Good morning! Yes, that elm . . . when splitting by hand you get to thinking you're pretty good. You hit your spots, things pop apart and then you come upon a piece of elm. Or, as my Dad used to say, "That damn Elm". It doesn't so much as split as tear and splitting it by hand is a job. The only time I've ever had it split even marginally is when it's -20 degrees. It does mill up pretty nice for what it's worth.

Nice video Chris & Gavin. Yesterday I started restocking wood for next year. Big old 48” diameter Ash tree that carpenter ants killed and tree service cut down. I’ve just been working on the. 10-20” stuff. Bark is still real tight but that stuff is dry and hardest ash I ever cut. Grabby across grain and had the saw chattering on the one piece I noodled. Split kind of stringy for ash. GNI

You can definitely hear the difference between elm and the other ones. I split more than a full cord of red oak this week with an axe 🪓 I don't miss the days of red elm with the sledge and wedges, have a great weekend everyone.
