Screw that guy!! I just tried to offer sheet him in NHL 24. 1 million over his asking price at that! He turned me down, stating he wanted to be with a contender. Jokes on you buddy, I switched the settings to semi-pro on won the next 4 cups
Silovs was drafted in 2019 also and he's been nothing but stellar. Definitely earned a backup spot and will probably be the starter after Demko. Deserves some recognition too
Nikishin is such a rare breed of defenseman in this age of hockey, Big and very physical guy who plays sound defensively while also being extremely productive in the offensive zone too. The last time a defenseman under the age of 25 came remotely close to Nikishin point per game output was Victor Hedman in the lockout season who seems like a decent comparable in terms of what both players bring to the table. Can’t wait for him to make his way over to Carolina hopefully next summer!
Still early but Luca Cagnoni from the Sharks talent last year (4 round #123) just broke the record for the most points by a man in the WHL with 90 points in 65 games (which was 30 years old). Still way too early to call it a steal but it's looking like a damn good one so far. Also just signed his ELC so he may get a bigger role now, probably in the AHL next season
If Cagnoni can improve his skating, he can be a heck of an NHLer and an absolute steal. Excited to see how his offense translates with the cuda in the AHL
Very ironic that everyone killed Carolina for the return they got for Jeff Skinner when the two picks they got back ended up becoming core building blocks in Nikishin and Kochetkov. Goes to show even subpar value picks can swing the perceived “winner” of a trade if you hit on said picks
Gavin Brindley at 18 has already won WJC20 gold and has gotten time with the US senior national team at the recent WC’s, and had a fantastic year at UM last season.
I have a video idea for the summer. With the 2024 draft being soon, how about doing a "best draft for every nhl team" and including trades and picks during set draft. Love your videos, keep up the good work!
meh, I think he would be 5th out of the d prospects. I like Grudinin and Nystrom way more then I do Heimosalmi. He got worse with Assat quite honestly, but I do hope he has a good season with the wolves though. Also I don't think he will be a 2-way guy either, more like DFD I would say.
For every skilled undersized player like stankoven who makes it, there's a bunch that don't, like nic petan (120 draft year whl points, 35 career nhl pts at 30). The size issue is still a thing because of how many don't make it because of it, you just don't hear about the failures as much
Denver Barkey with the Flyers deserves a shoutout due to being the 1C on that crazy London Knights team this year and along with Easton Cowan scoring at will at times. Kid was a third rounder too.
Alex Vlasic was an absolute steal. 2nd round, 43rd overall - he was one of the best defensive defensemen in the NHL last year. Looking at the defensemen that were drafted before him is a fun exercise
Wish Jack Devine was in this video...former classmate of mine fell all the way to round 7 for the panthers and popped of for Denver in the NCAA this year
Didnt really hear your criteria but 2019 4th rnd pick Jordan Spence 24pts, 71gp, 14:00 TOI 3rd pair with Andreas Englund who was a bit of an anchor, as well 2020 3rd rnd pick Alex Laferriere 12g, 23pts, 81gp, 2 7th rnd picks out of LA to watch in the upcoming season Andre Lee (19') and Aatu Jamsen (20'), Lee had a strong AHL season despite significant injury and Jamsen had 14g, 25pts, in 35 gp on a championship caliber team in Liga with the Pelicans
the fun thing about josh doan is that it's a similar story that his father got in the nhl! got drafted by a team that left their city after his 1st year in the nhl (Winnipeg) and then being the guy in arizona for 20 years now the same franchise change city again and a Doan could become a legend of the new city
I never understood all the love for Shane Doan. When he on the last year of last contracts, he had a NTC, but didn't agree to be traded. Arizona could have used those assets an Doan could resigned with Coyotes. But Doan preferred to not have a have the fun of deep playoff run and would prefer to golf in early April.
Yo, Alex Vlasic is already a full-time nhler and was a top 5 shutdown defenseman in the entire league. He was a -1 on the Hawks who were atrocious. That's incredible. Picked at 43 in 2019, this dude has been a bigger steal than anyone on the list this far into their careers.
I think Pavel Doropheyev keeps on being overlooked, 79th overall in 2019, and was kept by Vegas. You've gotta be good if you're a prospect and weren't traded by Vegas
Luca Cagnoni needs to start getting some respect at some point. 2023 late 4th Round (5 picks away from the 5th round). Most points by a WHL d-man since 1993 in his draft +1 year (90 points in 65 games) in a season where he was working on his defensive game. He'll get discredited because he's 5'9" but he's not a weak player. He's 185 lbs which is more than Bonk, who's 6'2". If he were in the Leafs, Habs, Rangers, etc. system, people would never stop talking about him.
Yes, but there’s a reason why he slid to round 4 as well. Sure, he has a some great offensive skill, but is it elite? It seems like his defensive game is a huge deterrent, so unless he comes out as a bonafide PP1 QB, I don’t think we should be using the “steal” term for him yet
I would have had Elias Salomonsson from the Jets on this list. His stat sheet isn’t anything that’ll jump out at you, but jets fans know from watching this kid that he’s legit. Super solid defenseman and he’ll likely be playing full time for the Jets within the next couple years
Josh Doan is in virtually the same situation his dad was in the mid 1990s. I think he'll be great, and have a similarly consistent 15 year+ career in mostly a second line role. Anything better than that is just gravy.
Some already mentioned JoshWawa as THE steal of that 2021 draft class, which he is, but I would've also placed Janis Moser over Stankoven & Doan in the steals of that year. He got selected much later in that 2nd round and has been doing pretty amazing for a late 2nd rounder D on a struggling team when Stankoven has nothing but starplayers around him. Also feel Poitras from the 2022 draft is worthy of a mention, don't think anyone expected him to be this good this early for Boston. Not even Bruins fans.

Joshua Roy, Matthew Knies, Jacob Fowler, Gavin Brindley, Andrew Cristall, Matt Poitras
Matthew knies isn’t really a prospect anymore he’s had a full season and a half
@@boreddingercity yeah i guess but this video is titled recent draft picks so if we’re going off of that i’d consider him a steal
Easton Cowen too

It's still way too early, but Jacob Fowler looks like a nice steal for the Habs at 69th overall.
nice.

Damn, here I thought he wasn’t a man. Thanks for clarifying 😂
He also improved his defense. Something he needed to do because of his size.
Musty is another prospect they have you could consider a steal but it’s hard to say when these prospects haven’t made it to the NHL/AHL yet
If Cagnoni can improve his skating, he can be a heck of an NHLer and an absolute steal. Excited to see how his offense translates with the cuda in the AHL

Huge miss on Olen Zellweger
bogdan konyushkov as well. 4th round for the habs and i could be wrong but i think hes already captain for his khl team

I'll never forgive Jarmo.
