Nikishin is such a rare breed of defenseman in this age of hockey, Big and very physical guy who plays sound defensively while also being extremely productive in the offensive zone too. The last time a defenseman under the age of 25 came remotely close to Nikishin point per game output was Victor Hedman in the lockout season who seems like a decent comparable in terms of what both players bring to the table. Can’t wait for him to make his way over to Carolina hopefully next summer!

Still early but Luca Cagnoni from the Sharks talent last year (4 round #123) just broke the record for the most points by a man in the WHL with 90 points in 65 games (which was 30 years old). Still way too early to call it a steal but it's looking like a damn good one so far. Also just signed his ELC so he may get a bigger role now, probably in the AHL next season

Very ironic that everyone killed Carolina for the return they got for Jeff Skinner when the two picks they got back ended up becoming core building blocks in Nikishin and Kochetkov.
Goes to show even subpar value picks can swing the perceived “winner” of a trade if you hit on said picks

Luca Cagnoni needs to start getting some respect at some point. 2023 late 4th Round (5 picks away from the 5th round).
Most points by a WHL d-man since 1993 in his draft +1 year (90 points in 65 games) in a season where he was working on his defensive game. He'll get discredited because he's 5'9" but he's not a weak player. He's 185 lbs which is more than Bonk, who's 6'2". If he were in the Leafs, Habs, Rangers, etc. system, people would never stop talking about him.

Yes, but there’s a reason why he slid to round 4 as well. Sure, he has a some great offensive skill, but is it elite? It seems like his defensive game is a huge deterrent, so unless he comes out as a bonafide PP1 QB, I don’t think we should be using the “steal” term for him yet

One thing, I wouldn’t call Hutson an elite skater. It looks like he is by how many strides and how fast he’s doing them. But in overtime against Detroit, we saw the difference between him and a truly elite skater in Raymond. Raymond’s skating form is perfect and in the distance from the centre ice to the net Raymond gained a few feet on Hutson with way less effort on his part.
If Hudson can fix his fundamentals then for sure, but for now I say he’s average to above average, not elite.

i Think that the Habs picking Demidov 5th Overall this year is quite a steal. he probably should've gone to chicago (2nd) or Anaheim (3rd)

Imo if you’re later than second round and already playing in the nhl under 25 is already a steal, you don’t expect much from players above the 3rd

Lane Hutson could be no better then John Klingberg or be as good as Quinn Hughes. One of the weirdest projects i've seen. Celling: Norris winner, PPG top 5 defenseman. Floor: 30 point bottom 4 offenive defenseman. As a Habs fan. I lean more to a 65-70 point #1 offensive defenseman as he's dominated in USA u18. WJC, NCAA and looked great in 2 tough NHL games.
