Very helpful video. Nala is very good. If you type 'man nala' and scroll down to Examples, there is a command to download from the nearest 8 servers, you just need to change US to your own country. You can also change the number 8 to say, 10. eg sudo nala fetch --auto --fetches 10 --country GB

The nala function is really useful, much faster than apt. Also 23.10 is the best version of ubuntu till now. It works perfectly in my laptop and is fully compatible, Other distros like mxlinux and Ubuntu MATE 22.04 LTS, Linux mint cinnamon were not compatible in my laptop.

Having used Ubuntu a little and Linux Mint. I think seeing sudo and all that terminal is very foreboding and scary to someone who grew up with GUI only. Lots of these things can be done via the GUI so I think it's important to either show both or only show the GUI?

    • @kskroyaltech
      @kskroyaltech  6 месяцев назад

Will keep that in mind. I guess terminal way in linux initially confuse others but once you understand its very easy than working with GUI.

I apprecaite the video but "must" is a bit over the top. These are recommendations only, none of these steps are required other than folks being recommended to keep their system up-to-date. On NALA yeah maybe but the current out of the box app store if you will is good and I don't see any performance issues.

When I try to install many of these packages, I get "unable to locate (package name)". I didn't install nala. Is that why? How do I fix this "unable to locate" error? I have Universe and Multiverse selected in the updates pane. I am running the LTS version of Ubuntu 22.04.4.

Okay, I should've waited to post this question. If anyone else has this problem, for me at least, it was simple. I still had the updates pane open, Universe, Multiverse, Main, and Restricted were selected. I still had to hit "close" on the bottom right. it then had the popup in the video, I hit reload, tried the commands again, and it worked.

Ubuntu is the worst operating system ever. Why is it super slow? Booting is slow. Running Firefox takes forever on a super computer.

Give me Debian anyday, people going on about Nala as though its some sort of unique Ubuntu feature lol

It's not a unique feature of ubuntu. Its a solution for slow APT and fixes all the discrepancies that come with it. So Nala makes APT better.

"MUST DO", that's just clickbait nonsense. A lot of your suggestions are nonsense unless someone has very specific needs.
Example... when is/was the last time you used apt to update anything? Ubuntu will tell you if there's updates and give you an easy way to install them, without ever touching the command line. If you're running a server, sure.
Same of UFW. Unless someone knows exactly what they're doing, UFW is a bad idea - on a desktop it won't increase your security at all.
Conclusion: Much of the "MUST DOOOOO!!!!" list is BS.

UFW is fine even for beginners if they install its GUI, gufw along with it, to setup firewall the easiest possible way. The problem with it is that it uses iptables, which is phasing out, instead of nftables. Firewall control is better and more precise with firewalld and firewall-config (its gui).
Also, no need for installing Ubuntu restricted extras, especially if someone paid attention when installed the OS and marked certain checkboxes. That part is nonsense indeed.
Many of the software packages told to be installed as must are actually more 'if you need or like' as people do not have the same needs (kdenlive, office suite, screen recorder, etc...). Those are far from being MUSTs. Maybes, yes.
I do agree on NALA. Far better than APT!
Also, if someone is going crazy by the middle-click setting for the touchpad, that can be disabled in GNOME Tweaks

@@roberttranceedm I do agree with all your points except UFW. Unless the user knows what a firewall is/does there is no really good reason to use one.
UFW is primarily an inbound firewall and users don't usually have any services open to make it worth it. Kubuntu seems to have UFW access directly in their Settings menu btw. Might be a KDE thing, no clue.
