HINT: soaking the bleached shirt in hydrogen peroxide will stop the bleach. Keeping the shirt dry as possible before bleaching with keep the design crisper. A wet shirt allows the bleach to spread, making the design less define.
At the restaurant where I work, many of us like to wear the red version of our uniform shirt on Fridays. Steven, the kindest elder you'd ever meet, accidentally spilled bleach on his, creating an almost tie-dye effect, but he wore it just the same. Well, he passed away this last Monday. To honor him, we're all tie-dye bleaching our red shirts to wear on Fridays. Just finished soaking my red shirt in bleach, and it's currently in the wash as I type this, but I'm sure it will come out looking great.
As a hairstylist I have sooooo many black shirts with bleach marks ... I’m definitely going to try this! I may even try it on some old black spotted leggings!
Thank you so much for making this video! Every year at my school we do a class color and we all voted for light purple but got cruddy dark purple tshirts instead. I really hated the color and wanted to make it lighter in a cool way so I wanted to tie dye it with stuff around the house (I only had one day to do it) and it worked terrifically (even my parents were impressed with the results)! I got a lot of complements on my shirt that day and I'm no artist so it ment a lot! I actually liked wearing my shirt that day
Did this with a black long sleeve, dyed it just like that, washed it out, and didn't wash it, just set it up to dry. It was orange/black at first, and then I washed it once dry. Turned two different shades of grey but it happens to be my FAVORITE shirt now. About to give it another go myself.
Omg I just did this and I saw it before I put it in the wash and it’s literal perfection. Currently waiting for it to get out the wash. Thank you ❤ for the great tutorial
Thanks for the clear instructions! We added bobby pins to keep track of the parts we wanted to bleach. We started with some Halloween themed shirts from the dollar store so the black and orange was perfect.
Thank you for the tutorial. It helped me a lot. I didn't know to wet the shirt first and I did one and it didn't turn out so well. Going to try this way!
thanks! I'm trying a bleach dye (using Clorox gel toilet bowl cleaner with bleach!) on a dark blue shirt this weekend, and am probably neutralizing with 10 to 1 hydrogen peroxide (water to H2O2) solution. Will see how it goes, but I tested on a scrap of similar fabric, and it makes it kind of a cool, rust orange!
My friend did it and her shirt bleached to a gray color instead of orange. I wish I knew the answer, bleach is usually strong enough to affect dark fabric. Maybe try a test and don't dilute the bleach with water
If you dilute the bleach and don't leave it on long you should be fine, I have made a few, and my family has as well and no one got any holes, however I would feel terrible if my advice ruined a nice shirt. Practice on a stained shirt
Not to discredit the poster in this video but this project may be good for just a quick little project and that's it. If you want good results you have to put in the time and use the proper materials and bleach regardless of how diluted it is isn't one of them. It will not take long before the shirt starts coming a part after several washes. That is just the effect bleach has on colored fabrics. Rit dyes are junk as well as dyes used in store bought tie dying kits. That being said, do you ever wonder why quality tie dyes are rather spendy? Most people doing them have years of experimenting and honing their skillset to make the beautiful patterns you see. They use high quality dyes that are not cheap. But they are very vibrant and using the right process, they don't wash out. The fabric will wear out before the colors lose much of their vibrancy. Bottom line, use crap materials, get crap results. Again, I am not bashing the poster here.....this may be a great way to do a project that doesn't matter a lot or to cover an accident from bleach use.
I used to have a t-shirt shop back in the 90s. There was a thing called discharge ink, which basically bleached the color out of dark shirts as part of the ink. It was my understanding that it didn't work on all shirts because different types of dye might be used. And sometimes they would dye unpopular or experimental colors of shirts black, and sell them as black shirts. And when they did this, they used dyes that were bleach resistant, because they were cheaper. not sure if that's what happened to you, tho. Hope the info helps.
I had this same issue, so I grabbed another shirt thinking it was the fabric blend. Turned out, I was using regular bleach. When I grabbed a bottle of concentrated bleach it worked just like in the video. Hope this helps anyone looking to do this.

I tye dye at 3am when I’m board….. WHO HAS “HYDROGEN PEROXIDE” LAYING AROUND 😂

Thank you for this, so to be clear ONLY SOAK IT FOR 10 mins, literally soo much easier than 24 hour tie dye

How did it come out??
What a great tribute to a kind man, hope they all turn out!
@@xSouled Mine came out great, albeit less pronounced than I had hoped. I think I made my water/bleach solution too weak.
This is the sweetest and most wholesome thing I have read recently. Came to learn how to tie-dye a shirt and now leaving with a smile and watery eyes
What a heartfelt gesture of remembrance. ❤
I didn't have a squirt bottle, so I poked a hole in the cap of a plastic water bottle. Worked perfectly!
thanks for the tip! :]
Best thing about this video is the last bit where you showed how you got it grey-ish! So so informative!!

Whoa! I loved the extra bit about dying it blue in the end to mute the orange. It made it look SO COOL and moody. Thank you for sharing.
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for having a nice and clear tutorial!

I always just splatter old black shirts w/ bleach but i was wondering how to do the spiral design. Love how yours turned out with the blue
"washer machine" lol You're too cute!
AHHH first time ever making a bleached black shirt. thankyou for this vid. saved my butt.🙏💕
i have just done the exact same thing to a newish t shirt, i will do this method right now! ty
Thanks so much for this video, tried this using regular bleach and it did not work. Grabbed some concentrated bleach and it worked great.
Thank you for posting this! My shirt looks amazing and I somehow twisted it to look like a heart so it's even better than I expected!
Cool 😎

Great tutorial! I especially liked how the dye gave the subtle change! I can’t wait to try!

Hey, thanks so much for the video!! I have a business cleaning Airbnbs and ruin so many shirts!! Thanks for the opportunity to make them new again!!
Hi Susan, you are welcome, as an artist I feel like all my clothes are stained!! I feel your pain:)
Hi! Is this regular cleaning bleach or specific bleach for lightening fabric?
It’s the bleach you use in your house. Just bleach
Think I’m gonna do this to all my solid scrub tops-I work in dialysis and we use a lot of bleach for cleaning so solid stuff gets ruined.
thank you so much, it was very helpful :)
I'm going to do this with my nirvana shirt from walmart cause it's kinda plain
YES I was thinking about doing it to one of my band shirts 🥰
I'm doing slipknot
It helped me a lot for bleach my first black shirt, THANK YOU SO MUCH ✨
Nice! Wish you'd shown the back also.
Love it - why wet it first though?
I, too was "Dying to see how it turns out",,, well played
Just tried this on a blue tee shirt it made it white and blue tie dye, but I didn't do the alternating pattern thing. I just soaked it in bleach.
Is this process more useful with a spray bottle or a paintbrush
Ive only tried it with a squirt bottle
So beautiful. But I don’t understand your color
Any recommendations for a long rectangular piece of material?
So many possibilities! You could make multiple bullseyes or swirls
My shirt won't take the dye even after multiple washings and I'm feeling really disheartened. what causes this?
I love how it turned out. Where can I find the dye from?
I bought it at a grocery store
just used this to bleach a thrifted sweater i got, it came out super pretty!!
Do you rinse with cold water or is warm water ok? I live in AZ and our water tends to be Luke warm rather than cold
nalahs187 I did both warm and cold and it didn’t make a difference:) hope that helps! Good luck
@@MrOtterArtStudio thank you, my water here is Luke warm in the summer I was afraid that the warm water would make the color fade
Do you think this will work with like a graphic photo on it?
Yes but the effect It depends on how the image was printed
Mr. Otter Art Studio oh, the texture is kinda leather
marinette mari I don’t know what bleach would do do leather, if you don’t care too much about the shirt try it out!
I have messed up some shirts with bleach while cleaning
What about pants? With the break in the fabric, will the pattern still be awesome ?
I did try this with jeans and it looked okay but not great. I think the denim was too thick so the bleach didn’t bleed to the other side
The front of the jeans looked great but the back didn’t have much of a pattern
Thank so much for posting. Do you recommend washing with detergent or without?
You are welcome! I used detergent
Wait, do we need to have a stain of bleach to this? lol
Great video!! Thanks 🙏🏼
I accidentally ruined a nice black vans shirt with bleach so now i want to tie dye it.
Thank you so much for this!
It's a great idea 👍😀
Lovely
looks great
how would you suggest sectioning off sweatpants to do this ?
Maybe spiral on the upper third on one side and the lower third in the other
How to make a tie dyeing rubber bands
Does the bleach not eat the fabric?
It can if you leave it on for long enough. To bleach the fabric it only needs to stay on for minutes
Thank you but can i use white shirt
The bleach wouldn't work on a white shirt but if you use color dye instead of bleach you sure can
im using powdered bleach mixed with water and hoping for the best
idk if its gonna work
i think i messed up the pattern but oh well the shirt itself is already pretty messed up
How did it turn out? Ive never used powder bleach
@@MrOtterArtStudio it didnt work but it turned out it didnt have bleach in it lol
I bet you could ice-reverse-dye with powdered bleach. 🤔
would this ruin a decal that I have on a shirt?
It depends on what kind of decal, printed, embroidered, etc. It might, bleach is pretty powerful
Are there any other colors you think would look good to dilute the orange??
The blue will work best because blue is opposite to orange on the color wheel.
great job. next time use peroxide to stop the process.
I've been trying this but my shirt still doesn't change its color, is it on my bleach or the kind of fabric I'm using? Thank you for the response
My friend did it and her shirt bleached to a gray color instead of orange. I wish I knew the answer, bleach is usually strong enough to affect dark fabric. Maybe try a test and don't dilute the bleach with water
If the fabric has a high acrylic content it wont bleach as well! Go for cotton fabric
Wouldn’t want to bleach out all my black parts either 😎
What is the blend on the shirt? I am just worried about it getting holes 😞
If you dilute the bleach and don't leave it on long you should be fine, I have made a few, and my family has as well and no one got any holes, however I would feel terrible if my advice ruined a nice shirt. Practice on a stained shirt

how would this go on a black graphic tee?
It should work, but the bleach might affect the image or logo
I guess you can use a stencil pattern
Ughhh cant wait! Turn mistakes into art kids 😂
Mine didn’t change color, I’m using a black Gildan 100% cotton tee and clorox bleach. Anyone know why?
Did you dilute the bleach with water?

any one tell me which bleach can i use
Concentrated bleach cleaner
EXCELLENT save & FUN for ALL my F@#KED 😢 up T’s‼️
I’m glad I’m not the only one ruining my clothes…:)
I like how everybody adds color after the bleach while I’m over here with 50 million plain bleached shirts
Nice
Thanks
Which type of theme name we can say😂
I recently ruined a BRAND NEW black hoodie while using bleach so I guess this is a good excuse to experiment with this
My question is, would it be difficult to ball up and put the rubber bands on as it's quite a thick material compared to a T-Shirt
❤️❤️❤️
" I'm dying to see how this turns out." So was that an intentional pun to be funny or just coincidental?
I wish I was that funny
The reason you are bleaching your shirt is the same reason I am watching this video. 😅
It’s been 10 minutes andddd it’s not changing colors😐 maybe I put too much water?
Did anything happen after that? Ik its been one month but for me its still black
that is really interesting!!! Bleach usually bleaches... I wonder what kind of fabric that is
Yeah nothing changed on mine either. I also did a black t shirt. Wonder if I should have used more bleach than water
I had this same issue, so I grabbed another shirt thinking it was the fabric blend. Turned out, I was using regular bleach. When I grabbed a bottle of concentrated bleach it worked just like in the video. Hope this helps anyone looking to do this.
