a slightly more space in your home, it is easy to make 2 element delta loop. you can adjust, if you are tuning to someone who is strong and turn the antenna reversed to adjust the short stub for a minimum signal level, you will get 5 -6 db over dipole forward gain and 25 db front to back. Equal to 3 element yogi or a 2 element QUAD.. I am very happy with my delta lop on 17 meter band.

Looking at the FX4CR specs it says it draws up to 4 amps. While the dc port on the shargeek is rated for 3 amps. Are you running the radio at full power without issue? Its a very compelling setup

I may be stating the obvious but I thought a MAJOR plus to this radio with Radiomail is that Radiomail will change the frequency of the radio to the one needed from your favorites that you're wanting to connect to, and leave you back on whatever frequency your radio was on before sending.

Just as @temporarilyoffline said, I have it's cousin the UV-PRO and have it working wonderfully using Radiomail for Winlink functionality -- just my iPhone and an HT!

Unfortunately the RF from the gutter antenna reeks havoc on my washing machine and trips breakers. Makes the XYL very unhappy.

I have the 750T, I’ve thought about getting the smaller kit and making a spike for it, looking to seeing your review of this. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of reviews on them and I wasn’t sure if it would be a better option than the 750T with the gabil tripod

Thanks for the movie im very clumsy so id rather brake a cheap whip which i got 2 for under £20 then the ss17 which are about £85 with postage the m10 thread is not a problem for me with the mounts and set up i use .
