*Warning* I get rather sassy in this video...more than I normally do. Please see my heart in this. I am not claiming to be something I am not. I make it very clear on this channel that I consider my hair 2a, 2b, 2c hair. This is considered wavy. This video is meant to encourage people to embrace the hair that they are born with!
Your hair is beautiful and healthy and i wish I could just get out of the shower, brush my hair and live it .. you are so lucky Courtney😍 my hair is wavy and if I wont apply leave in, gel and mousse I will look like a lion monster 😃
Oh, yeah! Thanks for approaching this thorny subject! You have always been sincere and transparent and it's great! I am tired of feeling such a fake because my hair is a little frizzy and mostly straight when I don't style it, but then it's wavy and even curly when styled CG. I always feel I should confess to those that appreciate and compliment my hair and tell them that it's just styling. And when a man likes my hair, well... You can imagine the conflict inside me...
In the desert my hair is so much straighter. In the high humidity of the SE and PNW it is soooo frizzy if I don't either organize the waves or straighten it.
I'm #teamwavyandproud too ❤ love I can brush wet hair and go when I can't be bothered. I used to say, oh I'm just wavy - like it was less. Now I say I'm AM wavy and proud.
Curly gatekeeping is dumb. “If your hair only looks curly when you treat it like curly hair is supposed to be treated, then it’s not curly.” Do y’all even hear yourselves.
@Lokalu Kaldorei you guys act like you have curly hair. y’all are wannabes and literally forcing your hair to be curling BY LITERALLY USING HEAT to make it “look” BARELY curly.
@@_m.h who's using heat? You can diffuse w cold air. Also, soooo many curly girls also diffuse so uh what's ur point? Like how is that automatically mean anything?
@@_m.h partially agree with diffusing, but not w scrunching. if you have straight hair, scrunching it isn’t gonna all of the sudden make it wavy. you can’t create texture with your bare hands-if you could then there would barely be a market for heat styling tools!! if someone has hair that appears straight and frizzy when brushed, but when they scrunch it they get defined waves/curls, then their hair is wavy/curly. because the fact of the matter is, you can’t treat wavy hair like it’s straight, or it’ll be a mess. curly and wavy hair have different needs, but they’re more similar to each other than either are to straight hair.
True. My hair can be curly in parts, straight in others and wavy in-between. It just depends on how it air dries. I can curl it or straighten it easily, and I found that s2c method makes it very curly! I actually feel super lucky I have the flexibility :) Yes I get frizzy and stringy mess otherwise, but I think I notice/care about it more so than other people do. And s2c is so easy to do for a couple minutes I found it's easy to get nice curls. Love it!
For people out there who are dealing with frizzy and are wondering if they should do the curly girl method 🙃 Lauren Massey (the creator of the CGM) said "a frizz is a curl waiting to happen" 😊
Courtney, you have taught me how to embrace my curly hair! I'm transitioning, so you know the struggle is real. If it weren't for your videos, I wouldn't have the peace I do about myself, and my hair. So Thank you! I Am Enough!😊
I have forever dealt with frizzy hair and I never knew why. As a teen I straightened it because I didn't know what to do. It wasn't until my 30s that I started experimenting with products and styling and realized, WOW, MY HAIR IS ACTUALLY WAVY. The frizz was my unkempt waves *tear*
My hair turned into a literal ball of frizz when I went through puberty, which led to many years of chemical rebonding/straightening to manage it because otherwise I looked like I just walked out of the wilderness. 😂 I treated my hair like straight hair when it grew out, so I never saw a single curl, just some light zigzag waves on top. Then I discovered the curly girl method and oh my God, it blew my mind when the hairdresser told me I had curls...
From seeing the comments I feel that this needs to be said. The curly girl movement has a lot of crossover with the natural hair movement which is created for black girls with kinky curly hair to embrace their natural hair texture. Because, in case you didn’t know, for like ever black women have been told that their natural textured hair is inappropriate or unprofessional which leads to real life workplace discrimination. But I also think that a lot of white women feel that if their hair isn’t bone-straight, they are less attractive because for whatever weird reason a lot of men don’t like curly hair. Which is stupid but that’s another conversation. But at the end of the day we’re all being faced with exclusionary beauty standards and that actually leads us to destroying our hair trying to be someone else that we’re not. So at the day I think we all just need to have a little more empathy for all people all races but also recognize how different our experiences can be. Peace and love. Love you Courtney.
I knew an female executive who said curly hair couldn’t be taken seriously, just straight hair. It was the most insulting thing I had ever heard. The office was very diverse from a race and hair texture standpoint. I would never judge anyone for their hair. That has zero bearing on whether someone is capable of doing their job!!!
My boss has the potential for wavy curly hair and i was encouraging her to embrace and just to see but she said “ it makes me feel unkept” as I stand there with my wavy sorta frizzy hair down..... 🥴like I know she was talking about herself but there is a stigma around curly hair or wavy hair as wild untamed dirty messy unprofessional etc. It sucks especially when you already feel some type of way about your hair.
I was going to write this post but you did it! This issue is a lot more complex than I think some people realise so they react really intensely without necessarily seeing the entire picture.
I was looked down upon most of my childhood for having curls and am Caucasian. This happened to almost every other person I have known who also had curls. It definitely is “a thing”
I see, especially in instagram comments, people being downright nasty to wavy haired women for literally no reason. I’ve seen lots of “their hairs straight, if you use product it’s not natural” or “she’s forcing her hair to be curly”. Which is silly, but more importantly, why do people CARE?? Like you can do whatever you want with your hair, it’s hurting NO ONE. I don’t know why people can’t just mind their business...
@@anastasiadeleigh6917 Exactly. When we wavies don't have waves because we're scrunching to define them does that mean curlies don't have curls because they finger coil them? No. We all - wavies, curlies and kinkies - have textured hair and we all have different hacks and tricks to encourage its best shape 😊
@@_m.h Not necessarily true. My sister's hair is wavy whether or not she scrunches, but she straightens it most of the time because it's not curly. Throwing attitude at wavies doesn't help. Amot (the word shame or enough in Armenian)!!
Yeah idk why people are genuinely so butthurt about other women reaching their hair’s potential. Like how about you be happy for us instead of shitting on us for literally taking care of our hair. Also those people act like curly haired women also don’t use products and diffusers and scrunching and such… just cus their curls are tighter and can hold better without product doesn’t mean theirs are more “real.” Wavy hair is real lmao
@User Name honestly it always just seemed a bit nit-picky to me when people tell girls with wavy hair that it’s “wavy not curly” that’s why it feels like gate-keeping. I get that there’s a difference but I can kind of see how it comes off as insulting like a “You’re not on the same level as us” kind of vibe.
I’m mixed race half black with wavy/curly hair...everything doesn’t have to have a label people, we should all just be 🙃🙂 P.s. the cgm has changed my hair experience, I’m loving the results of less frizz, softer hair, poppin texture, and my individual expression with it! 😍
My sister and I are mixed too (Armenian, Native American, and German). I have curly hair and hers is wavy. We both have high density hair with mine being really coarse. Some people throw attitude at wavies like my sister. That irritates me. We sometimes say to each, "We definitely don't have odar (Armenian word for someone who isn't Armenian) hair despite being mixed." It's our way of embracing our hair textures.
My hair is a 2c, and it's straight when I comb it out wet but has a LOT of bends and waves when it dries. Depending on the products and styling techniques I use, it will end up very wavy or very curly. My granddaughter is biracial, and she has the best hair---big with loose coils. I'm so jealous! 😊♥️
I'm hoping for a future time when women lift each other up and support each other instead of telling each other we aren't enough. Straight, wavy, and curly is all beautiful. Each time I see a woman proudly being herself, I see it as victory.
Don't know who that girl (the disembodied voice) in the beginning is, but man gatekeeping is not a good look on anyone. So what if your hair is technically "wavy" not curly? So freakin' what? I'm sorry, are curly girls just scared of not being special anymore or something? Thanks for this video Courtney!
Bro I think curly haired girls will always be special regardless of us wavies, they don't need to gatekeep for worrying about not being special anymore
I have thick, dense hair. I have straight, wavy, and actual ringlet pieces all on my head. It's straight when wet and curls as it dries. It's as if the weight of the water no longer weighs the hair down as it dries. *gasp*
For the people so angry that someone with wavy hair dares call their hair curly....who hurt you? It's just hair! The moment directly before you heard them utter the word "curly" (gasp!) wasn't any different than the moment directly after. Their hair has absolutely no bearing on your life. Move along. Also, hahahahaha ohhhhh the irony......as someone with curly hair, the curls don't look perfect without lots of time and effort and products put into it either. If I didn't do anything to my own hair after washing, yes it would still be curly, but in more of an electrocuted mad scientist who frightens small children kind of way that isn't the look I'm going for.
Well the curly girl movement and method is similar to the natural hair movement where black women are embracing their kinky curly hair because it is viewed by some people to be inappropriate and unprofessional. So that’s who hurt them.
Breanna Northrup just about to say that 🙄 gate keeping is so wrong, but on the other hand it’s extremely ignorant to say that wavy headed and curly headed people have had the same exact experiences. Similar, of course, but it’s important for wavy heads and non poc w textured hair to understand that this bitterness is coming from a valid place, just maybe expressed in the wrong way.
@@breannanorthrup5498 I feel them there but the movements seem to be very separate things. And yes I can appreciate the anger in the natural hair community. There's plenty to be angry about.
blktauna yeah totally! They are not the same but I think it’s important to understand where this anger is coming from. Like I said. We can have empathy for everyone in the discussion.
Pre-CGM, when I would see friends the day I washed my hair, they would often ask if I curled it. Then, the next morning after brushing it (because I was taught to always brush my hair), it would just be wavy. As a once a week washer, my hair would just keep getting flatter from sleeping on it and brushing it until I washed it again (as evidenced in profile pic). But it was still never straight (except the occasional times I spent an hour blow drying to mostly dry on med/low temp with a brush, and then another half hour/hour with a straightener). My impression is that people compare to their own hair, so people with straight hair see the curliness in wavies, and people with curlier hair just see it as straight or maybe wavy, because it doesn't match how they define curly. Just my two cents, but it's not a competition to see who can be the curliest, right? We should learn to enjoy our own hair and appreciate the beauty in the variety of others' hair. *shrug* Also, I like the sass, Courtney. :-)
This! I have had people ask if I straightened my hair, because it stretches out easily when I dry brush and wear it up for a couple days. They just don't have the experience to understand how much wavy/curly hair can change depending on how it's treated. Truly, a fun hair type to have.
Yes! I'm the same and after learning about the CGM through this channel, I am finally getting a clue. Thank you for perfectly articulating what you go through; I can not only relate, I am beginning to understand how to work with instead of fight my hair and be more accepting. Better late than never. :-)
My hair is straighter than yours when I air dry but I can also get good waves when I style like you. Either way, the CGM has seriously improved the health of my hair. It is so soft, not tangly anymore and growing faster than it ever has. Thank you for all you Courtney! You've helped me love my hair again 😁
My hair is PIN straight when I air dry combined with finger combing and I get 2b-3a waves and curls when I style with protein, mousse and gel. I love the variety available to me using this method:)
Oh my word it's my hair. :) i always called it "straight with a kink". Lol your channel is awesome. I am still learning how to style my hair wavy. Its a lot of work and i probably wont do it all the time, but i love that i can! And no, i dont bother blowing dry and straightening, either. I have always had an "i dont care" look. That's what buns are for. :)
I just recently realized that the CGM for me (as a 2A gal) is more about to improve the health in my hair then actually "create" curls. I was too focused on the curl label on products, and having impossible expectations, when my hair is quite fine and easily weighed down. But I'm really enjoying watching content and I've learned a ton these last couple months!
I like it airdried. Its definitely not straight after drying. I have wavy hair too. I think its great we can really do any style we want, and pull it off. Another commenter got it on the nose. Its versatile. I get bored easy with my hair, so maybe God gave wavy hair to me for that reason. Its never the same.
But did you use product? 🤣 Because if you did it's apparently not valid as curly if you decide to call it that? I mean seriously. I like my wavy hair too, and wavy is part of the curl spectrum too (2-4). Not sure why it upsets so many, especially as many of us have both technically wavy and curly hair. Am I suppose to explain I have curly hair on bottom where I have never damaged the hair with dye and on top wavy? 🙄 Versatile is definitely a plus! 🙃
I so appreciate this video! As someone new to waves with EXTREMELY fine, low density hair it's hard to keep going when I have to do so much work to bring out/keep my waves- so much so that people in my life insist that I don't have waves at all.
I have fine, soft, high porosity, lower density, light brown hair. The back half of my hair curls perfectly (wet or dry- very small & tight, low density, ringlets). Meanwhile, the very front of my hair is just wavy to almost straight, with no product. So, I’m seriously confused as to what I should call my hair. 🤷♀️😂😅
Omg i have fine soft hair but i have a TON OF IT and it’s LONG so my hair often looks half wavy half straight :/ idk what to do! Like do i actually have waves?
Question: if the claim is that you don’t have curly hair because it is not curly when wet, but you also don’t have straight hair because you have to blow dry it or straighten it; then what kind of hair do you have?
I had that same problem, I always thought that I had wavy hair because it didn't dry out straight, but also the wave was an unshaped mess, so I always straightened it because I didn't like it. After transitioning and many products and styling techniques trials and errors, my hair is getting healthier and the waves are now there 😁
Don’t let these people’s insecurities and jealousy affect how you see your hair. None of us are trying to take anything away from the textured hair community. I understand why they feel that way (centuries of discrimination). But all I want is for my hair to look good down 🤷♀️. And it’s not about you.
My niece has bone straight hair and she does CGM just because it makes her hair and scalp so healthy. You still have curly hair, according to CGM. Ignore those who open their mouths and prove they are just judgy.
this is so informative!! i remember being in middle school HATING my hair and not ever knowing what to do with it. My mother has very straight hair so i never had anyone who could tell me how to take care of my wavy hair. I love ALL of your videos you’ve helped me so much !!
❤️ thank you for real life. I am so annoyed from all this „curlys“ on FB, YT or what ever that only posts their Curls or waves when they are perfect 🙄 they spend hundreds of hours and money to make it all look like that they are a curl queen. The Important thing is... accept your hair like it is and don‘t try to make it in something like it isn‘t. ( sry for my horrible english, i am german)
Hi. Thank you for this. When I came across the post you referred to I was so hurt. I am a person of colour with a combination of waves and curls and for a while I doubted my truth, my being, my usefulness here. Combine that with being light skinned poc and I was like - who am I. Thank you.
I love how you made your point in the intro without saying a word. 😄 You tell em, Courtney!! Haters gonna hate, but curls come in ALL shapes and sizes, so girls shouldn't shame anyone just bc their hair is "less" curly. But I can say with confidence- you DO NOT have straight hair! 😁💜 (But it IS positively beautiful!)
You have made me feel so much better!! My hair is horrible when it's air dried, flat, with some kinks, but frizzy and some what straight, but it has a curl once I throw some product in there. Now just to work on the health so it holds better. You are awesome, thanks A
I was raised by a straight haired mama with no clue what my hair was (aside from "unmanageable") lol I started CGM and found your channel earlier this year and knew my hair was wavy. When I got the last of the chemical damage cur off earlier this month, the stylist said it was not wavy... it's CURLY. I still call it wavy to avoid issues with folks, but there are spirals in there. And my hair is curly while wet for sure. It's limp by day 2 or 3, but as soon as water hits it, it bounces up again. It's a strange creature lol. If I had social media, I'd share. Our hair is a lot alike :) You really need helped my hair get better and give me a ton of confidence.
A lot of us have curly and wavy hair on the same head, something missing from discussions of the either wavy or curly dichotomy or worse 3A+ curly vs everything else "straight."
Omg that shine though!!! Still beautiful as heck even brushed out. Unlike mine. My hair brushed out looks like I stuck my finger in a light socket. Lol
I relate so much to disliking my hair and wanting it to be straight and not frizzy. Your videos and tips have helped me so much and I can genuinely say I now love the hair God gave me ❤️ this process of wearing my hair wavy has been so much fun!
I’m new to the wavy/curly community (menopause changed my super straight hair) and saddened that there are people out there that are curl snobs. My hair is very much like Courtney’s, except shorter, and I can go back and forth from wavy/curly to straight depending on my mood. Courtney, your hair is gorgeous either way.
That bit at the beginning of the video was intense. But thank you for this video. You are fierce! And sassy! And, you've helped me so much with my hair! I love the flexibility that my 2a, 2b, 2c hair gives me too! :)
I really appreciate the timing of this video as I’ve been feeling like a fraud or something because I have to do so much to get my waves. But yes, my hair looks similar to yours if I just dried it wet and then air dried. Then nice 2a/2b waves of I style it. I’m a little over a month into cgm. :)
Love the video, thank you for bringing this up! ❤️ I get a feeling there is a lot of hurt behind the “curly or not curly” discussion. I wonder if this would even be a topic of interest in an alternate reality, where people are just people and hair is just hair. I might be wrong though, since type 4 hair seems to be sometimes frowned upon and called “the bad hair” in the natural hair community. Or maybe that is the other side of the same hurt. In reality all hair texture is beautiful. Type 3 hair is gorgeous and types 1, 2 and 4 are too! They all deserve being pampered with healthy products and worn as the crowns they are! 👑 👑👑
I look at my hair as "Versatile." Its very similar to yours but slightly wavier with some twisty curls here and there. I'm happy I can wear it for a straight look (how I used to look before menopause changed my hair!!) to scrunching my wave, and adding products for a curlier look..As my husband said- I have the best of both worlds. And I do wear it straight-er 2 to 3 times a week and let it go more textured and wavy the other days. I'm ok with it, too.
Seeing you with your hair at 7:37 was really encouraging to me. I had much curlier locks when I was young, but as time went on and I straightened my hair for years and years (due to the uncontrollable frizz and inability to just leave my house without doing something to my hair, as you expressed), it's been discouraging to try to embrace the hair I was born with and wondering if I can make anything good of the waves I have now. And seeing your hair that way and especially the way you talk about how CGM is about embracing the health of one's hair, it helps me feel a bit better about not straightening my hair anymore. Thank you so much for your videos.
This definitely needed to be said. I just recently joined a curly/wavy hair care group on fb and a lot of the women in there are downright rude and disrespectful to each other and it’s really horrible to watch these women being so catty and tearing each other down. When I first joined I was singled out by some of them and told my hair isn’t really wavy because I don’t have a crazy amount of waves/definition, but my hair is definitely not 100% straight. My hair has bends throughout and when I add product and scrunch I can actually get a lot more wave definition and even spirals in places, and it’s very frizzy and slightly coarse and gets dry easily if I don’t take proper care of it. One woman even went as far to tell me that I needed to stay my a** out of the textured hair care aisle when I posted what products I had been using on my hair recently after I had followed some of your tutorials and bought some As I Am Cowash and Carol’s Daughter Moisture and Shine Shampoo because I had been dealing with super dry hair and nothing else I’d been trying had really helped and my hair started acting better after using those products. I’m so confused because I actually went to cosmetology school for 5 months and from what I learned while attending, wavy hair is a type of textured hair and I don’t think there should be this big of a divide over who uses what types of hair care products as there are much bigger things in life we should be worrying about
I mean I get what they're saying, I have true CURLY hair, I don't have to do anything to it to make it curly, and yes it's curly even when wet. But, just because my hair is naturally curlier than someone with wavy hair who trains it to be curly, I don't have a problem with anyone calling their hair curly, when it IS curly as the end result of their styling. Some people really can't make their hair curly without a curling iron. THAT'S not curly hair. But if you can scrunch it a little with a little product and the end result is curls, then you can call your hair curly. Doesn't matter if it's not quite as naturally curly as mine. I think some people are just curl snobs lol. Btw Courtney, your hair is beautiful, and it definitely isn't straight
I consider my hair to be wavy, it's actually very similar texture and weight to Courtney's so I'm so glad I found this channel. My son has adorable curls and no one would argue that his hair is curly - but when wet it's straight. I know other super curly haired people - we're talking Merida in brave level curly - whose hair is straight when it's washed and combed. Who cares! I agree 💯 with Courtney, the method is about loving the hair you are in!
Our (wavy) hair is like magic, we can switch it up whenever we want. How great is that!? My hair is what it is. Wavy or straight when I want to. And I follow whatever I feel like. Nobody has the right to decide for me. And I even don't care. I am who I am, and so are you.. 💙
Thank you for this video! Your hair still looks beautiful when it air dries with no product. I have very unruly hair when mine dries on its own with no product in it (straight pieces, bent pieces, frizz galore). Since following the CGM as closely as possible, and laying off of the blow dryer and flat iron, I think my hair has gotten healthier. Styling products have definitely helped with bringing out waves/curls. It’s like you said - it’s about embracing what you have and learning about what works best for you.
the gatekeeping of curly hair is what made me wait so long to start trying to take car of my 2B-2C hair. While we're at it I have the same issue with being midsize as well. Skinny people think I'm plus size, plus size people think I'm skinny. Straight hair girlies think I have curly hair, curly hair girlies think I have straight hair. Tired of the obsession with other people's bodies, I'm just trying to do the best I can for myself lmao.
Exactly! Lorraine Massey has a quote I love, “Frizz is a curl wanting to happen. My hair was always frizzy/puffy, wig the curly girl method helps to take the friz and define and curl. It’s just healthy for it. I can’t treat my hair like those who can air dry.
Thank you for sharing!!! I have noticed random spiral curls popping up throughout my hair the last year! All my friends told me I was crazy and I didn’t have curly hair, but I started the curly girl method about a month ago and am currently in transition- each wash I notice my hair get better and better! Your channel has given me so much hope for my hair!:)
I need a love button for this video...I almost cried! I'm still trying (and failing waayy more than succeeding) to find the products and routine that work for my hair. I found out that my tween daughter has lovely waves after taking her to an actual stylist for the first time. As I researched to help her, I realized that I am also a wavy girl who grew up perming or straightening my hair. I've been equally excited about finally embracing the hair GOD gave me and frustrated by how my hair loses all definition when it dries. This video was just what I needed!!!
I’m finally accepting the fact that I have wavy baaaarely curly hair lol 😂 for years I straightened my hair because I felt like my hair was a weird wild frizz thing. I’m glad I now know I was normal in my teen years lol my hair was just changing and going wavy instead of my childhood straight look 😍
Hahah, the comment on your corkscrew babyhairs in the front hit me. I have those as well and have been annoyed by them for YEARS! They always ruined my attempt at straight hair, and would stick out like horns, and I sometimes called them my "sheep-hair."
Your hair still looks amazing even when you do nothing to it!! I have fine wavy hair too, so I have been watching your videos for CGM advice!! I started CGM almost 3 weeks ago and have noticed a difference. Thank you for your videos, Courtney!
From like 7:45 and she's talking about the underlayer on the back of her head I'm thinking "mines kinda like that..." But the minute she started talking about the baby hairs that curl like a sprig in the summer in the slightest humidity "I said OMG yeah that's my hair"... I guess I shouldn't be surprised I had ringlets as a kid. Whenever I get those curls it's right on my hair line on the back of my next. And everytime my mom sees it she literally starts playing with it and is like "aw look look at that curl!" All excited like and I legit want nothing more then them to go away lol
You read my mind!!! I was needing this video from you! My hair is like your’s but slightly more wavy when I don’t do anything. I was just wondering if I should even try doing the CGM but this video convinced me it wouldn’t hurt :) Thank you! You’re so sweet and positive :)))
Wow I can’t believe the difference of your hair just dried being brushed out. This is so encouraging. I just started my wavy journey. I’m already seeing some progress from the one wash and style. Our hair can be very different depending on how we style it. Straight hair will never curl no matter what products you use on it. The gate keeping is insane.
Courtney I really want to thank you for posting this video. When I started my curly hair journey 9 years ago I thought that if I just kept it healthy it would curl more. And it did, but only to a beautiful wave with some curl in the front. The light bulb went off after watching your video. I realized that I needed to follow your squish to condish technique a little more thoroughly and actually take the time after washing my hair. I had thought that if I babied my hair, didn't use heat tools, and kept it healthy it would curl on its own. Now I'm putting the effort in and I'm seeing much more beautiful ringletty curls when I thought I only had wave. Thank you so much!
I am so glad I found you! A “Curly Girl” stylist told me my hair wasn’t curly enough for the CG method. P-shaw! My hair is just like yours. I have fought those curls my entire life! Now I finally know how to make them look nice. Thanks for all you do!
This video is exactly what we need. And with “we” I mean civilized people who are losing their self esteem fast cause of body shaming and exclusion by “real” curlies, cause yes, excluding someone cause their hair is not curly when it’s wet, is body shaming. Thank you Courtney for including everyone without any labels! Role model!
I'm learning a lot from you. Yeah, my hair is naturally wavier than yours and I do get ringlets after doing this for only a week or two BUT because you have to try a little harder because of your fine hair (mine is not fine) and 2a-c hair, you learned a lot of useful tips and then pass them on to us. So, I think you're the perfect person to learn tips from because I know if they work for you then they will absolutely work for me in most cases and with less effort. I'm really thankful for your channel. I could never do as much as you do. I can't afford all the products that you have either, but some gel or curl creme and some finger rolling works well and I like learning how to make my hair healthier because it's so dry and damaged.
I have been watching your videos for one year now. I have officially been doing the CGM for a whole year! You’ve helped me more than you’ll ever know and I finally have the hair I’ve always dreamed of!😍
My hair is 2AAA ;-) after scrunching looks like yours after doing nothing. For 45 years I thought my hair is straight but I noticed curls on my neck when I wear a ponytail. If I can achieve real 2A I am happy :D
Your intro is exactly how i feel about that stuff. 😭😭 I'm gonna rewatch it cuz its just so empowering for us 1c/2a/2b (s)wavies. U slayed it queen!!🥺☀️
Thank you for this. I understand that there are unique challenges for curly, kinky, and coily hair that wavies do not face. My hair was truly straight until middle school (all I had to do was brush it out in the mornings). Then I suddenly had to use a straightener to get the same result. It took years to cross my mind that there was a shift in the actual texture of my hair. Call it wavy or call it curly, there is texture to my hair (and I'm convinced that many more have texture than they've ever realized). The Curly Girl Method opened the door to possibilities for me in embracing the hair that God gave me. While I don't follow it strictly, the journey has been so freeing to me! Thanks, Courtney, for the helpful and encouraging videos. I love seeing a wavy represent well in this community!
Thank you so much Courtney ❤️ I don't know why the woman in that voiceover was so angry, but we should all have the freedom to do what's best for our hair.
Gotta say, if my hair looked like yours airdried, that would be amazing! lol. i just have full, strange, frizzy-straight. but with cgm I have mostly 2c-3a ringlets. so crazy how product and method changes the look so much! Although it would be nice for my product free days to be workable lol
Thank you, you are so sweet! I promise my hair didn't always look like this when I air dried it. it used to look like I was in electrocuted alpaca. After doing the curly girl method my hair has become so much healthier that now it really wants to behave. It did take a long time though.
Swavy Curly Courtney How long did it take for your hair to start looking normal? B/c I would say that most of my hair is straight, but when I don’t do anything to my hair and just let it air-dry, the front of my hair makes me look like a scared cat. I’ve started the cgm, not b/c I have curly hair, but b/c Ik that it will help me achieve my hair’s healthiest state.
Oh my goodness, my hair looks so close to yours when it's just brushed/air dried. I had already decided to give something akin to the CGM to see if I could get some extra wave definition and I honestly have no idea if I'd ever end up with curls/waves like yours. But honestly if I could get even halfway there I would be thrilled. So thanks for the extra motivation.
Great video!!!! All this needed to be said! I feel very lucky to have wavy hair. It looks like I've used a curling iron to make waves on purpose when I do my routine right! My hair is much healthier and less frizzy following the CG method. I've never been happier with my hair in my whole life ❤
I've spent two decades straightening my hair. When lockdown happened, I stopped blowing and straightening it. After a year of embracing my waves, I started to get curls. My hair needed to heal. Now I've started this new journey and trying to learn something new.
I wore my hair straight all my life, I always had some dodgy waves at the back, that I took care about with a straightener or round brush and heat. I had a pixie cut for years when covid happened and because I couldn't cut it monthly like usual I let it grow. To my surprise it came out more wavy than before, I was introduced to cgm and it worked! I have 2a with a few 2b pieces. I get better and better results as time goes by. Everyone around me questioned my wavy hair, I got all kind of comments, I started questioning if it was really wavy or I am forcing it to be that way with the help of the styling methods I use. I've reached a point where I don't care anymore and I love the fact that I can wear it wavy or straight with minimum damage. Your videos have been a great help for me and I am finally really enjoying taking care of my hair.
thank you! more people need to know this! my hair is very long and fine so if I don't help my curls out they're weighed down and almost completely flat. Sometimes I wish I had the coils and definition of other girls, but I'm slowly learning to appreciate my own hair
I range from 2c to 3b curls. When my hair is wet and I brush it, it’s dead straight. Being indian straight hair has always been desirable and the standard for beautiful hair. It took me a long time to embrace my hair and now that I have I don’t need people telling me what my hair is or isn’t. My hair depends on how I style it, it can be very curly, or if I want waves I just brush it when it’s wet. No two days are the same. My hair is easily manipulated. And I love it ❤️
I'm an indian too and sometimes I wish I just had straight hair, the constant questions on how can I stay without combing my hair and sometimes when I'm happy with the way my waves turned out that make comments like your hair looks like a mess. Like how is that supposed to make me feel. sorry didn't mean to rant😅 Anyway I'm glad you love and embrace your hair
This video inspired me to give my day 5 stretched out and super dry curls/waves some love! After a couple of disappointing wash days in a row recently I'd honestly fallen out of love with my curl pattern and been throwing it up in a bun and neglecting it more often than not. I've been wearing my natural hair since Feb so the honeymoon period is well and truly over haha. This served as a perfect reminder to not compare my curls to anyone elses (even my own on a "better" day) and just put the love and care into my hair because it's what it and I deserve to be healthy and happy
Thank you so much for this video! I was wondering exactly that, . My hair looks like yours. I watched a lot of your videos, bought decent products and my hair went from frizzy boring straight to wavy/kind of curly. But then I started thinking that maybe I was "faking" the wavy texture. What you said about curly hair products making hair healthier was really helpful at changing the way I was thinking. And obviously, seeing your "natural" hair, without any styling, changed my mind too!
I absolutely love this video!! When my hair was transitioning, I felt like I was trying to force my hair to be wavy/curly. I almost felt embarrassed to admit that I was trying the CGM. Now, I'm so proud of my waves and curls. Also, I love your sass! Please, tell me the shirt your wearing is going to be a shirt you sell 🤞🤞🙏🙏
I have been watching your videos for a little while now because I have wavy hair with large ringlets with very dry frizzy hair and scalp. I started doing the curly girl method using grocery store products from which people using the curly girl method recommended with good results but I and my husband cannot handle the perfumes. I recently purchased Jessicurl products 2oz products worth about $35.00. When the products arrived it had lots of samples included. My hair started doing quite well with the itchy scalp going away. I had a stroke in 2018 at 63 years old. A year later I noticed my curly dry hair. My stylist recommended not using a brush nor a comb. I was appalled not knowing what she was advising. I began researching how to handle curly hair this year in desperation. After several different stylist I found one that understand curly hair. She said my hair was medium thickness (with some gray course thrown in) wavy, curly hair. My scalp and hair thank you for the quality information. You are a blessing!!
My hair looks almost EXACTLY like yours when air dried. I am just new to learning how to work with it to get beautiful wave and curl like yours! I am just so sick of blow drying, then straightening my hair, all for the frizz to show through a couple hours later.
I never straightened my hair but it was always overly voluminous and annoying. Finding the curly girl method and adjusting to my preferences has been a lot of fun and I never thought my hair could have as much texture as I can get now - and it hasn't even been 2 months of experimenting with it! Your videos have been so helpful and fun!
I am so glad that you made this video because I have always been told that my hair was not curly because when I wet it, it’s completely straight. I started to feel insecure about my hair because when people said this, it made me feel like my hair was just naturally frizzy and dry and there was just no way to fix it. But, once I started the curly girl method my hair became much healthier and softer. So again, thanks for making this video!
Thank you for this video!! I was still kind of on the fence about this, but NOT now! My hair actually has more “curly” when air dried than you had in this video. I am still having trouble getting products right and finding out what works best for me.
Lion's mane! I get a lion's mane of curls when I wear a ponytail, especially when I workout and get sweaty. I've always called it my lion's mane. My air dried, no product hair looks similar to yours, but maybe slightly bendier overall. I don't have the patience for CGM, but I have been loving leave-in conditioners to tame the frizz.
I wish I could give this video a million thumbs ups and hearts 💕. Thank you, Courtney, for being such a positive influencer in an all too often negative, harsh environment.
Oh my gosh. Without doing the curly girl method I have the exact same hair are you’re describing or your hair. I’ve been to scared to try this method because I didn’t think it would work. Ohhh, ok. Exciting!
If only my hair looked as perfect as yours does by doing nothing but brushing it and air drying it! 😂 Your natural hair is goals for sure! I’m hoping as mine gets healthier and grows out a bit it will do something resembling yours! Also your curls/waves are beautiful too!
Wow. I have very similar hair. Im considering learning how to have good hair without flat ironing it. Just seems like a lot of work but your styled hair looks so nice. Maybe ill give it a try!
I know just about everybody says this, and I've said it before on your videos as well, but you have such a charming and genuine presence in your videos. Would be an absolute treat to know you in real life as a friend/coworker/cousin/sister, whatever! Keep advocating for women to embrace their "fearfully and wonderfully made" selves, regardless of the frizzy kinks, curls, or pin-straight strands of protein-filaments that grow out of their scalps :)
OMG! My hair is exactly like yours. I didn't realize until seeing this video that I too am a "curly girl". I stumbled on your video somehow and never knew about the curly girl method until now (and I'm in my fifties). The years I wasted, feeling bad and being shamed if I didn't "style"--aka torture--my hair... I stopped blow drying my hair a decade ago but occasionally would curl it to "style" it. Most days, I would end up with had beachy waves but after sleeping on it, frizz and kinks. I have long been "curl-curious" and spent countless hours in the haircare isle wondering if a curl definer would help, but the way the products are organized and the names of the products led me to believe they weren't for me. (I have your skin, hair, and eye color). So, I didn't realize I could enhance my wavy hair in such a way that I could achieve better hair health and a more reliable outcome. I'm now binge watching all your videos intent on embarking on a curly girl journey of my own. Thank you!
I was just trying to explain this curly hair competition between us wavy/curly haired ladies, to my husband. I really appreciate that you covered this subject! It’s frustrating to have to feel like you’re a liar if ALL of your hair isn’t ringlets 24/7. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you!
Omg Courtney I LOVE this vid 😍
@@_m.h are u saying ppl w wavy hair should treat it like it’s straight
@@Olivia-wg8gv no i’m saying that if u have to diffuse and scrunch your hair to make it curly then it’s not naturally curly
That's it, we, wavy girls, have many options, out hair is versatile. I'm also starting to make peace with my hair
I was just telling my daughter this morning how versatile her 2a/b hair is. She's really starting to love it!
True. My hair can be curly in parts, straight in others and wavy in-between. It just depends on how it air dries.
I can curl it or straighten it easily, and I found that s2c method makes it very curly! I actually feel super lucky I have the flexibility :)
Yes I get frizzy and stringy mess otherwise, but I think I notice/care about it more so than other people do. And s2c is so easy to do for a couple minutes I found it's easy to get nice curls. Love it!
Awww, that’s awesome! 🤗🤗
my hair is very curly after I shampoo and condition and it's soaking wet it's super curly but nothing I do can keep it curly it falls wavy :(
For people out there who are dealing with frizzy and are wondering if they should do the curly girl method 🙃 Lauren Massey (the creator of the CGM) said "a frizz is a curl waiting to happen" 😊
YES!!! Exactly!
Courtney, you have taught me how to embrace my curly hair! I'm transitioning, so you know the struggle is real. If it weren't for your videos, I wouldn't have the peace I do about myself, and my hair. So Thank you! I Am Enough!😊
Thank you so much i needed this!!
Accept your natural hair. That is all there is. On days that you don't, do what you want!
I don’t know why people can’t just mind their business...
yea but the thing is that they’re acting has if they have our curly hair, they’re forcing their hair and scrunching it to get it *barely* curly
@@_m.h forcing it by scrunching it? And most curly hair people don't do anything or use any products. Seriously? 🙄
I'm so sick of the curl snobs
The shamers
Sometimes my hair is wavy sometimes curly
I say I have textured hair and can care less of others opinions
@User Name honestly it always just seemed a bit nit-picky to me when people tell girls with wavy hair that it’s “wavy not curly” that’s why it feels like gate-keeping. I get that there’s a difference but I can kind of see how it comes off as insulting like a “You’re not on the same level as us” kind of vibe.
Me too! There's a great Armenian word that comes to mind when thinking of the curl shamers. Amot (shame or enough).
@User Name well these "educators" say that ur hair isn't curly, if it isn't curly wet. "it's wavy" they say as i'm sitting here with 3a-3c curls....
Right? Like who gatekeeps a hair type?
I’m mixed race half black with wavy/curly hair...everything doesn’t have to have a label people, we should all just be 🙃🙂
P.s. the cgm has changed my hair experience, I’m loving the results of less frizz, softer hair, poppin texture, and my individual expression with it!
Thanks for this video Courtney!
seriously... who is that person... how bad is their life they had to act out like that
Bro I think curly haired girls will always be special regardless of us wavies, they don't need to gatekeep for worrying about not being special anymore
She’s black. 😐
I have thick, dense hair. I have straight, wavy, and actual ringlet pieces all on my head. It's straight when wet and curls as it dries. It's as if the weight of the water no longer weighs the hair down as it dries. *gasp*
you just described my hair exactly! 😂
Amelia W yes girl!!
Your hair looks so pretty no matter what you do to it. I’m black with 3c hair and your videos have helped me so much. Don’t let anyone steal your joy.
How do you deal with the transition phase?? Some of my hair are wavy, some are straight but frizzy 😭
Yes!!! Love this!
I have been told I'm "making" my hair wavy by scrunching/plopping and there's no natural texture
@@Lovetehmusicz they are just jelly💚
I have fine, low density hair too. Do what makes you happy with your hair
Most likely naturally wavy hair that isn't super healthy. At least thats what ive gathered from all of the beginning cgm videos.
I had that same problem, I always thought that I had wavy hair because it didn't dry out straight, but also the wave was an unshaped mess, so I always straightened it because I didn't like it. After transitioning and many products and styling techniques trials and errors, my hair is getting healthier and the waves are now there 😁
You have your hair...and it is beautiful.
You might have 1c or 2a hair. Another RUclipsr with 2a hair mentioned the same thing. I have it too.
I think everybody missed the point the comment was trying to make.
I am so annoyed from all this „curlys“ on FB, YT or what ever that only posts their Curls or waves when they are perfect 🙄
they spend hundreds of hours and money to make it all look like that they are a curl queen.
The Important thing is... accept your hair like it is and don‘t try to make it in something like it isn‘t.
( sry for my horrible english, i am german)
Danke!
(But it IS positively beautiful!)
I don’t know why but I got a little emotional watching this. I’ve been at war with my hair for 32 years. Thank you for posting this!
I Don't know.. Why people say wavy hair is ugly??? It's the Most beautiful hair..WAVY hair is a love..wish I Have wavy hair too
Great video Courtney! All waves and curls are beautiful 😍 Thanks for the mention, too!
THANK YOU! Your tic tok made me punch the air and cheer!
You have made me feel so much better!! My hair is horrible when it's air dried, flat, with some kinks, but frizzy and some what straight, but it has a curl once I throw some product in there. Now just to work on the health so it holds better. You are awesome, thanks A
Your Air dried and no product is still super beautiful. The shine game is amazing, looks super healthy. 🥰
I was raised by a straight haired mama with no clue what my hair was (aside from "unmanageable") lol
I started CGM and found your channel earlier this year and knew my hair was wavy.
Omg, omg, omg me too!! So friggin weird!!
Day 1 of testing out curly products and methods I got barely 2a results. It is now week 4 and my hair transitioned to 3a curl pattern. 😊
That bit at the beginning of the video was intense. But thank you for this video. You are fierce! And sassy! And, you've helped me so much with my hair! I love the flexibility that my 2a, 2b, 2c hair gives me too! :)
The intro to this video is everything 😂👏🏼💪🏼
I really appreciate the timing of this video as I’ve been feeling like a fraud or something because I have to do so much to get my waves. But yes, my hair looks similar to yours if I just dried it wet and then air dried. Then nice 2a/2b waves of I style it. I’m a little over a month into cgm. :)
Love the video, thank you for bringing this up! ❤️
I get a feeling there is a lot of hurt behind the “curly or not curly” discussion.
YES GIRL!! I even tell my straight haired friends to watch your videos because its about the health of your hair!!🥰
I’m so confused because I actually went to cosmetology school for 5 months and from what I learned while attending, wavy hair is a type of textured hair and I don’t think there should be this big of a divide over who uses what types of hair care products as there are much bigger things in life we should be worrying about
Thank you so much for this. I came wondering if I have wavy hair but left knowing I just need healthy hair. Inspired!
Love this so much! Thank you!
I always thought I just had straight, very frizzy and complicated hair, your channel helped me a lot to treat and control my hair and now I love it ❤️
I’m finally accepting the fact that I have wavy baaaarely curly hair lol 😂 for years I straightened my hair because I felt like my hair was a weird wild frizz thing.
I love the versatility to wear my hair scrunched and srongly wavey or soft and gently wavy
You read my mind!!! I was needing this video from you! My hair is like your’s but slightly more wavy when I don’t do anything. I was just wondering if I should even try doing the CGM but this video convinced me it wouldn’t hurt :) Thank you! You’re so sweet and positive :)))
Thank you for helping me accept my not really curly nor wavy nor straight hair ! Love your content 😘
Wow! That is crazy they told you that! And thank you! I am so glad this helps you!
You're hair is crazy shiny and soft looking with nothing done to it and that's amazing! Obviously you're doing something right!! 🥰
I'm gonna rewatch it cuz its just so empowering for us 1c/2a/2b (s)wavies.
U slayed it queen!!🥺☀️
😭😭😭 Thank you for this!
Your hair air dried really pretty with no fuss. That’s great!
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney 😅 "electrocuted alpaca"
Like how is that supposed to make me feel.
sorry didn't mean to rant😅
Anyway I'm glad you love and embrace your hair
Your hair with nothing looks like mine with a little less demotion in the front can’t wait to start to do this with my hair!
I love you! We are here to lift people, not to put them down.
Ohhh, ok. Exciting!
Just want to say your natural hair/air dried is so beautiful and healthy! Even without any cgm going on it's stunning and I'd love your hair!
If only my hair looked as perfect as yours does by doing nothing but brushing it and air drying it! 😂 Your natural hair is goals for sure! I’m hoping as mine gets healthier and grows out a bit it will do something resembling yours! Also your curls/waves are beautiful too!
Yes! My hair is the same and I’ve learned to LOVE, truly love, the versatility it has! Thanks so much for this video ❤️
