- In this lengthy video, I go over some of the changes I would make with Ubuntu (with GNOME) if I were using it as my daily driver. I don't make drastic changes like swapping out the desktop environment. I just tweak some of the things that are already there.

Not just that, you can run `history` and print your command history, after that, you can run any command with !n n being the nth line in the output of history.
Yeah exactly Derek, any Linux can be used as advanced or simplistic as you want. That’s the beautiful thing about Linux....the choice is yours!

But yet many MANY Linux users hate if a Distro is being friendly to new users. They forget this term that "Linux is your choice"......If a Distro tries to make a GUI for anything, the community just rages and tells "oh it's bloat! yuck! why put more bloat!"....everything is just bloat to them. All they want is a text editor, a web browser, and terminal.
@@hellohigoodbye my whole thing is don’t scrutinize people for their choice of distro. It’s at least getting their foot in the door. A lot of people who are coming from Windows or MacOS don’t with a CLI. I say instead of scrutinizing we should praise them and motivate them to keep learning!

This is a great video DT! It perfectly demonstrates to users some ways they can become better power users and addresses the myth that distributions like Ubuntu are only for newbies.
Thanks for the video. I used your tip to remove the menu bar after binding key commands for my favorite apps / actions. I love the streamline look, and with the background you suggested it looks amazing. I also like the average person wouldn't even know what to do if they came across the computer even if it was logged in. Gives me that extra layer of obscurity.
I really like these kinds of videos like the last one "From noob to power user". I really wish this would become a more regular series since there is a lot to learn from.
dammit DT, you made me want to go back to the dracula theme after I just finished configuring my system with gruvbox
my favorite tip for when a command needs sudo but I forgot to type it the first time is:
sudo !!
the !! means the previous command
and !$ is the last argument of the last command :) very convenient shortcut
for example:
systemctl status zabbix-agent
systemctl restart !$

arrow up ctrl +a sudo is my solution but yours is one space shorter ;)

I have seen double [ESC] working in zsh shell, It automatically prepends sudo before the command.

Adding shortcut for frequently used apps is very useful, Thanks DT.
Ubuntu is really comfy for servers or no nonsense machines, usually my older ones or business type ones.
I just switched to EndeavorOS on my desktop, but my laptop is my school machine and Ubuntu just works 100% of the time. I need something that I can just start doing work on as soon as I open my laptop, Ubuntu works great for that!
One of the main reasons people like arch is because of the AUR.
Well, arch is bleeding edge. You will always get the newest applications or updates.
*seriously* comfy. Which is why one of our 8,000 Xeon cores, 98,000 cuda cores, 3TB RAM *per node* compute clusters runs Ubuntu server.

First time I've seen a bigger RUclipsr deck out their system with Dracula. I was beginning to think I was the only one. It looks so slick.
Great content DT. I personally can use just about any DE and be at home with it but I have always liked Gnome due to it's great keybindings. I prefer to use keybindings as much as I can but I don't mind overlapping windows since there is always Expose.
Interestingly, I had been using i3wm-gaps for quite extensibly but went back to a DE until trying bspwm and wow it is so much more natural to me than i3 ever was. I especially like the fact you move the content inside the window instead of moving the window causing a disruption to my layout which drove me mad in i3.

Thank you for saying it's a good distro. I recommend it to a lot of people who ask me what distro to use. I used it myself for a long time. All linux distros can work for you if you know how to use them.

I like how you started with complicated distros like sabayon in the channel and now you help the newbies. That's good, I try to do that also but it's really difficult, how do you convince people into getting into linux?

Small tip for when you need to rerun a command with root privileges, in this case you can run sudo !!
The !! Gets replaced with the last run command and saves you some time from moving to the beginning of the line.
at 11:55 when changing the org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme "Dracula", and the ....wm.preferences theme "Dracula", what is the command to revert these back to the original? Or is that in gnome-tweaks?

The dock shows which programs are open correct? So if that is gone, what is the next best way to confirm what is still open, so it can be closed if not needed to save resources? Say you opened a bunch of things throughout a session and weren't ready to reboot or log off yet, but wanted to free up some memory.
Hi, after installing starship prompt, conda does not show the active environment anymore. Anyone faced this and has a solution on how to show the active environment name again?
What's wrong with ctrl + D for close window, since you use that to close terminals? Seems to work fine. [Edit from Future Scott: OK, bad idea - when I go to bookmark in browser, it closes browser.]
Along the same lines, there is a "Launch web browser" keybinding that comes disabled. Binding to that did NASTY things to firefox next time I launched it - wouldn't paint entire window, but painted as 2 separate windows with garbage left over from last window closed. Poked around until I found where the menus were, then was somehow able to click on something that coalesced the separate windows into 1 window that actually was rendered properly. Went back and disabled "Launch web browser" and used yours, whew. I have a looooot of tabs, so maybe that impacted it.
Added the path to my data drive to the nautilus command so super + F now opens the drive I usually use rather than having to steer into it.

Great video! I'll use it for my Ubuntu installation. Also there's a gnome plugin to tile windows!
Regarding application key bindings, the Super (Windows) key plus a number corresponds with the icons you have pinned on the dock. So if Firefox is the top icon, then Super+1 will launch it. Super+2 would launch whatever is below that, and so on. So when you set up your favourite apps in the dock, it also associates those key bindings.
what hardware do you recommend for Linux machine..i do programming and i want to start Linux but also want a some a good like 12 core with some good graphic card like RTX2070 or RTX3060 and good fast SSD . Are there any recommended hardware or stay away since the drivers might be a problem...I will be totally new to Linux...being a windows user...also some Linux command line thru WSL on Windows..Any recommendation.. i really appreciate if you were too do what kinda machine would you setup ? I appreciate it :)
Great videos DT, I enjoy watching them! Here's what I think:
Most of the so called "advanced" Linux users use Ubuntu or something like Fedora because with those you don't need to spend time tinkering with the operating system. Instead you can spend the time developing drivers for embedded devices and whatnot. I think it's a misconception that advanced users somehow configure their desktops more than new users. I think it's almost the other way around. After 15 years of Linux I can't bother playing with themes and different desktop environments or window managers. Whatever is there by default and works is usually fine. However I do spend some time configuring Emacs sometimes.
Yup. I'm convinced that most people that scream at the top of their lungs that a mouse is bad and they should keyboard everything just want to feel like a "hackerman". Your life is not going to change drastically by taking 2 seconds longer to click something once in a while. The time I have seen actual keyboard only be useful in extremely high level banking and trading. Those people are machines with their excel and application shortcuts. Opening like 8 terminals with a key combination is not impressive. It is not the dividing line between being a power user or a noob.

I started off with Red Hat and switched to Ubuntu after I got tired of Fedora's upgrade cycle.
In ubuntu 20.4 lts version it says bash : bad substitution " when i save .bashrc file and reopen the terminal..any solution to this??
How do these make you a power user exactly? It would have been more power user like if you covered things like aliases, securing, or general things like using top/htop to see whats using up you resources.

Hey there i actually did all the steps is there a Problem using the 20.4 LTS version of Ubuntu because i cant find the GTK Master in the gnome-tweaks app i checked if it is in the right directory and i used the commands from the draculatheme page
Hi DT! Is there already an ubuntu spin with any tiling window managers? I wish you could consider spinning either an ubuntu bspwm, i3 or qtile, probably via ubuntu network installer. That would be awesome!
Hi Derek, thanks for the video, mate. I’d love to see you do a video on how to integrate/use Ubuntu with both Mac and Windows computers (particularly Macs). I have multiple computers in my studio, most of them are Macs, but I also have a couple of nice Ubuntu computers. Rather than customising Ubuntu, I am really interested in learning how best to use those Ubuntu machines with my Macs in a production/work context. For example, transferring files, sharing a mouse and keyboard, ensuring formats are universal, trying to find cross-platform programmes (e.g. DaVinci resolve) and understanding the difference between them, finding an Ubuntu equivalent of Apple AirDrop, etc. etc. Love your videos. Thanks, I really needed this to change that booring look my Ubuntu had😀. As a new user of linux I really appreciate how much customisation we can do but hated that we cannot do that directly with the options available. I really like Ubuntu as it is so beginner friendly but I really hate it looks😅.

is it possible to do in Ubuntu, one Software install as two Diffrent.
Like in Androin lot of apps is there to use one app like dual app, clone or Dual Space, Parallal Space.

One important thing that you could have shown is changing the tab names for the different shells one might open in the same terminal window. By default, they show the active directory in the shell. Changing the tab name requires one to change the ~/.bashrc.

why don't you as a superuser enter the command `source ~/.bashrc` instead of constantly closing and opening the terminal?

also, if you want a highly customizable terminal, try and install zsh. It's pretty neat
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Ubuntu, and it has an added advantage of being the "default Linux distribution" which is really important if you need to run some commercial Linux software which only gives you a choice between Ubuntu and Red Hat. Also many dev teams standardise on Ubuntu because it is 100% fuss free.

I have been using Linux for 15+ years and I do not understand when people say this distro is for power users and this is for new users. Can someone explain to me what Arch does that Ubuntu cannot do vice versa?
I would say barrier for entry to linux mint is very low compared to arch or Gentoo or linux from scratch. This what people mean by noob friendly vs power users..
Those distros (mint) make people get into linux faster and get things done(do work) compared to installing exact things you need so system performance is optimised.
Major problems I faced while shift to linux is audio, wifi, nvidia drivers mint takes care of those for you compared to rest where you need to do some digging.
The main thing for me is the AUR… it’s just so convenient vs the alternatives
@@jdecicco91 I am arch user currently for the same reason. But for a beginner you got to agree it is difficult to install arch and get all desirable applications. When he does not know anything.
Sup key + the number at which application appears on side bar are default key binding to open any application which is present on side bar

I just installed dracula on the shell. on every line it now says "via v2.8.5 took s". you do not get this in the video, how do I remove this stupid message??
Sorry for the newbie question but can anyone tell me what key is the Super key? I have control alt shift, the litle windows logo key, Fn (function) key since Im in a laptop, tab caps lock
At first I thought you were calling super to the shift key but then you say super shift for some shortcut, so I go confused.
Is the windows key the one you call super? The one with the windows logo?
And again sorry if it sounds like a stupid question, but Im so used to windows that I have no idea of what you talking about by super
Btw your channel is helping me a lot in the lockup for a better distro to use, since I tryed a couple of them, but in some of my cheap laptops I always have the same problem, or the audio doesn't work on one of them or the bluetooth and for example in my litle detachable HP laptop/tablet, I never manage to get the battery to work, to recharge, I need to recharge it with the computer off if I have linux on it, and then use it until the battery dies even if Im connected to the main current, it doesnt recharge...
But im still trying to make it work with linux somehow, since windows is kind of heavy for it, and Im into digging into linux
I used ubunto, mint, debian, arch, and couple more distros already, the only ones who I kind of enjoyed was 1st mint, 2debian, 3ubunto, but ubunto is kind of heavy to, so I rather have windows then ubunto since windows is easier to work with for me

I close windows with super+q, since ctrl+shift+c is used to copy lines in terminal
Terminal I choose super+t
Nautilus I just use the "launch home folder" on keyboard shortcuts instead of creating custom command
Browser and other apps I put them on favorite list and launch them with super+1-9
welp, i do use my own favorite theme but thanks for showing me how to enable that grub menu back xD
