My favorite favorite hair channel! It’s strictly hair and not veering into other topics -and no offense but I look for hair content in hair channels. Great advice , simple , love your personality and explanations! You’re the best , Gena Marie!
Yes, I could see your hair is longer & fuller. As you said, it's hard to say if a hair serum alone is doing it. I think it helps though. I try to focus on complete proteins and also take collagen peptides supplements and bone broth.
There's a hairdresser on the platform who only recommends expensive products, which is not realistic for me. I signed up for his newsletter, and I just got a full list of costly products, Redken among them, that I can't afford. I stick to drugstore products. He always bashes people if they buy at Target or the drugstore. I have excellent results with drugstore brands. Not everyone has that luxury.
I really question the prices of these products. It's soap after all. I had straight hair for years and that changed about 6 yrs ago. Go figure. I have found curly/wavy hair needs a lot more attention to look good. While I like the look not sure I'm cut out for the maintenance which is why I am here trying to learn.
@chrismctague5015 It was overwhelming in the beginning 8 years ago when I grew my hair, but I managed to have a steady routine that it's not complicated, but that happened once I got to know my hair and what was best for it. I just invest time for wash day. That's the only moment I need time and it's once a week.
I used Aveda Be Curly line years ago and hated it so much. It's been "re-formulated" but I'm not interested in spending that much money again just to check.
I'm really glad I watched this video because I watch a different creator and she uses that gel and the be curly primer/heat protector spray every time I see on of their channel's videos. I was going to try some of their products. I'm glad to see the curl cream and curl jelly from Umberto Gianini because I have those but haven't used them much.
We so appreciate your reviews on these products that we aren't sure of. That's why we respect your opinion on these reviews. Thank you curly sis I love your content. It helps me to decide on my products.
I swear we need to normalize frizzy curls because our products be stressing me out LOL as someone who has ALWAYS worn my curls (never straightened or blow dried regularly) I’ve had to learn my curls and their habits and changes throughout the years ( 1st pregnancy changed my texture big time!) I super enjoyed your aveda review when u did it especially since the products are so expensive! I was able to get my hands on it for Xmas and I have to say after the 2nd time of tweaking how much gel I applied it really works well!! I don’t have to refresh my hair but maybe only once a week! Once I apply just a bit of water on that refresh the gel reacts again and gains the cast all over again. I truly love it. It’s as you say , it depends on the hair type and the humidity. But I’m totally with you for me too if a product is over 20$ it better wow the crap out of me! I hold higher brands to higher standards! Thank you Gena for your honest u are the best! ❤
I know, increasing your protein overtime in your diet really does help with hair and nails(and having a balanced diet overall ).I’m a really big fan of this and I definitely can tell my hair grows really fast when I eat a good amount of protein every day. I personally like to eat 100 g per day . I also work out a lot as well. Thank you for all your content. I love watching you every Sunday afternoon!
I appreciate your comment. I'm a vegan veggie (40 yrs +) and still forget to be mindful of protein in my diet. I'm not out of the woods yet in using bond repair products for excessive hair loss and breakage. My plant-based collagen supps aren't making a difference (yet?). tysm ~ pb is going front & center on the countertop 😊 starting ... now!
I personally like to track my protein to help me get an idea where I am and how to improve. I really like the Lose It! app. Protein powder ,quest protein bars18g, Greek yogurt 16-23g, 24-26g 3oz chicken/meat, Cheese, eggs, 1/2c cottage cheese 14g, vegan protein powder ,7g nut butters/nuts chia seeds/seeds, tempe, tofu, beans, legumes, and quinoa. I’m sure you can even Google more!
@bethanyrose3273 ~ Thanks so much for the protein ideas.I do eat a lot of nuts, beans, chia seeds, and the occasional protein energy bars. I'm going to log my intake and keep a proper tally. I can improve my diet and focus more on nutritional management.
Gena loved this video. Have followed you for years and remember when you started to have concerns about your hair thinning. Over the last several months when watching your videos I felt your hair looked much thicker, longer, fuller and healthier. Loved that you were honest about the dislikes because another influencer always pushes the expensive lines and they never worked for me.
I compare every gel to the Ouidad stronger hold too! And thank you for mentioning that curl type is not the be all, end all. I have wavy hair and find wavy hair products to give me billowy, frizzy hair. My hair is high porosity, thick, and coarse. “Curly” hair products work great on me.
Gena your hair definitely looks thicker! I like using this product because I have less grays growing in and can go longer without root touch ups! Thanks for a great video 💯❤️💋
Thanks for outting those expensive gels. I’ve considered buying the Aveda gel but I live in the south with loads of humidity 🥵. Light hold is a no for me
You are amazingly intense and thorough! I love these videos! I don’t comment a lot, you have helped me so much! I really really appreciate the work you put in!❤
I finally grabbed the ouidad gel based on how much you love it. I haven’t tried it yet, but can’t wait to see how it works for me. I’ll be trying it on my next wash day😊
I really respect you realizing the power of your platform to not raise the red flag of victory on the LP Density serum but the results are clear. I don’t trust the ingredients with LP and I’m afraid to put it on my hair but will try this. Thanks for your honesty and information on it taking consistent applications that take months to show results.
Hi Gena I lost a ton of hair last year due to malabsorption from gut issues. My vitamin and mineral levels were extremely low causing my extreme shedding (at least half my hair which was fortunately high density to start with). My blood tests are back to normal levels and I'm seeing a lot of regrowth. If hair loss is an issue please see a healthcare provider who can order blood tests - it's essential for picking up underlying issues. No hair loss serum will help with deficiencies and are a waste of money. For true pattern hair loss minoxidil is the gold standard and should be discussed with your Doctor. As to my favourite new discovery of the year it's Camille Rose butter gel. As close to a one and done styler as I have found. I have very coarse textured dry protein sensitive curly hair. It's a constant moisture struggle and most gels dry me out. This gives me soft smooth curls used over a leave in or cream (I am super dry and am long past transitioning aka virgin curly hair with no colour and has never been straightened). I would rather sacrifice a little hold for less dryness and it's easily refreshed should I feel like I need to do so. I get about three days before I need to really refresh it. My favourite product of all time however is the Jessiecurl deep moisture mask (mask, conditioner and leave in for me). Best wishes x
Gena you are amazing!! Unfortunately a lot of the products aren’t available in Australia or they’re very very expensive. However I love the AG Recoil it’s so fabulous on my sparse hair. I lashed out and got the Ouidad because you love it so much but it really showed me what you mean about a softer cast. In South Australia our climate is Mediterranean but hotter in summer and I get sweaty. I can’t really afford to buy a heap of products but you are making a huge difference to my baldy head. Love you Karen 🇦🇺🩷
I'm super pumped about the Umberto Gianini products you reviewed because I have them. I went overboard when I started this journey and am working through what I have. I havent used those products much yet. I also have the shampoo and conditioner because they were affordable. Ill try them tomorrow because its wash day.
Very helpful video Gena, thank you! I love your methodical way of testing products and I'm in awe of your amazing memory for comparing products and ingredients with each other. I also agree with you, when it comes to gels I WANT a crunch: a strong cast is so necessary for me to achieve clumps and to reduce frizz. So I also avoid gels that claim to dry crunch free 😄
I like products with heat protection, protein, and conditioner all in one. I use the curlsmith heat protectant spray and find the bottle awkward to use. Olaplex leave in conditioner works well with a heat protector, moisture, and I think a bonding protien. Thank you for breaking these products down for us and giving us your honest opinion. What works for one doesn't mean it works for all. You repeat that throughout. You help us narrow down products to try. It is very expensive trying to figure out what works for our own hair.
I don’t like any of curl Smith’s products either that I have tried .they do not work for me. And I have tried quite a few. But I love there blow dryer and diffuser!
My pocketbook definitely needs drugstore brands. However finding the perfect gel has been elusive. My fine wavy hair just hasn’t responded well to any gel I’ve tried.
I am SO picky on gel and hairspray. I need my gel to give a good cast but not leave any residue. Yuck.. wellness therapy did not work for me. Mizani used to be one of my faves. I need to try it again. I want the crunch too so listening to you works for me 😂
Thank you for your great, informative videos! I went back to using Lush, I love their “Rehab” shampoo and their “Veganese” conditioner. There is also a great gentle everyday shampoo at Walmart from the brand Hairitage.
My favorites: I was experiencing a lot of hair loss. One time, it was a clump. I thought I was caring properly for my 3c/4a tight curls, high porosity, (but now low) density. I applied your recommended Briogeo Repair Mask. Wow, what a difference! There was significantly less breakage after one application. I had an Amazon return and took it to Kohl's; they had an instore coupon for 15% off at Sephora. I used it for the $35 jar of mask. I bought Ouidad's Unbreakable Bond and Repair Shampoo and Conditioner set during their Christmas sale of 40% off site wide. This line is amazing!! No more breakage, shedding is less than I see in yt vids where the host holds up their after-shower loss that the drain caught. A *lot* less 😊. My soaking-wet curl clumps are thicker and more defined. I often leave the conditioner on longer, donning a shower cap for about 10 minutes while scrubbing and use a wide tooth comb to distribute it befire rinsing. I use the Ouidad products once a week, alternating with a product type my hair says it needs 😉 for the other hair wash day (2x p/wk). Ouidad's 40% sale made it possible for me to save my hair through treatment. I've since noticed at cvs that L'Oréal has a bond repair line. Gena, have you tried it or assessed the ingredients? I'd love your evaluation and assessment of the ingredients. I'll need a more affordable go-to since my Rx deductible hits my budget very very hard for the next 3 months. Thank you for this valuable video. Happy healthy new year🎉
Gena, I can't remember if you've tried Divi products. I know a couple of people that use their scalp serum and they swear it works better for hair growth than anything they've ever used. From what I understand it's not cheap either
That’s a shame you don’t like the Miribel’s Natural Cleanser. That makes my hair so soft and I think it works well on the days you don’t need a hard wash. So interesting that what works for one doesn’t work for another! Thank you for your honest reviews.
I’ve never heard that and cannot see how that’s possible. It’s just a conditioning ingredient. It could build up if you’re not clarifying but all conditioning ingredients can
Gina, have you ever had an adverse reaction combining different products? I've been using the garnier fructis line of late. I really like the cream gel, but I suspect it's given me a really bad chemical burn on my head and neck like I've had 40 volume peroxide on my head for too long. Any suggestions for supper sensitive scalps?
I wonder is the ph too acidic- this is why I am afraid too try it. But I do like the new redken curl sculpting gel...it was released at the same time but does not have the acidic bonding ingredient.
I’d used the Living Proof serum for awhile- but HATE: 1) the price tag for how LITTLE product you get(!) **even with points/ coupons, & 2) *especially given the above problem- it should Not be HARD to access All.. of the product. The bottle is cute, but more in a gimmick way, as I’d discovered; the dropper does not reach low enough into the bottle base. Which on 1 hand,at not seem like a big deal. But the 100% FLAT top does Not properly facilitate having to pour the remaining applications out/ It Does Not Come Out 😮💨 & is a Whole thing … that no one has time for- for That cost. I am now experimenting with Coco & Eve; more product, proper dropper & bottle, etc., & less expensive. 🤞🏽 Anyone else used this brand?? Thanks in advance for any input.
Question! Would you say some breakage is normal even for healthy hair? I was wondering since even with the greatest routines everyone's hair is susceptible to some breakage since we do brush our hair/style it! :)
Oo Gena I forgot to tell you something. When you said that you think high end products are $30 US dollars the products in Aus are way more expensive. In your notes you mentioned slowing down of gray hair. Did you see any reduction in gray hair?

The Redken Acidic Bond Repair 14% treatment he suggests, is the same as L'Oréal Ever Pure Pre Shampoo Treatment, at 14% too. $10 versus $30.
