I've experienced more live musical performances than I can hardly remember - jazz, classical, pop, country, rock, soul, r&b, avante garde, everything - when I watch these old reruns of The Johnny Carson show and hear the NBC Orchestra on the commercial return, I'm amazed! What a band! The intensity is palpable - they're only playing for a couple of minutes so it's all out. This particular commercial return was incredible - these guys are playing their heart out in one of the most infamous and coveted gigs any professional musician can ever hope to work. Another reason why this show is a benchmark for TV and entertainment in general. What a show!
Ed McMahon was one of the greatest announcers and commercial spokespersons of the 20th Century. Mr. McMahon was a gentleman who served his country during War and became a Legend. A Life well lived.
dunno if anyone gives a shit but if you're bored like me atm you can watch pretty much all the latest series on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my brother these days =)
Me too. It was a special treat to get to stay up late on Friday nights to watch and every night during the summer to watch Johnny. Still my favorite late night host. No one will ever compare to his stature.
In 1989 I was 17 in LA and made it to Burbank and happened to be outside the studio and some guy gave me a ticket to the tonight show. I had a good seat, I think Charlton Heston was the guest but my memory is hazy. I do remember Doc came out and made a joke at the start before they started taping to tell the audience Johnny took the day off to "make his alimony payments". So yeah I got Jay Leno. It was a simpler time back then. I miss it.
That must have been a great experience. I saw Jay's "Tonight Show" when it was in the old Carson Studio (1) and later when it moved to Studio 4. I walked past Jay in the hallway behind the studio. It was like an out of body experience being in the studio where Mr. Carson used to work
Thanx again, pannoni 8! Another gem! That was my 40th birthday, and my little girl was excited bc she was starting Kindergarten soon. Always great to see Johnny and the gang again. And to hear the band. Carnac, as always, was a hoot, altho I don't think anything can top 'Sis, Boom, Bah'. Julian was wonderful, sore throat and all. Kevin was good, especially as Peter Falk, but I like his Alan Arkin and Christopher Walken bits better. I don't remember the young lady, but I do recall hearing her name before. Thanx so much, everyone, for the magic, music and memories. Thanx again, pannoni, for sharing!
I was lucky enough to have been able to watch the tonight show when it was an hour and a half. We didn't know just how good Johnny was, until he was gone, and all the interrupter hosts took over. Seems so few hosts forget that it's the guests that people tune in to see. Johnny knew it was his job to make his guests the ones to shine in the spotlight.
Two of the best hours of Television during the 1980's and early 90's. Then, Dave and TS (Tom Snyder) from 1995 through 1999. But hey, that's just me. LOL.
Johnny called Sean Lennon Julian's step brother but they are both biological sons of John. So he would be his half brother but if I interviewed him I would have called Sean Julian's brother.
Holy crap, is Kevin who Richard Jeni patterned himself after? They looked like they could be brothers; same type of speech patterns and presentation. I don't think Richard did alot of impersonations, though.
I enjoyed seeing Julian Lennon, but you'll forgive me when I say I didn't find Kevin Pollak funny. Oh, well, just my opinion and of course Johnny is as loveable as always.
Thanks for posting. I was out of the US when this aired. Maybe you or someone reading this can post other TV programs that aired on this day (8-16-1989).
@@alanh.3494 those damn liberals! lol. Conservatives bitch about liberal media yet are the first people to always interject politics into any subject of discussion. Go watch FOX News, Glenn Becks channel or listen to Limbaugh and the entirely conservative dominated talk radio and feel all warm and safe with others whom you parrot their every belief.
I grew up watching my dad laugh at Carson, but David Letterman was my guy. It bummed me out to see Letterman get political, even though I agreed with him. I loved when Craig Ferguson came along, he was very personable and silly as heck. A great way to end you day!
WizardOfWhoopee Amen to that, brother. "First appearance on a talk show" says Carson. That's incredible considering her moviemaking resume at that point. And fuck Stallone - Carson should've been smarter and asked her about working with Friedkin and Leone and especially that powerhouse cast in "Once Upon A Time In America". He wasted too much time with Pollak. SO SAD!!
This is just an example of why the show was never the same after it was cut from 90 to 60 minutes. In the old days the show was more relaxed in the conversation and no one got short-shrifted. Once it became an hour, the pacing was wrecked completely and by this point it was usually SOP that the beautiful actress appearing on Tonight for the first time would be relegated to the back-end of the show.
They were having a great conversation! I get it sometimes your listening to this guest just drone on and on or they’re flyin off on some tirade- but that was a wonderful interview. Feels like she got short changed.
Kind of funny when watching some of these old shows you realize just how forgettable some people are. The only guest on this show that I knew was Kevin. Still funny and has his own podcast/RUclips thing. Never heard of Julian Lennon or his music and I was 14 when this aired....js
I always loved Kevin Pollack as a guest on any talk show; very talented guy. And yes, Carnac was great, unusually so here! One of the best Carnac bits, I think.
Yeah right...thats why Johnny hosted 4531 episodes of The Tonight Show and Larry Sanders show was canceled after 90 episodes...right...must´ve been too good for TV.
I miss Johnny so much. Started watching in my teens in the 70's
Ok boomer

Doc and members of the NBC Orchestra came up in the days of the Big Band Era. Terrific studio musicians one and all.
@@johnsjohnson448The entire show was so professionally produced.
R.I.P. Darlanne Fluegel ( 1953-2017 ) * R.I.P. Johnny Carson the whole world misses you. *

I was on the Tonight show on March 16th, 1986 & saw Jane Curtain & Jason Bateman & Jay Johnstone. What an experience.
Oh, how l miss this man.
Beth Williams...me too...Nobody could ever take his place. He is the King of Late Night..The ones they have now are horrible.
Unfortunately true, funny, clean, classy late night TV is a part of history. And to Johnny, Ed, Fred, thank you for all the memories and magic.

He was funny even when he was bombing.
Great to hear the ORIGINAL music from the band!
Johnny was hilarious. Loved this show!
Good writers
One of the Best carnac skits I've seen & I've watched a lot of Carson!!!!!!!!!
Yahoo Serious joke might be the best one they ever did.
Thanx again, pannoni 8!

I wish I had every episode from the seventies on. I would watch them in order and try to limit myself to one a night.
I do that now!
Other then on Saturday and Sunday ;)
R.I.P. Darlanne Fluegel. You left us far too soon.
Alzheimers apparently?!? Only 64 years young she was...
Johnny was the king of late night and Ed was a wonderful sidekick 👍
I would just love to go the show just to hear the band. Those guys could play
I used stay up past my bedtime with my brothers to watch Johnny Carson.
I'm telling!!!
Ah u were naughty
You are so good Julian I could listen to you everyday. I have a lot of your music and I’m a huge fan.
Eeeew!
That Deja vu joke was brilliant!
Yahoo Serious one was pretty good too
2 days before my 21st birthday and I was dating the most beautiful girl that I had ever seen. Times we're good.
RIP Darlene Fluegel your candle shines forever
Julian Lennon had such a nice manner about him. He came across as really humble
My parents let me stay up. I am so glad they did
OMG I would have missed this genius
My older brother 's 18th birthday who had recently been diagnosed with leukemia and at the university of Minnesota hospital. . Rip
9:00 carnac. 16:12 Julian Lennon. 29:30 Kevin Pollak
37:50 Darlanne Fluegel
I always notice when a guest comes over & shakes hands with Johnny, but not with Ed.
"Is somebody actually playing the piano right now?"
-"Yes."
"And what does that mean?"
-"Money."
"Ahhhh . . . "
😂😂😂
Thanks for posting!
I loved Johnny at 11:30 and Dave after. I'm glad I was around to see that.
elton john same here I’d say the best night tv host

For a handful of years it was Johnny then Dave then Later with Bob Costas. Great late night lineup.

Awesome! What a cutie Julian is! No one has ever been able to step into Johnnys shoes -.
me and my generation grew up with Carson and Leno. true professionals. the clowns on late night now, strictly amateurs
Nowadays the late-night show is all bullshit, today it's all about marketing and competition and who's more stupid in selling entertainment.
Colbert is the worst of them and then Fallon.
Mr. Carson was a singular talent. Both Dave and Jay came up through the Comedy Clubs and later guest hosted. David was a Broadcaster back in Indiana.
8 days before I was born!
This is KATC-TV 3
Write it Down!
Id like to meet who created the bumper art for the show.
Johnny called Sean Lennon Julian's step brother but they are both biological sons of John. So he would be his half brother but if I interviewed him I would have called Sean Julian's brother.
Julian sounds so much like dad John. If John had stuck around, however, this would've been his future sound for his albums... thanks to his son.
"May you be visited by a blind Eskimo proctologist!"
He was a class act
I love carnac the magnificent on Johnny Carson
Turns out Carnac was right about the Dodgers that night. They lost to the Phillies 6-2.
He was magnificent.
One week before I left for Boot Camp, wow time flies!!!
He didn't try to steer us, here's a joke...LAUGH...and move on. ++No motive, no content directed ads, JUST HUMOR. ++PURE LIFE.
11:28 Eminem should consider this an honor
The day I was born!
Too bad you missed the previous episodes! 😆
1:47 Robert Downey jr. is laughing at that lol
HEEEEERES JOHNNY!! AYO!!
He's right- they lost 2 to 6.
Ed McMahon filed for divorce from his wife about a month before this episode aired, hence the “marriage counselor” joke during the Carnac segment.
Holy crap, is Kevin who Richard Jeni patterned himself after? They looked like they could be brothers; same type of speech patterns and presentation. I don't think Richard did alot of impersonations, though.
Not the greatest episode, but any Johnny is better than anyone else
They really squeezed Darlanne's interview short. It's a shame there's hardly any videos of her out of character.
I enjoyed seeing Julian Lennon, but you'll forgive me when I say I didn't find Kevin Pollak funny. Oh, well, just my opinion and of course Johnny is as loveable as always.
Julian Lennon sucked. He didn't last.
I thought Kevin was very funny.

Anyone know who Julian Lennon's bassist is? Playing a 5-string (and very well) before they were at all common.
1:30 - Oh the perils of taping the show at 5.30pm West Coast Time
RIP Fluegel!
Carson had real class. The entire crop of today's late night hosts are so full of hate and politics.
Agreed. That's why I no longer watch late night network TV. Liberals have taken over.

Not at this time.

Wonder what's her daughters name?
I think Carnac is Johnny Carson
🤓
Hmmm…🤔
Not Julian’s best performance but it’s understandable.
Wow Darlanne was interesting and hot! Johnny should have her on some more! RIP🙏🙏
He was a bitter old man all his life, and he was physically abusive toward his wives. That's all we need to know.
I know a lot of bands that were a lot better than Julian Lennon but they weren't John Lennon's son
Julian's musical talent surpasses that of his brother's exponentially
Too damn little of the lovely Darlanne Fluegel. They should have skipped the rest.
M&M M&M M&M
Sandler and Young, and Rip Taylor ... lmao
