    How timely! Last night while drifting off, I said to my husband, "I think my hair has hygral fatigue." He gasped and said, "Oh NO!" and fell fast asleep. I know he was just trying to care, but there is no possible way he has any idea what hygral fatigue is!😆😆😆 ANYWAY, thank you for uploading this today! More helpful than my sleepy husband!

    This was really helpful. I'm almost 2 months CGM, and my hair is drinking up all the moisture (I live in a pretty dry climate), but I also feel as though it likes a little protein in the mix too. In case you are looking for video topic ideas, I would love to hear you talk about regular rinse-out conditioners vs. deep conditioners, and whether it's more about the products/ingredients themselves or the amount of time you leave it on. I feel like that's an area I haven't heard all that much about, other than specific product recommendations, so I would love to hear the nerdy details.

    Just found your channel! This video was just what I needed. I started practicing the CGM in 2014 . I had very course, low porosity, extremely protein sensitive hair and never could use protein. Fast forward to my hair now after undergoing harsh chemo treatments a year ago and it is much finer. I believe I will now have to use some protein instead of just all moisture. This video has given me great knowledge on what to look for!

    Your hair and your headband look so cute today. My hair defies nature, as it is coarse and low porosity, but can't seem to get enough protein. I am very easily over moisturized and use protein in almost all my stylers (while still trying to maintain a balance). Protein makes my hair feel soft and smooth while adding to my curl definition, I don't know what I'd do without it!

    Watching the straight to curly video where you did you sister's hair taught me SO MUCH MORE about styling my hair properly than any other videos I've watched. I guess because you were doing the techniques as you were describing them, AND answering her questions, there was way more focus and highlighting of techniques I didn't even realize people were doing/supposed to think about. Like breaking the hair off the back of the head specifically, this changed my hair outcomes completely. I have so much more to learn. I would love to see more videos like that! maybe reactions to someone else's wash day or describing things they're doing that they aren't explaining etc

    This is a good reminder that I’m long overdue to do a home gelatin treatment. I’ve neglected the treatments during covid-19. Working from home means I haven’t felt the need to be super strict about my CG routine. I thought my hair was stretching out due to length it’s grown over this time, but it’s probably needing that protein boost.

    • @GG-xz7nv
      @GG-xz7nv 3 года назад

      Shelby H I feel your pain! It’s really tough to find protein-free stylers that actually work well how I want them to. So instead, I try to incorporate protein-free products in the other parts of my routine like shampoos & conditioners. Also a good moisturizing protein-free mask now and then for extra hydration is good too. I also like to use oils as part of my styling routine. Those really help seal in all the moisture.👌 We still need “some” protein though, so our curls don’t get too moisturized and end up with “hygral fatigue”😖🥴 So I mostly just try to keep my protein product ratio a lot lower than the protein-free products that contain moisture.
      I hope that helps🙂

My mom tried to help but my hair is so different from hers. I have thick blond 2b/2c curls. So I have 2B/2C hair and I used to use Pantene. I switched to Kristin Ess and my hair is terrible now. After going through your channel I think I’ve learned that my hair might be in protein overload. I’ve decided to start trying the curly girl method, I’m going to get the suave clarifying shampoo and find a curly girl approved, protein and glycerin free, deep conditioner and try the methods that you’ve shown. I’m not sure whether to go completely protein free or not. I think I might try using the blueberry leave in conditioner you mentioned in this video and have everything else that I use be protein free. When I used Pantene my hair was really healthy, and now it looks terrible. After learning about ingredients from you I looked through them and realized that Pantene is protein free while Kristin Ess contains a lot of protein. I have coarse low porosity hair (which you also taught me) and I’m realizing my hair might hate protein. I know that Pantene contains silicone and sulfate, but I want to point out that Kristin Ess while it is sulfate free also contains silicone. So that’s not what’s wrong. With all of this being said, I’m going to start the curly girl method and I’m not sure whether to go completely protein free or to use the blueberry leave in conditioner you mentioned in this video

    Hi Courtney, thank you so much for this - so incredibly helpful! Can I ask what the proteins are in your long-beloved Giovanni products? I’ve been searching the ingredients and can’t find any which include the terms hydrolysed, protein or amino acid... although the front of the bottles insist that there is protein in there! I’m in the UK, so formulations may be a bit different. Thanks so much 😊

    I have not gotten a haircut in almost a year thanks to covid, and thought my hair was just getting so long that it was stretching out my curls, especially since the strands are super thick and heavy. I use two protein products (curls leave-in and biosilk gelee), so I didn't think I was lacking protein until I did an hour-long protein treatment and my curls perked up so much it looked like I had gotten a hair cut! It was the Curls reparative mask, but the protein ingredient isn't in the top five, which makes me wonder if I don't really need a ton of protein, just a little boost every so often. This mask was a week ago and my curls haven't stretched yet.

    This is awesome. You know what's interesting is that for years my favorite shampoo has been the Moroccan oil hydrating shampoo. I've tried other Brands based on recommendations from hairdressers who think my hair is medium fine and straight. So things like redkens volumizing injection shampoo and many others. What I have found is that all these have no protein at all, not in the shampoo and not in the conditioner and not in the leave In conditioner, and my hair feels awful and limp... like it's gonna fly away and just weird.. But that hydrating, shampoo and conditioner combination from Moroccan. Oil does contain protein, so on a whim, i picked up a cheap drug store leave in conditioner. That's focused on hair growth and has protein in like the top three ingredients, and my hair loves it. So what's great is that I get to go back to my favorite shampoo because it really is the one that treats my hair the best. And I now know what drug store things to look for for the things I tend to not spend money on, so leave in conditioners and gels, and curl creams, and all of that stuff. I don't like to spend Moroccan oil prices for those. But I know now to look for proteins in those products because of your channel, which will save me from all sorts of bad purchases.

    I'm not sure if my hair is over-moisturised and needs protein? I assumed I needed deep conditionning because I've just started the curly girl method and everybody says to start with moisturising. My hair is chemically treated & I've done Olaplex 3 before, so I assumed I needed moisturising rather than protein, but my hair is also really fine & shows signs of needing protein (dull hair, feels wet even when dry, waves fall quickly). Can I try doing a protein treatment - what would people recommend for fine wavy hair?

    Hi Courtney! I’ve just started watching your videos. I just got a protein treatment (it says right on the directions that you shouldn’t wash it out), so I tried to use it like a leave-in. The very moment that I put it on my head, it busted up all of my clumps! I couldn’t salvage my clumps after that and my hair looked like a stringy mess. Why did it do that, and how to I rescue my clumps if they shatter into a bajillion pieces like that again? Sorry if you already answered this before in a video that I have watched yet.

However after watching your video I’m wondering if my hair needs both moisture and protein? I assumed my hair snaps if I do the strand test because it’s lacking moisture but is it maybe also because it’s lacking elasticity due to lacking protein?

    Hi! This is entirely unrelated to this video, but I had a question about PH. I believe it was in your Simply Curls Co video from a year-ish ago that you mentioned that the PH of your conditioner affects whether you can use it as a leave-in or not. What PH range should you be aiming for? If the conditioner says "PH balanced", does that fall into that range?

    Hi Courtney! I have been using the cg method for 4 months now and my hair is getting healthier💃. Thanks too you I learn something new every time! I have a question how can I reduce crown frizz? argan oil and gels or the LOC method do not yet have the desired result unfortunately☹️

    • @GG-xz7nv
      @GG-xz7nv 3 года назад

      I get lots of extra texture & frizz in my crown area. I have to add a lot more moisture to that area & try to keep protein away from it for the most part. I love argon oil or coconut oil products. I apply a good amount of hydrating / moisturizing conditioners & masks to my crown, but not every single wash day or it’ll make that area very flat and lacking volume.

I just did a deep conditioning treatment using ecoslay banana cream and immediately after i rinsed it out my hair felt really rough, gunky and so tangled! So i’m wondering if its protien overload ? Although i dnt knw if this deep conditioner is even rich in protien ?

  • @thendrix58
    @thendrix58 3 года назад +1

    I've been so confused about this subject. I find it scary! I've heard about how protein can damage your hair so I've been scared to try it. My hair is fine and soft. I've heard that hygral fatigue feels very soft (and like gum?) Mine feels like a cloud (if that makes sense). It's light and feels nice, actually! SO, on that longwinded note, I still have no idea if I should put my big girl pants on and TRY a protein treatment. I will definitely check my shampoo, etc. and see if any of the protein ingredients you mentioned are in them. I'm currently using the LUS Brand/Love Your Curls trio. Great video and thank you for trying to educate me! Hugs from Louisiana!

    • @Icyjessy1
      @Icyjessy1 3 года назад +1

      Don't worry. Protein can't really damage hair. And it's not permanent. You can reverse it with tons of moisture though that may take days or salt which will take mins. Just start slow by mix a bit with your regular conditioner. Your hair should feel stiff and strengthened but not too straw like. Then follow up with a deep conditioner

    I've seen you and others use and review Olaplex 3 to reconstruct your hair. It's also touted as being good to use prior to coloring your hair. I have used it for regular reconstruction and prior to my latest color treatment 2 weeks ago. I assumed (I know) that it had proteins in it, but then you didn't mention it in this video. So, I went and looked. It does not. So, my question to you is what's the difference between Olaplex 3 and a protein treatment? When should you use one or the other? I also just watched your video on the No Product Protein Wash Day (I'm not sure if that's its exact title) where you use a protein additive that is usually used for color treatments. So, I am totally confused as to what I should do to protect my hair before and after a color treatment. I don't do this very often, but if I've learned nothing else during this pandemic, I NEED to color my hair more now ever.

    • @hildrethbabyy
      @hildrethbabyy 3 года назад +4

      You definitely need a combo of both! Olaplex is a bonding treatment, which means it reforms disulfide bonds in the hair, whereas protein repairs the keratin bonds in your hair. Both types of bonds are damaged by heat, coloring, chemical treatments, etc. So both need their separate treatments! Hope that helped! ❤

    • @sheryladams2399
      @sheryladams2399 3 года назад

      @@shawneepierce704 Courtney likes Jessie Curl Deep Conditioning Treatment. No protein. I’ve used it and liked it.
      However, I’ve recently found a full line (including a curl cream) of customized hair products called Prose. It comes with either a pre-shampoo scalp mask or a pre-shampoo hair mask. I went all in at the end of September and my hair (which had dried out and was probably on protein overload) from the first used has been soft and fluffy and much less tangly. You answer a lot of questions about your hair, how your wear it, how you wash it, what your lifestyle is (workouts and where) and then where you live. It adjusts for pollution, hard/soft water, sun and, of course humidity. My hair does not like glycerin and the only product with it in it is the curl cream and it’s about 1/2 way thru the list. AND you get to adjust the formulas as you go. It’s a little pricey, but I’ve been using it over a month and a half and have only replaced the curl cream at $25 (the going rate for most products). I’ve still got about 1/3 each of the mask, shampoo and conditioner. HINT: they don’t automatically put into your system the leave-in or curl cream, so add them. Both are MUSTS. Easy styling and quick refreshes using both products. I tried just the curl cream, but I still got more tangles than I wanted. They DO, however, automatically put in their hair oil which is steep ($48), but will last me longer than its use by date I’m sure as it’s a larger than most bottle and I only use it on occasion. You can opt out and add any of their products and they are made to order according to your consultation results. Oh, and you can pick your fragrance or go fragrance free, like I did. And fragrance free is exactly that - except for the oil, but it smells deliciously like almond oil and does not bother my EXTREMELY sensitive nose.
      Back to your original question, the Prose hair mask is THE BOMB! But Jessie Curl is a good OTC alternative.

I've never been able to use hairspray. for instance Shea Moisture was so heavily perfumed that when I opened the Ulta box it was like a punch in the face. I returned everything (something had leaked in shipping) without even using it. Their shampoo made my scalp very itchy & inflamed 😪 So basically any product has to pass the fragrance test *first* & unfortunately many of the shampoos/Leave-Ins people rave about are very, very scented.🤭 That's why I was interested in the protein filler since it allowed flexibility to add to any conditioner or styler I was already using. I also have Olaplex & should probably just give myself a treatment. I've noticed that Keratin products have made my hair feel dry & go straighter in the past soooooo I'm careful to not overdo protein.
