  • The Deacon is an alien that didn't get much screen time in Prometheus, but when I took a look at explaining them, there was alot to delve into. Is it a proto xenomorph? Does it fit into the xenomorph family tree at all? There is a ton of extra information on these aliens in the Dark Horse Fire and Stone comics, so we'll go there too for a look at their expanded universe history. The Deacon alien explained!

    The one, unifying constant across all of these mediums, stories and iterations of the Xenomorph are real life executives that probably shouldn't have meddled in the development of the series, the lore and it's art.

      I want an rts game that is set in the Era of the book that is right after the events of ALIENS. A cult brings aliens to earth, and the entire military, including the colonial marines, are desperately trying to defend planetary evac sites. Would be epic. In the book, an engineer ship is waiting for the humans to leave, to decimate the xenomorphes, as the engineers entire weaponry, has been developed specifically around thier absolute hate for xenomorphs.
      A shame I can't rember the name. I am 33 now, and I read the book when I was 12. Fantastic book, really gripped me.

    I love how the movie tapped into evolutionary concepts. The giant mother of all "face-huggers" when it attacked the engineer near the end of Prometheus. Later the deacon is born from the engineer's torso. I loved it. The Deacon's appearance was dead on in my opinion. It was exactly the way it should have been.

    • @phantomreaver85
      @phantomreaver85 Год назад +12

      None of that has anything to do with evolution in any way shape or form. If they were smart they would have made the black goo come from the xenomorph themselves. Since they incorporate the DNA of their hosts they could have made it so the engineers found the xenos on in an isolated star system, started farming the xenos for their black goo, which has the same DNA merging properties, like we do with bees and honey the xenos escape and become an invasive species that starts ravaging anything they come in contact with. Would have been much more in line with the original trilogy amd avoided all the dumb cliches and tropes that prometheus and covenant screwed up the series with. Not to mention creating us with the black goo in this way would make humans part xeno which could have had many cool implications.

    • @lola-to9om
      @lola-to9om Год назад +1

      @@phantomreaver85 I thought that same thing but it wouldn’t work in alien universe because the writers made the engineers the creator of humans and maybe aliens
      but I don’t think they ever explained where xenomorphs/“Decon” came from in the movies and what is black goo where it came from why it’s react differently on different life forms
      I think it your theory would make sense that engineers found an alien species and turn them into monsters so they can use them as weapon against humans if we ever turn against them but they failed couldn’t complete the project and crashed on that planet and David continued the unfinished project which originally engineers started the end 😊

    • @WickedPrince3D
      @WickedPrince3D 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@lola-to9om A point I think most are forgetting; the black goo was similar to the black substance the engineer drinks at the beginning of Prometheus to dissolve himself into his component DNA to create life on Earth. The earlier black goo wasn't intended to create Xeno's until the Engineers modified it to kill humanity. Or possibly it just had a severe affect on the native life on LV426. Interestingly when they announced Aliens coming out I had an idea for a survival RPG one-shot arc where Marines are sent to rescue people kidnapped by pirates using LV426 as a base. When they get there they discover everyone dead and the place crawling with Xeno's and it becomes a survive and escape. I'd named the planet after one of the various names of hell; and was amused when the movie came out and we discovered that LV426 was now called Acheron; which is another name for hell, just as I imagined. I've forgotten the name I was going to use, "Tartarus" maybe.

      @phantomreaver, did you read the scripts?!? That’s exactly what they started with! The first deacon was a god the engineers worshipped and used his blood to create new life. Everything else was an attempt for them to recreate the Deacon. Apparently the first one was sentient and not a violent predatory animal.

  • @MichaelGerrard
    @MichaelGerrard 4 года назад +300

    I wish Covenant had explored this evolution rather than explain away the Alien by saying David made it. In my mind the Alien already existed when we see Prometheus, is at this due to the mural. This makes the Alien more mythical and foreboding. The Deacon is a clue to the origin of the Alien, nothing more.
    The comic book mountain idea is far out! I think it could work as a film but remove the Deacon from the story. The goo mutated a mountain, or perhaps the vegitation. Exploring how the goo alters living matter is interesting. Maybe if the mountain organism touched a mechanical object this is where the biomechanical creature concept could emerge.
    It is a shame Covenant didn't go in this direction. I still want a sequel though!

    • @AzayBae
      @AzayBae 4 года назад +24

      Michael Gerrard
      I think the Engineers took a species, maybe closer to the deacon?, and after experimentation created the true xenomorph.
      David’s creature in Covenant isn’t the real one yet. It didn’t spawn as a chestburster and appeared to be much larger. We also don’t see a Queen so maybe David made the eggs using animals.
      I think in the films David is trying to recreate the species then improve them.
      The mural you pointed out and the fact that the ship on the planet in Alien was so old the Engineer fossilized does mean Xenomorphs are older than David. He is trying to recreate them.
      Which means the video was a bit wrong. The eggs in Alien were Engineer made due to the age of the craft. The xenos in Aliens and Alien 3 are descendants of that hive too. So, the only xenos in the main films that aren’t engineer made are in Resurrection.

I like the idea of different forms of Xenomorphs but they went overboard when they're all, functionally, basically the same, it did not need to be this complicated unless there were going to be some massive differences in abilities from the Deacon vs a regular Xenomorph with traits of whatever it birthed from. I think they could possibly use it as a queen variant of xenomorphs. Like if deacon layed eggs that made facehuggers and if they encountered humans it would make a queen xeno. Would be a cool concept to explore, you dont really hear much on how queens come about in the franchise.
      Edit: it also fits into the bioweapon theme; queen xeno = xeno factory, deacon = queen factory. It's like a cluster bomb that could escalate quickly.

    I think it would have been interesting if the deacon was the predecessor to the xeno lineage as a whole, only producing actual xenomorph-like quallities when it grew into the mountain, and became a hive that produced the first legitimate facehuggers. That is to say, the surrounding fauna and flora would be directly derived from the deacon, as it became the environment. To put me idea simply, after having grown into a mountain, the deacon would produce a cloud of mutating spores that would go on to develope traits based on their new biome. The Spores that lingered in the in the deacon's interior latched back on to their still mutating progenitor like a parasite, developing into the first eggs, only awakening when a new source of genetic material was present. In short: The Xenomorphs as we know them are the decendants of the deacon that evolved to be parasitic, as apposed to the rest of the life on the planet that evolved into their own forms of hard to kill plant life, and harder to escape animal life.

    Ugh... what a mess. This is what happens when you get too many "creative minds" coming into a universe that they (think) they know, and then trying to be different.
    You wind up with a storytelling nightmare (not in a good way).
    Everyone thinks their "new twist" to the Alien universe is better and more "edgy", when all they're really doing is diluting the DNA of the original story, and convoluting and confusing the timeline and ancestry of the xenomorph.
    Even Ridley Scott has changed so much that he decided that the idea of Artificial Intelligence out of control was a scarier concept than the xenomorph.
    I have all the respect for Ridley Scott in the world, and I understand that he thinks that the Xenomorph has been done ad nosium. But look at where we are; it wasn't the idea of androids that put butts in theater seats. Once again, it was the idea of knowing MORE about the Xenomorph and it's origins that brought people back to the franchise in droves.
    That said, while Ridley is a phenomenal film maker, and his expert grasp on cinematography is unmatched, I really think he's lost touch with the franchise and why audiences return again and again to be terrified by the Alien creature.

      rockn roll totally agree. This is what I said after watching 1.5 fan shorts that started out with the fox logo..The fact that there’s fox logos at the beginning makes me think they’re putting a little money into a bunch of these to see if one really resonates and then they can expand it and make the next film along the best one’s lines. Which is such a diluted and artificial way of making art. I believe that’s the problem. It’s now so much more about business than art. Despite easily half of the best movies of all time were box office flops. And lots of box office hits turned out to have zero staying power or long term success. Take the goddam bean counters out of it and stop letting them micromanage everything. Successful writer/producers ONLY. Nothing about this post had to do with this video, just FYI

      Heyo Han Books/Comics/Novellas and TV/Movie/Video are totally different things. Text-only allows you to imagine your own specifics, nuisances and allows for a much more complete and self-satisfying endeavor because you make it your own. They’re not comparable in the way we are discussing the creation, application, and execution of these stories into film. That’s why it’s virtually unanimous that books are always better than movies because of the reasons I listed above, as well as others. Film confines the creators by technological and scope limitations, as well as budgets obv. Short novels, comics, and even some of these short films they’re producing are much more of a niche market and as much as the entertainment industry has focused almost solely on profits, those media types and formats will remain that way. Example: there’s a cool alien comic story about a crazy doctor who has captured xenomorphs and conducts all imaginable manner of tests on them, leading to some really intriguing plot lines and possibilities, but the scope necessary to attempt to form that into any sort of film or tv production would be incredibly daunting and would be hard to condense down into a sub-3 hour movie or even broken up into a season of 10 hour long episodes to do it any sort of justice. It’s just a different type of media. Both are have good things and bad things about them, but like I had mentioned, unfortunately finances dictate most of everything so there may be awesome fictional universes out there, very worthy of our attention, some (the majority) people won’t even bother unless it’s in a more “consumer friendly” packaging for consumption.

    I love the fact the mural has finally been noticed and the chamber itself reminded me of a chapel or a crypt as well a xeno nursery. After reading the original dark horse volumes 1-6 I came to believe that the goo was royal jelly or a substance derived from it. The idea that a droid created the species was an immediate f**k up for me considering the overlapping nature of the AVP franchise and many cameos of xeno trophies in a timeline before Prometheus. The deacon would be a off shoot hybrid only due to the trilobites conception after holloways exposure to an element that was derived from the original xenos. As much as I love this franchise the most recent iterations are completely out of sync with the rest of the alien universe and lead the story to what could originally have been an interesting origin or side story but completely destroyed the little sense it had instead. But it's just my opinion.

    The writers need to decide whether or not the engineers came first or the predators, then build upon that. In my opinion the predators seem to be more technologically advanced than the engineers, they could reference back to AVP, how the predators used ancient earth civilizations to breed xenomorphes for their right of passage. They could’ve used a different alien species that was a worthy opponent at the time for their customs on Engineer people. Engineers got fed up, fought back and used the technology left behind to create super soldiers, that we saw in Prometheus. Still holding a grudge, engineers created the black goo, with the intention of using it as a bio-weapon, but later discovered its genetic mutation properties. And decided to play the role of gods just like their predecessors before them, creating life on earth. Hence why they are seen still wearing simple clothes, keeping to the same customs of simple early civilization before the predators came. This would make the predators the actual bad guys. David The Android did not completely create the xenomorphes but mearly some what completed a recipe that the engineers prototyped to use as a weapon against the predators since they were so advanced in combat. They needed something better, stronger, and faster. Since the engineers had multiple outposts, let’s say one did complete the xenomorphe recipe we know today, predators discovered a worthy foe, taking us back to why it was used civilizations on earth. And why in Alien 1 a engineers ship is loaded with face huggers, with the destination of predator home planet, was attacked by predators, crash landed, and how the predators came into contact with xenomorphes. So this leaves room for a new species of aliens yet to be discovered, and a war between engineers and predators. Again this is just my opinion on how the story could be saved.

    I kind of like the idea that the "black goo" isn't anything created by the engineers, but rather mass produced by them. Imagine them traveling the vast universe, and they come across this planet that had these strange life forms, and they come across the source of it being this strange substance produced naturally by the planet. Then they take this substance and engineer their own uses for it. That would explain the mural (to me), because I don't see them creating some sort of church like room for something they created. Otherwise, where's the human's mural room? haha!

    The other weird hint is an audio queue of the Deacon. In Prometheus you see a flashback of the engineers running from something as you hear a scream from the distance. Obviously it's the monster they're running from that killed them, and possibly the result of a leak from the black goo that somehow contaminated the station that was meant to protect it. But that scream is the exact same scream as the one made by the Deacon at the end of the movie.
    Either it was a clever showing that there were deacons loose killing the engineers in the flashback (which would beg the question what happened to those deacons or any offspring they created), or it's just the film creators recycling audio so they don't have to make another monstrous scream.

    I‘d have really liked to see even more of the „original“ deacon in the comics, or even in Prometheus. I really like the concept of it and it would‘ve been really interesting to see how the queen looked like or maybe even how the facehuggers/ trilobites would look like if there was a queen. The comics kinda showed the new LV perfectly but I still prefer the Prometheus deacon over the aliens in fire and stone, it would‘ve given it a little bit more „twisting“.

    This franchise has been absolutely destroyed by all these "creative genius" types. Ridiculous.

    The real problem with 'Prometheus,' is it treats the audience as if they are unintelligent consumers and not fans.

    Imma watch Prometheus just one more time (it's my 34th, lol). I just love the whole concept for engineers, and how life was planted on Earth. Too bad many just wanted same blood and gore... instead of embracing new concepts and ideas. Haters gonna hate. You did great, Ridley Scot! 💯

      It should have been it's own movie instead of screwing up the already established lore of the alien franchise.

    Could have done without the deacon all together. All we wanted was an alien movie with xenomorphs and some kind of engineer back story. Everything els is complicating the franchise.

    Trash, needs more Giger! They should have went with his Version. That or Necronomicon IV. Other thing, it was a total waste of a Xenomorph. Just another throwaway like Boba Fett, Darth Maul, etc. Comic storyline didn't make it any better.

      I honestly think the prequels kinda helped it out but for some reason you need a deleted scene from promethus that shows the engineers talking and explaining why they're disappointed and think the Android is like a false creation. And that's why David goes and tries to make his own human alien hybrid. But you also need an excerpt from the last novelization of covenant to explain David trying to fix our human mistakes when making him.

      People get so wrapped up in this crap. Ask the writer or Ridley. Done.

    I still can't get over the fact that we could have had a really neat variant on the Xenomorph... and they turned it into a mountain in the supplementary materials.

    When you've retconned the origin of the titular alien so much it isn't even an alien - just some homonculus a gay android cooked up because of his daddy issues.
