I'm super stoked I watched this video last week! It totally helped me recognize where I would find matsutakes! While I was hunting this weekend, I was walking on a trail and started seeing tons of pines and hemlocks. I saw a little speck of white popping through and checked it out. SURE ENOUGH! Matsutake! I am a pretty new forager and was NOT 100% so I only harvested 3 to take home and help ID. I was pretty sure just after smelling them...the "spicy" scent is unlike any other mushroom. I compared with catathelasma and noted the gills stopped right at the stipe, whereas the gills on catathelasma are more decurrent. I also posted on my foraging groups (I believe you're a member of at least one of my groups) and everyone agreed. Thanks so much for these videos. I never would have looked twice for one of these mushrooms, thinking I don't have the knowledge. But just watching this helped me not only ID the mushroom itself, but also recognize an area where they may be growing. :)
Those flags...aka #5 makes great mushroom burgers tastes way better then portobello also good on the BBQ grill just add salt and pepper (charcoal preferably)
No, you definitely want to pluck these mushrooms, one of the most identifying features is the base. It does not harm mushroom mycelium to pluck them, science has proven no difference between cutting and plucking. think of an apple tree, it doesn't harm the tree to pick the fruit.. mushrooms are very much the same. They are the fruiting body of the mycelium. Thanks for the like!!
Why aren't you showing people to cut them at ground level to leave bottom boat f stem in ground to promote more money shrooms it seems like irresponsible teaching to me

This location is definitely at Green Mountain. Search for Gold creek trailhead, Olympic Peninsula and you will find it.
