"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1968 double album The Beatles (also known as "the White Album"). It was written by George Harrison, the band's lead guitarist. The song serves as a comment on the disharmony within the Beatles following their return from studying Transcendental Meditation in India in early 1968. This lack of camaraderie was reflected in the band's initial apathy towards the composition, which Harrison countered by inviting his friend and occasional collaborator, Eric Clapton, to contribute to the recording. Clapton overdubbed a lead guitar part, although he was not formally credited for his contribution.
BACKGROUND
AND INSPIRATION * / George Harrison wrote "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" after his return from India, where the Beatles had been studying Transcendental Meditation under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi during the spring of 1968. The visit had allowed Harrison to re-engage with the guitar as his primary instrument, after focusing on the Indian sitar for the previous two years, and also marked the start of a prolific period for him as a songwriter. Inspiration for the song came to him when he was visiting his parents in Warrington, Cheshire, and he began reading the I Ching, or "The Book of Changes". As Harrison put it,
the book seemed to me to be based on the Eastern concept that everything is relative to everything else, as opposed to the Western view that things are merely coincidental."Embracing this idea of relativism, he committed to writing a song based on the first words he saw upon opening a book, which happened to be "gently weeps". Harrison continued to work on the lyrics after this initial writing session.
The song reflects the disharmonious atmosphere within the Beatles following their return from India. Harrison had led the band in their highly publicised endorsement of Transcendental Meditation and viewed this spiritual pursuit as superior in importance to their career momentum. When discussing another song he wrote at this time, "Not Guilty", Harrison said it referred to "the grief I was catching" from John Lennon and Paul McCartney for leading them to Rishikesh and supposedly hindering the group's career and the launch of their Apple record label. Eric Clapton, with whom Harrison collaborated on several recordings throughout 1968 as a distraction from the Beatles, said that "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" conveyed Harrison's spiritual isolation within the group. Author Jonathan Gould writes that, although in the past each of the Beatles had become temporarily subsumed in fads and personal interests, the level of Harrison's commitment to Indian spirituality as an alternative to the band was unprecedented.
A demo that Harrison recorded at his home in Esher includes an unused verse: "I look at the trouble and hate that is raging / While my guitar gently weeps / As I'm sitting here, doing nothing but ageing …" This version also includes the line "The problems you sow are the troubles you're reaping", which he similarly discarded. An early acoustic guitar and harmonium performance of the song features a slightly different third verse: "I look from the wings at the play you are staging / While my guitar gently weeps / As I'm sitting here, doing nothing but ageing …"This version was released on the 1996 compilation Anthology 3 and was used as the basis of the 2006 Love remix, with a string arrangement by George Martin.

The greatest Beatles song ever. George Harrison is fantastic.
Back in the USSR ,I am the Walrus, tie for 1st place, Helter Skelter, 2nd, this song, 3rd Nowhere Man, 4th, my personal ranking.

its my fave too, plus its in withnail and i. double bonus.
Yeah, I have several favorite Beatles songs. It's difficult to rank them. I just have a lot of good memories with this one.
Check out the rock n roll hall of Fame prince version of this song. Compared to Prince this is amateur night at a school
George Harrison put so much emotion into his songs. When I hear "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" my hair stands on end.
George Harrison was the most underated Beatle. RIP George.
Daniel Ruppmann he’s my favorite, and was amazing in The Traveling Wilburys ❤️
And john
No. In the 1970s and 1980s he was there on the top. You are too young to know.

I agree, his songs were some of my favorites. This is Eric Clapton on lead guitar though, ironically.
George Harrison makes me weep due to his majestical connection to love with the universe wherever he found it. My favorite.
George was the Best and he's still the Best of the Beatles. I still love him and miss him.
George Harrison made A very big impression on me from a young age. I had my own Beatles records when I was 5 years old. I remember being so devastated as a child when they broke up.
As a true Beatles fan for more than 50 years now, I do think they have all written wonderful songs. George Harrison is not better or worse than the 3 others. This is valid for each member of the band.
And let’s not forget about their fifth member, George Martin, their producer, better known as the fifth Beatle.
The true magic is that they were all able to write wonderful songs and interact together to collect ideas from each other to make all these masterpieces.
"While Eric Clapton's Guitar Gently Weeps" is a very good song 🎸
People need to realize ultra talented bands are put together by fate. John , Paul ,George and Ringo 's body of work and talent will never be duplicated . Their moment and movement in history should be savored by all. Once Paul and Ringo are gone the greatest band in history will be gone forever. Appreciate them while they're still with us.

Good comment
It really is crazy that at the same point in space, the same country, in the same city, same school, in the absolute perfect time just a few decades after the war when blues and rock were starting to become a thing that one of the funniest, most likeable guys with great drumming abilities, and 3 of the best singer, songwriters of an entire generation happened to get together and do what they did. Literally all 4 of them had enough charisma, talent and ability by themselves individually to all be extremely successful solo musicians or front bands in any band but they all happened to be apart of the same band and grow into their own and hit their prime songwriter abilities together. Your right though that really is just fate…it can’t be a coincidence IMO and honestly whatever you make of almost any type of different type of music from them, unto the modern times, without the Beatles literally everything we know and love about almost all genres of music right now would be completely different…especially pop and rock and roll though. Just think of how many great bands either wouldn’t exist, or wouldn’t have hit the heights they did at the time they did shortly after beatlemania and the Beatles literally revolutionized and monopolized an entire industry making the industry see there is immense profit in this…and all the bands they inspired, all the bands that the bands they inspired or inadvertently helped make possible to be a huge thing like The Rolling Stones who themselves went on to basically inspire and popularize other styles etc.
respect!
I was a teenager when this song came out, and fell in love with it. Without all the high tech electronics they have today the Beatles made you hear a guitar screaming in pain. Yes, the Prince, Petty, Windwood tribute version is also great, but nothing can eclipse this original version!
Let's face it: all other versions are a bit sh..e. The original is SUPERB. We should start addressing that.
My Favorite One❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Three of my favorite Beatles songs were written by George Harrison. While guitar gently weeps, Something, and Jere comes the Sun.
Exactly the same for me.

For me, this is the best song written and sung by George Harrison.
For me, it's the only Beatles song I really like.

Oh, that's dog cold.
George Harrison put so much emotion into his songs like something, here comes the sun, and while my guitar gently weeps. The songs are beautiful and eery at the same time. His songs all have powerful emotions, great vocals, great guitar riffs, and guitar solos
It was Eric Clapton playibg
Solo is from clapton yet george harrison deserves so much credit for overall composition.
Don't forget his best song, Something.

One of my favorite Beatles songs, simple lyrics, WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS!!! Southernwy
My favorite Beatles track. Really embodies that rock sound of the late 60's/early 70's thanks to Clapton.
RIP George
You can hear Clapton's signature style. What a time to be alive and hear them.
The Beatles are/were the best! My dad LOVED them, I bet hes listening to them all the time up in heaven 😊😍
Kirsten Ness I’m so sorry for Dad’s loss
Sorry for loss. Your dad is truly in heaven. May he be on the Long and Winding Road forever when one day we all join him. Here comes the sun.
Sending my condolences. He’s probably having a ball with John and George
Sorry for your loss, i cant even imagine what you had to go through
Your father is probably with John and George having a jam session
Lyrics:
I look at you all, see the love there that's sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping
Still my guitar gently weeps
I don't know why nobody told you
How to unfold your love
I don't know how someone controlled you
They bought and sold you
I look at the world and I notice it's turning
While my guitar gently weeps
With every mistake, we must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps
I don't know how you were diverted
You were perverted too
I don't know how you were inverted
No one alerted you
I look at you all, see the love there that's sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at you all
Still my guitar gently weeps

Agreed❤❤🎉
George Harrison was a really great writer, author, musicist ❤️
😢one of my favorites. M
Who else came here on the anniversary of George's death? Great song. RIP George.
One of George's masterpieces. This should have been released as a single as there were no Beatles songs in the US top 40 from Dec, 1968 until May 1969.
Probably had something to do with a remark John Lennon made in March of 1966 about the Beatles being bigger than God. After that they lost a lot of fans in the United States and burning Beatles records became a new hobby.
Another Beatle stan over here lol...
@@xyPERSONsmh. people really do like being offended about silly remarks don't they? no wonder we are where we are today, in this crazy world. hahaha.

Time.traveling song for me....back to my childhood and the 60s
A broken heart wrote this song ... it taps at my painful history ... I am glad those days are gone ... I visit them now and again but I am always happy to leave and visit my new friends ..... RB
Nothing beats the classic!!
These dudes weren't only musically gifted...they could pen a lyric...just BADASS 💯
Yeah they can across so much of their catalog
For a cover band, imo as a die hard beatle fan from 1963, this is simply astonishing...the guitar work, the overall sound, the drum hi-hat at the beginning, the piano, the opening guitar break, the vibrato, the subtle little bits we know so well, and the fade out are just incredible in their accuracy..... I've seen 3 beatle cover bands live 'in my life' (!) and this tops their best efforts, from what I hear here, and I've been listening to the original for 50yrs .
Take a low bow, boys 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Agreed! At first I thought it was a remaster.

Top 4 ? What are the others ?
By far the best rendition of this George Harrison song...really!
Eric Clapton did the Guitar on this song. On George's request. Even a Beatle needs the slow hand of God sometimes.
Prince done the best one I've heard
@@ross721983 Yeah. I love lots Prince did.
But his version is just soaked in narcissism and is almost entirely devoid of soul. Sad, really - a show meant to be to honour George became a Prince wank....

I first heard this song on or about 28 Nov 1968. I was a 20-year-old combat Marine, serving in Vietnam. I had so-far been in-country for 11 months. Too often, I had occasion to reflect on my life to that point. My high school years.... tormented by my high school peers, physically and verbally abused by my mother, betrayed, before deploying. This song touches my soul, down to my DNA. I understood and felt George's message, and his meaning of this song "...based on the theory that everything has some purpose..."
I started to make some sense of where I was, what I was doing and wondering if would make it back home. Now, it has been just over 54 years. I recall in vivid detail where I was, who I was, who I was with and what was happening around me. I have a variation of HSAM (Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory). Jeannie... I remember, I relive.... and I weep! 143!!
After 40 years of listening to the Beatles, I found out that Eric Clapton played guitar on this recording.
Cool right ? It is very hauntingly good. Now we understand why they called Eric C..slow hands. I love this song than the rest of the other Beatle songs...because of the gyit5 sound....outro solo.
Eric does a great version of this live with George Harrison’s son or grandson
