A day in the life of a Biomedical Engineer (working in the medical field)

- I've been getting a lot of questions about what I actually do so I decided to film a day in my life during a full workday. I hope this sheds a better light on what my job is :)

In a lot of companies, this role falls under “clinical engineering”. Not all biomedical engineers do this kind of work but it’s the closest you can get to working in a hospital. Most BMEs usually work in an office (technical drawings, quality assurance, testing, etc.).

Hey so I’m a Biochemistry Major going into my Senior year of college. In addition to my education I’ve got a career in welding which I think can help with the “technical” or “engineering” side of these things. Can I get a job like yours with a bachelors degree upon graduation? And if so, where would you advise I look for jobs like this?

there are no where near enough "BME jobs" for the number of BME degree holders graduating. my BME degree is worthless in securing an actual engineering job like that, I don't know anyone in my graduating class that has a true BME job. this degree is sort of worthless in that respect.

@@user-bv1qt6cd4g Hello! In my experience, I would say that it is equal parts math and physics. I don’t really like physics either but I was willing to push through because I like bme so much. Good luck and let me know if I can answer any more of your questions!

Awesome vid! I studied BME and now I also work as a clinical rep, but for a neurosurgical navigation company. I can definitely empathize with the long days in the OR.

Hi I'm a medical technologist who plans to take BME as an international student,, and I happen to come across in your videos, and you gave me inspiration to pursue the degree! I have always love my profession as an MLT, and want to further my studies abroad. the engineering part of BME is a bit daunting for me, but I hope I'll push through! what do you do in a surgery? you do the surgical procedures, dealing directly with the patient?
I'm currently doing my bachelors in Mech Eng but planning to do my masters in BME and I'm just binging these videos because this field just seems so much more interesting to me, always wanted to work in healthcare/medical field as an engineer so this is such nice insight to what people can possibly do!

@@ateeqmohiuddin1648 hi, i’m actually doing my masters now and I had to take an anatomy class and a medical device design one too and it helped with the ‘biology’ aspect that you’re concerned about. It wasn’t really a barrier to be honest! It depends on what field you want to work in, in terms of BME. If you want to work in R&D, manufacturing or the hospital.

How did you become A BME? Did you get an undergrad. masters or PHD in order to work in the medicate field? Did you have to do a certain concentration? Currently in a BME program and this is very similar to what I would like to do.

I'm really fascinated and interested in BME . i hope I can pull it off in college next year! I get a little nervous thinking about it because of "math. Any advice? I am really passionate about it and working in the health care field fascinates me
Thats really cool! U dont have to get scared of the math because its a common course and its mostly calculus, differential equations, linear algebra etc. a lot of physics though! ❤️

I studied biomedical engineering and obtained my undergrad and graduate degree in it. However I have been having a hard time searching for jobs, would you able to make a video on how you advanced along this career path?
It was actually difficult for me to get a job after graduation, even with my degree and grades. I finally landed here after meeting my future manager in a career fair. I think career fairs and job fairs are the best place to find a good position for your career. I found online applications to be rather useless compared to in person networking. However, even with that it took months to get through the intense interviewing process and to place me in my current position. So don't give up! Make those in person connections and keep trying :)

Hello! I had a question. I am currently doing industrial engineering, with a minor in neuroscience. I plan to do a masters in biomedical engineering once i have finished my bachelors. By the look of how your day goes, it seems like you work pretty much like a doctor. I wanted to ask that what is exactly your job in the hospital as a biomedical engineer. You arent technically a "doctor" per say right?. I am a bit confused with what career path i want to choose thats why i just wanted to kind of ask you about these queries i had. No she’s not a doctor. She an engineer working in the healthcare field helping patients with medical devices and such. She still works a good amount of hrs in the hospital but I doubt she’s on call and works 2 day shifts straight.

I work for a medical device company and not the hospital. We come into the hospital to support surgical cases and patient checks that use our devices. Good luck on your journey!

What an interesting career you have! How many days a week do you work? 5 12 hour days must be pretty tiring, it you work that many. I'd love to learn anything at all about biomedical engineering in a clinical setting. Or in another setting, for that matter. I'd also be interested in how you came to be in a pretty esoteric field. And more about the acting, too, please! I really enjoyed this one. And you have such a lovely voice to listen to. Only problem is, it's 1:30 am here and now I want Chinese food ;0)
thank you! I work Monday through Friday and I do a full weekend on call about once a month. My days are not always 12 hrs but they can be sometimes especially if we're short on staff. I don't really have set hours and that's probably the most difficult part of my job. My parents pushed me to take Engineering when I was younger and since I did like math and science and I was always fascinated by the medical field. . . I figured biomed engineering would be perfect fit lol. My acting class is my wonderful hobby that kinda offsets my day job (though secretly I'm working on making it more than a hobby because I love it!) I hope you eventually got that Chinese food!
