I wish they would make a computer version of SFB that was accurate to the game, and not an attempt to appeal to twitchy gamers. As in turn based, not real time. Whatta concept!

I'm not an expert on the lore, but after some quick googling and a look at Memory Alpha it looks like an impulse engine is basically a type of fusion rocket. Which means it would shoot a bunch of plasma out the back.

I enjoyed this game when I was younger, but since they had such a limited design lineage to work from, I always thought that they should have been more creative with ship designs. But then, I had the same problem with the four federation designs that we saw in TOS.

It would take a long time to explain, but the designer of SFB is an engineer. The ships of the SFU are designed based on his vision of efficiency in ship construction, which is considered in great detail compared to other games. This results in what you are all today calling "kit bashing" but SFB players used to call "cookie cutter designs" before the "kit bashing" term had migrated from modelers too gamers. So most ships of the SFU are what modern gamers will call "kit bashed", but if you know the game lore there is a vast amount of information explaining why this is. It really is very realistic from a ship construction perspective, and very much how real world navy ships are built.

@@SGUDistantHope Some of the most recent products of the SFU are the "Master Starship Books" (MSSB). There is one for each race, so a Federation MSSB, a Klingon MSSB, etc. Stuart will understand it as the final revision of the R section, ship descriptions. But it is also a more evolved version of the R section. The new MSSB books are what you guys should be looking at if you want information about the ships.

@@SGUDistantHope I thought I'd also mention that you don't have to buy the paper books, you can get them as PDF files through Warehouse23. You can find that on www.starfleetgames.com. It will still cost you, but they are available as an easily obtained downloadable PDF file. So far there are MSSBs for Federation, Klingon, Kzinti, and Lyran. Gorn is coming very soon.
Actually, because you make videos that advertise the SFU, I bet Jean Sexton at ADB would give you guys free PDF versions of the MSSB books if you asked her for them...

@@robinvan1983 ROC, a more powerful version of this ship, also carries 6 "Fast Patrol Ships" on external mech links. "Fast Patrol Ships" are like "PT Boats in space", Defiant is only slightly larger than a PF. So ROC is basically a slightly better version of this ship with a squadron of 6 Defiant-like ships riding on its back. ROC is one of the more powerful ships in all of SFB, it's not near the top of the list but its on the list.

Sigh. Stop trying to tie SFB ships to the D'deridex, K'tinga, and other movie/TNG-era designs. It doesn't work and it makes no sense. The SFU (Star Fleet Universe - the SFB version of the Star Trek universe) is an alternate timeline that splits off of Star Trek after the animated series, and BEFORE Star Trek - The Motion Picture.

  • @christophernuzzi2780

Actually, no Romulan ship can use the ship separation rules in SFB - not even ships like the KR, which are the Klingon designs that surprise Scotty in "The Enterprise Incident" - and certainly not any of the fully Romulan-built ships like the Condor. The separation systems have been removed, not just disabled. See rule G12.13 in the SFB rulebook. Note that the impulse engines on the forward "head" section of the ship were added by the artist and are NOT present on the SSD (Ship Systems Diagram) from the actual game.

  • @christophernuzzi2780

The Condor is arguably the most powerful non-carrier in the game (although there is the Condor-H, the heavy DN version, which adds two extra ph-1). Thank you for this - please cover more SFB ships!

Played Star Fleet Battles in High School back in 1983/84 and had a lot of fun.
We had a Regular Federation Player, Kzinti Player, Lyran Player, Tholian Player and I played Romulan.
I remember a Large Fleet Battle we had between Romulan and Kzinti which was crazy with all the Plasma R Torpedoes and Kzinti Missiles. As I remember it the Battle came down to My Condor and about 4 Light Cruisers and about the same on the Kzinti side using all the tricks we could think of to stay in the fight.
I'm into 40K now but would love to get a hold of a good Star Fleet Battle Computer Game.

No real thrust involved in impulse drive? 🤔 Isn't that fusion reaction propulsors with thrust passing through a warp coil or grid? So there is thrust. It's even propelled further by the warp effect. Question is: does the warp effect makes it harmless to objects in conventional space like the ship itself?

    • @xheralt

Its horrible, it's a combination of different designs which together i don't think work. From underneath it looks like the boom and aft section of the old hospital ships of the federation. Merged with a traditional romulan ship, with the head like the klingon battle cruiser. The head is too heavy looking compared to rest of the ship, and i take issue with it being the start of the lineage of the D'deridex i don't see that at all. It's great to see something different but, still it's horrible.
