Is Operation Ivy the best ska-punk band ever?

  • Operation Ivy, born in '87, straight outta Berkeley, California, was the heartbeat of Lookout Records, unleashing the fierce "East Bay Sound."
Their name? Inspired by those nuclear tests in '52. They dropped just one full album, "Energy," and then called it quits in '89. But man, their legacy? Still fuels Rancid today. They molded the ska wave's soul and left their mark on countless other bands.

I wish I could give this a million likes or thumbs up! Between Operation Ivy, Common Rider, and Rancid, you have what's still in HEAVY ROTATION for me to this day. Great stuff!

dude, they came up with a sound in the late 80's that every other band that plays this style has been chasing and can never get it right like they did.

At the 3:00 mark and during Sleep Long... the guy in the stripped shirt singing is Paul Curran. He was a long time editor at Maximumrockandroll. His brother, Jack Curran, was in !Fiffteen! I was fortunate to see about 12-15 of their shows and Jello was correct...it has stayed with me. Oh... I see they get a quote from Paul later.

I discovered O.I. in middle school during the early 2000s. Never had I ever related to a group like I did them.
I started a ska band that year and named it Ivy League.
I’m so thankful to these guys for giving me the first album I could call home.

Operation Ivy literally changed my life as a teen not only through Jesses lyrics which opened my perspective to the broader world and politics but also through the music and its enthusiasm and energy

I still listen to "Energy" all the way through now and then 30+ years after I first heard it as a teenager growing up in England.
It is the American equivalent of "Nevermind the Bollocks" in importance & influence.

"Green Day has performed Knowledge live 758 times" yet no acknowledgement that it is on their debut album 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours...
I remember one of my friends in 5th grade (probably around '93) wearing an Operation Ivy shirt. This was about the time I was getting into rock. I had no idea what they were. It wouldn't be for another several years that I would realize the connection they had to all of my favorite bands, since Green Day was the first band I got into. "Time Bomb" would be out another year or so after that. I was getting all of the bands that Op Ivy had influenced without knowing a damn thing about them for far too long.
