Thorin greeting his cousin during the battle like they just met for dinner just emphasises how completely devoid of any tension these action scenes are.
I don't think there are many scenes more anti climatic than this one in any movie. The horn bellows, a giant bell cracks a hole in the mountain and where one is expecting a thousand troops or more to join the battle and turn the tide, out comes Sneezy, Sleepy, Doc, Happy, Grumpy, Dopey and Bashful to save the day.

The reaction of the Trolls to a handful of Dwarfs charging from inside the mountain is the epitome of silliness in this movie. Plus the fact that Azog halted the army to get the Trolls into position just to drop like flies as soon as the battle started.
Well, they get their commands through horn-signals. Don't forget that trolls are pretty stupid, when they hear another horn-signal which sounds similar, they are stunned and don't know what to do with that. But ye, them falling instantly each from one spear just like that was pretty lame.
@@XXLShortyXXL I don't find it so shocking and pretty representative, the fact that a dwarf can pierce the heart of a troll with a well-placed throw, surely made by some Longbeards do seem possible to me, throughout the Battle, on several occasions there are dwarves who throw their spears before joining the close combat with a 2-handed weapon or a sword. The only problem is from 6 trolls to only 2 alive, that a bit much, 2 or 3 killed/Wounded would have been more realistic though. + i like to think of it like the LotR Games for PS2 where you were able to kill trolls with a Spear throw !

Trolls are stupid and not immortal, they can be killed with a spear. You just rooted for the orcs, although they lost not only in the movie, but also in the book
@@reek4062 Personally I don’t care about either being contradictory to the books, the films and the books are separate entities made by different people so it would only make sense that they’re not identical. But how is Helm’s Deep stupid nonsense? To me it’s one of the greatest battles in all of film history. There are issues with it of course (mostly the battle being won by Gandalf and the Rohirrim, not anyone actually already in the battle, feels like a cop out to me. “And then thousands of horsemen who we’ve barely seen before turned up and saved the day” feels cheap) but there’s so much good in it that I can easily overlook these flaws I’ve thought of. The Five Armies doesn’t have the good, and has about a thousand times more bad.
This vid (and part 1) are the "action only" clips, so it skips a bunch of mid-battle stuff that happened like the elves just sort of fucking off to go defend the town

Yeah I hate how the movie kinda forgot the battle in the valley. The movie just stopped following the battle there and we never really know what happened to the elven army too.
Well you know how it is, it's been scientifically proven to be impossible to be consistant when filming a movie. Also the CGI budget was bleeding buckets so....
Because back then they use real people not CGI. Nowadays it took times to assemble lots of people and tons of peripheral. Not only times, money as well.

I love how there was just a big ass battle between the dwarves and elves but there are no bodies from that and meanwhile, the elf army just disappears. I guess that's what happens when your "strategy" is to jump over a shield wall to engage larger, stronger, heavier opponents that also happen to be heavily armored and much much more numerous
Peter Jackson didn't have the same funds, control, NOR the same time, to devote to "The Hobbit" as he had been given for "Lord of the Rings". Also, he has a great love of CGI. His use of such in Fellowship and Two Towers was limited, due to it being a relatively new technique, and the films are all the better for their sparing use. He used more in Return (obviously needed with the Ghost Army, etc) but you can tell that, of the three, that last film has aged less well than the first two. Practical effects are ALWAYS better, with limited CGI to just add some "flair". But if he HAD been given the same time, control, and funds to make The Hobbit, even with more use of CGI, I'd bet it would have been a better trilogy. It's a fun watch as it is, but a poor adaptation of the book; which is the biggest shame as LotRs is THE best adaptation of ANY book I've ever had the privilege to watch.
Its doesn't have to be a plot armor, many kings like Alexander The Great, Jan III Sobieski foughts in front ranks in any battle and almost never get hurt
@@flakes1972 Well in WW2 in battle of Vizna Polish army had 700 soldiers and fought against German army with 40k soldiers, even with tanks, planes, heavy altillery. Poland losed, but they fought for 3 DAYS, and Germany lost much more soldiers. For me this battle was much more impresive than battle in Hobbit yet still it was real life

They were rushed hard by the top execs to just get it done, they had to sacrifice a lot of heart and quality to just spew out a product that would make a lot of quick money. And it did. Most people don't give a flying fuck about quality, just look at the success story that is the Fast and Furious franchise.
And it was originally 2 films but then studio mandate turned it into 3 films for another trilogy. The LOTR books got a movie each, but the Hobbit was one book split into 3 films.
The setup with that gigantic golden bell, the obivious copy of Gimli in Helm's Deep with Bombur, the fact that an army of dwarves in heavy plate armor seems to be desparate for the help of another dozen or so dwarves with vastly inferioir equipment, the surprised look on Azogs face, all while he is standing on a hill far away, so he probably can't see a damn thing - all this creates a very unique moment. Infact it is such a unique moment, that it would cause even the mighty Smaug himself to cringe so hard, he'd have goosebumps all over those powerful dragon scales.
To be fair to Azog. He IS far away, which means he was watching his troops win the battle through superior numbers and his tactical and strategic moves using the horns. Now he is watching his troops get walked through like shallow water. He is confused AF.
I was thinking about that watching it but then realized that cutting the legs off and replacing them with those metal things makes the troll harder to take them for infantry units since there are no anckles to cut

Watching all the Hobbit movies made me appreciate how badass the dwarves are but it also led me to think about what their "abilities" are compared to the Elves. First, it seems like they're exceptionally durable. The way Dain Ironfoot repeatedly headbutts Orcs who are wearing armor makes me think the Dwarves have especially thick bones, much more than the Elves, Men, or Orcs. Of course, there are many other examples of their extraordinary endurance. Second, they have profoundly fast reflexes. While certainly not on the level of Elves, it's enough to give them a deadly prowess in battle against any enemy. Thirdly, they appear to be phenomenal engineers and are capable of building advanced tools of warfare that the other races don't have the skill/materials to build. I've never read the books so I don't know if any of that is true to canon. Also, they have war-goats, so that's pretty cool too.
that low-key badassery is only for these pathetic movies which look like a trailer for a second-rate vidya game. the only thing that holds true is their durability. they were intentionally made so kewl bc the studio demanded to "entertain audiences" first and foremost.
This is all plausible though. They evolved to live underground in much tougher physical conditioned and lead lives that get their hands much more dirty. (Figuratively speaking ofc, not necessarily literally getting their hands dirty.

For me there is nothing more emotional than watching a wavering army realise their doom but then their worries dissipate as they accept their end and in that final moment they rally and fight harder than they've ever fought in their entire lives with a unified emotion, passion, strength and unity.
Sadly no, in The Lord of the Rings, Dain had to defend Erebor from a host of Easterlings, (off camera, just what Tolkien has told us) and eventually died. Erebor was almost overrun, as was dale, but eventually the mountain’s defense destroyed the Easterling horde
Man, if only peter Jackson had time to develop and put his touches in the hobbit properly without WB Studios forcing him to rush production. These battle scenes would've been epic like LOTR and wouldn't have gotten a choppy story line.

I love how when it’s focused on Thorin, Kili, and Fili fighting it’s all serious but when focused on any other dwarf int he company there’s a humorous feel to it
Saruman in LOTR: Didn’t have enough materials so he had to dug up a canyon and cut down a magic forest to arm his army of Uruk-hais. Azog in Hobbits: casually shows up with fully armed orc army.
In the book it is explained to us that the coordination of Thorin first and the audacity of Dáin second transmitted confidence and courage to the others, as Gimli says, the dwarves are too good at short notice.
I have always loved the Dwarfs since the Lord of the Rings came out and i love how much they focused on them in the newer movies. They are some of the best characters throughout this all.

But how is Helm’s Deep stupid nonsense? To me it’s one of the greatest battles in all of film history. There are issues with it of course (mostly the battle being won by Gandalf and the Rohirrim, not anyone actually already in the battle, feels like a cop out to me. “And then thousands of horsemen who we’ve barely seen before turned up and saved the day” feels cheap) but there’s so much good in it that I can easily overlook these flaws I’ve thought of. The Five Armies doesn’t have the good, and has about a thousand times more bad.
Just add 10 people to an army and you'll win

This just goes to show that CGI can't beat practical effects. Watch this and then compare it to the Fellowship fighting the Uruk-hai just before they all split up. Night and Day

Also notice how the sound design in these battle scenes is absolutely atrocious compared to the lord of the rings trilogy.
Practical effects are easy when dealing with small skirmishes. But when you need an army for a full battle, nothing beats cgi.

Watching the elves fight is so satisfying. They are literally in sync with each other. Wish they included more scenes.

I guess that's what happens when your "strategy" is to jump over a shield wall to engage larger, stronger, heavier opponents that also happen to be heavily armored and much much more numerous
It was lazy writing. Apparently the elves were the most complex cgi to create so they only used them in a few scenes
Peter Jackson didn't have the same funds, control, NOR the same time, to devote to "The Hobbit" as he had been given for "Lord of the Rings". Also, he has a great love of CGI. His use of such in Fellowship and Two Towers was limited, due to it being a relatively new technique, and the films are all the better for their sparing use. He used more in Return (obviously needed with the Ghost Army, etc) but you can tell that, of the three, that last film has aged less well than the first two. Practical effects are ALWAYS better, with limited CGI to just add some "flair".
But if he HAD been given the same time, control, and funds to make The Hobbit, even with more use of CGI, I'd bet it would have been a better trilogy. It's a fun watch as it is, but a poor adaptation of the book; which is the biggest shame as LotRs is THE best adaptation of ANY book I've ever had the privilege to watch.

Poland losed, but they fought for 3 DAYS, and Germany lost much more soldiers. For me this battle was much more impresive than battle in Hobbit yet still it was real life

The setup with that gigantic golden bell, the obivious copy of Gimli in Helm's Deep with Bombur, the fact that an army of dwarves in heavy plate armor seems to be desparate for the help of another dozen or so dwarves with vastly inferioir equipment, the surprised look on Azogs face, all while he is standing on a hill far away, so he probably can't see a damn thing - all this creates a very unique moment. Infact it is such a unique moment, that it would cause even the mighty Smaug himself to cringe so hard, he'd have goosebumps all over those powerful dragon scales.
I agree it's a bit silly but you'd be surprised by how much of a factor morale played in historical battles

I know its been a year since you posted this comment but i cannot believe that i actually found someone who actually likes the movie and doesn't criticize every little fucking detail. Much love man!!

Watching all the Hobbit movies made me appreciate how badass the dwarves are but it also led me to think about what their "abilities" are compared to the Elves. First, it seems like they're exceptionally durable. The way Dain Ironfoot repeatedly headbutts Orcs who are wearing armor makes me think the Dwarves have especially thick bones, much more than the Elves, Men, or Orcs. Of course, there are many other examples of their extraordinary endurance. Second, they have profoundly fast reflexes. While certainly not on the level of Elves, it's enough to give them a deadly prowess in battle against any enemy. Thirdly, they appear to be phenomenal engineers and are capable of building advanced tools of warfare that the other races don't have the skill/materials to build.
I've never read the books so I don't know if any of that is true to canon. Also, they have war-goats, so that's pretty cool too.
Don't forget, they are legendary drinkers, thanks to their durability!

that low-key badassery is only for these pathetic movies which look like a trailer for a second-rate vidya game. the only thing that holds true is their durability. they were intentionally made so kewl bc the studio demanded to "entertain audiences" first and foremost.
This is all plausible though. They evolved to live underground in much tougher physical conditioned and lead lives that get their hands much more dirty. (Figuratively speaking ofc, not necessarily literally getting their hands dirty.

For me there is nothing more emotional than watching a wavering army realise their doom but then their worries dissipate as they accept their end and in that final moment they rally and fight harder than they've ever fought in their entire lives with a unified emotion, passion, strength and unity.

Sadly no, in The Lord of the Rings, Dain had to defend Erebor from a host of Easterlings, (off camera, just what Tolkien has told us) and eventually died. Erebor was almost overrun, as was dale, but eventually the mountain’s defense destroyed the Easterling horde
And Mirkwood was still recovering from the Battle of Five Armies

In the book it is explained to us that the coordination of Thorin first and the audacity of Dáin second transmitted confidence and courage to the others, as Gimli says, the dwarves are too good at short notice.

I have always loved the Dwarfs since the Lord of the Rings came out and i love how much they focused on them in the newer movies. They are some of the best characters throughout this all.
