Critics are trying to be objective and to enjoy these films, you have to take off the reviewer hat and just enjoy yourself. Slapstick comedy is so tricky. Myself, I love Ace Ventura and loved The Mask when I was younger, but Dumb & Dumber was always too cringe for me.
It's absolutely a fantastic film, and one of my favorites! Every time people say they didn't like Cable Guy, or didn't see it because they heard it's bad... I hurt for them 🥲
“Ambitious fantasy.” Funny, we call it “reality TV” today and that really got going literally a year or 2 after this in America, so this movie was prophetic. I think Eternal Sunshine and The Majestic are better movies, but Truman Show is an excellent film and all 3 still hold up in 2023, perhaps better than they did upon release. The fact that Jim has never been nominated for an Academy Award is highway robbery. Robin Williams started his career as a goofy, over the top alien in Mork and Mindy and he got his first nomination in 1987. He ended up with 3 and 1 win. Jim has proven he’s in that league.
Ebert was often way off. Carrey’s role in “The Cable Guy” was not a more serious one, but a darker one. Truman was pure or in a critic’s mind, “serious”.
@@seanchukwuezi3079obody had seen a performance like Carrey’s before in Ace Ventura. Jerry Lewis’ Nutty Professor comes close, but in terms of physical comedy, even the 3 Stooges doesn’t reach Ace Ventura levels. So it was a kind of comedy they weren’t used to and older people, especially older guys, like what’s familiar. They say they want something new, different and interesting, but in reality, they just want a lot of the kind of thing they grew up with - the stuff that got them into movies. When you hit 40, “they don’t make movies the way they used to” is one of the lines that is constantly on the tip of your tongue. I’ve gotten that way already, but there are some new things I enjoy. But these guys had the old man affliction early on. If something reminded them of their childhood or had eye candy in Ebert’s case, it was most likely good in their eyes.
Yeah. His illness was starting to take its toll. He never completely recovered from brain surgery for a tumor. Roger Ebert is obviously, and touchingly, being supportive.
I definitely remember watching this episode when it aired and felt as a kid, a sigh of relief that the adults apologize for disliking my favorite actor at that time
Saw pet detective as a teen and knew right away he was hilarious. The critics are useless when it comes to media. At least they made this piece and admitted they were wrong.
Ebert went on to do the same thing with Sandler for Punch Drunk Love, 50 First Dates, and Funny People. The best film critics are the ones that are willing to change their mind overtime.
Media critics are pointless. Just say whatever you want: if you're right, people listen. If you're wrong, you just backpedal or ignore it and nearly everyone forgets within moments.
That's not even remotely close to how critics behave. Most critics don't backpedal on unpopular opinions. S&E also almost never change their minds. The only times I can remember them changing their opinions are on a very few masterpieces where their initial assessments were too extremely negative. They have reviewed thousands and thousands of films and they have "backpedaled" on less than a dozen together. Also, they're just like other human beings, and can change their minds after watching a movie multiple times. I don't know what gives you the moral high ground to criticize them doing something completely normal.
Here is the correct list of Jim Carrey movies from the best to the worst: Dumb & Dumber, Ace Ventura, Truman Show, Liar Liar, Cable Guy, Me Myself & Irene and then the rest. I respected him in Man in the Moon but he just wasn't right for it. Yes Man, Eternal Sunshine, Bruce Almighty and such were good movies but Jim was a big yawn.
whose here after watching that YT short of Jim talking about this exact episode?!
I am. I've been watching a lot of S&E episodes on RUclips over the past two years but this one didn't show up in my feed.
Duh....gotta feed the algogator....just kidding, i respect jim carey too
Me
Me, too.
Guilty as charged your honor
It's funny how every 14 year old in the world understood Ace Ventura but professional critics didn't "get it" until he was a massive star.

@@CujobobVery good response. You hit the nail on the head. I personally can’t stand Ace Ventura but The Cable Guy is my favorite Carrey film
Exactly my age when it came out. It was without a doubt the most hilarious and groundbreaking film my 14 year old brain could even conceive.
Wow, Siskel and Ebert placing Jim on the same level as a legend like Robin Williams is an absolutely glowing review. What a great watch!!
Man do I miss this show, and them.
Cable guy is absolutely hilarious . That was no flop by a long stretch
Cable guy is one of my favorite movies. No ifs, ands, or buts.
Well maybe a couple of butts.....BIG ones.

His first failure
A retroactive of his dominance in comedy in the 90’s while they promote his amazing drama the Truman show Damn what a run
I loved the ace ventura movies I wish he'd make a third

Not everyone loves chocolate, and that’s their problem.

I like to see Siskel and Ebert backpedal when they trash a film and then discover that the rest of the movie-going world loves it.
or... just hear me out here... maybe... just maybe... their opinion changed on him after he made better movies
It wasn't just them they were probably other critics didn't like ace ventura but audience ate it up

Nobody backpedaled. They thought the first Ace Ventura movie blew baboon testicles, their opinion of that movie never changed.
Yeah, this take sucks. People actually can change their mind.
Siskel looks tired on this 😢

I believe this is the first episode after Gene had received his terminal diagnosis- the severity of which he never actually shared with Roger. 😢
OH GOD PRINCESS DIANA! I tottally forgot about her! thats the perfect allegory. Princess Diana versus Truman!
I wonder what they would've thought of Ace Ventura with the Original script?
Funny how almost everyone thought Ace Ventura would bomb
What about “Once Bitten”?
Thanks, I have never seen this episode until now.

In the end, he only made 3 interesting movies, and the last one was 20 years ago.

pet detective was brilliant, siskel and ebert just didn't get it.
Carrey was just as good in drama, as evidenced in “The Truman Show” and “Eternal Sunshine.”
Unfortunately, audiences wanted to see him in comedy.
Lol, liar, liar was the worst of all his mentioned comedies. Jim Carrey deserved an Oscar for Truman Show.

Siskel probably would have liked Team America. He was better than Ebert at reviewing comedy in my opinion.
