Virtuoso drummer here fellow drummers. Steve's approach is playing rudiments over the entire drum kit. His playing is so musical, thanks for all the killer drumming you've created, love you Steve!!!!
So glad I met him and still have his autograph he signed, my ted reed book! Greatest most humble and engaging almost shy in a very nice way!!! Love all your work on all 600 recording sessions you've done!!!
"reeeeeeee other drummers can play 10 times faster reeee!!!!111" It's not about speed, kids, otherwise my washing machine would be raking in music awards. Gadd is God. Simple.
He’s still doing the same patterns and moves - a man who found his thing and committed to it 100%, no doubts, never tentative - if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Still I remember I watched this video specifically in non android mobile with low quality and still I learnt this beat was priceless feeling it was..... Legend......
the amazing gadd feel we all love :) not that tough sticking tho: S=both hands (flam-like) SRLRRLRLRRLRRLR of course the accents and bass displacement are really tough..especially with that loose feel
I was told this: Gadd got a sheet - some band he was playing. And somehow it did not sound right. There was a quarter of a note wrong in the sheet and Gadd played it like that. He fixed it and came to the groove. What a drummer
it's a left hand flam, and also, the second and the last note that plays the left hand -in this pattern- have accents. Notice that there's also a slight variation on how he hits the cowbell.
so dynamic , so melodic.....you can sing what hes playing!! thats why it works ....who needs other instruments when the complete melody is being played here....not a pattern but a rhythm song....this is what conga players and djembe players know....try to play these forms on the drums...not patterns.....not as a final goal anyway....music out of technique....Gadd is a master at this!!! RESPECT...RESPECT..... hey, thanks for posting this
makes me look at the drums differently and not to worry just play in the future and be happy with my instincts better go and jump on the throne problem is I need a big smoke ist then sweat then if lucky I might be in the zone it dosnt always happen but Im more inspired with my personal progress when I watch the gods share a part of themselves good stuff and thankyou steve gadd
Steve Gadd based his groove on the Mozambique in the hit Paul Simon song "Late In The Evening." Without his drumming in that song, I don't think it would be known as a "legendary" song. The other Gadd groove I was referring to is "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover," also by Paul Simon.
It's the same pattern all the way thru, from the hi-hat in the beginning to the snare/hi-hat playing at the end. Simplified it is - rL RLRRLRLRRLRRLR. Then just repeat(rL stands for flam of course). Or am I misunderstanding your question?
Every one of you jokers who dissed this performance are showing your immaturity and ignorance. Its not just what he plays, but how he plays it and it feels. Sure there are a lot of fast complicated drummers out there with all kinds of chops, but they don't groove like this cat.
Anyone who can't feel the groove or respect it isn't a real drummer, I'm 50 now and just played drums as a hobby, never was serious about it never had any formal training either, Never got really fast or anywhere near the talent in so many drummers alive and passed. I played everything from southern Gospel to Slayer and Pantera etc. At the time I never disrespected the drummers from the music genres. Somehow during this time I acquired a funk, didn't even know I had it really it was just me and how I felt the music. I was told by one of my peers that the reason they kept me in their band even tho others were wanting to be in the band and they were far better drummers than me, they told me no one has a funk like you man. They just loved it. I didn't feel it was anything special but others better than me did, so yes Groove and funk is very important in drums. I'm actually just getting acquainted with Mr Gadd. I love his grooves.
@drex48239 On a single drum, it's a flam ( both hands at the same time awkwardly cancel each other out). One different drums, one should try to get both hits more or less simultaneously.
@BEOWULF282 dude u got it rite, and koodos to u for that. but if u listen carefully at the beginning, there is actually a rest between the both hands and the first right sticking. its a crucial componenet of the drum beat to have the eight note rest. so it would look like this. |B RLRRLR|LRRLRRLR||
sometimes he does a flam...other times he doesnt...depends on drums hes hitting. i love when he does a bass-floor tom flam-very tough to incorporate smoothly
when he first starts demonstrating the lick the first time on the hi hat his facial expression is hilarious. its as if he is saying "for the last freaking time for all of you morons who haven't bought my dvd that explains it"
just sing a long.....youll internalize and then eventually it will come in some form as you establish some sticking here.....if you can sing what you play .....u got a shot.......love it...
Every second of every video of Steve Gadd is a priceless lesson on how to make the drums sing!
So true.
So true! I want to be just like him when I grow up. ❤
I always come back here!!!!
Been doing it for about 8 years now.. Love this!!!!
This nice man seems to be getting the hang of drumming. He really should consider a career in music ............
😂 He’s a natural!
Of course you said that with your tongue all rolled up on your cheek!!!!!!
Hes the bus driver in Rosebud
😂 Ха
I would listen to him play the phone book.
Gadd is the main man.
Thank you for giving me ears to hear him and eyes to see him.
How does he do it? What a gift! I never get tired of watching Gadd work his magic.
A master of technique, groove, style, creativity and great ear for music. the complete package
Virtuoso drummer here fellow drummers. Steve's approach is playing rudiments over the entire drum kit. His playing is so musical, thanks for all the killer drumming you've created, love you Steve!!!!
The Rhythm-o-cratic Oath : I swear to play the whole groove and nothing but the groove,...so help me Gadd!!
So glad I met him and still have his autograph he signed, my ted reed book! Greatest most humble and engaging almost shy in a very nice way!!! Love all your work on all 600 recording sessions you've done!!!
Touch, feel, musicality and pure groove! That's why he is a master!!
Gadd has a few benchmark grooves that he's gotten lots of mileage
and this one is one of them.
Taikomaniac agree..same samba based stuff every time..played impeccably although has to be said
If you ask James Taylor who the smoothest drummer is, he will tell you Steve Gadd. He is a legend for a reason.
Watching from Mozambique 🇲🇿
I bet gadd would be welcomed warmly 😊
Steve Gadd is the drummer playing with most L.O.V.E.
listening to this, I can type faster and work happier.
thanks for the post tomgadd.
"reeeeeeee other drummers can play 10 times faster reeee!!!!111"
It's not about speed, kids, otherwise my washing machine would be raking in music awards.
Gadd is God. Simple.
So what? Fast ain’t the point, junior.
Simple is the wrong word. This not simple at all. 8 from 10 would be lose if he would start playing Mozambique/samba on fire mode 140bpm🔥
@@butuh13 that’s what he said
steve gadd was one of buddy's favourite drummers, high praise indeed
Who ever tries to emulate Steve Gadd good luck! He's one of a kind obviously!!!
A great musician that has chosen drums to express himself!
i will never, ever, ever get tired of listening to this! hot stuff!
He’s still doing the same patterns and moves - a man who found his thing and committed to it 100%, no doubts, never tentative - if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

One of the most important Grooves in the history of drumming.
the amazing gadd feel we all love :)
not that tough sticking tho: S=both hands (flam-like)
SRLRRLRLRRLRRLR of course the accents and bass displacement are really tough..especially with that loose feel
Oooo when he goes back in at 3:42 just so good. Unreal musician
Gadd is amazing. No matter the style he has a groove for it
Witnessing Steve's talent is second to gazing upon the face of God. "Play skillfully..." Psalm 33.
Beautiful! Groovy and powerful yet relaxed and light
A Master at work
No doubt!
Yuppa!!! Mr. Gadd showin' ya how it's done! : )
I was told this: Gadd got a sheet - some band he was playing. And somehow it did not sound right. There was a quarter of a note wrong in the sheet and Gadd played it like that. He fixed it and came to the groove. What a drummer
I love it. I'm just learning how to play this, and I'm not gonna lie it's pretty hard. What sticks is he using?
amazing i am still trying to master this groove
steve gadd is so damn good. hes real technichal but he also has great feel to his beats, and dont get me started on his dynamics
Steve is the inspiration, just learned the basic version of this groove.
it's a left hand flam, and also, the second and the last note that plays the left hand -in this pattern- have accents. Notice that there's also a slight variation on how he hits the cowbell.

I THINK YOU SAID IT BEST, AND I GUESS IT'S A GOOD LESSON FOR ALL OF US, VERY INSIGHTFUL
this is the groove he played with dave weckl, and vinnie colaiuta!!! i was dying to learn it!!!! steve gadd owns !!
@Kane.. Who do u think inspired Weckl? If u like Weckl. You have to love Gadd
nah man 30seconds of this was enough for me. it just got hell boring.
His groove is magical!
Sounds like a drum corp version of Cuba percussion....brilliantly executed of course. 😮
Omg, like when he just suddenly went fast I was like 😮😮😮 2:12
nice video
i always learn lots with him.
tkx
God Damn what a gift! The man is a metronome...
Thank you for posting this. I need to study and repeat it in practice now.
afro caribbean rhythm from Cuba and good lesson with Steve Gadd style!
Groove master
Is that groove that he plays from 3:42-3:56from a song? I love it!
makes me look at the drums differently and not to worry just play in the future and be happy with my instincts better go and jump on the throne problem is I need a big smoke ist then sweat then if lucky I might be in the zone it dosnt always happen but Im more inspired with my personal progress when I watch the gods share a part of themselves good stuff and thankyou steve gadd
Changed my life
Never gets old....
Steve Gadd is king!
F = Left Flam
R = Right
L = Left
l = Left ghost note

Late in the Evening was on One Trick Pony released in 1980.
I've been looking for an explanation on this beat. My favorite part is at 3:52!
"There... that outa hold ya for a while" Gadd doesn't skimp when answering your question.
Good Gadd man!
It's the same pattern all the way thru, from the hi-hat in the beginning to the snare/hi-hat playing at the end. Simplified it is -
rL RLRRLRLRRLRRLR. Then just repeat(rL stands for flam of course). Or am I misunderstanding your question?
Love this!
When he switches to the cow bell he changes the sticking..
He actually plays on the 3 with his RH on the CB.
Tell me if you don't agree
Every one of you jokers who dissed this performance are showing your immaturity and ignorance. Its not just what he plays, but how he plays it and it feels. Sure there are a lot of fast complicated drummers out there with all kinds of chops, but they don't groove like this cat.
Pepe Lepeaux AMEN!
Who the actual hell is dissing Steve Gadd that's just plain ignorance.
Anyone who can't feel the groove or respect it isn't a real drummer, I'm 50 now and just played drums as a hobby, never was serious about it never had any formal training either, Never got really fast or anywhere near the talent in so many drummers alive and passed. Welcome to the Internet. And I'm sorry you thought that this comment would really change any one's mind
They don't know what or who they're watching and listening to. They're just a bunch of Justin Bieber fans.
The daddy, most musical drummer out there still...
Anyone dissing on this just remember Steve has more groove and feel in his pinky toe than all of you combined
He is ¡¡¡¡ THE MASTER ¡¡¡¡
its based on a mozambique!
Drumming sincerity at it's best
Mellifluous.
I can't imagine him playing with anything other than his black signature sticks TRADITIONAL grip.
I love to dance to Mozambique when it's played at a drum circle.
best drummer in the world. full stop.
Dr. Gregory House best drummer of all time!!
THE BEST ONE EVER
Isn't it something else that the two most famous Steve Gadd beats are both on Paul Simon songs? Add to that, both songs were hits.
Gadd is such a tease. He makes you wait and wait, but in the end the payoff comes and he gives you what you wanted
Isn't this from the video "Zildjian-A day in New York"???
@drex48239 On a single drum, it's a flam ( both hands at the same time awkwardly cancel each other out). One different drums, one should try to get both hits more or less simultaneously.
@pulgabros meniel has some nice sounding cowbells
it was late in the evenning . . and he blew that room away!
@BEOWULF282 dude u got it rite, and koodos to u for that. but if u listen carefully at the beginning, there is actually a rest between the both hands and the first right sticking. its a crucial componenet of the drum beat to have the eight note rest. so it would look like this.

I JUST LOVE ALL THESE COMMENTS.
master of masters
I watched Buddy Rich doing West Side Story the other day.
I mean a video....
Man!!!!!!
sometimes he does a flam...other times he doesnt...depends on drums hes hitting. i love when he does a bass-floor tom flam-very tough to incorporate smoothly
Like poetry in motion.
when he first starts demonstrating the lick the first time on the hi hat his facial expression is hilarious. its as if he is saying "for the last freaking time for all of you morons who haven't bought my dvd that explains it"
I'm just guessing at random here, but it MIGHT be "dream come true" by the brand new heavies ;)
does anyone know the sticking pattern from when he first moves on to the cowbell?
1 des meilleurs à la batterie
just sing a long.....youll internalize and then eventually it will come in some form as you establish some sticking here.....if you can sing what you play .....u got a shot.......love it...
Does anybody out there know where I can get a nice bright sounding cowbell like this? So far nobody is making them like this anymore.
i want to learn this so badddddd
@BEOWULF282 Nailed the pattern, thanks!
exelente¡
I’ve been trying to hard to find a transcription of his version of this beat
Transcribe it yourself, one hand at time and in small sections
anyone got the sticking for this? (the beginning part at least) i'm trying to pick it up but i just can't seem too... :(
Master 🔥
the snare is supraphonic 5x14??
Great!!!
its not a flam but both!! i need to do it on music lessons!
