  • Martre Coles was a talented young artist living just outside Richmond, VA. He was looking for an escape, and he got one when he received an email from a university asking him to come down. He was never heard from again, and that email was determined to be fake.

I heard another version of this and what struck me was that for several years, Martre had so many issues with his father just not understanding who he was or caring at all about his son's grief and basically leaving him to deal with it on his own. From the time she moved in, Denise helped to comfort him and even to smooth things out between the father and son when dad got irritated or whatever because his son was different than what he thought he should be. Then she just turns around and kills him. And at a point in his life when he was very likely going to move out and move on anyway-

Something was wrong with the mother and daughters. What little girl stabs her stepbrother? The mother must have raised the girls to be criminal, like herself. Maybe the younger one realized that she no longer wanted to emulate her mother, but the older girl was still trapped by the mom's influence

@@flash_flood_area idk about the eldest, she was old enough to make her own choices- but an 8 year old isn't a criminal and if someone has a kid so wild they are stabbing people that's not a sign of raising a criminal it's a sign of child abuse. Someone taught her at some point you kill people who take love from you- that was the stepmoms eventual motive for Christs sake.
The poor kid was probably raised in a shit environment and was acting as desperate as she felt.

The icing on the cake: there is no discretionary parole in Virginia for felonies. The inmates must serve the majority of their sentence with only a small amount allowed for good behavior. They're not getting out anytime soon.

The police didn’t even believe Elena when she first bravely told them what she had seen. They wrote it off as a kid’s nonsense until Matre’s body was found. That gets me so mad. It should have been followed up regardless, especially when at that point he had been reported missing for 2 weeks. Such a smart girl and brave girl to plan that false alarm to help get her stepbrother’s cruel killers behind bars.
Poor Martre. As if losing his mum wasn’t bad enough, he got left with a dad who didn’t care and a stepmother and stepsister prepared to not only lie to him about something he so wanted but then to murder him. He looked like such a sweet boy with so much to offer the world. I don’t believe in heaven but if there is something like it, I hope he’s reunited with his lovely mum again, while his killers can rot in jail and then in hell.

Don't forget Elena tried to kill him before when she stabbed him with a pair of scissors. Maybe not so innocent.

@@turtleislandlac1490 to be fair I never claimed she was, however we don’t know the full circumstances around that. Not saying in any way is it excusable or okay but she was also a 9 year old child having to learn to live with a new dad and brother. I mean we only have to look at her mother to think possibly she didn’t have the best upbringing and acted out as a result.
However she absolutely did the right thing in the end, when she was a little older. She could just have easily pretended she didn’t see it, or not even cared, but clearly she felt enough empathy to set up a false burglary to entice the police to the house so she could tell them.
Again, not saying what she tried to do to her stepbrother was okay, but we don’t know the full story or how she felt about it years later. What we do know is that she did the right thing and spoke up when it mattered, which is very brave for a 12-year-old kid.

@@florriebellerose I encourage you to listen to Mr. Ballen's video on this case, called "The Death Mask" which has more details. She didn't just stab him, she tried to kill him. One day, when both parents were at work, she snuck up behind him with kitchen scissors while he was in the living room and aimed for his chest, but Martre was able to block her hand so that it just went through his shoulder. Martre was understandably upset and told his girlfriend about it that night. Also the girl would apparently break things in the house and blame Martre about it. All these things were according to Mr. Ballen's research although there are articles about it.

Well of course the police want to make sure she is telling the truth, she wasn't particularly a child who was known for telling the truth, had some major violent tendencies and was mad at her parents, anyone with half a brain cell would challenge her on her assertions, to not do so would have been irresponsible. People, including children lie all the time. The girl did what she was supposed to do, tell. RIP Martre, you almost made it out and you deserved much better.

@@turtleislandlac1490 yes that’s the podcast I first heard this story which is why I knew that the cops didn’t take Elena seriously when she told them.
The breaking stuff - she’s a 9 year old kid, so whatever on that one.
Again, obviously what she did in regards to Martre was awful, but does that take away from her doing the right thing in the end? Would you prefer she didn’t say anything? Obviously it was messed up, but so was her mother. But we still don’t know if she ever apologised, ever felt bad for what she did, if she was really aware of the finality of her actions in that moment, if she was being parented well enough to understand how wrong that was, etc.
One thing doesn’t negate the other - what she did was bad, regardless of circumstances. But she did do the right thing in the end. And honestly my original comment was more in disgust of the cops for not believing her.

not really. Elena is just as messed up as her mother. Her calling it in was more about saving her ass than helping uncover who did it. She hated him. She planned on killing him. She did stab him. She initially thought the same way as her mom. She didnt want anyone to have her mom just like her mom didnt want anyone to have her husband. And i understand she was a kid but kids can be just as calculating as adults. Just people give them a pass because theyre under 13 and "dont know what theyre doing".
