Operation Ivy was an American punk rock band from Berkeley, California, formed in May 1987. They were critical to the emergence of Lookout Records and the so-called "East Bay Sound."
The band's name was derived from the Operation Ivy series of nuclear tests in 1952. Although the band released just one full-length album (Energy) before breaking up in May 1989, Operation Ivy is well remembered as the direct antecedent of popular band Rancid and for wielding a lasting stylistic influence over numerous other bands in what became the third wave ska movement.

Did anyone notice that we never saw Spike and Mitch Hedberg in the same place? coincidence? I think not.
It’s funny that at their first show, Jessie had to coax people to get up because many of them were sitting on the floor of David’s garage. The early shows got just a little more people each time and the crowd got active pretty quickly after they started getting known in the East Bay. Now they are seen as having some sort of legendary status. But at the time, they really didn’t draw huge crowds. Even their last show was something over 300 people. It was good that the Fire Marshal didn’t drop by that night.
