Please, never rinse plaster of Paris down the sink. It coats the pipes and then the pipes need replacing!
yes I was going to say the same thing. yes common sense told me but I have a plumber husband who set up a whole new sink in my craft room so I dont use my house sinks for anything not even paint water lol or paint brush water n if he sees a spot od paint he reminds me again thrn I say I washed my hands n then he reminds my thats why he bought n installed another sink that dont matter if it gets paint drop stains on it lol. oh but my point even though the drain is like commercial size still can't put plaster of Paris down it lol
"Why is it Plaster of Paris?... Why not Plaster of Alabama..." That part had me laughing so much!! Thanks for sharing Stacy :)
Start w very cold water in container you plan to mix the plaster in. I even add ice cubes so it’s extra cold. I mix in a pinch of baking soda to the powder. The cold water and baking powder slows down the hardening so it buys you more time since it sets so quickly. I slowly spoon the plaster into the water and I stir VERY slowly. These are also steps which slow the hardening down. You may not need more time depending on what your project is but because of what I’m using it for I very much need the extra 15-30 it gives me.
I LOVED WATCHING THIS, THIS LADY IS SO DOWN TO EARTH, SHOWS FAULTS AS WELL AS PERFECT. THANK YOU. CHEERS TRIXIE.
Brushing talcum powder lightly in your silicone molds before pouring helps the release process. Have found it really helps prevent breakage on the more delicate pieces when you are taking them out of the molds.
Like this tutorial! Plaster of Paris was a product mom used to make really nice plaques a long time ago! Amazing how something OLD is new again!saying it is old...I mean like60 plus years!!
Tip: I saw a video, and they mix oil and soap together, then coat molds so the tiny areas don't break. They also do the same thing when using the plaster item to make another mold design to sell. They just coat the plaster with the same mixture and coat with plaster. It showed it didn't stick. Hope that helps. 🤗 I'm gonna try it the way I saw. Yes, please don't put down the sink it will clog your pipes. I had some in a plastic bowl, a tiny bit filled with water, and it still got hard as a rock couldn't get off bowl.
Hi Stacy! The reason it's called plaster of Paris is become it was originally from Montmartre, Paris. It was made from gypsum deposits in Montmartre. :D
Thanks Sandy!
My mom used to do this and sold them back in early 2000s. Glad to come across your videos
Thanks for the great tips & for keeping me company whilst I used my moulds! Funnily enough I found my unused yet big container of plaster of Paris that I bought last year! 👍🏼🤩⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love Art's and Crafts I have been doing it for over 30 years
I am just starting with using molds and found it very helpful with how well you explained the process. Thank you!
Pretty, thanks for sharing Stacy😊
Pretty awesome, gotta try this! Thanks for sharing! Great stuff as always!
I really love this plaster stuff. Thx for showing
L-O-V-E the glue idea!!!
Thanks for making this video. It's given me the confidence to try a project I've been thinking about using plaster.
Love these, now to find out how you used them :)
I have a bag of Plaster of Paris here and moulds - fun awaits.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with the plaster and the 'recipe'.
I thought you were so supposed to add plaster to the water not water to plaster
You are. I learned how to cast plaster over 60 years ago... there's a science to adding plaster to the water... then there's a resting period that I have yet to see anyone do. It's no wonder we hear about it drying too fast, cracking, and other problems...
Thank you very showing ALL the details from beginning to end! Great teaching skills! Now subscribed! 👍
I think I have something similar from when I was getting my room painted. I will try to mix with glue and make some embellishments. Very useful video. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing I learned a lot!! I'm not afraid to try to use it now.
lol you're so funny. Love your comments about Plaster of Paris
Its stunning!
Loved the sea shells and the mermaid tail.
You should add the powder to the water, gently sprinkle the powder into the water till almost all the water is used up. Also add the glue to the water first.
Thank you. I subscribed just because i learned so many tips about plaster of Paris from you. I had trouble sometimes with cracks. But you found the solution for it. Will try and let you know soon.
Just came thru your channel n loved the way you described every single detail ..ThAnkyou so much for sharing it ..am surprised as to how could ppl comment in a negative manner ..u are amazing ...stay safe n hv subscribed to your channel
HAHAHA! I love you, I am so like you, with the eyeballing! Thanks for this video!
This video was very helpful thank you so much💕
you should use a disposable piping bag to put the plaster in the moulds just cut a little bit off the end and throw away when done
Brilliant idea to make sure all the crevices are filled with no air pockets
This was awesome!
Thank you for sharing honey! xoxo
Ive just tried backing a larger plaster mold with great stuff foam. It bonds, fills in the pockets and voids, all the while offering more strength. Now I can set it down and not worry about the plaster because it comes with it's own foam cushion.
Great video, lots of answers to questions I had.
In short: Plaster of Paris. A large gypsum deposit near the hill Montmartre (now part of Paris) Before it became part of Paris it had a village on the hill and was still outside of Paris. The villagers economic motor was selling the plaster. In 1860 it became a part of Paris. The (probably good quality) plaster had become known as plaster of Paris.
Thanks for the info. Wish I had known that when I was at the Basilica. I am just beginning to work with plaster of Paris. Believe it or not, I am "making" a cake".
Great video! So glad I found your channel.
Hilarious 😂 and a lot of great tips.. thanks❤️
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing.
Very informative and useful.
Love these plaster pieces. So much I want to try, too many things to buy and an empty wallet. Haha. Guess I just need to buy 1 at a time and be patient. I have no patience though. TFS.
to make sure it doesn't break just put Vaseline on the mold
Shampoo?
Would spray on cooking spray work too? We don’t use vaseline in our home.
Do you rub Vaseline inside the mold? Or rub Vaseline on the plastered mold when you take it out?
Wonderful store
I bought Sculpey Molds too & I agree with you, too much money to be made so poorly. I added hot glue to the back of mine & it helped some. Nice & Helpful Video!
So cool. tfs Stacy
gotta get me some moulds now...i need them bad! thanks stacey
shell from oz xxxxxxxx
lightly dusting your molds with cornstarch helps them to release easier sometimes
is there something besides cornstarch or flour you can dust with...major allergic
@@shweetsandi baby powder?
TFS this video. I really enjoyed it and got a lot of tips and tricks from it. I think the face mold is specifically for polymer clay since it is sold in the Sculpey Clay area in the craft stores, but I think they came out really well considering.
Great video thanks for sharing
Watched on double speed and also picked up a lot of great info in the comments.
ty for shareing with us
Wonderfull I Like it a lot! 👍💓👍
Can I add some type of coloring to the mix? Thank you for the tutorial.
Thank you Stacy for another good tutorial. I've only used my molds for polymer, so I think I will give this a try. I have plaster of paris also, but I think to achieve a vintage look, I can add brown paint to the mixture before pouring? We'll see.
To all my different clays I add 1 tsp of hand lotion, depending on how much I'm making. The POP doesn't crack as much, especially if I'm using molds. I never tried adding glue to POP, but have used it with paper mache and corn starch clay.. Thank you for the tip on that
Great tutorial
Hi. At 21:00 when you found that the paste was already hardening, would it have been a good idea to mix in a few drops of water at that stage?
Also .. your releasing method is wrong my friend. You need to invert the mold and gently push from thr back.
And that mermaid tail!! Gotta get
HEY there! Loved this video but I have an update for you! I've been experimenting with some molds that are small and very detailed. I've found if you put a thin coat of PVC glue over the entire mold and let it dry then you can easily pull out all of the tiny pieces in one go without them cracking or getting stuck. For larger highly detailed molds I tried putting a thicker coating of glue on the back... Worked like a charm to get the pieces out without cracking!!!
ohh thanks for the info!! Thats smart!
starwolf539yptwey
you put the PVC glue on mold and let it dry before you put in any plaster of paris? Will the PVC glue come out of molds ok?
Hi! Discovered you recently! LOVE EVERY THING i have watched....such fun, just as you are!! So i just subscribed :-)
Aww thanks so much Wuki!
amazing ❤
Your nice and u Rock I did subscribe
Maybe dust the mold for the fragile ones with cornstarch before pouring would help stop the cracking and wait longer before bending the mold to remove the other ones.. Or you can use a drop of dish soap in a spray bottle of water and spray your mold. Also, you want really cold water and put the PoP in the water slowly but do not stir while evenly sprinkling it in. When it will not soak up anymore slowly stir it in. It should look like pancake batter This slows down the hardening process.
Make sure you let the left over to harden and throw away in the garbage.. It will ruin your pipes. I'm sure you know that but l thought l'd better mention for others who don't know.
You can also make texture paste with it .. whoop!
But, I'd give it a shot. ~Shrug~
Neat molds btw.. 🌺
@Lisa Godin 🙋♀️
you did great. i learned alot
the one from the craft shop could be fixed by placing it in to a layer of sand and that would keep it level
thank you darling. Subscribed
I like to make mine a little watery/runny so that it dont dry up on me. so a nice thin consistency works for me again just my opinion. I buy my plaster of Paris by a 25lb bag n it lasts forever it's so cheap.
Sharing is caring shared this
So cool! Thanks for helping me keep from crying during my TENS treatment. I was able to focus and even wondered if adding more glue would help keep the small pieces together. Thanks so much for sharing!!
Aww sorry you had to sit through being shocked.... im glad I helped make it better... shocking isnt it? hahaha sorry, is that too soon? But yeah I think adding more glue might be the answer, ill have to try that! :)
Why is it called Plaster of Paris? you asked??? Plaster of Paris, or simply plaster, is a type of building material based on calcium sulfate hemihydrate (gypsum.) A large gypsum deposit at Montmartre in Paris is the source of the name.
Please add the plaster paris to the water not the opposite
Lots of great information! I appreciate your point that viewers of your channel become subscribers (which I have done.) Not to sound negative but it would make your video more interesting if you trimmed it down by editing out areas where you are mixing the plaster and tapping out bubbles and if you could reduce the amount of chatting. Thank you.
I thought Plaster of Paris and water is enough but need to add glue to make a nice creation from Plaster. Thanks for this helpful video.
Very nice
Hi i just subscribed to your channel and im liking it.
See the was the first video I found of yours. It was helpful.
Try misting your molds before adding plaster mix. The water will help the mold come out easy.
What do you mist it with
@@kassb4287 water with a very small amount of soap. The soap helps break the surface tension of the water.
Try using a icing bag from cake dec supplies.
Ty🌹
Would love to see a reply to these questions as I am interested in the answers
I just found out your video fr your friend and i subscribed alteady :))
If you were to put the plaster in just one of the long ones that break easily, would it be less likely to break?
I've always enjoyed using plaster of Paris, I buy mine at Home Depot.
I've been using plaster of paris for years as gesso on my canvases. I actually like it better than gesso, for many reasons. The consistency I use is as thick, or thin, as pancake batter. Or eggnog. It's never dried on me either. But like I said I thin it out.
Hey- great video. wondering if plaster of Paris cracks easily, or is it somewhat durable.. also does the glue help bind and make is stronger?? have you used air dry clay- how does it compare to plaster of paris??
I'm new to this but I do have the mermaid tail so I'm going to have a play around today with my Grandson What do you do with the pieces after painting them
Glue is a great idea! I mix it with resin, super solid!
hi! what kind of resin do you use?
@@hungrysimi currently I use the one to one ratio resin, I don’t have a favorite yet. I just mixed resin and plaster of Paris a couple days ago and I used too much POP, the results dulled the colors and my items look like plastic. If you use less, POP you get more of the shiny glass look. but I have never measured.
@@angierox6964 but what kind of resin is it? synthetic? what brand is it? what's the chemical name of it?
I mixed it in a paper bowl I did big and little circles it mixed well with a plastic spoon
I make brooches with mine I'm wondering what do people put on the back to make it look nice besides the clip do u paint glue on velvet what ????
Does it dry white? I can’t tell if it’s white or more beige
Just a question; can I use this as a candle holder or candle jar ?
I use a ziploc bag to mix plaster.
Thank you mam.
I am so glad I found your channel. Thank you for making this video. It is very very helpful
Done subscribing! 😀👍🏼
I need to make a custom mold with uniform nubs sticking up evenly space with each row off set alternating any suggestions
What if you sprayed the mold with a silicon releasing agent before you put the plaster in ?
Your tutorials are fantastic! I'm trying to harden lace to look like porcelain so I'll use your recipe and see what happens, ;)
Were you successful?
Thankyou. Could you fill the underside of the face Mold with plaster to strengthen?
aafter its fry and finished, will it get ruined if it gets wet?
They are beautiful! Now what will you do with them?
