  • Come with me on a hunt to find Hypomyces Lactoflorum/ Russula Brevipes. Found in the forest of the puget sound, near sea level on the Hood canal.

Any chance of finding them in KY? Been dying to try some fresh (though I've heard dried are more intense?), but don't think they're available anywhere around here.

cool video! I'm eating lobster mushrooms right now, wanted to learn more. And I did! So crazy that it's actually a different mushroom that is transformed.

How would you describe the kind of forest, soil, general environment that lobster likes?

    • @aaronhilliard5327

I described it a bit during the video, but I usually find them where there is a lot of black huckleberry and sword ferns, conifer forest, predominant mossy ground cover, usually in areas of a conifer for forest where there is a slight mix of deciduous trees too. When I see wild blackberries is also an indicator of where lobsters tend to pop up. That's just my experience though. 🍄

We've been getting a lot of lobster for weeks now. The biggest one was 3lbs.

If I smashed up a lobster mushroom and sprinkled it near the russulas.... Would that help the paritization?

I've tried, I don't think it works that's way. I often see unparasitized R. Brevipies growing within feet of lobsters. Not sure how it works exactly, but it's very random.

Unfortunately no, the lobster mushroom parasitic fungus attacks the mycelium before the mushroom ever comes up, and sometimes it doesn’t effect the entire mycelium group. So by the time you see them there’s nothing you can do

What's the best time of year to start for lobsters?

Cut the mushrooms at the stem while it is still in the ground so they can grow back

I'm sorry Trevor, but that is not how it works. The mushroom is a "fruit" to the mycelium, much like an apple is the fruit of the tree. It doesn't hurt the tree to pluck the apple. No scientific evidence has ever shown mycelium to be damaged by plucking, in fact, some studies show just the opposite. The mycelium was actually stimulated by the plucking. Either way, I do sometimes cut rather than pluck, simply for the fact that it keeps excess dirt and needle diff out of my basket(bag). Happy hunting! 🍄

That's an old myth. Neither way is wrong. As long as you don't disturb the mycelium too much.
