two-at-a-timing saves me every time. did that with socks, adapted it to sweater sleeves (did sleeves for a bottom-up sweater, currently doing sleeves for a top-down sweater two at a time, because otherwise i would just never finish them *ever*.) Love your channel, you're a great teacher with true passion for your craft!
Thank you, as a major sufferer of second sock syndrome (I have ADD, finishing anything is difficult enough, but somehow making pairs of things is extra hard) I’d love to learn this, and your videos are very helpful for me. I am Swedish so I knit the same way as you do, the European style or whatever it’s called. In fact, this video gave me the motivation I needed to pick up my latest project again and get going!
Don't think of it as ADD. 😂Just like me, you are very creative, and repeatedly doing the same thing soon bores us. I knit, crochet, sew, blah blah, plus, I'm an artist and photographer. Just as I'd never take multiple photos of the exact same scene, or paint multiple pictures of the exact same scene, I just cannot do any patterns exactly the same way multiple times. I must change something to make it fresh and new to my senses. I'll change the hook size, yarn, sequence of rows that create a different pattern, etc, so doing 2 socks, 2 gloves, etc, is not my thing. I don't have ADD or OCD (not enough for it to be a problem anyway😅) But, having 2 of a thing on a circular needle feels like I'm doing only 1, or 2 pieces of 1, and it eases me, so I can complete two at the same time. One of the biggest obstacles for me is putting the work down and then picking it up later. My tension may be tighter or looser, so the socks or mittens don't match well enough to suit me unless I'm doing them together on a circular needle. No doubt you are going to love doing two at a time of socks, gloves, mittens, earrings, etc etc. Knit happily, Little Sunflower!😉🤣❤
@NimbleNeedles Norman, you have taught me soooo much with your tutorials! Truly, I appreciate your knowledge, your willingness to share, the tranquility of your voice, and the confidence you show as your stitches glide from needle to needle. I'm 76, taught myself to knit at age 59, and love it. Thanks to RUclips, your channel appeared in my feed, and I've spent hours watching and absorbing as much as I can from you. Earlier this year, I had a stroke, and it affected my right arm, not so noticeable until I picked up my needles, and there was absolutely no muscle memory in my arm. I was trying to knit somewhere between Continental and American.... which simply did not connect. I can crochet just fine, but I learned that when I was 16. Thanks to your videos, I've watched you knitting different ways, and now, I've got it again! Norman, I'll always be grateful to you for restoring my knitting ability. Thank-you, my friend. JOY. 😘
I had never thought to do 2 at same time. I have been making baby socks and slippers one at a time but this way you know for sure they will be the same amount of rows! Genius!! I appreciate you So Much, Norman!!!! 🧶💜
I have found when casting on for toe up, if I make a backward thumb loop cast on for the very last stitch, it holds the stitches on the needle so I can cast on for the second sock and not lose any stitches or make any knots!
I’m not a sock knitter, but after watching your excellent, very comprehensive tutorial which shows it’s much simpler than I imagined, I might give it a try. Just maybe … Thank you, Norman.
Thanks Norman! I usually knit TAAT. However, i haven't CO at the same time until today! I have always CO separately on dpns and slipped them onto my magic loop with the beginning of round on the right-hand side to start with. Next pair, I'll have to give this version a try remembering where the beginning of round for each sock actually is. Once I got used to TAAT, it seemed to be the natural way to knit socks. To the casual observer who doesn't knit, TAAT makes one look like a genius magician!
Norman, once again thank you for such good, clear instructions and demo and for allowing us toe-up-preferers (I don’t think that’s a word, sorry) to dive right in at that point. You’re the best.
I just tried making my first 2aat socks toe up and kind of enjoyed it. I wish I had had your tip about pinning the socks together to stop them sliding apart on the needles. I love the description of the "magic loop dance". I tend to think of it as the "magic loop shuffle" but yours seems a lot more positive so am going to try to think of it that way. I will also be giving top down 2aat a go now having seen this now. It seems so much simpler than I thought❤
I tried with a sample to learn these techniques. I learned so much and your instructions always include the pitfalls and mistakes importantly, the “why” ! I also really appreciate my old school one at a time, DPNs method. I’m pretty fast and enjoy all sorts of patterns. I love socks because they are relatively quick and small enough to pick up and do a section. ❤❤❤
Apptempting to make my 1st pair of socks, I already have sss🤪 and will frame the one sock I made, lol. This will be my go-to video. Thank you so much for all your great videos, I truly appreciate you, Norman😊
Perfect timing! I've wanted to try this and have watched a couple of videos, but you've done an excellent job of explaining it all in 1 video. I appreciate all the work you put into the videos!
Hi Norman! 😊 Thank you for the great video! I prefer knitting my socks and mitts/mittens two-at-a-time because I don’t have to constantly count rounds to make sure my socks/mitts are the same 😂 It was driving me absolutely mad before I discovered two-at-a-time method a few years ago. I highly recommend this method to anyone who needs to knit two identical items! From now on when someone asks me how to do it - I’ll send them to this video ❤ Thank you!
I'm knitting my pair using 2 circulars and progress in sync 😊. I love to watch this video I will give it a try top-down with simple vanilla pattern. Thank you as always you have the most amazing closeups and you resolve row by row all problems.
Thank you for this fabulous tutorial. I just started TaaT mitts and it's going great. I was originally taught the method where the first half of one mitt is knit, then the second mitt, then the second half of the first mitt. This is a better method for me.
Thank you for the tutorial. I don't have second sock syndrome but I have now knit so many socks in different colours, that I have a pair of socks worth of left overs and this seems to be a good technique to ensure that my scrap yarn socks will at least look like the patchwork effect was desired and not just stash busting. =D
Ha! I'm telling you, you cam already. Just dive into it. Knit one super short and small sample sock (just abbreviate the pattern by diving everything by 2 or 4) ...and you'll understand the process pretty soon!
Hi Norman. Great video! You explain things so well! The only socks I’ve ever made have been 2 at a time top down but on 2 separate circulars. My yarn was forever twisting! Your tip on this is fantastic! I think the advantages for me would be consistent gauge and finishing them together. I tried doing a toe up sock a while back and I just couldn’t get gauge. I bought the smallest needles and tried but it was still too large. I see so many patterns and videos done with sock yarn but I like making worsted weight wool for my husband to keep him warm. It’s frustrating trying to find a decent pattern. Thank you for another fantastic video!🤗❤️
🙏 Norman, I rescue yarn from Opportunity Shops and as it’s usually only the odd ball mastering your tutorial ensures my orphan yarns a matching sibling in socks. 😊
I made a spindle for drawing yarn from both the outside and the inside of a skein by causing it to spin when pulling from the outside. It's a bit hard to get the skein centered on the spindle, but as you pull from the inside it becomes less of a problem. I used a long knitting needle as my spindle and had it sticking up through a small storage box that I had heavy stuff from other crafting material in. To this box I attached some guide loops made of coat hanger wire, one above the center of the skein the other about mid height to it for the end coming off the outside. I think that the yarn cake would go on easier because you can be sure that the spindle needle isn't running on the wrong side of a strand of yarn.
thank you Norman. I have used the toe up cast on for my first socks few weeks ago and I thought is it not possible to use it also the other way - cuff down. Will definitelly use your tutorial next time for cuff down socks
I’ve tried this and had a terrible time keeping the yarn from getting tangled. So I knit two at a time with two sets of needles a two separate cakes of yarn. I just switch about every two inches, or after a good pausing place, such as the toes, heels, cuffs. 😊
I knit mine two at a time because I’m a picky perfectionist and the socks have to be identical. I use 2 short circs and Jenny’s magic cast on. Half of each sock on each needle.

So I appreciated this video. Am I right in assuming if you do a regular flap and gusset heel you can just continue across both socks knitting back and forth flat?
I originally had that info included but thr video just got too long. Basically you knit it the same way. First one heel flap, turn...and then you pick up stitches from the left side...switch to the other sock, knit the heel flap, turn the heel, pick up from the left side, knit across, switch to other sock, pick up from the right side of the flap...etc ☺️
I wonder, could you please recommend a bind off for 2x2 rib when doing toe up socks? I've seen ones for 1x1, but every one I've tried flares out the ribbing, which defeats the purpose, I think! Granted I haven't done many socks, yet, but I trust your wisdom!
Great video. What heel method can I use for toe up two at a time? I was following your other video for toe up socks but the heel doesn’t appear to work for two at a time. Can I just do my increases without bringing 2 stitches from the other needle??
Eh? Why wouldn't it work? Use the same technique I showed you here. And then work the flaps separately as well. Just knit until you can't go any further and jump over to the second sock
@@NimbleNeedles The technique here appears to be coming cuff down. I am going toe up using your other video for toe up socks but when slipping the 2 stitches from the other needle to either side to set up the gusset the end 2 can’t be slipped when there is an other sock. I’m going to try a fleegle heel. I think that will work.
@@brendawilliams8161 I do show how to slip stitches around in this video. There is no single heel you cannot knit taat I am aware of. But please do whatever you feel most comfortable with.
I have a beautiful knitting pattern that I don’t understand. I wish I could have some explanation of how to do it. RUclips doesn’t have any videos on this type of pattern either
well...that's entirely up to you, really. Most people have problems with cuffs that are a bit too tight. But use the cast-on of your choice...this video is more about the technique that is layered ontop of the cast-on rather than the actualy longtail cast-on
@@NimbleNeedles oooh that makes sense. Thank you for the reply! I haven’t made socks yet so I didn’t think about the tight cuffs. I just stumbled across this video because I thought it might be useful for a pair of fingerless gloves I’m about to make, but I don’t think I’m quite there yet ha ha
@@NimbleNeedles thank you. My dyslexia must be really interfering then as I am always very confused and have managed to knit them different sizes AND skew.
two 9 inch circular needles with each having one sock of a pair of socks cast on and knit at same time, I usually divide it up and do cuffs on one then the other, legs on one then the other, etc.@@NimbleNeedles
@@Therese504 well, typically you try a new technique with bigger needles first and the way it is shown and then you bring in your own variations - at least that is how I approach things! Still, if you have any pointers that would have increased charity, share them anytime ☺️
Hallo lieber Norman... Ich bin einer deiner vielen Fans und ich fasse mir heute mal ein Herz, um dich wissen zu lassen, dass man im Englischen you, do & two nicht jü, dü & tü ausspricht, sondern ju, du & tu... :)
Cat Bordhi has a better way. You cast on using the magic cast on, then knit using ball yarn and tail. Automatically increased and all you have to do is couch the yarn in the next few stitches and cut. So easy. I miss Cat so much.
@@NimbleNeedlesSo true- we all work differently and think differently. I began two at a time sock knitting with one ball. I struggled with the tangle factor! (To make it worse I was using two colors.) Next pair I took the time to make separate balls - so much easier for me!

26:28 toe up cast on
How do you keep track of which one has been knitted last?
Well, your needle position should tell you. There's only one way to continue
@@NimbleNeedles thank you. My dyslexia must be really interfering then as I am always very confused and have managed to knit them different sizes AND skew.
OMG you have the same kitchen scale as I do 😂❤
haha. I probably should buy a different one for these videos as it's a bit too high and shiny :P But for cooking I kinda like it.
Great video! Love your content and also could you make a sweeter tutorial. 😊
i am working on it..or rather starting to work on it :)
YAY 😊😊😊😊
Toe up 26:27 gotta come back to this
I want to do this, but with two circlers; hate magic loop
you can do that as well.
I think I would find it just a bit too fiddly to do two at a time like this. I do however like to do two at a time using two 9 inch circulars.
You mean, with two separate projects/needles
two 9 inch circular needles with each having one sock of a pair of socks cast on and knit at same time, I usually divide it up and do cuffs on one then the other, legs on one then the other, etc.@@NimbleNeedles
I find this much easier using two circulars,I just cannot get on with magic loop the excess cord flapping around really irritate me.
💛💛💛
I usually find your videos super helpful but I just can't understand this. Maybe it's because I use a knitted cast on.
well...i am not sure I can follow? Why are you using a knitted cast-on?
@@NimbleNeedles TBH it's the only cast on that I use. Also, the yarn I'm using is a lace weight and probably too fiddly for this technique.
@@Therese504 well, typically you try a new technique with bigger needles first and the way it is shown and then you bring in your own variations - at least that is how I approach things!
Still, if you have any pointers that would have increased charity, share them anytime ☺️
@@NimbleNeedles That's a good idea, thank you!
And thank you for taking the time to respond!!

Suffering from SSS 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂LMAO ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Hallo lieber Norman... Ich bin einer deiner vielen Fans und ich fasse mir heute mal ein Herz, um dich wissen zu lassen, dass man im Englischen you, do & two nicht jü, dü & tü ausspricht, sondern ju, du & tu... :)
Der kontext deines kommentars fehlt mir ein wenig.
🥰🥰🥰🥰
My method is simpler.
well, good for you, I guess. But maybe add your method so others may benefit from it ^^
Cat Bordhi has a better way. You cast on using the magic cast on, then knit using ball yarn and tail. Automatically increased and all you have to do is couch the yarn in the next few stitches and cut. So easy. I miss Cat so much.
Different ppl always prefer different things. That's what I love about knitting. What one finds hard or needlessly complicated another finds easy.
@@NimbleNeedlesSo true- we all work differently and think differently. I began two at a time sock knitting with one ball. I struggled with the tangle factor! (To make it worse I was using two colors.) Next pair I took the time to make separate balls - so much easier for me!
Hey ! Where’s your Christ icon?😢
On the wall? 😅
@@NimbleNeedles jaaa!)))
That attracted me first, and then of course you charisma 😄
Thank you ❤
