To reply to your question at the end, it's very rare for a Black Metal band to become famous, since only Black Metal fans will listen to it.
You can imagine Black Metal drummers are pretty rare gems. In fact, it's not unsual for a drummer to be in more than one band (for instance, visit Nils' Metallum page, and have a look at the bands he's currently playing for and the ones he played for in the past).
I can't realy tell whether they "last" long or not, but if they're good, they sure are wanted by bands. Thus, they are pretty active in the scene.
Also, It's a very sperimental genre, so they might find more satisfying, artistically speaking, playing slightly different types of Black metal and whatnot with more than a single band.
I'm not a native speaker so hope everything is clear.

Nils here replaced Frost, who is a constant member of both 1349 and Satyricon. They are very unlike each other - Nils being an insane speed machine, while Frost, despite also being capable at blasting at great speeds, usually goes for a more creative approach to drumming, like slowing things down and bringing interesting fills in moderate speeds - so his playing is not all high-speed blasts and high-speed fills in between different blasts. Both are fantastic at what they do!

Black Metal are supose to be raw, early black metal was recording in garage with the most less expansive camera you can find. Today, Black Metal have expand alot as a genre, you have still that standard raw black metal, but you also have Atmospheric Black Metal, Progressive Black Metal and Pagan Black Metal the list can be longer. Asagraum are very few black metal bands with only female members.

My band used to have our rehearsal space in the same house as In Battle had their rehearsal space/demo studio when Nils was playing with them. There was a lot of crazy parties in that house. Probably 4-5 bands in there every night and partying there during the weekends, having jam sessions switching around members of bands and playing other genres of music and just being silly. Awesome times and really cool to have had the privilege to just casually jam with musicians at that level.
I hung out with the singer and the lead guitarist of In Battle at the time and when they got back from Florida after recording the album Welcome to the battlefield, i was in there watching them rehearse for their upcoming tour for that album quite a lot. Watching Nils play up close is like watching some sort of supernatural force. It’s mind boggling. But I have to say though, I’ve never seen him play as sloppy as he does in this video.. For him, this isn’t very good at all. He can do much better.

Thank you for featuring Nils once again. To me he's the greatest drummer in this extreme gender, he's truly unique with the volume he can gets through his tom fills endurance (check godhate drum cam with dark funeral ) and he also plays "old school", I mean, no push pull, no heel toe, each time I see him playing live or on cam I'm still impressed after all these years of extreme death/black fan being. Check out his work with Nordjevel and also the live performances with Myrkskog - a poignant scenario of horror for example. Above that, he's a nice an humble person, every other drummers seems so light regarding Nils, the main difference is the "intention" he puts into drumming, he also played 10 years with 2B sticks, which is also unbelievable at these high tempos...

Pete Sandoval, formerly of Morbid Angel and current Terrorizer, said in an interview many years ago that he was already starting to struggle with the fastest songs, that was back when he was in MA, he was in his early 40s so yeah, these kinda drummers burn fast but boy they burn bright. One of the things I have noticed is that as time passes by, they stop hitting so freaking hard, so they can still move fast enough to keep up the tempo without much physical wear. Usually these kinda drummers also train their bodies to endure this, see guys like Krimh, Peter Wildoer, Eloy Casagrande, etc, they all do gym and eat healthy to maintain and improve their level, they are athletes, and they are set to push the boundaries of extreme music... of course there are odd cases, like Nick Barker, how he plays that fast is beyond my comprehension.

Hello Mr.Rooney , A new subscriber here. I may catch a lot of shit for this comment but whatever. I'm a 55 yr. Old disabled drummer. I played from about the ages of 15 to 42 . While I am not a death metal drummer or a Mike Mangini , I do think I have enough experience to say, that while this drumming is incredible to watch and if you understand what it takes to be a good player, then you know that it takes an unbelievable amount of practice , dedication, perseverance and ya da ya da to play at this level 👏. When I was younger I always looked up to these drummer and I always wanted chops like this. Now , things have changed and while I still can appreciate their playing, I find the music soulless, un melodic, droning and it gives me a headache after a while. To me it seems like it's just a competition to see who can go the fastest . I'm not an angry Godless person so I can't relate on a lyrical level either. I think it's good for young drummers to keep up their chops and if they like it what can I say. Some people like Mexican cowboy polka music. To each their own.

You should check out Hellhammer. It's kinda difficult to find a proper drum cam of him, but after this video ... I guess I can send you a link. He's just as fast as Dominator, probably faster, but he has an interesting and jazzing way of playing, much more interesting I think.

I wish I could enjoy black metal but for the most part it is one of the hardest sub genres of metal for me to get into, something about black metal singers doesn’t mesh with me, I hate this because their musicians are always pretty good, or if youre dominator you’re legit one of the greatest. I would kill to see him and other black metal artist venture into other genres of metal

If you like this kind of stuff, you should check out Jamie St Merat of Ulcerate. For example, Dead Oceans live footage. He's just as fast but has more nuanced playing style. I'm surprisingly not a fan of their music, I find it pretty boring to be honest, but Jamie has me coming back to watch his drumming, he's incredibly skilled.
