- This video shows the my creative process in creating a product commercial at home. You don't need a fancy studio, or expensive lighting. Just using what equipment you have around can lead to some epic cinematic shots. Follow along as I show you behind the scenes on creating an epic product commercial. This is a great example of how you can create the impossible right inside your kitchen or home work space by using your monitor.
We all think that you need high end gear, kit that costs thousands. Well you don't. This video, along with the playlist I have created on how to shoot and edit product commercials proves that even on a budget, even when just shooting from kitchen or living room, you too can create an epic product commercial at home.
Stick around to the end of the video to see the finished commercial.
Showing how you can shoot product commercials with a look into behind the scenes will hopefully inspire you to get your camera out and start shooting.
If you are keen to use similar equipment to what I have shown, all my gear is listed below.

Once again...brilliant! Nice job...keeping the contrast without worrying about current cultural madness. So well done.
Man you make this look so easy. Geez.
Thank you. It's harder than it looks, but the more you do it the easier it becomes. I still get problems to overcome in every video 😉
Man, i love your work. I Meet your channel today and im impressed about your vídeos. Keep going because your work inspire a lot of peoples. Brazilian congrats.
Thanks a ton!
How do you not have way more subscribers! I appreciate you taking the time to walk us through each step
I just came across your channel and man I love it! I have learned so much from you already thanks a bunch James
That’s great 😃 Love that my channel can help out 👍
Great commercial man! Also, love your tracks Thinking out loud & I don't care!
Awesome! Thank you!
Bro you are killing it.
Your videos are amazing Ed Sheeran!
I didn't know Ed Sheeran was a cinematographer.😂 Great video!!!
Nice work!
Don't forget the glass 😉
Ahhh yes, caught me out! Still not got any more glasses in the house 😂
@@JamesKellyStudio ;) Tapered glasses can be difficult to get clean in the dishwasher.
Placing the log Infront of the wallpaper reminded me of Austin Paul's Wheat cereal commercial. It really does help sell the effect. I also like that you kept it simple and didn't complicate it. Keep up the good work!
Yeah that wheat video was very cool. He deserves more subs for what he does. TV/monitor is a great tip for getting an impossible shot or colour that you simply cant buy.
We want explanations on the phone, you are an artist
The use of wood and the background on your pc was brilliant. Loved that little detail and it came out perfect. Be careful when you do the close up of the glasses. I think it was the 7:13 mark there are a ton of bubbles on the side of the glass. That is a sign that the glass is not clean.
👍👍
you are a boss
Haha thank you
amazing as always James. you're killing it! looking forward to watching you continue to create!
He’s like the Ed Sheeran of commercial making
Thanks so much. Same here, looking forward to seeing you smash it.
Haha I get likened to him so often! I'll take it though, just wish I had his wealth 😉
@@JamesKellyStudio He's a rich rich boy.
That is some skill James, been watching you since beginning and wow you keep growing. As i said once you will be huge one day, soon very soon
Thank you for your continued support. It would be a dream to get success on here, I'll just keep grinding for now though.
Great work! End shot is a great idea!
Thank you. Came together well overall. Had a few variations filmed for the end, but this one was a bit of fun to include instead of the usual hero can reveal shot.
Love the tutorials man!! High five from California!
Quick question about managing glare on the top/rim of the cans, how do you do it? Any advice on shooting reflective cans that have the aluminum exposed like the ones in the video?
It was definitely sexy, simple and easy to digest. Good stuff man! Im going to start learning green screen to allow more flexibility in my creativity. You're rounding 1K pretty rapidly! Let's Gooooooo!!!!
Thank you. Yeah I need to get a green screen for some other future ideas. The monitor trick can only get you so far but still great in a pinch 👍
Interesting! I’m starting to do my own product videos and have been toying with the idea of using my computer screen as a backdrop like you did! Great stuff
It works a lot of the time but be warned how your camera sees the screen can be different to what your eyes see in person. Sometimes the saturation or levels need adjusting so it looks right in camera.
Dude 10k at the end of the year will be a breeze for you.
I dunno! Still such a reach too far. We shall see though. I also regret saying to you 70 uploads! Quite far behind already! 😳
@@JamesKellyStudio tell me about it. I can makes 1000's of excuses but just need to go go go again. Thanks for the motivation.
Amazing ad mate! Now i'm thirsty! Also thanks for the in depth breakdown
Cheers Pav! They're quite tasty, but you'll need about 15 to make a night of it 😂
Awesome bro. Just subscribe to your channel keep it up 👍🏻
Smashed it again. I’ve always used a water spray, glycerin sounds like a good idea. Might have to steal 🙂.
You should! Nothing wrong with water for more unpredictable running drips, but when you want droplets that stay put for hours on end, this mix will do just that! Thank you 👍
Hey James, great video! The birds are a fine idea as a filler to sell the forest feeling!
I would suggest you to take other "whip" (or is it "whosh"?) sounds when picking up the cans :) Those you used fit better to really fast movements in my opinion and maybe you could put them in different channels according to their direction (Left / Right). For the headphone users I think this would enhance the effect.
Greetings from Germany!
Great idea! I certainly need a better collection of whip sounds. And to do it in a left/right stereo would be awesome 👍
How much time do you spend storyboarding? Your stuff looks meticulous in planning and I can imagine that helps you shoot more efficiently.
I certainly try to get at least the basic shot list down as it's a right pain if I overshoot! It doesn't always go to plan but at least it's a guide. For any of my short films I will certainly get a proper storyboard down as I need to know if there are shots in different times of the finished film that can be captured at the same time. Such as when the light is right (sunset for example), or when you're at a location that makes sense to get all the footage whilst there.
You’re a talented human! Big lol at the wheatabix 😂
Thanks Josh. I honestly thought the wheatabix would have worked. I was then going to apply fake condensation to every item in the house. Oh well 😂
This is so helpful, great work!
Any chance you can either include or make an additional video on how you did the edits?
No problem, thanks for the comment. If you wanted some editing tips right away, go check out my lazy susan video from a couple of weeks back. That will at least get you started 👍
Nice one, James! Loved the ad. Apart from 07:24 everything was lovely. Keep it up :)
Thank you. At that time stamp I think it's my face. Sorry if it's hideous, I'll just do voiceovers from now on 😂 I assume you meant the time stamp at 05:24? The rotten bit of wood?
@@JamesKellyStudio you’re welcome bud. No, that’s absolutely fine. I was talking about a few blank frames when you come off the logo back to you. It might be deliberate but I would have put a face or have a sharp cut. What do you think? I know it’s picky but your work is so good and I just wanted to give a quick feedback as a fellow creator. You truly deserve a lot more followers.
Notification gang. Oh yeh!
Love your videos! Was wondering how you managed to use the desktop for the forest background without the annoying flickering effect at higher frame rates?
Thank you 🙏 For the flickering, either I got lucky or you need to make sure your shutter speed is set right. For me I was set to NTSC and shot at 24 frames per second, shutter speed 50. You could also just keep adjusting the shutter speed until the flickering stops. Nobody would really know if it wasn’t technically shot at the correct speed.
@@JamesKellyStudio Awesome, thanks for the reply 🙏🏻
Top investment there James even though its only 0.99p 😂, another top video, thanks for sharing your process.
Oh and almost at 1k ... Come on!
So close! Although I bet the last 100 take the rest of the year 😂 I thought I'd be able to go and spray anything and everything around the house just for fun. Turns out its sticky, messy, and definitely doesn't work on Weetabix!
Haha, well thanks for letting us know so we don't get too excited either@@JamesKellyStudio
It won't be that long sir, keep up the fine work!
hey, cool! what lights do you use for filming product videos?
I’m loving your channel man!!
Question, you mentioned going to the companies site and downloading their assets/logos. I went to shandy shack and don’t see anywhere there are files for download. So I’m assuming that you go them and then cut them out and turned them into png files yourself or something?? How did you get the logos from the site, I’m hoping to do this with some companies here in my area. Thank you for any help!!
Thanks for the love ❤️ I reached out to the company who were quite keen to see what I could do, so they sent me out 24 cans and emailed over a Dropbox link to their assets. Obviously this doesn’t always work out with companies ever getting back to you but usually smaller companies would be keen to see what can be done with their products. Give it a go, but getting your message in front of the right person in the company is the hardest part. Try looking on LinkedIn to see if you can get deeper with what roles each person plays and go from there 👍
Awesome my friend, great work!
Thanks Ed. Missing you buddy 😭Hope all is on the up 👍 Thank you for still watching my stuff, means a lot 👍
@@JamesKellyStudio Of Course, I know big things will go to you
@@DodgingKarmaDesign dunno about that. I’ll just keep grinding and see
@@JamesKellyStudio OH YOU'LL SEE! :)
I made a commercial on Pepsi and I only use water, no glycerine, how about checking mine
It's pretty neat man, good job 👍
@@JamesKellyStudio, I got motivated from you "Thanks"
It was cool but do less talking and give more behind the scenes videos and also enjoy yourself buddy.
