- Can I make a bodyboard for the surf at Westward Ho! ? Nanny had an idea. The village at one of the beaches we visit has decided to stop the sale of polystyrene foam body boards to reduce the plastic pollution of the sea. You will be able to buy wooden ones (or hire them) and Nanny had seen a video on making your own, so that was her suggestion. In theory, I should have been able to pop into the local B&Q DIY store, buy an 8ft x 4ft sheet, get it cut into six 18" sections in store with their free cutting service, and then finish them off myself. Unfortunately they didn't have any suitable sheets in stock and if I went to any of the other DIY stores, none of them offer the free cutting service and there is no way I can carry an 8x4 sheet home on my car. I could have arranged a home delivery from another store, but I really wanted the free cutting service anyway as that would have been more than half the job done for me. The end result was I used a bit of ply I had in my stock in my garage.
For those who don't know what a bodyboard is, sometimes known as a bellyboard, here is an example video • World Bellyboard champ...

Obviously marine ply would be the ideal choice if you want it to last for a long time, but about double the price.
Cheaper ply will probably last you long enough to decide if it is the right board for you.
9mm thickness should be all you need.

I like it. I have a bugger of a time trying to bend mines and looks I just have to take my time like you
Good luck, I was copying somebody else's RUclips ideas and I didn't get as much of a bend as I wanted. You probably need to soak it overnight, or at least for much longer than I did. You also need to use proper marine ply or it will probably delaminate when it gets wet. The best I can suggest is you do a RUclips search for "steam bending plywood". The main reason for trying this was memories from when I was a kid bodyboarding 50 or more years ago.
Thank you for the info, easy enough to make the board, but had no idea how I would bend it! Your video helped me a lot. Keep up the good work.
👍
Good luck, I didn't get as much curve into it as I wanted, but it will depend on what quality plywood you use. Mine was very low quality.
Fabric softener in the boiling water help make the wood bend more easily. Wooden boat builders will do that when they steam in the frames or as they are more commonly called, the ribs. A heat gun on something that small can help too. But you have to pay attention. Fun video.
I hope you got a multi 'pence' sponsorship deal with Poundland, after mentioning their store 👍
My two main sources of 'stock' are Charity Shops and Poundland 👍
Look at those Crocs! They should be able to bend anything 😅👌👍
With my added weight to help them 😆👍
Looks sharp
Just hope it will work 😆👍

It was when the spade handles came into play that I knew I couldn't help but crack up! 😂
File cabinet for a vice? Supreme improvisation.
You'd better be posting a video of it being used!!!!
Hopefully later this year we should get some use out of it. In the mean time here is an example video ruclips.net/video/hChI5TzKSrU/видео.html and here is a playlist for you ruclips.net/p/PLA5a2xPRSrB0J84yTFu8bDqGa-hZH4dTT
This video is just a teaser. I want to see it working
With a bit of luck, we should see it in a couple of months time 🤞
Nice looking board. What is it meant To be? A Surfboard ?
It is a body board, sometimes called a belly board. You lay on it, with your belly. ruclips.net/video/hChI5TzKSrU/видео.html
As a surfer, former Cornwall resident, builder and designer of surfboards (nowCalifornia resident for decades ), rc plane, glider builder and lidmotor follower and neighbor and experimentor I have to say bravo but don't do it unless you want to gut yourself. But yes it will work look up "paipo belly board".
Thanks. You might find the information I supplied in the video description interesting.
