Steve thanks for being so humble on the DVD and thus setting such a great example for all drummers out there. Between this "Late in the Evening" and "50 ways" man the complexity is golden joy to the ear. We love how technical some of your grooves are, they raise the bar to better music and challenge all worthy drummers. Rock on! Peace, and Music - - FreeTIm
I could listen to gadd groove all day. Anyone know of a collection of extended grooves. Like Gadd Grooving for and entire CD or something? I'd love that.
In the beginning the earth was without sound, and void; and deafness was upon the face of the Earth And the Spirit of Gadd moved upon the face of the skins. And Gadd said, Let there be groove: and there was groove. And Gadd heard the groove, that it was good: and Gadd removed the void from the deafness and on no day, Gadd rested.
even when he shows that sticking mozambique to the crowd, its soooo simple but u put a metronome to that(and remember he was just showing somone something real slow halve heartdly) and you would see he would be perfectly in sync the whole damn way
No problem. I'm glad to help. I just hope it made sense enough to help you. Just start slow & be patient with yourself & before u know it you'll be playing it like Gadd around the kit.
@wolloolloo It's not just about how ahrd the song is to play, imagine how creative you've gotta be to come up with a groove like this, and play it with such awesome feel :)
You're also going to want to check out Peter Erskine and Keith Carlock, to get the complete "scope", if you haven't already done so. They're sort of like a "trilogy" (not to be compared, but experienced in their own right), if you know what I mean :-)
What I think makes Steve Gadd so great isn't any groove. It's his sound. It's his "tone". I'm a guitarist and piano player, so feel free to jump all over me about this, but I think he gets a sound out of the drums that is exactly what I crave, and I don't know anybody else who's quite there - regardless of what they're actually playing. Is it the heads? The tension? The mics? The attack? The sticks? Where he hits the heads? I have no clue, obviously. Perhaps one of you could enlighten me...
SakDaddy Vic Firth made an off-hand comment on Steve "pulling" the tone out of the drums in much the same way you do on tympani. It's a feel you develop listening to your drums.
+InsertName130 Tone is right, 130, Gadd has a sought-after studio sound (part of which is indeed his top dollar touch coaxing desired tones out of the drums). As you know, the gear a musician plays contributes to their sound in many cases, sometimes significantly. If you wanna sound like Gadd, start with birch Yammies with thicker drumheads like Evans Hydraulic or G2, Remo Emperor or Pinstripe heads. I bought a set of Yamaha drums this month and put Pinstripes on all toms. After two weeks re-tuning the heads several times a day, using gel clings to reduce ring and sympathetic vibrations I finally threw the gel away and got the damn things tweaked. Yamahas have a full-voiced wet slap with a slight touch of dryness, a succinct studio-friendly decay with lush but contained overtones. Now my new set sounds the way Gadd's did on those seventies Al Di Meola records. I was trying to tune them like Vinnie Colaiuta's on Zildjian Day 1984 but I'm not unhappy though. If it's good enough for Steve it's good enough for me.
@drummerkingmike I agree completely. It's the same as BB King or any blues musician especially. Some of what they play is simple.... but they make it sound godly. You can play it note for note and it will never sound as good.
Hip hop was around almost 30 years before Travis Barker became known. There were many drummers who incorporated hip hop into their overall style well before Travis.
HEY, COULD ANYONE PLEASE GIVE ME THE STICKING PATTERN? I tried following but i just can't.. I also tried writing them down. just a simple L(left) and R(right) will do.. Ex. LRLL LRLL LRL thingy.. that would be really helpful. thank u so much.
@andyauyong well i think the thing is that any intermediate drummer can pick up a pairs of sticks and sound like travis barker with steve its not what he plays its how he plays it and i bet no one can sound like steve gadd also "simplicity is not stupidity"
SylarTheBest has it right, but if it made it easier for you, you could insert a L after the very first R. Then the sticking would be like this, where each R or L is a 16th note: RLRLRRLRLRRLRRLL Try breaking down into groups of four if that helps. Eventually you could try taking out that first left and you'd have what SylarTheBest wrote. Once you feel like you've got it, take out all L's & you'll get the Mozambique-ish cowbell pattern. Good luck!!
@joeglimmix hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha i was almost expecting Zep too when i saw this, then i realized it would make a great gadd-type title for a song
@julianisdope I wouldn't say Travis is overrated, for modern drummers, he's one of the best. I think some people have been saying that some of the stuff Gadd plays isn't too hard, and maybe it isn't to some people, but a lot of fills are based off, if not directly imitate, Gadd's creativity. Barker plays some unique grooves you just don't hear now as well as adding in Gadd fills, he's not just some flunky who picked up sticks and went fuck yeah!
Julianisdope, and I'd say you're one informed 15-year old. There's no question in my mind and any other drummer worth his "weight in drumsticks" that you can not go wrong studying the old masters on drums. Steve started at 3 yrs old. If you read articles about his uncanny ability to play precisely what a song need,stay right deep in the pocket and still have others able to distinguish when it him playing, is nothing short of amazing. Watch his "Close Up" and "In Session" videos on Google videos.
I wouldnt say he's nothing and I dont think Gadd would say that either. I have been influenced by many drummers in my life. I have taken little ideas from almost every drummer I have ever heard and that includes local guys. Everyone is different. Find out what you can say on the instrument and listen to as much music as you can without being judgemental and you will become a better player for it. Isn't that the goal for all of us.
that was so funny and sacrcstic i literly laughed and im not being sarcastic. isee alotta guys do solos and i tire after 90 sec. i thought that was a cool bit
No thanks, I have other things to do. If it makes you feel any better, I checked out your vids after posting my previous comment and I think you're.. pretty good. Certainly have potential, but just be careful you practice things correctly.
@wolloolloo Why all the hate and bad comments? Please give respect where respect is due, because trying to say "no disrespect but...", and then trying to say Gadd's playing is slow and thus irrelevant to you because everything should be mind numbingly fast makes you into an ass. Music isn't and never will be about being the fastest player, anyone can be fast. Go buy a metronome and bring it back to slow. If you say you have one you're using it wrong.
@JaskaJunior Your wrong in a way...THose are not the masters although in my top 10 list, except peart, hes over rated also. But where jojo mayer? hes up there, also dennis chambers? theres a few more I could name. Can't make a list and put people at the top, theres many many "masters"
I think you're wrong - it is increadibly difficult. The difficulty is not in the sticking - millions of drummers could play 95% of the stuff Gadd plays... but it wouldn't sound like it does when he plays it. Thats where the real skill is, and thats why he gets the biggest gigs in the world and we dont...
hes stunning.. everything is so simple for him and amazing for the rest of us mere mortals.
Steve thanks for being so humble on the DVD and thus setting such a great example for all drummers out there. We love how technical some of your grooves are, they raise the bar to better music and challenge all worthy drummers. Rock on! Peace, and Music - - FreeTIm

one of my all time favorite grooves to play
Incredible, this man is simply amazing. He's like the perfect imitation of nature's grooves.
classic....artist, thank you...i'm always left speechless after watching a master at there craft. cheers
no drummer has more feel and passion than steve gadd you fool!
....DANG!!! ...LOVE his groove and creativity, and I'm a ham-fisted guitar hack!
That is really ingenious. I'd never immagined that was how that groove is played!
Saw him at a clinic. what an awesome clinic that was
it's not about being able to play it....it's about being able to come up with it, hes a genius!
effortless talent -perfection
Damn... This guy's incredible
lovely sound.
Absolutely genius
Man, Steve Gadd.
He´s amazing!
In the beginning the earth was without sound, and void; and deafness was

Awesome bro! You sound like a really cool guy!
Great groove!
Freakin' delicately badass mesermizing playability
Steve GOD.
awesome
It's not difficult it's just awesome! ;-)
wow!
thanks :)
i really like hearing him on those open sounding ringy toms and ringy snare. it's very ringy.
so true
@samsoft9390 I think the first sticking pattern is actually the same as the most common latin rythm which is TOGETHER RLRR LRLR RLRR LR
No problem. I'm glad to help. I just hope it made sense enough to help you. Just start slow & be patient with yourself & before u know it you'll be playing it like Gadd around the kit.
1:58 that is so sick!!!!
Oh my Gadd...
Thank you for the input drewper73. Much appreciated !
GADD... DRUMMING GOD
@wolloolloo It's not just about how ahrd the song is to play, imagine how creative you've gotta be to come up with a groove like this, and play it with such awesome feel :)
I just had my mind fucking blown...
woah

+InsertName130 the secret is sprinkling his balls with talcum powder before every performance
josshlegg I KNEW IT!
Talcum powder on the balls! That's like magic pixie dust!
SakDaddy

His drums sound good yes but make no mistake about it, it his groove, his time, use of space etc.
@drummerkingmike Bingo. Gadd's a god.
forte
Make sure to check out jeff porcaro for another studio great, as well as vinnie colaiuta for an all around legend.
Listen to some of the music he played on.. steely dan - aja Listen to it now! and then judge
@Forsythe0 Well spoken!
holy Lord
Holy Drumming..
@fbskier20 right on
@themoaspecial because for such a long time no one knew wtf he was doing and it would drive you crazy trying to figure it out
where is the fill in the opening/closing hudson promo from? ive always wondered
does anyone have the sheet notation to this?
@drummerkingmike
I agree completely.
@tcslick420 Yup, you got it. Not what, but how!
@drummerkingmike That's the truth!!!
Mr. Precision.
@doublethumpbass89 HAHAHA, genious, so true!
Play like Gadd? Haha,thanks for the encouragement. Yes, starting off slow is the key as I am still a beginner.
wow...that was brilliant...i still could not figure out the sticking...can anyone help ?
four thumbs up
what the hell kind of statement is that. if ANY drummer has feel and passion, it's Gadd! Al Di Meola - Casino
how can something so simple be played so elegantly. perhaps a touch of genius helps.............
any 1 got sthe sticking?
👍
@andyauyong well i think the thing is that any intermediate drummer can pick up a pairs of sticks and sound like travis barker with steve its not what he plays its how he plays it and i bet no one can sound like steve gadd also "simplicity is not stupidity"
no way you said that... NO drummer has more feel and passion than Mr. Gadd!
why the fuck i can't watch a drum video without seeing travis barker everywhere??? XD
@doublethumpbass89 travis barker is a good drummer. remember that. But he would agree that there is only one Gadd..the greatest.
@PositivelyBored Ha. Nice name.
Maybe you should go watch a video of Mike Mangini going as fast as he possibly can around his drumset. Boy wouldn't that be exciting!
@The4thGuy Works every time...
SylarTheBest has it right, but if it made it easier for you, you could insert a L after the very first R. Then the sticking would be like this, where each R or L is a 16th note:

@doublethumpbass89 lmao, cheers
or, just simply
R RLRRLRLRRLRRLL
@joeglimmix
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
i was almost expecting Zep too when i saw this, then i realized it would make a great gadd-type title for a song

hahaha throughout the whole video i was like "this is actually kinda lame..." then he put it all together at the end and all was well
@TheDice2008 Well, that's not entirely true, he's pretty good at punk drumming... but that's about it.
Julianisdope, and I'd say you're one informed 15-year old. LOL, I'm so sorry no one gets your joke... I burst out laughing. Too many negative votes LOL. On another note, this groove is INSANELY good.
Thats the opposite of the truth in my opinion. In my eyes Gadd has the most passion and feel of any drummer i have ever heard.
0:00 - 0:02 Dream Theater - As I am.
Travis who?
I wouldnt say he's nothing and I dont think Gadd would say that either. I have been influenced by many drummers in my life. nossa um baterista que nunca ouviu esse cara não sabe oque é ser ou tentar seu um baterista
that was so funny and sacrcstic i literly laughed and im not being sarcastic. isee alotta guys do solos and i tire after 90 sec. i thought that was a cool bit
Exactly!!...... 'sept if you put another drummer in that place it would be easier to rob their music off Napster =D
You ca't compare steve gadd and travis barker .. they are completely different!
No thanks, I have other things to do. If it makes you feel any better, I checked out your vids after posting my previous comment and I think you're.. pretty good. Certainly have potential, but just be careful you practice things correctly.

Who's Travis Barker? It seems that every video on RUclips concerning drums is infiltrated by "Travis Barker Fans."
you'll need to travis pretty far if your going to barker that travis is good
HA! Can't play that with traditional grip huh? :p
unbelievably good rhythmic Man eh? Plays with Steely Dan? GD.
@JaskaJunior Your wrong in a way...THose are not the masters although in my top 10 list, except peart, hes over rated also. But where jojo mayer? hes up there, also dennis chambers? theres a few more I could name. Can't make a list and put people at the top, theres many many "masters"

@soundmind529 If you could drum you wouldn't have responded.
