It is interesting to try new things though and some method that curlies use might be beneficial but I understand the struggle. I am subscribed to some wavy and some curly girls because I am in between so it takes trying multiple things from multiple people as 2c-3a hair isn’t very common.
I also like subscribing to people with different outlooks and that tends to mean different wave/curl patterns also. While not everyone’s preference I like seeing how others deal with similar concepts and systems. So Courtney as a cgm following wavy and manes by mell who doesn’t follow cgm but is curly. Lots of tips and tricks to try and different results on the same products.
But… needs? It’s not a need for wavy girls to scrunch, scrunching is a way to make their hair look curly. If you don’t scrunch maybe your hair won’t be as curly or wavy, and then that’s your natural hair!
I love that you made 3 rounds kind of challenging your hair styles in the same video. We can clearly see the difference just changing a little bit the application techniques 😍
Long before the CGM, when I was younger with more hair, I used the rake and shake method. It gave my wavy hair incredible curly waves with loads of volume. I didn’t need a bunch of rules to have beautiful, natural hair.
Yes! All those rules and definitions make me crazy! I was scrunching my gel 35 years ago (before the curly girl madness) and I still do. I love tips and trying new things but some curly girls are straight up crazy! That’s why I only watch channels like this and do not belong to any groups.
Could have swore the title of this video was the “no scrunchie challenge” and I was like, “I’m out of here” 😂scrunchies are absolutely necessary. LOL but no scrunch challenge??? I’m down for that
Yep! That's exactly how Manes by Mell described it, like curling a ribbon! Using a denman without scrunching would be very different to not. Unfortunately I haven't mastered the denman yet though 😫 then again, I kinda feel like it's cheating lol
I'm a 2a/b wavy and can't imagine not scrunching in my products. My hair is almost waist length so styling right side up and air drying are both way too much work for me personally lol. I'm an upside down styling, scrunching, diffusing girl.
Thanks so much for compiling the different results together in one video! Its a great look with these products, in your regular scrunching routine in round 2. Beautiful as always. My son was watching over my shoulder and whispered in my ear " She's really pretty" 💕
I tried the no scrunch challenge this morning, and I have to say I really like the results. I always seemed to have wonky curls/waves, but not today! I am more wavy than curly. I also do the bowl method every third or fourth wash day. I did follow Jannelle O’Shaunessy’s process today.
My hair curl pattern and health has improved SO much since using your styling and product application technique...I'll never go back. 😁 I'd be yucky flat if I styled this way. LOL
I never use any leave in or gel, and I always air dry. I have realised,my hair gets curlier when it's longer, so growing it out again. I liked your results. Can't wait to see what you do next.
I really enjoyed this video!! And I so appreciate your scientific approach and efforts to control the variables that you have control over. And side note, you are so pretty. 😊
When I scrunch my hair goes flat. But, when I don't scrunch it does wave up similar to yours without scrunching. I appreciate you showing that there are other ways to get hair to be wavier other than just scrunching because scrunching has been really frustrating for me ☺️
I really love how you apply new methods... your comparisons are awesome! I think you just have a naturally very lazy wave in your hair. Which is absolutely beautiful!! My sister has what we call a lazy curl pattern, which waves but more frequently down the length, where as my mom and I's curl pattern is curly from root to tip. What your hair tends to naturally do without manipulation is what your actual hair is naturally. Of course, your hair is longer so the weight will tend to pull out your lazy wave. Where your layers are in front (shorter) is wavy-er tending towards a curl, but by the end of the day even that tends to go natural. I, of course, would not try to add or change a thing if I had your hair, but then I have frizzy kinky curl that I wish would lay down flat on my head and relax a while. We all know we want what we can't have. I'm grateful to God that He brought along all these ladies who encouraged curly gals to embrace them and take care of them. The manesbymel method tends to work best for me, but I honestly likely end up doing my hair the way you tried here more often. I just can't stand spending hours in my bathroom between shower/ style. Maybe what you're needing is a new shape cut to liven things up on those shiny locks... it really does look to me like the weight of your hair is now working against you to create those full bouncy waves you so enjoy. My daughter has the same issue, she loves the amount of wave she naturally has but her hair is thick and once it gets passed her shoulders the weight of it takes over. Looks like you'd be a good candidate for those soft foam sticks that you wrap locks around and they bend to get definition and body with a natural dry process. Then you wouldn't have to worry so much about being still while your hair dries. Thanks for sharing! Smiles and blessings...
Kudos to you I have to scrunch. Have you ever tried forming ringlets with a denman brush? I find that my hair is alway stringy and i get more waves instead of curls if i don’t do the ringlets. I take really small sections after i apply my leave in and style cream and form ringlets with the denman brush then glaze gel over all of my hair and scrunch then diffuse. My hair is (2c-3a)
Thanks for showing this! I know with my own fine wavy hair, if I want to do "gentle heatless straightening," I brush it a bunch of times when it's wet and drying. I think with more wavy hair, brushing and raking is a great way to straighten it. It seems like you'd need a pretty strong curl pattern to hold up to that much brushing and raking with no scrunching. I agree with you; I'm impressed you did have some wave/curl at the end after all those weighing-down factors! :)
The change in your hair... when my hair starts behaving unusually, I can chalk it up to needing to clarify. I'm assuming you've been down that route so bear with me... you seem like a technically curious and even savvy human. Is there a potential chemical x-factor here? The water you wash your hair with? Your laundry detergent? Could your hair be reacting to something elemental like a change in air quality? I'm not looking for an answer. I just tend to dive down rabbit holes. Toss me a line! LOL ;)
I have been trying this for 2 weeks now. I had the same blah moments you mentioned and I can tell a HUGE difference. My wavy/curly hair is loving this right now. Scrunching gave me so much frizz
My mom doesn’t scrunch her hair and it’s super straight at the roots. I tried to convince her to scrunch it, but I’m pretty much rejoicing that she doesn’t comb it when dry anymore
Thanks for showing us different styling techniques! It really demonstrates that each person's hair is unique and we all have to find what works for us. I think I might give this a shot, just to see what would happen. My hair does much better if I air dry. It doesn't take much diffusing for it to become frizzy. Likewise, I don't have to scrunch much to get a curl pattern. Thanks Courtney! You're the best 👍😊
Thanks Courtney, your videos are always so interesting and helpful! I’ve been thinking about your hair. I know that due to all the single styler videos you’ve been using the same shampoo and conditioner over and over. While they’re formulated for your hair, I wonder if perhaps they don’t agree with you somehow. Thinking about the people who had problems with Deva Curl and how those with the most problems were those who used them as their primary hair products. It seemed like people who switched things up and just used DC occasionally didn’t have nearly the issues. Since you’ve been using the same products so often maybe that’s causing problems for your hair. It would be interesting to see if you stopped using them for a while if you see any changes.
I still like the No scrunch result, the waves are more loose but it looks like it has slightly less frizz and more shine to me. But the more curly is also pretty too
This was interesting. I think all your results looked nice 🤗. Different hair types need different styling techniques to bring out the best in them. It's good to experiment and combine different techniques!
You got better results than I did! One of my hair stylists brushed gel into my hair, didn’t scrunch and diffused it and I ended up with wavy roots and straight hair everywhere else.
Great challenge and useful experiments, thank you. The Grateful Hairstylist I don't think scrunches or plops in her curly specialist salon. She adds products like you did in sections then she diffuses immediately to take the water weight out. I didn't think this would work for me as I'm wavy with a few 3a curls but it actually worked pretty well.
I often wear my hair not-scrunched (kinda straight) and I don't use any products, and my hair looks nice that way and voluminous, though not curly. The nice thing about our hair type is we have some flexibility to wear it either way. It still looks nice and shiny!
I think it gives you a beachy waves look. I'd never air dry. The back of my head won't dry and it starts to make my underlayer clump together so hard it has zero movement. But with diffusing it would be good.
Thank you for showing us this! It’s helpful to know we all struggle with our hair sometimes and to keep trying! I’m currently struggling with my hair’s curl pattern changing with pregnancy. Do you have any tips for this type of transition?
I have 2c/3a hair and it took me a long time to realise crunching my hair actually makes my hair wonky and frizzy and leaving it be actually makes better results
Now I have the time and Im mostly inside not seeing many people it's the perfect time to experiment with new hair routines. Its almost becoming a new hobby 😅
I think this is great! I plan on trying it to see my natural curl pattern because I always have doubts my hair is actually curly and this could be reassuring
Ooh I’m trying this next wash day. I’m a 2c wishing I were a 2a. Update: I’m never scrunching again! This gave me beautiful waves, only slightly looser. No wonky pieces. No frizz.
What if you tried using the Denman brush again, but go through in small sections and pull the brush away from your head like you are curling a ribbon. It has helped me get some curl definition and helped with my stringiness. 😆 I feel you on the sluggishness with hair recently. 🙌🏼 thank you for all you share!
i dont apply products (dont like crunchiness and stringly look from it) and brush my hair out after shower and then air dry and it works for me. my hair is a bit curlier than yours naturally i think, but i just prefer less frizz and more order in my hair that i get when i brush down my hair and let it curl up on its own, rather than using products and scrunching which just makes it too messy and hard. i think it just goes to show that different hair works differently as well as people prefer different qualities of it even among wavo-curly folks
Hi Courtney! I have been watching your channel for sooo long now! Thank you for all the tips and tricks you have taught me! I am about to start my curly journey and was wondering if you can please do a clarifying shampoo and deep condition demo? I plan on using the suave daily clarifying shampoo and the jessicurl deep conditioner for my final wash. I might even use the curls blueberry bliss leave in conditioner after. Please let me know if you have any tips!
This is how I styled my hair before CGM and any knowledge of scrunching. (80s-90s). My hair was much curlier then though. We shall see how it looks today. I’ll try it.
Thank you for doing these videos , I am trying to figure out what is good techniques for my hair , as I am new to curly hair , so thank you I really appreciate them and I do try the new techniques if one way does not work , my curls are tiny whirly curls that are all over the place with lots of frizz , so I will try this and see whats happens!!!
I am like you- ❤️ learning new techniques~ I believe you & I have similar wavy hair. I was having similar issues w/ my hair & just having blah days. I had my hair cut & she put some layers in it & bam- curl, bounce city! Super wavy/ curly & happy. “Just a thought, not a sermon.”
I have only ever scrunched my hair when styling. My introduction to styling was by scrunching in mousse and even though I use other application methods and styling and not exclusively scrunching its natural to do so now especially if I decide to add more gel after plopping. I might try not scrunching my hair one day though as especially now that my hair is shorter I will probably be refreshing almost daily anyways. So might as well try for a day or two.
I think I’m going to try this.. any tips for getting the extra moisture out of your hair? Do you just leave it dripping? I always like how scrunching also helps start it drying by getting some of that water out.
Why does my hair look like it has such awesome clumps and curl potential wet but once it's dry it seems much less defined clumps and honestly nowhere near as curly as it looks wet?
Usually means you need more moisture. Try incorporating deep conditioning with heat in your routine. Also, make sure to use lightweight products so they don’t drag the curl down. You can also use a sea salt spray. Your hair will hold moisture more with salt water and therefore be curlier. You can make it yourself too!
This was really interesting to see. 1) I would really like you to do same styling on damp hair instead of soaking wet. I feel that will not weigh down your hair. 2) I think as you have wavy hair a mouse only or a foam challenge would be interesting to do. No Leavins no gel only foam.I’ve not seen you use much of that on your channel.
My hair is a bit curlier than yours but I feel like it’s only curly because I scrunch a lot. I really want to try this but I don’t want to waste a wash day, especially when it takes me an hour to wash my hair
I gotta say I liked it trying the no scrunch challenge and upright styling. It didnt look stringy at all. I think you are having stringy hair cause of how much you rake through your hair to get it to not stick to the back of your head. All the raking breaks up your curl clumps imo. I've stopped upside down styling all together cause it drives me crazy. I avoid the issues with upside down styling and I wet apply leave in and cream cream in the shower and then wet plop in a shower cap to get dressed and do skin care then apply my styling products and I dont brush my hair at all or rake. Just scrunch and then I "reverse" plop where all the hair is plopped in curl towel at the base of my neck for 20 mins. Then take it down and apply a bit more product with wet hands. I avoid all the issues of styling upside down this way. No weird messy back part and I still have volume after I sotc.
My hair was straightest in a dry climate. Humidity makes it wavier. Depending on your location, you could have the heat running a bunch drying the air this time of year in addition to outdoor water being in solid form and not especially accessible to your hair.
I'm so glad you did this video. Although scrunching gives me more curls, I think it makes the top part stringy. So I just tried the #noscrunchchallenge for the first time the other day. I still need to try it several times with different products.
Hi Courtney, I've been having the same issue. Interested to see results. I think your hair looks prettier the usual way, sorry. I'm still going to try it, tho. Take care and be safe. Her hair is super curly compared to ours.
“I don’t think my hair is wet enough” also her having *soaking wet* hair i like to style my hair when it’s damp, when it’s soaking wet, it weighs down my hair so I don’t get much volume on my roots.
My hair has always curled at the ends, I always had a single ringlet in the back that always survived my extreme brushing. One time a friend in school asked how I did it and I was like I didn't do anything, and she said that it was cool. I never really considered that my hair could do anything more that that. My hairs really weird. I have some bigger ringlets underneath in the back, with waves mixed in, front/top layer looks nearly straight compared to the underneath of my hair with only a hint of curl or wave at the front pieces. And then of course I have some baby hairs that have a curl right from the top. Every time I do my hair I pull the front pieces back or braid them and pull them back because if I don't it looks more straight than it is and if i do, you can see the ringlets lol😭 I haven't tried any products except for sea salt spray my mom had yet due to money reasons, and I plop, scrunch, & diffuse but I'm hoping to get curlsmith's Shine line soon and see if that helps anything out. But yea. I like my hair when it just air drys although it only curls on the ends
I used to do this because it let's my actual curl pattern show! But it's frustrating that it takes so long to dry so I kind of gently shake my head back and forth to get some water out
I would like to try this. I’ve wanted to try in the past but always felt like scrunching is the only way to get the definition I want...but would be a fun experiment cause usually I just scrunch the hair all together. I feel like at least using this technique would insure I don’t miss any sections with product.
I know this video is old so not sure you’ll see this comment - any tips for keeping sections separated while styling? I always struggle with this and feel like the sections get interspersed while styling the next layer.
Can you do Manes by Mell's method? I am a 2a/b wavy and I use her method with the perfect Haircare brush (instead of denman) and take bigger vertical sections. I'd be curious to see if it works as well for your hair as it does for mine.😊
Can you do the opposite, doing scrunch/style techniques with 'no' product? by no product i would accept a leave in conditioner/protein. maybe you've already done this and i missed it.
Courtney did a product free one, a while ago: ruclips.net/video/VKTumIOQX3s/видео.html. But quite a few videos of Courtney’s start off with her saying “this is day___ product free hair” like she does at the beginning of this video.
Without scrunching, I just have straightish frizz. If that ever comes in style, I'm ready.
🤣 same lol
This is why I exclusively follow wavy girls and not curly girls. The needs of us wavies are so much different than of curlies!
It is interesting to try new things though and some method that curlies use might be beneficial but I understand the struggle. I am subscribed to some wavy and some curly girls because I am in between so it takes trying multiple things from multiple people as 2c-3a hair isn’t very common.
@@jenniferprice9971 Ah, makes sense! I am like a 2A so I am very much in the wavy camp 😂
I also like subscribing to people with different outlooks and that tends to mean different wave/curl patterns also. While not everyone’s preference I like seeing how others deal with similar concepts and systems. So Courtney as a cgm following wavy and manes by mell who doesn’t follow cgm but is curly. But… needs? It’s not a need for wavy girls to scrunch, scrunching is a way to make their hair look curly. If you don’t scrunch maybe your hair won’t be as curly or wavy, and then that’s your natural hair!
I feel like waves need a bit more help to form than curls.
youre right, they do! waves can very easily be straightened out. waves seem alot harder to deal with then curls haha.
I love that you made 3 rounds kind of challenging your hair styles in the same video. We can clearly see the difference just changing a little bit the application techniques 😍
You have the coloring to go red and you would ROCK the ginger look!!!
Yes! I could’ve sworn that she had a ginger tint in parts of her video. Crazy!
Her hair looked red in the bathroom scenes.
Long before the CGM, when I was younger with more hair, I used the rake and shake method. It gave my wavy hair incredible curly waves with loads of volume. I didn’t need a bunch of rules to have beautiful, natural hair.

I like it without the scrunching. Looks healthy and natural.
Could have swore the title of this video was the “no scrunchie challenge” and I was like, “I’m out of here” 😂scrunchies are absolutely necessary. LOL but no scrunch challenge??? I’m down for that
Loove my satin scrunchies!
That was what I thought the title was😂
Me too😆
I was thinking...there’s no way I can not have some sort of messy bun for two weeks
Mel and Amanda aren't just sisters, they're actually seesters! 🤣 great video courtney, and good technique for dealing with curl envy too
Gotta love the seesters! 🙌🏻
The denman's grippiness has a ribbon-curling effect on the hairs imo.
Yep! That's exactly how Manes by Mell described it, like curling a ribbon!
Using a denman without scrunching would be very different to not. Unfortunately I haven't mastered the denman yet though 😫 then again, I kinda feel like it's cheating lol
🤯
Kind of a nice, beachy look. Might try this when I'm feeling lazy.
This is what mine looks like when I don’t use product except it’s more frizzy 😂
I like the no scrunch technique for a more beachy look on myself.
I'm a 2a/b wavy and can't imagine not scrunching in my products. My hair is almost waist length so styling right side up and air drying are both way too much work for me personally lol.
I'm an upside down styling, scrunching, diffusing girl.

I love the no scrunch challenge. I’ve done this before too and my hair still waved. We do have wave/curl to our hair!
Check out Luisa Luis! I think she does a rake and shake. She has fine wavy to curly hair.
love her
I really enjoyed this video!! And I so appreciate your scientific approach and efforts to control the variables that you have control over. And side note, you are so pretty. 😊

no way could I stop scrunching lol
I wonder if you just swing your hair more when it’s wet it will release from the big clumps more and allow them to be free and wave more?
Thank you for showing us this! It’s helpful to know we all struggle with our hair sometimes and to keep trying! I’m currently struggling with my hair’s curl pattern changing with pregnancy. Do you have any tips for this type of transition?
The result looks exactly the same as how I have been wearing my hair my entire life haha now I have learnt to scrunch and now I have curls!

This is a great idea! I'm going to try this on my channel! I don't know how I will contain myself from not scrunching though...it's like automatic.
Ooh I’m trying this next wash day. I’m a 2c wishing I were a 2a.
Update: I’m never scrunching again! This gave me beautiful waves, only slightly looser. No wonky pieces. No frizz.
my wavy hair has been going straight recently too! I feel a bit stuck, frustrating!
Same here!! I blame covid 😂😂 jokes xx
@@curldreams877 😄
Thank you for doing this ❤️ feeling that way too but you inspire me to keep on going ☺️
You always look beautiful! I have learned so much from you. Your videos inspire me.
I love your exp-hair-iments!
i dont apply products (dont like crunchiness and stringly look from it) and brush my hair out after shower and then air dry and it works for me. my hair is a bit curlier than yours naturally i think, but i just prefer less frizz and more order in my hair that i get when i brush down my hair and let it curl up on its own, rather than using products and scrunching which just makes it too messy and hard. i think it just goes to show that different hair works differently as well as people prefer different qualities of it even among wavo-curly folks
I actually love this for you 🤗💖
Hi Courtney!
I think diffusing would make a huge difference! Still looks great :)
I’m thinking about trying this, my hair would probably turn out like yours. It’s a really loose wave. Plus, I can’t air dry. I hate wet hair.
Mine too
Me too. Been experimenting and my hair seems to like a hard hold gel vs medium or soft hold. I get more definition that way and it stays wavy longer.
I do the same thing because (in my case) the product distributes better when brushed in. Only I brush it upside down to help with volume
This was really interesting to see. 1) I would really like you to do same styling on damp hair instead of soaking wet. I feel that will not weigh down your hair.
2)
I think as you have wavy hair a mouse only or a foam challenge would be interesting to do.
That my soigne protein leave in keeps showing up lately it’s tempting me!
Have you tried plopping it soaking wet until it dries completely. Tip. Make a loose plop not tight so it doesn't stick to your head
Great video. Nie I need number 4: application of the product as in number 1 but scrunching the hair afterwards.
My hair was straightest in a dry climate. Humidity makes it wavier. Depending on your location, you could have the heat running a bunch drying the air this time of year in addition to outdoor water being in solid form and not especially accessible to your hair.
I just saw a great video by Sarah Ingles and she was talking about how moisture (water) brings out natural texture
I may try this because I don’t have a diffuser & scrunching seems to kill the definition in my hair
I like the editing on this video!
I'm glad you like it
I'm so glad you did this video. Although scrunching gives me more curls, I think it makes the top part stringy. So I just tried the #noscrunchchallenge for the first time the other day. I still need to try it several times with different products.
please please PLEASE TRY THE OVERTONE COLORING CONDITIONER!!!!!
Hi Courtney, I've been having the same issue. Interested to see results. I think your hair looks prettier the usual way, sorry. I'm still going to try it, tho. Take care and be safe. Her hair is super curly compared to ours.
This will be interesting 👍🏻
I want to try that protein leave in
“I don’t think my hair is wet enough”
also her having *soaking wet* hair
i like to style my hair when it’s damp, when it’s soaking wet, it weighs down my hair so I don’t get much volume on my roots.
So with round 2, did you only scrunch when you scrunched in the product at the end? Or did you do your usual lots of scrunching?
I've tried a few techniques too and I HATED how my hair came out without scrunching.
Have you tried the bowl method? I just tried it and it was really fun and a good change in pace!
My hair does the same without scrunching. Btw, I hope you will try the Ecoslay Jello Shot, I am so curious about it
I know this video is old so not sure you’ll see this comment - any tips for keeping sections separated while styling? I always struggle with this and feel like the sections get interspersed while styling the next layer.
Can you do Manes by Mell's method? I am a 2a/b wavy and I use her method with the perfect Haircare brush (instead of denman) and take bigger vertical sections. I'd be curious to see if it works as well for your hair as it does for mine.😊

Can you do the opposite, doing scrunch/style techniques with 'no' product? by no product i would accept a leave in conditioner/protein. maybe you've already done this and i missed it.
i’d also be interested in this!
Jameyjo did this but obvs has very different hair
Courtney did a product free one, a while ago: ruclips.net/video/VKTumIOQX3s/видео.html. But quite a few videos of Courtney’s start off with her saying “this is day___ product free hair” like she does at the beginning of this video.
Sara Kempler thanks!
your weight down look is my trying look xD
