For the alchemy, I’m still convinced it’s a Travis song. I think the “coming back around” is her speaking about how he wanted to say hi to her at her Kansas City show and she turned him down but then he spoke about it on his podcast and was mature and understanding about her not seeing people backstage so she decided to give him a chance and come back around to Kansas City.
What I saw for the alchemy lyric “he jokes that it’s heroin but this time with an E” is that Matty was addicted to drugs so he could never love her as much as he loves drugs. So then when Travis jokes he’s addicted to heroine he means he’s in awe of the woman taylor is and his “addiction” is her!
The line before says we've been on a winning streak so I think Travis is joking that what is causing him to play better is Heroine (Taylor) instead of Heroin (performance-enhancing drugs).

i am a 1975 stan, and i was there at the manila concert when matty healy did the whole "this song is about you. you know who you are, i love you." thing and when i tell you that i was just as gobsmacked that this album was about him. jaw? on the floor
my favourite analysis about the alchemy I've seen is that it's about the fans. bc the eras tour happens in football stadiums. she talks about being back after a while (she hasn't toured since rep), circling us on a map (all the stops on the tour), sign on your heart (us holding up heart hands). the stuff about the past being forgiven feels like she saying I still love us even if she was upset about fan behaviour. I do think some of it is also about Travis too but I don't think it's Matty bc by that point in the album weve gone through the smallest man who ever lived she's done with him
With Sarah j Maas posting guilty as sin. I feel like she also loves to hint and she’s writing the next ACOTAR and the fact that she said it was a special gift. But if you read the lyrics just with it being in her head and almost kiss and touch it is so Elain and Azriel coded

I took the lyric in The Alchemy "hey you what if I told you we're cool, that child's play back in school is forgiven under my rule" as a reference to the kiss, marry, kill interview that she explicitly references in So High School. I think she's referring to the kiss, marry, kill game as "childs play" (because it's a game a lot of us played back in school) and she's joking with him saying he's forgiven because he didn't choose her to marry

Tbh I don’t believe any of these songs are just about one thing/person. I think it’s partly about the men in her life-Joe, Matty, Travis, John, etc-, partly about her career, partly about her fans & partly about her haters. I don’t think you can pinpoint specifically what one song is about, with the exception of the very obvious thanK you, aIMee lmao. I think each song is an amalgamation of everything she’s been through since the start of her career. “Bygones will be bygone, eras fadin’ into gray” likely means this album-which is very gray in every sense of the word-is a synthesis of all of her past eras. She’s addressing all of her past, putting it all out there & saying “bygones will be bygones, I’m done will all that bs, that MANUSCRIPT is no longer my story, from this point forward, I’m gonna write a new story”
For example, “I keep these longings locked in lowercase inside a vault” isn’t just about whoever the main person she’s talking about in Guilty As Sin?. Let’s not forget that reputation is in lowercase & we don’t have the vault tracks for that album yet.
I definitely don’t think, “All of those nights you kept me going, swirled you into all my poems. Now we’re at the starting line, I did my time.” is simply alluding to her writing about Matty Healy in her past songs. I think that’s literally her talking to all of the men who have made her feel like she’s special, made her feel like she’s finally found the love of her life only for them to break her heart; therefore, she has to go back to “the starting line” after doing her “time” w them & go back to trying to find her person. It’s about every single man who’s managed to trap her into a relationship (aka the slammer) but not actually live up to their promises.
This album is the best she’s done lyrically bc it’s a complete story from top to bottom. I can’t accept that anything is as straightforward as “that song’s definitely about Matty”. I think she’s just using Matty as the metaphor for every one who’s fucked her over. Literally almost every single guy she’s dated apart from Travis & Taylor Lautner can be a member of the Tortured Poets Department bc most of them give off that tortured artist vibe. Tom Hiddleston literally a degree in Classics. John Meyer, Joe Jonas, & Matty are singer/songwriters. Jake is an actor. Joe is a depressed actor. Now that she’s dating a jock, someone so far removed from a tortured poet, I feel like she’s also saying “wow, ok, I think I’m done with tortured artist type” 😂
Also, I just have to add that I don’t think that she didn’t talk about Joe enough in this album. I think she dissed him in a more subtle way. “Quick, quick tell me something awful like you’re a poet trapped inside the body of a finance guy” after saying “what a valiant roar, what a bland goodbye” is basically her saying he was boring & made her feel so uninspired towards the end of their relationship. Like, he wanted to be a tortured artist so badly but he was too vanilla. She couldn’t even write a whole album about the whole breakup of their 6 year relationship bc it was so anticlimactic (How Did It End?)

Could be a reach, but I kinda thought she’s saying she thought she was better staying with Joe and being in a “safe” relationship rather than risking it all “being starry eyed” with Matty since he’s a controversial person.
