Hey there guys! One thing I did neglect to mention in the video is that I do not personally think that DIY deep conditioners are worth it. I have tried a few and have found that they just don't do anything for my hair. And they are super messy. I actually save time and MONEY (avocados, honey, etc are expensive y'all!) by just purchasing a really high quality, perfectly formulated, pre made deep conditioner. The ingredients in a good deep conditioner are specifically chosen by formulators because they are the most effective at actually penetrating deep into the hair and nourishing it from the inside out.
DIY ones like that don't work for me either, but I have found that adding oils to a regular conditioner actually work really well. You just have to have a lot of water in it and keep it on there for at least 15 minutes
I agree Courtney. I've tried countless DIY deep conditioners and they're messy and not worth the effort. I made a deep conditioning treatment with cinnamon and that was tough to rinse out. I still had cinnamon residue for awhile after. Another time I did a protein deep conditioner using Greek yogurt and it hardened and was awful to try washing out. I love your content.
@@christinaobert5664 I use olive oil, or avocado oil. I kinda thought about it, and I think the oils just kinda help seal, and then rinse out, but not completely so it just feels more smooth and moisturized or what not. So if you're oily/don't like oils in your hair, it's probably not for you, but the oils work really well for me personally. Also, if you don't mind oils, but don't like a lot, I'd suggest avocado oil over olive, because that seems to leave me a lil less "oily". I know I'm making it seems greesy, but it's not, it's just like smooth. Idk what words to use, but I think that's the best I can explain it:):)
Being in the bun stretched out her natural waves and gave her bigger, looser, bouncy waves. I used to do that to my hair until I discovered scrunching and stuff. Honestly if you want to be super low maintenance as a wavy, you can just put your hair into a bun every night to sleep since wavy hair usually holds curl easily anyway.
can I just say that you telling me my hair is not "bad" straight hair, but actually curly hair, spoke to my soul? lol. decades of straightening and flattening and frustration. Now I've discovered curly hair at age 53, and it's amazing. I'm still learning how to do it, but I will get there. Thank you for doing these videos.
Courtney - I love your curls. But I’ve got to tell you that I’m a little bit in love with your product free hair as well. I think it looks so healthy and nice. What a difference sense to years ago!
Yaaaas! Best time of the week and I so needed this info! I’ve been trying to figure out why my hair needs and what is overkill!! I would looove a “the mane choice” review! Their prickly pear leave in is amazing!
Oh my goodness thank you! The shirts are coming super super soon! Also, I really felt like it needed protein in this video. I do talk about how I tell what my hair needs in my Protein Moisture balance videos.
Super belated but I hope maybe still helpful :) Inahsi’s Mango Hemp restorative mask also has protein, as does Mielle’s baobab and mint deep conditioner. I prefer the Inahsi one; for context, I have 2b/2c medium density, medium thickness, combo of low and high porosity hair.
So I am 42 years old and for my entire life have had stick straight hair that wouldn't hold a curl even after a perm. Apparently, now that I turned 40, my dad's hair genes have kicked in out of nowhere and my hair is now growing out of my scalp curly. My ends may still be stick straight but my new hair is curly and you are really helping me learn how to even deal with it. I have no clue because I've had again straight hair my entire life. Mother nature can be pull some interesting things....
I use stephen knoll hair products. However using the curly girl method makes my hair feel and look better. Thank you for your curly girl tips. It's been a life changer.
You are such a wealth of knowledge. I just started CGM, and it's all so new to me, so I really appreciate all your videos. Finding my products is a huge challenge, but at least I'm starting to understand what my hair is trying to tell me a bit more, thanks to you. You rock.
Will you do a one brand wash day with blueberry bliss? I bought the leave-in you recommended from them and it smells so good so I was wondering if it was worth it or not to get their other products
Okay, after almost 2 years of being on this wavy curly journey, I finally purchased a heated cap & deep condished with it for 30 minutes and I believe it made a difference.
Thank you for sharing this! I like to that it's further into your journey and still noticed a difference. Unfortunately, there are so many factors that can still cause damage.
I am a year into my CG journey and I feel like I’m starting from scratch each time the seasons change! When that happens I love a really good clarifying and deep conditioning wash day to restart my journey and figure out what the heck my hair wants! Like today, when it’s snowy and freezing (I live in Maine). 😆🤷🏻♀️ I love your videos, Courtney! Keep up the great work!
So, I don’t see this on your channel but I’m very new to it and the curly girl method in general. What’s the best way to sleep with wavy, fine hair? My waves go great all day but I end up looking like a forest witch in the morning
I'm a 2a with some 2b wavy over here, and I've tried so many ways (pineapple, silk case, bonnet, etc.) And I also move around A TON when I sleep so my hair is all over the place and curls have disappeared. So far what's worked for me is wrapping with a silk scarf. I can do it as tight or as loose as I need for it to stay without hurting and my curls stay in place wayyy better than a bonnet since it's more snug on my head and has less movement. CurlMeSweet has a good video on how to wrap your hair. 💕
Ummm, your day 3 bun hair unfurling in all its glory is amazingly beautiful! Many people spend hours on their hair and still wish they had that effortless beauty!
I wish my hair looked like that after air drying! Instead, it’s a big frizzy mess... trying to recover from years of Brazilian blowouts and heat styling.
Hey Courtney! Amazing tips! I just started CGM and I’m lost sometimes. So, how often should I clarify and deep condition? My ends are pretty dry, but I had a wash day yesterday and my hair is very trained to not get greasy that easily. So that would mean that I could go a week without washing, although doing CGM is exciting so I’m not sure I could hold on for so long without washing now haha! But yeah, is it only recommended to clarify before deep conditioning? When to do it? Help!
thx my deep in conditioner says I can use it in the shower but also after the shower as a leave in. I'll pass on that and just use my regular leave in conditioner. Using the time after deep conditioning to evaluate your hair was also very helpful info.
How often is it okay to try new products- like shampoos and conditioners and stylers? I am changing it up quite often but I dont know if it's okay or if changing it too much causes frizz?
I've used a disposable shower cap with a wet tshirt heated in microwave and put in a plop. Disposable is thin enough. However my hair is pretty short so it heats quickly and then heat stays held in. Might not work for longer thicker hair.
@@sunflowerbaby1853 i just get it fairly damp like wet but can't wring water from it. Then i bunch it up on a plate for 30 seconds rebunch it and 30 seconds - you want it hot but not burning hot since it will touch your forehead and neck in the plop. Creates just enough heat to get the moisture really permeating the hair 😄
@@heidirosin5577 Thanks Heidi. I'm definitely going to try this. Do you put a shower cap on & then wrap in the t-shirt or put it directly over your hair? And approximately for how long? I really appreciate you sharing this info w/ me & others. So nice. 😊🌻
@@sunflowerbaby1853 I use a disposable shower cap because it's thin and then wrap like you would use a shirt to plop. The thiness of the disposables lets the heat in better than a thicker reusable shower cap. Hope this helps😀
Good grief your hair is perfect! The color is incredible and it’s so shiny! I totally want to feel it. Your videos are definitely motivating me to try to get my hair looking half as good as yours. My hair is down to my bum, do I have to cut a lot off? Also I have a weird fizzy spot on the back of my head. What gives? Pregnancy totally changed my texture. Thanks for the great videos. Hi! This is entirely unrelated to this video, but I had a question about PH. I believe it was in your Simply Curls Co video from a year-ish ago that you mentioned that the PH of your conditioner affects whether you can use it as a leave-in or not. What PH range should you be aiming for? If the conditioner says "PH balanced", does that fall into that range? Thank you so much! Your videos have helped me so much with my curly hair journey.
This is an AMAZING question, and to e honest I have NO idea what companies mean when they say pH balanced. The pH of human hair is 4.5-5pH. Typically companies make their conditioners around pH of 3 to help smooth down and close the hair cuticle. I think you would have to literally email/contact the company and ask what they mean by pH balanced. Because that seems like a weird phrase to me for sure!
Swavy Curly Courtney Awesome, thank you! I found it a little confusing too 😂 If you want to use the conditioner as a leave in, should you be aiming for 4.5-5pH then?
I recently started the cgm and wonder if you could post a video for a looser or perhaps product free hair. I love your hair in this video! How did you do that style? I'd like to have a different look that is not heat dried. Thank you!!!
I'm gonna do this tomorrow. Bad diy cut and new gel I'm not sold on yet 😅 I don't think the teatree Giovanni is actually a clarifying shampoo but it's what I got 🤷🏻♀️
I've tried sitting with the deep conditioner for 30 minutes a couple of days and wrapped my head in a towel with a shower cap underneath the towel and I don't see much improvement ☹, than when I leave the deep conditioner for 10 minutes.
What do you do if you fear losing all your hair by brushing it soaking wet with conditioner in it... so much comes out brushing after a shower, I can’t imagine brushing during it also lol 😞😅 if my hair looked like that post buns and product free, I would not bother with products ever loll gorgeous! 😍 if you do lose strands when washing or styling, it’d be nice to see how much lol I’ve never seen someone wet brush their hair so much, but works beautifully 👏🙏
I’ve been making my way through so many of your CG videos! Thank you! Can you please explain when I should try a protein treatment. I know you said to do one if your hair is in hygral fatigue, but when else should you try one? Should I wait 1-2 weeks after a protein-free deep conditioning treatment? I’ve been doing the CG method for just about 2 months and tried a protein-free deep conditioner about a week ago.
I clarified with neutrogena , deep conditioned with the Giovanni nutrafix and put in the As I Am leave in, then diffused after plopping with no stylers. My hair didn’t clump without the stylers but boy, did it bring out waves and some ringlets. I am thinking I may have 2b 2 c hair?. It does feel very soft. May try day 2 styling tomorrow?
Hi Courtney! I have been diving into your curly girl videos for the last week or so and I love them! Anyway, I have yet to start my own CGM journey but was wondering, with the final wash day to start all this out, with using my sulfate clarifying shampoo, should I use the deep conditioner that day as well or go straight into using the cowash I plan on using, as well as perhaps the gel styler/leave-in I have purchased?
I got a satin lined shower cap that I use for deep conditioning lately. I tie a t-shirt over it (tied how I tie it when I’m plopping), and then I just drape my heating pad over my head on medium-high heat. 😂 It looks ridiculous, but no one is around to judge me except my dog. 😂😂
I don’t think you actually answered the first question of how often to deep condition😄? You got real excited about dc over dirty hair 😄Is it okay to do it once a week if your hair seems to like it?
SO WHAT IF YOU HAVE HARD WATER? Should you use a regular clairifying shampoo like the Neutrogena one (I don't think they sell that one anymore ☹️) or should you use a chelating shampoo before you use a deep conditioner? Also, would I want to use those products OUTSIDE of the shower first, so I can sit with the deep conditioner in my hair? Help! I'm so confused!!! Lol. (I tend to make things much harder than they are!) I watched a "manes with Mel" video on this subject and it also confused me. You are my go to for hair advice, so I was hoping that your video would explain the confusion that her video made me feel! Also, she was talking about deep conditioners and it looked me to feel confused over masks and leave ins. I thought a mask was a deep conditioner. If a mask is NOT a deep conditioner, than what exactly is a deep conditioner because they only offer masks and leave in conditioner at the drug store. 🤷🏼🤷🏼🤷🏼🤷🏼
Hi sorry if i missed it but have you mentioned how often do you clarify and deep condition? Normally it's adviced to deep condition once every week or 2 weeks but if I'm going to clarify before, i don't think i should do it this often??
My goodness! I just looked at the Curl Junkie Repair Me deep conditioner and that's kinda pricey What are some suggestions for more economic brands that are specifically for deep conditioning? I know my hair needs this and I'm just getting started on my hair journey, and yes, rather overwhelmed with all the product info. Thanks so much!
This was so helpful! Quick question and sorry if I missed it, but when using the clarifying shampoo, are we still only supposed to rub it on our scalp and let it run down over the rest of the hair, or should we gently wash the entirety of the hair to get rid of all the product build up?
Hey there! I know this comment is coming pretty late, but what I've learned personally is that clarifying shampoo usually does a good job at cleansing the lengths just by running down the hair shaft, BUT you can gently squeeze the shampoo into your hair as it runs down the length if you feel like you need that extra bit of clarifying. 😊
Thanks for this video! I’ve been meaning to do a deep condition with some protein for a couple of weeks now because I didn’t know how important protein actually is for my fine high porosity hair I’ve just been giving it all the moisture and I’m overloaded lol 🙃 😂
I DC with a facial steamer lol..oh for 10 minutes only though, my steamer only steams in increments of 10 minutes 🙄 but it works for me so🤷♀️ I still slap a disposable shower cap for another 5-10minutes after steaming though...
How do you know when your hair is over-moisturized or has too much protein? I’m still pretty new to the cg method so sorry if this is a novice question.
If you would like to figure this out about your hair, take a loose strand of hair and pull on it....if it is over moisturized it will stretch and stretch like a elastic but with little to no spring back. If you have too much protein your strand will snap harshly when pulled on. Hair that is over moisturized can either appear limp and soggy when dry or sometimes really fluffy overly soft with very little definition. If hair is in protein overload it shows signs of being rough to the touch. It can be almost stiff and feels dry and brittle with little shine. Hope this helps I have finely gained balance in my hair. It was a challenge at first but this tool changed everything. My bad hair days have disappeared now that my hair is well balanced. So I hope this helps you on your journey. Mains by Mel has very informative info on acheiving balanced hair you might like to check out.
I need help!! My hair has been doing good for a while now but the shampoo I have stopped working. I’ve tried clarify and everything and nothing worked...... i need a new shampoo ASAP but idk what to get... can you help??

I was with my cousin who has curly hair but I left her house this morning. My mom won’t let me get a whole lot of products and I have no idea when to even wash my hair 😂😂 plz help anyone
If a deep conditioner (also doubles as leave in and wash out conditioner) causes flash drying when squish to condish, does that mean it will not hydrate hair and I should avoid using it??
Ughhhhh. Researched all day to get ready to start cgm. I don’t have an approved deep conditioner tho! Is it better to cowash or use normal shampoo & no deep conditioner? Won’t be able to get back to the store today :-/
Does anyone have a way to sleep with wavy hair overnight? Everything I try has ended with my waves straightening out, my turban slipping off or being way too tight!! Pineapples straighten my waves too :(
Hi Courtney. I'm unable to open your website page. It's giving me an error. Also, would you mind listing the 2 different types of soduim ??? sulfates you referred to?
Does anyone find their hair dries quicker after deep conditioning? I have low porosity hair that takes around 6 hours to air dry when I use a normal wash out conditioner but when I deep condition it is somehow dry in 2 hours? Not a problem at all, it's super silky and soft but just wondering why this happens lol.
I have found that some deep conditioners just don’t mix well with my hair. The Shea moisture power protein mask I can use once a week and still need moisture. But the Maui moisture masks I can’t use AT ALL because it puts me into severe moisture overload for several wash day 😂😅 hope this helps :)

Thank you for this video, how often do you deep condition? Weekly/biweekly/monthly?
Got it in a we dad gift set. I love that. I don't know why i think that's so funny🤣
I'm sure you know this. But it's Ouidad haha.
@@ac8806 It auto corrected but i thought it was funny so i didn't fix it
@@keiras13 that is honestly what I thought she said when I first started watching her videos🤣
What are your thoughts about deep conditioning in the sauna? (Yes, I live in Finland)
Great idea! ❤
I don’t think you actually answered the first question of how often to deep condition😄? You got real excited about dc over dirty hair 😄Is it okay to do it once a week if your hair seems to like it?
This was one of the main reasons I watched this video. I want to know this, too!
Yes, please tell us!!
Yes I waiting for the answer to that question!
i think she deep conditions everytime she clarifies, so maybe once a month?
How often do you recommend we deep condition?
Thanks so much!
jessie curl deep treatment is a good hydrating mask
i just use a plastic bag (one of those bags walmart puts groceries in) instead of a shower cap
Courtney, what is the purpose,& benefit of using a item that is hot after deep conditioning?
Heyy, just wanted to ask you can I add some castor oil in my hair mask when I deep condition?❤
Your hair is getting sooo long! Beautiful!!
Thank you!!
Really, really helpful! Thank you
Hi Courtney, are you still selling your t-shirts? I looked on your website and I didn't see any - I love them! Where are they? 🥰
Glad it was helpful!
Swavy Curly Courtney ☺️❤️
How often do you use protein deep conditioners and moisture deep conditioners? Or do you use a deep conditioner with both ingredients in it?
I DC with a facial steamer lol..oh for 10 minutes only though, my steamer only steams in increments of 10 minutes 🙄 but it works for me so🤷♀️ I still slap a disposable shower cap for another 5-10minutes after steaming though...
How often should I clearify and deep condition my hair?
Your hair looks really nice actually 😃
Mains by Mel has very informative info on acheiving balanced hair you might like to check out.
should you deep condition with hot or cold water?? like can hot water let the conditioner soak into hair better?
My hair is always breaking no matter how often i cut it. Any advice on that?
I need help!! My hair has been doing good for a while now but the shampoo I have stopped working. I’ve tried clarify and everything and nothing worked...... i need a new shampoo ASAP but idk what to get... can you help??
Would love to know your opinion on Carols Daughter Wash Day Delight and Olaplex No 0
Ok so I just want to saw that you have the most beautiful hair! I love it so much! I literally JUST found out my hair is naturally 2a 2b cuz I did the curl test.
Courtney, I can’t find the Repair Me conditioner. It’s not available on Amazon now😢If I go to their website, it’s $8 shipping.
Pineapples straighten my waves too :(
@Christina Obert I haven’t, I’ll have to try that!
I struggle with that too.. Please people help us !
Manes by mell has a new video on this!

I have the repair me protein deep conditioner what do you love for moisture deep conditioning?
Hi Courtney. I'm unable to open your website page. It's giving me an error. Also, would you mind listing the 2 different types of soduim ??? sulfates you referred to?
Sodium laurel sulfate (very drying) and sodium laureth sulfate
@@steffk3989 thank you!
Oh dear, can you try this link? pages.swavycurlycourtney.com/
Can you recommend a nourishing/hydrating deep conditioner? opposed to a protein one. thanks!!
in her favorites video it is jessie curl deep treatment
Very helpful! Thank you 😊
You're so welcome!
Your 3 day hair is my hair everyday.
Your hair on a bad day looks 1,000 times better than my curly hair on a good day! 😔
Wow you should wear this color all of the time 😁
What problem am I potentially causing if always wearing hair in a bun for the day when wet…, it’s still wet by end of day? 🙏
Breakage
I've only deep conditioned once and my hair was so over moisturized afterwards that I haven't done it since.
I have found that some deep conditioners just don’t mix well with my hair. The Shea moisture power protein mask I can use once a week and still need moisture. But the Maui moisture masks I can’t use AT ALL because it puts me into severe moisture overload for several wash day 😂😅 hope this helps :)
Can you start a consulting business. A one on one that we can pay for to discuss our problems. It would be a great way to address our specific weather, hair type, and products we are using. The can be done by Zoom, Skype etc.
She has! Check out her website: swavycurlycourtney.com/

Can i deep condition my hair without covering my head with a shower cap or thermal cap(cant afford) and use my hair dryer with diffuser onhigh speed high heat to give heat to my DC?
Genius!!! You could totally do that!
