    I’ve been dining solo for years. It’s a pleasure. There are plenty of activities to hold your attention these days (phone, book, magazine, people-watching, enjoying the scenery) or it’s an opportunity to chat with interesting strangers from near or far. I’m in several social media solo travel groups. One has well over 600k members. It’s kind of a movement. Restaurants are wise to welcome solos with open arms!

      He may have worded it badly but he has a point. I've been dining solo since I was 18 and even though no one was stopping you from eating alone, there was a stigma to it. In my youth if you were eating alone in certain establishments, especially diners, you can feel the air of judgment from others. The many couples will look at you like some weird foreigner and waiters and waitresses would purposely stall service in favor of those with couples or family.
      There was definite prejudice towards solo diners back in the 90's and 2000's when I was young. Nowadays, especially more notably post C-vid, there's definitely a lot more people dining alone and several couples learning to mind their own business and not look at solo diners as lepers. Millennials and Gen Z are definitely more tolerable and even eat alone themselves. It's the Gen Xers and definitely Boomers who find it strange and have questions because of course, it wasn't the norm for them in their time.

    Most wait staff are accommodating. But there was one waiter at a beautiful French Restaurant who acted so weird that I was dining alone. It was obviously his issue, not mine. But it was an awkward experience. Restaurants should train their staff to greet solo diners as usual.

    • @gee_emm
      @gee_emm Месяц назад +1

      Yes, or just be mindful. Offer a smaller table where the room can be seen, or a window seat, or a nice corner at the bar and perhaps a magazine or paper, then proceed as usual. Do not seat in the middle of a long bench, where people sit face to face! Do not offer unsolicited sympathy or ask why the person is alone. Just cater to your guests needs. No need to make a guest feel awkward when they are there to provide their custom and spend their money. Hospitality is meant to feel hospitable!

    I’ve been solo dining for decades. Nice to see things are changing but I haven’t yet experienced it. Many places don’t allow singles to get a reservation. Oh you see a 1 but many of the dates or times are full. Change number to 2 people and voila many dates times open up. If you walk in, I am often offered to sit at bar (tough on my 4’11 short legs and arms over my shoulders to touch table top), next to waiter station, next to bathroom, near kitchen door, in front of the front door. Any dark corner. One time I was seated in a corner facing a wall. I usually just find some places that treat me well and I go back often. If new place, I bring someone.

    Love the book that other diners have signed. Such a great idea. Went to Las Vegas to see Cirque du Soleil. I was solo & went to get breakfast at a restaurant in the hotel/casino. There was a long line & when I got to the front, the person asked me where my +1 was. I told her I was alone. She said, "But it's two for $10." (this was ages ago). I repeated that I didn't have anyone with me, and she repeated the 2 for $10 line. We went round and round like this until I finally said, "It's ok, I'll pay the $10." In the end, I think they just charged me $5. But that was when I realized that solo dining seemed way out of the ordinary to some people.
