@@AndrewRooneyDrums Also wanted to mention (i'm new to your channel so I am assuming you are new to extreme metal) black and death metal gigs range from 25 to 45 minuets give or take. Luckily they don’t play 2 or 3 hour gigs. An extreme metal (thrash, death or black metal - black is what Dark Funeral play) gig typically runs between 30 and 45 minutes for support bands and 60-90 minutes for headliners. When I saw Dark Funeral live a few years ago, they played a 70 minute set. Not super long, but when you’re playing at that speed night after night for weeks or months at a time.. completely insane. Like you said, it must take a massive toll on joins and tendons playing that intensely for so many hours a week.
I saw them a few times live but one of those the lead singer was sick. A big cold. Instead of canceling he simply took a litre of vodka on stage and drank as they played. Not the best concert from them but yeah they are crazy.
You can't play at those speeds without good technique. If you had bad technique that would lead to injuries, then you wouldn't be able to be a drummer for as long as Nils has been doing it...let alone play as fast as him.
Well, he has been playing like that - or trying to, at least - for more than 20 years now. With Dark Funeral for a decade. And he continues to this day. So he must be doing something right.
Duration of a usual set is usually 1-1.5 hours, but the frequency can be playing a show every night for over a month with no break depending on tour demands. Most extreme bands like to tour and play all over the world, night after night, only taking breaks when the world forces them to via plagues.
If you haven’t already, and I know, this is an old video, you need to look up the driver that’s playing for them now!! I don’t know how they can find drummers this talent level. It’s effing mind-boggling to me. LoL

Go see some metal shows. People are super friendly. The musicianship is sometimes mind-blowing concidering it's mostly untrained people with a passion for music
@@AndrewRooneyDrums There's another Black Metal drummer named Jan Axel Blomberg or "Hellhammer", who's considered to be the best in the genre. He's worked with tons of bands and he's very talented, but he's primarily known for being the drummer of Mayhem. He style is almost jazz-like especially his slower, more technical stuff with bands like Winds.
the short answer is "they don't avoid injuries" , it's literally like being an athlete. Proper recovery/rest/training is required. For me, I worry most about my knees...
if you want stick height AND blast beats, look no further than hannes grossman - vortex omnivium cam for example. that being said... physics also apply to drums, so longer way (i.e. stick height or beater swing), the less time you have for each individual hit, wich makes it harder especially at fast tempos, hence "economy of motion" for a lot of fast folks, especially for longer runs to conserve stamina. bu you have some mad lads who still beat the shit outta their drums at ludicrious speed in metal. some have surgical precisions which makes it look like just another day at the office for them. Menthor from Nightbringer or Simon Schilling also come to mind. Also Stocki form Cytotoxin, he likes th throw in some triplets or odd-time or off- grooves or other rudiments to spice things up instead of just singles like Nils here.
Shame you can't hear the rest of the band but I guess it's about the drums. If you've got the stomach for it (the official video has depictions of suicide), check out "My Funeral". The live versions I've found don't have the greatest sound unfortunately.

Einfach nur geil. Maschine
Yes Robert!
You'd think that the footage is sped up but then you look at the rest of the band on the stage and see they move in normal speed.
Reacting to Nils drumming...is like reacting to Jinjer for the first time. :D The reaction is just awe and disbelief.... :D
Nice!
If you like black metal, there was this beast of a drummer: Altar ZK6 of the bands Crystalium/Arkhon Infaustus. Guy is a machine gun
I saw Nils playing when he was only 18 yrs old. I told him he will have a bright future. I met him like 15yrs later with Thomas Haake of Meshuggah so I was right..
when he goes onto the toms he changes his technique to use different muscles. he said so it looks like hes doing more stuff, but its actually giving him a small break.
They probably gig nightly. Most people can't handle the energy of metal heads, we're too spastic and fun loving, but if they hung around, they would see this happens by itself
I dig it Jonathan 🤘
Go see some metal shows. People are super friendly. The musicianship is sometimes mind-blowing concidering it's mostly untrained people with a passion for music
hes not just fast, he's very creative too.
Yup!
On tours, Dark Funeral are gigging like every or every second night for up to an hour
CRAZY Mantus!
Dominator is from another world... pure speed demon the best !
there is no "less dominate hand" when it comes to nils
HAHA! True story!
Me: Nils, which hand is your dominant hand?
Nils: yes.
Único! Extremo! Devastador!
Someone said "Those drums need a cigarette after this performance". 100%
Nils is one of my favs. Crazy fast and good technique. Btw nice hoodie
Gracias!
Listen to that double pedal. It's out of this world.
Seems like he’s ready for Mgla one of the best drumming videos I’ve ever seen
On the way!
Andrew Rooney Drums happy listening m8 👍🏻👍🏻
I saw Dark Funeral on concert with another band. Their set was only about 45 minutes.
Wish, I'm able to see them live one day!^^
Still. That'd require some serious stamina!
Exactly my question. How do they avoid injuries. Forget the tendons. Even the back. A lot of drummers get back surgeries.
the short answer is "they don't avoid injuries" , it's literally like being an athlete.
Yo thanks for the tip!
Nil's cardio must be insane.
Shame you can't hear the rest of the band but I guess it's about the drums.
If you've got the stomach for it (the official video has depictions of suicide), check out "My Funeral". The live versions I've found don't have the greatest sound unfortunately.
Beastmode! Hoffe can those extreme drummers remember what they have to Hit?
This dude hits the drums like I hit my meat every hour or so when I was like 14 or 15 and found out I was a righty.
Immediate Attack and Annihilation. But extremely clean strikes and placement of his sticks..
