+Mitchell Thomas Thanks very much - I haddn't seen many as good before either, which is why I went for it! It really wasn't as expensive as you might think though! :) Cheers, Sam :)
Wow, I never knew that this old fashioned locomotive was in a beautiful bright blue color. I absolutely love the color blue it has for this 1880s locomotive. :)
Hi Sam, I have this model. The body has the Number R 553 however the pickup plate has the number R 354. It appears that Hornby used the same chassis for the Lord of the Isles. I intend removing the magnet and here’s why; I previously owned one but I could never get it to run through the points (code100) and i sold it through frustration. A couple of weeks later OOBill did a video on it and pointed out that by removing the magnet and replacing it with lead will solve the problem. It worked for him
Just bought the train set with this engine and 3 matching coaches 2610. Mint condition from a large toy collection that is going up for sale here in Australia. Cost me $400 Australian, don’t know if the price was ok but I save heaps on the postage. Usually have to pay the earth from the UK to Oz which is a bit off putting. Now all I need is some 2rail track as I’m a three rail man myself. But just had to have it after watching your review. So it’s all your fault.
My purchase just arrived, Mint condition!! Still wrapped in tissue, never been out of the box. Comes with certificate 2343 out of 3000 with matching coaches 3 off. Don’t really want to take it out of the box as the previous owner had the largest toy collection in Oz and lots of his collection are mint in box
Yeah absolutely it should - it's just such a gorgeous looking design - I wonder what people thought when it was built in the 1800s - it must have been completely unlike anything they'd ever seen before! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Nice pristine example Sam.....nice find. As you know I have a mint one too....she came from a seller in Canada. Remember that ebay seller we spoke about who always asks silly prices? Well, he had one on ebay once with still the original cling-film wrap still on it....brand new for.......are you ready for this.....£1,350.00!!! What a joke! Also, remember I gave you some Rivarossi spring clips. If you fit these to the front of any of the 'single wheelers' it tends to push the back-end down harder which helps the rear wheel to 'spin' as it sticks because of the traction magnet & with that not working on nickel track! It also helps on the points too as the rear wheel has better connection to the track....especially as the pick-up is only on the two wheels. Another helpful trick is to remove the traction magnet and put a heavy weight in the cab. Hope this all helps? Best regards mate, John.
+chambs123 Good god! You could probably afford to re-build the real thing with that sort of money lol ;) I may well give that a go with the front bogey, the maroon version I have is absolutely fine too, which is strange! Thanks for watching anyway, Cheers, Sam :)
Two excellent & attractive little Triang locos, Sam. I happen to own a blue one too & luckily it's also remained in as good a condition as your new one here. I run mine with a collection I've made of Hornby's little four wheel carriages like the one that comes in their Caledonian Pug set. I've varnished the coaches to match the sheen on their locomotive & although the Caledonian blue liveries are a little different in tone, they all seem to blend in well with the Triang single-wheeler engine.
+Why Not? Thanks a lot - I've got a few older ones to show, but I'll mix them in with modern ones - I'm trying to keep everyone happy :) Cheers, Sam :)
Hornby does use their instructions for advertising because they figure that if you like what you purchased, you might like some of their other products and the stars are for lend-lease type models (being used by the US, Czarist Russia and the USSR as well) and for hauling Gold Star trains (cadaver trains and ambulance trains) which is why the US and UK refer to those families who lost a loved one in wars Gold Star Families (because Gold Star Trains were used to haul cadaver trains more often than ambulance trains).
Super old loco, very nice condition, yes those inner plastic trays are a peril with paint and small parts. 1971 sounds right as per the data sheet, Tri-ang Hornby were putting nickel plated tyres on at this time. It's nice to hang on to some older versions, you can see how your collection changes over time. Regards, Cliff.
+janiceandcliff Thanks Cliff - I don't think any of my plastic trays have ever actually damaged a loco - but I still hate putting locos in or out of them, it can't be good! And definitely, I'd never get rid of the 'nasty' one because I put so much time into it - I just couldn't resist this pristine one! Cheers mate, Sam :)
Hi there I don't own one of these but I serviced one for a friend and while I tested it I used an old triang controller while it wasn't as good quality as a newer one it did allow for some slightly slower running speeds.
Hi, thanks a lot for the comment! Yeah maybe these won't be as smooth as modern ones... but yeah, I find that some run SUPER fast, and others are more sensible - looks like you got a sensible one! ;D All the best, Sam :)
Love your video. Not seen one of these hornby singles in action. Been deliberation as to whether to buy one and now I think I will. I have a large collection that is only rarely run, but my locos and stock are often displayed working at a layout in my local pub.
Thanks a lot mate! Yeah not many people run them strangely - but yes they're well worth it - plenty still out there in mint condition! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Viewed lots of your videos over last few days and it's interesting to see your review on models I've had for some time and enjoyed! Keep posting. Do you do diesel as well? Chris
Having now run the loco I noticed that the rear wheels don't go round well or appear to sit on the rails well. I came back and watched your video again and noticed that both yours did the same. Would a spring in the front bogie help tilt her further back and get them to touch. Pointless have picks on them if they don't touch. Please let me know as I do love this loco.

Hi Sam. Love this beautiful engine. You were asking about the star detail on her smokebox door. I'm looking at a double page picture of 123 in Ian Allan's ABC Summer '62 combined album, showing her central star in brilliant silver. She looks fantastic! He also notes that she was restored to her Caledonian livery & returned to service for special use in 1958. Not sure where she is now though.
+Eddie Allen Hi again, I've seen a couple of pictures with that star painted silver too - the older tri-ang version actually had it painted too! The loco is now in the riverside museum in Scotland, which used to be known as the museum of transport before it moved to its new home at riverside, but the loco hasn't been running for some years sadly, Cheers again, Sam :)
+Peter Shaw Thanks a lot Peter, it is fabulous! I just managed to get my hands on the maroon version Hornby did - but I still think the blue one beats it! :) Cheers, Sam :)
Lovely loco Sam, I am quite jealous.I have just unpacked three Triang Caledonian coaches in great condition which I bought second hand in the early 70's.One day I hope to get this loco to go with them.Al.
+AlanRochester57 Oh right, I love those Caledonian coaches - I'm keeping my eye out for a few on ebay! These locos are lovely too - they should easily handle three coaches :) Cheers, Sam :)

+Oscar Paisley Thanks again Oscar - I think that older one might have once been in a matt finish too, but I bet yours is much better! And yes, certainly erratic little engines! ;) Cheers, Sam :)
Speaking of Caledonians, are you going to get the 812 from RoS? I really want to get it but I have very little money. It'a so enjoyable the way you "nerd out" over the models' sub-details, like the box, the labels, the "add later" parts and the paperwork. You are a true modeler / collector. It's not just interesting, but fun as well. It's easy to get caught up in your enthusiasm - especially at the beginning as it lifts us through the entire "show". So much of your time, energy and most likely money have all been lovingly invested in each of your productions. Marvelous works and Thanks for sharing...
Great unboxing and review, mate. She's a really nice addition to the collection. I have a very old Flying Scotsman that has similar running qualities...very fast motors..lol :))
This is something different, I really like this review it's the best known single wheeler review out there and even nicer being triang, something about the tool box is they keep 2 sets of oil in there one is very thick wile one is quite thin iv seen this on 4566 on svr anyway great video sam

Just found this. I have a mint condition one too but it's older than yours I think because it has plastic bogie wheels and old style blackened drivers and trailing wheels. It actually looks better with these IMO. I just tried it on steel track. Remember Magnadhesion?
I suppose this is a real good choice of locomotive especially for those who model the Scottish railways? That's one thing about this Single, unlike the others, this one is a distinctly Scottish design.

+itloon haha thanks Alan, they can be really great runners its regular servicing, but obviously never very powerful! Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers, Sam :)
The kraft paper sleeve might be some of the emergency packing that Lines made Tri-ang use to save money before they went into chapter 11 and during operation under chapter 11.
Hi Desmond, yeah well spotted - it's a very common fault with these. They're not stuck, there's just insufficient weight on them! It's better this way, of course, because the driving wheels need as much of the weight as possible! This never happened when the locomotives first came out, because the track was made of steel in those days, and locos like these had 'magnadhesion' - which used magnets to improve traction. It doesn't work today of course, because Nickel-Silver track doesn't attract magnets! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
If one wanted to modify this loco, it would be good to add a model footplate. Can you imagine standing that close to oblivion with not so much as a stool to sit on?
Hi Hugh, yes this was the same chassis - it was extremely expensive to create toolings for these models, so tri-and always did part sharing! It's also great for spare part finding! All the best, Sam :)
Wonders of one man creations of stream engine back then beauty like diamond in rough, nowadays more diesels are overstated the stream train indeed I gald stream engine always been existed, minds across of people. Also, I'm glad this was emanded.
Thanks a lot! Unfortunately the Rapido Stirling is no longer available to buy - the release was engineered so that you had to pay up beforehand. I like to wait for reviews before spending so much, so I decided not to buy one! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
+Sam'sTrains Reading about them on the Great Western, they talked about always worrying that they might weld a wheel to the rail if it would spin on an incline or from a stop.
Those are massively-deep flanges. Some turnouts (points) won't accommodate those flanges in any way. I just had to see how many cars a loco as small as this can pull.
Hi Sam, nice video but I really dont like these loco's, even though I love the LMS. The locos are okay in detail but when it comes to running there not good. Hornby do make a new version but its not great. I dont have facebook so I talk to you in the comments. I know I have recommended this loco before but it would make a real change to see a good review of the LMS Crab by bachmann there are some on Ebay now so please have a look. if im getting annoying just say Lewis :)
+Lewis Shields Hi again, and thanks for your comment - I can understand why you dont like these locos - they aren't too practice, but I just like them for their spectacle! As I say, I've got a Bachmann Crab on my list, so I'll definitely review one some-time soon :) Cheers, Sam :)
Sam'sTrains no problem thanks for replying too Didn’t look up the price for Stirling Single 4-2-2 Locomotive probably should’ve done that first hehe love there videos keep up the great work

Details on the right side of the loco to the rear its the air compressor and toward the front thats a one way check valve for the injector feed line.
Wow for a old video this is quite a good one it deserves more likes

Both of them, likely unintentionally, slipped like real Singles would. Beautiful. Even models can show that kind of realism sometimes.
Hi Sam's Trains was wondering if you could do the Caledonian Railways 828 locomotive that has just been released by Bachmann.
@ 5:14 I think that might be part of the pressure regulator, I say that based on where I've seen the levers and such lead to and all.
I had one of these trains years ago probably still got it somewhere .

The kraft paper sleeve might be some of the emergency packing that Lines made Tri-ang use to save money before they went into chapter 11 and during operation under chapter 11.
+ab bush Ah cool, that's definitely possible - I've got quite a few from that era with that same packaging! :)
Cheers,
Sam :)
This does definitely not seem many years old, it just feels brand new!
haha I know! I don't think it'd ever been out of the box before I got it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It has an impressive amount of cab detail for it's age.
+Why Not? I know it - if you wanted to paint it properly, it could match modern standards!
+Sam'sTrains My Bachmann B1 has that much cab detail.
haha yeah, good point! :D
Nice loco . would like to add this to my collection someday .
+LMS500 I can recommend it - they're very unique, and there's only a very small selection of single wheeler models available too!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Looks like they’re giving express runs!
Absolutely! :D
Lovely locos mate!👍🚂🚃🚃🚃🚅🚄🚉😁👍
THanks again Gin! :D
I’ve seen one on eBay and I’m considering getting it. Out of 1-10 how good is it?
Hmmm, depends if it's the Hornby or Tri-ang one and how much they're asking... I'd probably give it 5/10?
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
If you still have this model you should run it in your next running session
It would be good if Hornby added the Caledonian Single to their railroad range
Can you review a class 14 diesel Shunter I like the design it's a lovely engine
Ooh that'd be nice! I'm doing an 04 soon actually- I don't have a 14 though sadly :(
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
That's a very nice loco you have there mr. Sam!
Thanks a lot mate! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
i think the thing behind the tender is a tool box for the locomotive
Yeah I think it is too - very cool actually! :3
Cheers,
Sam :)
I bought one EBay it had broken step . I made a step and it doesn’t like points….
You should review the super detail Caledonian single wheeler in LMS black by hornby
That'd be cool - though interestingly, it's exactly the same model as this! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
It looks beautiful! Looks like Emily, doesn’t it?
I was thinking about that too
Thanks a lot mate - yes it does have the same wheel configuration as Emily! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I don't agree with you it's emrald night
I love single wheelers, they look weird but beautiful and rare
Me too - they really are!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The two small back wheels appear to be stuck and are not rotating when the loco moves forward.
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Hi Sam boy do I remember magnadhesion. Your videos are very interesting and enjoyable.
I think I saw that at my local model railway shop, going loco. I recommend the shop.
Ooh awesome - is going loco the name of the shop?? I'll look it up, thanks for the tip!
Cheers,
Sam :)
That's the name. It's a good shop. It's where I get all my stuff from
Great video Sam lovely locos
Thank you Simon! :D
If one wanted to modify this loco, it would be good to add a model footplate. Can you imagine standing that close to oblivion with not so much as a stool to sit on?
Wonder if this was made on the same basic T/Hornby chassis as the GWR Lord Of The Isles?
Hi Hugh, yes this was the same chassis - it was extremely expensive to create toolings for these models, so tri-and always did part sharing! It's also great for spare part finding!
All the best,
Sam :)
nice loco again Sam..cool
+James chick Thanks mate, glad you liked it! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Wonders of one man creations of stream engine back then beauty like diamond in rough, nowadays more diesels are overstated the stream train indeed I gald stream engine always been existed, minds across of people. Also, I'm glad this was emanded.
haha absolutely - very well said! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You Should unbox the railway children set by Hornby
Yeah that would be nice! Maybe one day?
Cheers,
Sam :)
This is an interesting steam engine! Can you do the Stirling single next please? Thanks
Thanks a lot! Unfortunately the Rapido Stirling is no longer available to buy - the release was engineered so that you had to pay up beforehand. I like to wait for reviews before spending so much, so I decided not to buy one!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I was always curious about a single wheeler model.
+Rob McCrain Yeah - they are very un-usual aren't they? They're not very practical, but they're quite a spectacle!
Cheers,
Sam :)
+Sam'sTrains Reading about them on the Great Western, they talked about always worrying that they might weld a wheel to the rail if it would spin on an incline or from a stop.
+Rob McCrain Wow really? They've got to have had traction issues haven't they? The models certainly do anyway ;)
What happened to the old one
Still got it - just no motor now - I took it out for spares!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Those are massively-deep flanges. Some turnouts (points) won't accommodate those flanges in any way. I just had to see how many cars a loco as small as this can pull.
I do wish someone would offer a brand new tool of this loco :(
Tri-ang produced 2 Caledonian coaches to go with the engine
Yeah they did! I have them now! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You got the only surviving one in the transport museum ( riverside)
Yeah that's true! Though there was only ever one built - so it's even more special really!
All the best,
Sam :)
I bought a good one at a toy fair unfortunately the tender is a lighter blue than the loco
OOh nice!! That's not too big of an issue - I bet it's still lovely to see?? :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I Am Going To Draw Sir John The Caledonian Single By Seth Dorian Reid (Me)
Ooh I love that name for the single! xD
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, nice video but I really dont like these loco's, even though I love the LMS. The locos are okay in detail but when it comes to running there not good. Hornby do make a new version but its not great. I dont have facebook so I talk to you in the comments. I know I have recommended this loco before but it would make a real change to see a good review of the LMS Crab by bachmann there are some on Ebay now so please have a look. if im getting annoying just say
Lewis :)
+Lewis Shields Hi again, and thanks for your comment - I can understand why you dont like these locos - they aren't too practice, but I just like them for their spectacle!
As I say, I've got a Bachmann Crab on my list, so I'll definitely review one some-time soon :)
Cheers,
Sam :)
Thanks Sam the single wheelers look nice but you know there not that good at running, sorry for pestering you about the Crab.
thanks Lewis :)
How is that huge wheel driven? Where are the pistons? :S
They would be inside, between the frames!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains So the drive rods from the pistons would be inside too? its a beautiful train but i cant quite wrap my head around how it works. xD
Awesome dude!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The driving wheels seem to have a lot of wheel slip
Cheers,
Jaws
Yeah they certainly do - it's definitely not idea, just having two driving wheels - but she manages, just about!
Cheers,
Sam :)
5:15 it’s called a ‘brakepump’
All duly noted - thanks for that mate! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
You could paint the pipes on the engine
Yeah that's right - you could if you were brave enough! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Can you still buy these
Nope, sadly Hornby haven't made these for quite a while - still some around second hand though!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
can you Show us all your Single wheelers
Okay!! There's only three different ones that I have though, and one's Emily ;D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Be great if they re-made this loco today
It really would! I'd buy one! :D
I love Her
Thanks! Yeah they are fab! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Cheers
Can you do the hornby warship thruster :)
+ACE FLYING SCOTSMAN Ace fs I might be able to one day, but I don't have that loco at the moment!
Cheers,
Sam :)
I have all 3 single locomotives
That's fantastic Pedro! :D
Please review be Stirling Single 4-2-2
I'd love to, if they weren't so expensive :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains no problem thanks for replying too
Didn’t look up the price for Stirling Single 4-2-2 Locomotive probably should’ve done that first hehe love there videos keep up the great work
