whichever orc engineer that designed that catapult at 2:48 should get a raise it was so well made it was able to lift a fully grown troll of the ground even after landing on it

Orcs (even when said so) aren’t stupid. They just need direction for a task at hand. They need someone to guide them to do tasks! That’s why Sauron had special orcs called Taskmasters to help guide orcs and other monstrosities for things like this. The orcs if given full potential- could be able to create things that rival other technologies! Of course they look ugly but they’re efficient and that’s all you need.

Now, hear me out. What if?…. Trolls really just LOVE. to fight. Like that’s all they ever dream of doing when they’re NOT fighting. They’re like Huskies. Mfers go APESHIT when human besty tells them they bout to get they zoomies on. The clubhands? That’s just their body mod. THEY did THAT to themselves. Some people get their nipples pierced; trolls get their hands clubbed. You can get that procedure done in any of their malls.

Nah man I don’t even think that’s the case for stumpy (yes that’s actually the troll’s name) he isn’t roaring in fury, he isn’t angry looking- he more looks like he’s in pain. And like- I can feel that happening, he’s in constant pain with his fucking weapons and the reigns attached to his eye lids. I think he’s begging for death at this point and we don’t even know it because he can’t speak any language. And in Lord of the Rings as a whole? The trolls are more used as slaves really! He mean they’re chained up, forced manual hard labor, and they’re too stupid to realize that they could take freedom any day but they just don’t understand the concept of it. The trolls that go to war? They’re smarter than the average troll sure! And they seem to have a lot of free will. But in the case for stumpy? And the other trolls who don’t get to choose? Well- it’s just a fucking sad existence.

@@reek4062 Personally I don’t care about either being contradictory to the books, the films and the books are separate entities made by different people so it would only make sense that they’re not identical.
But how is Helm’s Deep stupid nonsense? To me it’s one of the greatest battles in all of film history. There are issues with it of course (mostly the battle being won by Gandalf and the Rohirrim, not anyone actually already in the battle, feels like a cop out to me. “And then thousands of horsemen who we’ve barely seen before turned up and saved the day” feels cheap) but there’s so much good in it that I can easily overlook these flaws I’ve thought of. The Five Armies doesn’t have the good, and has about a thousand times more bad.

It is modeled after a children's book more or less, you know. Kind of a meme the whole time with the dwarfs so I'm not surprised that its less realistic
I don't now about LOTR at times. There's a lot of cavalry rushing even when the orcs clearly have their bows ready.
@Max Payne to be fair these are rohirrim horses, which are much stronger than the horses "nowadays". plus they had a wizard at helm's deep and the orcs at Minas Tirith were scared shitless.
It was just as bad, if not worse in LOTR. At the end of Fellowship they fight off a literal army by themselves.

I don't think there are many scenes more anti climatic than this one in any movie. The horn bellows, a giant bell cracks a hole in the mountain and where one is expecting a thousand troops or more to join the battle and turn the tide, out comes Sneezy, Sleepy, Doc, Happy, Grumpy, Dopey and Bashful to save the day.

I love how there was just a big ass battle between the dwarves and elves but there are no bodies from that and meanwhile, the elf army just disappears.
I guess that's what happens when your "strategy" is to jump over a shield wall to engage larger, stronger, heavier opponents that also happen to be heavily armored and much much more numerous
It was lazy writing. Apparently the elves were the most complex cgi to create so they only used them in a few scenes

I have always found the bit at 0:45 the funniest thing when he starts gently nudging his un-armoured head against Orks wearing steel plate helmets and it somehow kills them.

When you watch the scenes a few times over, you realize just how gruesome this was. The way things died...
The setup with that gigantic golden bell, the obivious copy of Gimli in Helm's Deep with Bombur, the fact that an army of dwarves in heavy plate armor seems to be desparate for the help of another dozen or so dwarves with vastly inferioir equipment, the surprised look on Azogs face, all while he is standing on a hill far away, so he probably can't see a damn thing - all this creates a very unique moment. Infact it is such a unique moment, that it would cause even the mighty Smaug himself to cringe so hard, he'd have goosebumps all over those powerful dragon scales.
I agree it's a bit silly but you'd be surprised by how much of a factor morale played in historical battles

To be fair to Azog. He IS far away, which means he was watching his troops win the battle through superior numbers and his tactical and strategic moves using the horns. Now he is watching his troops get walked through like shallow water. He is confused AF.

The reaction of the Trolls to a handful of Dwarfs charging from inside the mountain is the epitome of silliness in this movie. Plus the fact that Azog halted the army to get the Trolls into position just to drop like flies as soon as the battle started.
Well, they get their commands through horn-signals. Don't forget that trolls are pretty stupid, when they hear another horn-signal which sounds similar, they are stunned and don't know what to do with that.
But ye, them falling instantly each from one spear just like that was pretty lame.

the fact that a dwarf can pierce the heart of a troll with a well-placed throw, surely made by some Longbeards do seem possible to me,
throughout the Battle, on several occasions there are dwarves who throw their spears before joining the close combat with a 2-handed weapon or a sword.
The only problem is from 6 trolls to only 2 alive, that a bit much, 2 or 3 killed/Wounded would have been more realistic though.
+ i like to think of it like the LotR Games for PS2 where you were able to kill trolls with a Spear throw !
@@Lukart44 these are the same dwarves that took a castle after the death of a dragon. I'm not sure if the orcs knew that Bard killed the dragon. But imagine the ones who you thought killed the dragon charge at you and give the others strength and motivation.
Trolls are stupid and not immortal, they can be killed with a spear. You just rooted for the orcs, although they lost not only in the movie, but also in the book

This just goes to show that CGI can't beat practical effects. Watch this and then compare it to the Fellowship fighting the Uruk-hai just before they all split up. Night and Day
Exactly my thoughts.
Also notice how the sound design in these battle scenes is absolutely atrocious compared to the lord of the rings trilogy.
Practical effects are easy when dealing with small skirmishes. But when you need an army for a full battle, nothing beats cgi.

@@flakes1972 Well in WW2 in battle of Vizna Polish army had 700 soldiers and fought against German army with 40k soldiers, even with tanks, planes, heavy altillery. Poland losed, but they fought for 3 DAYS, and Germany lost much more soldiers. For me this battle was much more impresive than battle in Hobbit yet still it was real life
I love how when it’s focused on Thorin, Kili, and Fili fighting it’s all serious but when focused on any other dwarf int he company there’s a humorous feel to it

Yeah I hate how the movie kinda forgot the battle in the valley. The movie just stopped following the battle there and we never really know what happened to the elven army too.

2:39 I imagine that Jackson thought this shot of the dwarves wading forward, splitting the orc lines like a tide would look incredibly cool.
But to me it looks unfeasible. We've just had a prolonged battle where we've seen the armies of King Dain and the Gundabad Orcs being somewhat evenly matched, with the orcs winning through weight of numbers. The dwarves were clearly depicted looking exhausted and wounded as they retreated to the gates of Erebor, and then suddenly they're washing aside what is clearly shown to us to be a VAST army of foes that has already been demonstrated to be competent in their strength and brutality.
And suddenly they're being washed away, like they're not even there, by this supposedly exhausted and numerically inferior force of dwarves that they were defeating soundly five minutes ago?
It's kinda daft.
Tbf, I don't even think Peter Jackson was proud of this movie. Heard he was brought in very late into the thing, and he had been writing scripts like a day before shooting or something. I may be wrong.
But wereworms, giant trolls with prosthetic maces, Dwarves, Woodland Elves, giant trained bats, a grey Wizard, Hobbits, an enormous solid gold bell the size of a 4 story building and a hoarde of gold larger than all the gold in existence... All seems legit though..

It's hard take a scene seriously when, despite the character calling out for help, and the orchestra setting up the somber importance of the scene, the speaker continues to fend off orcs in full plate armor by headbutting them with his bare skull
Funny how 7 dwarfs are portrayed to make such a huge difference. Even trolls were instantly one shotted.
The Book is what the DM planned for and the Movies is what happens when he didn’t realize just how much the Players wanted to fight so he really made them too powerful so they don’t TPK.
Watching the elves fight is so satisfying. They are literally in sync with each other. Wish they included more scenes.

Man, if only peter Jackson had time to develop and put his touches in the hobbit properly without WB Studios forcing him to rush production. These battle scenes would've been epic like LOTR and wouldn't have gotten a choppy story line.

Despite a convoluted story and too much cartoonish comedy, the dwarves and orcs in this scene were fantastic and well done imo, both show great discipline and will that we don’t really see much in the LOTR movies
This shit makes me emotional my dad introduced me to hobbit and lord of the rings when i was young he died 3 years ago so it brings back good memories watching these clips remember that we always used to watch this

Just imagine. You’re a hardy northern orc/Uruk. You’ve obviously been alive for awhile, most of the orcs churned out later on we’re much smaller. Not you though. You’re old, large, strong, and fierce. You get the call, March all the way to Erebor. You survive the initial onslaught. You made it through an elite Elf army, as well as an armored dwarf phalanx in addition to the goats and chariots. After all that toil, fighting, killing….you get knocked unconscious by a fat dwarfs belly then killed by his companion while you’re on the ground.

I was thinking about that watching it but then realized that cutting the legs off and replacing them with those metal things makes the troll harder to take them for infantry units since there are no anckles to cut
Watching all the Hobbit movies made me appreciate how badass the dwarves are but it also led me to think about what their "abilities" are compared to the Elves. First, it seems like they're exceptionally durable. The way Dain Ironfoot repeatedly headbutts Orcs who are wearing armor makes me think the Dwarves have especially thick bones, much more than the Elves, Men, or Orcs. Of course, there are many other examples of their extraordinary endurance. Second, they have profoundly fast reflexes. While certainly not on the level of Elves, it's enough to give them a deadly prowess in battle against any enemy. Thirdly, they appear to be phenomenal engineers and are capable of building advanced tools of warfare that the other races don't have the skill/materials to build.
I've never read the books so I don't know if any of that is true to canon. Also, they have war-goats, so that's pretty cool too.
Don't forget, they are legendary drinkers, thanks to their durability!

that low-key badassery is only for these pathetic movies which look like a trailer for a second-rate vidya game. the only thing that holds true is their durability. they were intentionally made so kewl bc the studio demanded to "entertain audiences" first and foremost.
This is all plausible though. They evolved to live underground in much tougher physical conditioned and lead lives that get their hands much more dirty. (Figuratively speaking ofc, not necessarily literally getting their hands dirty.
