Darkside is definitely not the fastest drummer. I don't think he wants to be either. But he always plays relaxed, focused with great patterns on the cymbals.
That backbeat during the chorus always makes me goosebumps. Darkside is a cymbal magician. Also his drumming creating huge tension from the beggining of the song, love it! About the masks. As it was stated by Mgła's frontman: "One of key approaches within Mgła is removal of aspects that we consider unnecessary. In this case, it is ourselves as individuals. The use of masks is an attempt to get rid of the rock n’ roll heritage of musicians being “idols” or “heroes”. Instead, Mgła live is an unit, where “who does what” is of little relevance.”

It's so cool how he finds a way to fill every little space with something. Keeping the back beat consistent through all those paradiddle inversions is crazy as hell too. Big respect to such a unique approach to black metal drumming.
In several live concerts that guy literally never missed. Even in the other band he plays in Kriegsmaschine he literally does not miss. He's a great talent and I'm proud as a black metal fan that he's doing something different than blast beats.
Hi.. Song is called Exercises in Futility V (as five). Brutal Assault is a festival in Czech Republic. I was on this particular show. Imagine crowd of 20 000 people watching the podium, not making a single sound, not dancing, moshing or anything just watching and listening. I had to move to the exit by the last minute of this song and after the whole show (about 1 hour) i noticed how eerie the atmosphere on the concert really was.

Ive probably spun this album a thousand times by now, but Ive personally never had the chance to see them live, nor have I watched them play in a video til today. To me its super cool to see him chain the cymbal hits together that quickly and intricately by being comfortable enough to swap hands for snare hits. I love how that cymbal play really just grabs me and pulls me along during the relentless grind that is this album.
I've heard that Darkside was initially a xylophone player. I don't know if that explains anything about his skillset or the way he holds the sticks. He's certainly one of the most talented drummers in black metal.
Going to do my duty and agree. It wouldn't be RUclips without someone else putting their opinion in the comment so here it is: If Jamie Saint Merat is behind the kit, you're in for a treat that incorporates few blast beat(s).
I'm gonna throw this out there. This music is so huge, epic, with such space and emotion and personal focus, I want to write a "musical" with this type of music. Not a typical happy musical, not a campy funny "scary" musical but one that deals with real themes of darkness, hopelessness, betrayal, war. I listened to a lot of music on deployment from a portable cd player. Lamb of God was the music of my time spent in Fallujah, and this music speaks lyrically and musically in a way no other form can touch. If someone can put one together, send me venue info. I'm there.
It might look like hes gripping high on the stick because he's using longer sticks. A lot of death and black metal drummers use heavier, longer sticks as they have more momentum for things like blasts. Lets you relax a bit more while you're playing as counter-intuitive as it sounds.
This band is somewhat of an anomaly. As far as the drummer, Darkside is the absolute epitome of proper stance and technique when he plays. His balance and solid presence is second to none. As far as his playing he is the most tasteful black metal drummer I have ever heard. He is apart of the band and does only what the SONG calls for which is very hard to find in a genre built on the "LOOK AT ME LOOK AT LOOK AT ME! LOOK HOW FAST I CAN PLAY!! style of music. Sometimes you need to chill and play the song. Not to mention the 2 finger salute to the crowd after finishing. Such a humble guy.
Perhaps a bit too late but a few Polish bands wear face-coverings to remain anonymous while performing songs regarding certain topics. Black metal is inherently a controversial genre and seeks to talk about the unspeakable. MGLA's nihilistic (truly anti-nihilistic) and misanthropic messages are in throws with the Polish Catholic government which has attempted to persecute bands such as Behemoth and the Polish MSM has attempted to shut down venues of bands such as Marduk (falsely believed to be Nationalist Socialist because of creating songs regarding the German side of the Second World War). Mgla is probably one of the most universally respected modern black metal bands. Incredible musicianship (which is not something I think most people associate with black metal, but actually is somewhat of a staple particularly with drumming. IE Frost ). Black metal has now become so much more of a serious musical genre rather than an outlet for pure rage against religious oppression and high fidelity metal that it was originally (the old black metal aesthetic was extremely lo fi production and extremely raw. angry, anti religion lyrical themes). And we have so many great black metal bands now that still keep some of the old aesthetic (dressing in all black, corpse paint, anti religion, satanism etc) but also have great production and incredible musicianship. Mgla's albums are divided up into chapters like a book. (Groza, With Hearts Toward None, Exercises in Futility and the new album, Age of Excuse). The song you reacted to was Chapter 5 so to speak. The band is actually just two people. Vocalist/multi instrumentalist M and Drummer Darkside. The rest of the live band are guest musicians (since M can't play everything). Their name means "Fog" in Polish.
Please do anything by Lord Marco! If you're really digging the technical metal drums, he has his own RUclips channel. I recommend: Hunhau Mitnal- "Creador y Formador". He does it blind folded with no triggers
Seen them live twice and it was absolute pure bliss every time. Someone in the comments mentioned trigger to play at these speeds? I knew the organizer of the festival they played at and NONE of the bands used triggers. It sounds just like that with only stage microphones. Furthermore, this song is great for what it is but Darkside gets really good when he shifts to blastbeats, which are absent during this track. Finally, sure it is generic 4x4 blackmetal and that's what they chose to play. It is boring for some but others love it to death; and Darkside masters and plays that style like a God. Can he play different styles and other time signatures? I would not doubt it, but he enjoys playing this stuff and he does it amazingly well. A true gift to the blackmetal scene.

I like your vibe and your unbiased criticism mr Rooney. Happy to suscribe and see what's gonna pop up next mate. great job!
