Please don’t ever take this video off of RUclips. every time I pull out my Toshiba to transfer a VHS to DVD, I forget the steps. this video is so helpful and so reassuring and it has helped me transfer dozens of family videotapes onto DVD. sir you’re helping my family preserve its memories. so grateful thank you.

This was soooooooo helpful! I wish they made that finalizing step more clear.
I found out about it and then turned around my whole house to find the remote.
I saw that it needs to be finalized somewhere else but here it is all clear thank you so so much. (For a bit of context I'm a teenager, I didn't exactly grow up with these stuff...)

Fortunate to have access to this model. I watched several RUclips tutorials on this unit, BUT, this one is the most informative and straight forward. Very simpled and to the point. Skip the instructions and watch this video. It worked for me perfectly. Using these instructions, I just completed dubbing over 35 full VHS-c tapes to DVD... WARNING!!! while simple, dubbing vhs to dvd is EXTREMELY time consuming. Now I understand why commercial companies that offer this type of service are so expensive. it took me 4 days to complete my conversion.. But worth every single second

When you randomly find one of these units and are, again, randomly asked to use it, videos like these are a lifesaver.
Just for anyone else with a 620KU, the unit itself has a Dubbing button behind the glass panel on the front. It swings down to reveal button controls.

Thank God for this guy - I found his solution for why my family and friends could not view the copies of VHS to DVD I made for them! And shame on Toshiba for leaving it out of their manual!! It should be listed there in at least 100 places! Anyway, I haven't done a conversion for over a year, and forgot to write down what I learned here -- so I googled him again and voila -- I found it! This time I wrote the "finalization" steps down!! Again, thank you thank you thank you!!

The only thing this very thorough video didn't cover is when the video and dvd are completely finished, does the machine automatically finalize the dvd once the vcr has finished playing the tape? Or do I have to finalize each one? Just getting started on a big project for Christmas, will probably get the answer once I get to that point. But it would be helpful to others to know the answer. There are a lot of software options out there to add music or sound after your make the transfer. I personally use Final Cut Pro. It's great software. An inexpensive option would something like iMovie for the Mac. Good luck!

This was a good video but I have 3 of these machines so maybe I can help a little more. If you put in a new blank DVD in the machine you actually have 5 different time settings to record by. XP = 1 HOURS, SP = 2 HOURS, LP = 4 HOURS, EP = 6 HOURS, AND SLP = 8 HOURS of recording time. Just to the left of the red record button on the remote is a button called RECORD MODE. When you keep pushing that button it will show you on your tv screen how much time is left on that dvd. I have dubbed old home vcr tapes and movies from the TV, close to 5,000 of them so I do know this machine well.
NOW the longer you choose to record the worse the quality of what you recorded. If you have older home movies the quality may not be that good to start with so I would use the SP = 2 HR mode, if you use the 8 HOUR mode you will be TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED in the quality even if you record fresh from the TV. Make sure you check the mode for every new dvd you put in the machine. My best advice is for you to set it to the LP = 4 HOUR mode and you will get great quality for almost everything you record.

Thank you ! This was so helpful ! After having the machine for a few years, finally was able to successfully convert 1 VHS to a DVD with ease, following you’re clear instructions :) I’m also curious if you have any insight on this - I have some tapes that have 30 mins long, can I put more than 1 VHS on a DVD? I know the DVD’s are 2 hours long. Would that mean stopping the VHS when the 30mins is up, ejecting and then adding another VHS in ? Also would I have to hit the “dubbing” button again on the remote to make sure the machine knows to start recording again ? Any insights are much appreciated ! I know someone in the comments mentioned something similar but there was no outcome posted

Hi, I had a similar question but I just decided to try on my own so I can help you and anyone else that has this question. I had multiple tapes of 30min long and I was able to put more than 1 VHS on a DVD. The DVD can take up to 2 hours of footage. When a VHS finishes dubbing, the amount of "time" left that can be added to the DVD will be displayed on the machine (e.g. 01:30 means 1 hour 30m more can be put into the DVD). I was able to add 3 to 4 ~30m VHS tapes to 1 DVD this way. It will also "separate" them into different files. Hope that answers your question. Also, thanks for the helpful video @MinnesotaValues, was able to convert 10 hours+ of home videos.

I have set up a system using my Toshiba DVR620KU. I have been studying your method which you showed on RUclips. And compared it to the instructions given in the manual that came with the Toshiba Recorder. It differed a bit from yours and perhaps you can help me resolve the problem. For one thing I hooked it up to a small monitor using only a HDMI cable and it plays the VHS tape with no trouble and needless to say the picture quality is much better. However when it came to recording VHS to DVD discs. It makes no mention about pushing the dubbing button as you did. Or for that matter tracking. I just want to do a simple transfer or burning of VHS tapes to DVD's. I haven't done any of this yet so I just want to be sure I am using the right sequence which the manual is very vague in explaining. I don't even want to use the remote just manual settings. 1. Do I push VCR button and put in VHS tape? After Put in DVD Disc? Prior to recording do I Push Rec on VCR or REC on DVD side? I will be watching on the monitor the entire length of the movie from the VHS tape. At this point there is no mention of Dubbing or tracking in the manual at least not that I notice. 2. After the end of the film is over I would like to just play it on my TV to view results on the big screen. Am I on track so far if not can you set me straight. I would appreciate it. My email is charles.hili@yahoo.com. Thank you very much Chuck Hili

    • @gregcruze
      @gregcruze  2 года назад +1

Hey Charles, the portion of the video that addresses your question, begins at the 8:00 minute mark. Hint: you will need to hit the 'dubbing' button on your recorders remote control. I have not had the machine since creating this video back in 2017. I finished recording all my VHS tapes and returned the machine to my brother, so I can't remember exactly what I did. I have to rely on the video to remind. Once you have recorded your VHS tape to the DVD, you should be able to put it into any DVD player and it will work. I'm on Mac, so I ripped all of my videos to my Mac and stream them on my Apple box for ease of use. Good luck and God Bless!

I have been working on and off to try to get my vhs converted to dvd's. I am having problems with it not recording sometimes. I load the vhs tape and a new dvd, get the tape to where I want it to start. pause it, then hit the dubbing button. The dubbing light flashes on the Toshiba dvr660 recorder for a few seconds and then quits. Why would the process work sometimes just like you show on your video and sometimes I get what I described above. I have tried numerous ways to start again, unplugging the machine, changing out the dvd. I tried three times the other day to get a movie converted. The first two times it didn't record but the third time it did. I can't figure out what I did different. Thank you for any help. Also if you have any suggestion on ways to edit movies? I don't want to transfer a vhs tape made of my kids when they were young on the carnival ride the whole time, just edit out a few minutes of each ride.

    • @gregcruze
      @gregcruze  7 лет назад +1

Hey Joy, that sounds like a frustrating problem. Although I have not experienced that same problem, it sounds like there may be an issue with the player rather than what you are doing. It should work every time you do it. I converted well over 100 hours of VHS tapes and never experienced that problem. I once put the dvd in upside down, but quickly fixed that. I wish you the best of luck in converting your tapes. Regarding editing your movie, I would suggest converting your entire tape to dvd, that way you are sure to have everything you need. You don't want to miss some precious moments because you tried to save some space. Once you have your recorded dvd, you can 'rip' it with many different kinds of software to your computer. I would suggest ripping it to an mp4 format as its fairly easy to work with. An mp4 format will work well with almost all editing software. Then you can use something like iMovie or Final Cut to edit your final product. I wish you the best of luck!

The instructions on how to finalize are on page 32. I have no idea why there is no mention of it in the dubbing instructions. If they're assuming people are going to read the whole instruction book straight through that's just a bad assumption and even if you did, you might not remember it anyway. I wrote on my dubbing pages to turn to 32 for finalizing.

I bought the double layer DVD+R discs so I could get 4 hours of recording time on one disc instead of 2 hours, but it gives me an error message when I try to press the dub button. Do you know if the double layer is not usable with this machine? Thank you!

I'm doing this with a laserdisc player connected and it is telling me it's recording to the disc right now but I have no Idea what that even means because I know it's going to have to burn to the disc. I honestly don't even know if it's capturing or not. It's behaving oddly but the timer does seem to match with my laserdisc players time because I hit record right when the disc was read. I'm trying to figure out if this is a better way to capture my laserdiscs. I plan on ripping with MakeMKV. My other capture device is done through computer called Hauppauge PVR but that's hit a miss. Is this thing actually working with my laserdisc player or does this dvd-r only capture the vhs player connected to it? It's telling me it's recording but I don't know if it really is. I'm quite anxious to find out. I also don't know if I hit the stop button or the red/orange record button to stop it.

However I was unable to successfully record or transfer the VHS over to the blank DVD I inserted into the DVD tray. The DVD went through the formatting process and completed. That's where my attempt ran into a wall and I was not able to complete the recording of the VHS tape to the DVD. The blank DVD is an "DVD RW" disc. Can you tell me where I went wrong? Thank you.

The only thing I could suggest is to restart everything and re-do the recording process. If you have a different blank DVD, I would try that too. It's possible your first DVD was bad. I own a Toshiba DVR620 also. When I inserted a new disc (DVD+R) into the unit for dubbing it begins formatting, but most usually results in an error message telling me to remove the disc because the reading of it would not work. Occasionally the machine proceeds in formatting and allows me to record (dub). But, after the tape ends playing, the machine will not finalize the DVD resulting in an error which tells me it cannot write to the disc. I have thought of three possibile souces of these failures and would appreciate your thoughts. First, I believe the unit's instructions said the machine does not record on DVD-R. Is okay to use DVD+R or DVD +/- R instead? Second is the speed of the disc. A google article says older machines require a disc of lesser speed (perhaps 4x instead of 8x or 16x). Which speed have you successfully used? Third, does the time taken (perhaps a day or two) in between dubbing one tape to one DVD matter?

    Hello MinnesotaValues,
First, thank you for this tutorial. Straight forward, and easy to watch. Very helpful. I'm hoping you can help me with something. I bought this model in 2013, and have had it in a sealed container when not using. A couple days ago, I recorded a tape I bought on Ebay (vintage skateboarding), and the tape played and I recorded it to DVD. I noticed flickering/flashing throughout the video. When I went to rewind, the tape split, but I was still able to eject with no problems. I might have gotten a bad tape. I also experienced the issue where the model shuts down when inserting a vhs. However, I've played another vhs all the way through, noticed the flickering/flashing, but let it play. I was able to rewind the whole tape, and I went to record it to dvd and it is still flickering/flashing. It's not the end of the world, but it would be really nice to know how to figure out a solution to this problem. I've looked into vhs head cleaners, dry and wet, and based on mixed reviews online I'm just not so sure I should use these products. Also, there is a component that can be cleaned to solve this issue, but I don't think that's the problem. Can you help me out, or give any advice/links to where to find the correct information to solve this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks again for making this tutorial.

Hey Paul, I had a similar issue with one of my very old tapes. I was able to get it to work by adjusting the 'tracking' button. That may not work on the entire tape, but it might help. Here is a link to the User Guide. Good luck! support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=2805106

      Hey MinnesotaValues,
Thank you so much for the quick reply. And thank you for the tip. I did try tracking, which did help. Can you check out this sample video I posted? ruclips.net/video/aYd4mNPYPYg/видео.html At around 2 seconds into the video the white flash occurs. I've researched for hours and it could be a number of things causing this, and possibly the tracking. Any other input would be great. Thanks.

It's a cute video, but the flash is very odd. I've never seen that before. I don't think there is any way to eliminate it even if you used FinalCut. It almost looks like a camera flash. I wonder if its some kind of artifact of the tape itself? I know that is a stretch. It is something that I could live with myself. I don't know of any filter you could apply to get rid of it either. Sorry wasn't much help. Good luck!

      Hey MinnesotaValues,
Thanks. That was me as a kid. I'm 27 now lol. It's odd because the Toshiba player does this with every tape. However, I plugged the rca to the Toshiba, and the 3.5mm end to a Sony minidv cam. This is a pass through, and when I play the vhs from the Toshiba on the minidv camera, it doesn't flash. So I ordered a Firewire card, and am going to transfer the vhs tapes to my computer using this method. The only thing I'm worried about is image degradation. When I used the rca cables and burned a minidv tape from the minidv camera to dvd, the quality was lower than using a firewire cable. So I'm not sure if the quality will suffer or not, but I cannot think of another way to get this to work unless buying another vhs/dvd combo or getting this one repaired. I called a technician and in 45 years of this business he's never heard of this issue. He thinks it could be the processor and would be expensive to fix. Have you by any chance captured vhs tapes in the method I described? And if so, was there a significant hit in quality? Sorry for the all the questions lol. I do appreciate your feedback.

Hello MinnesotaValues and anyone else reading this,
I have an update on the white flash issue. It seems to be the main board that is at fault. I tried multiple things, and found this out with using justanswer.com. I was able to pay $5 for a week trial and got some answers to my questions. If anyone has a Toshiba TV, and the screen is just flickering on that TV, you can unplug everything from the TV except the power cord, hold the power button on the TV for 60 seconds. Let go, and then unplug the TV from the wall socket or surge protector. Then wait 10 minutes, and see if the flickering has gone away. Another solution is take the backlight down to 70 or 50. Anyways, I was able to purchase a used Toshiba DVR (different model but apparently the same as the one I have). I'm waiting for it to be delivered, but I will provide an update because I think it might help anyone who is reading this. I don't mean to write too many comments on your RUclips video, I just appreciate that you tried to help me, and figured I would let your audience know what helped in my current situation. Anyways, I hope all is well with you. Thanks again for your help.

Having issues here. Need help. When I do all of the steps i get the Red Circle with a slash through it..
    Using DVD+R Sony brand.
Does a DVD+R need to be formatted?
    1. Insert DVD
    2. Play and Pause Tape
    3. DVD button
    4. REC MODE XP selected
    5. Push DUBBING
After that process i get a Blue screen No video playing and big Red Circle with a slash.

I use DVD+R Verbatim, but, no, it doesn't need to be formatted. The only issue I see is step #4 Rec Mode XP. I think if you try and select a slower mode than what your source tape is, I don't think it will work. Can you use default mode? I think the default is 'standard' speed. Otherwise, It should work for you. Let me know what happens when you use the standard mode.

One other comment, if you look at my video above beginning at the 7:00 minute mark, I mention that you have to wait a period of time for your blank DVD to load. If you try and dub before its ready, you will get that circle with a slash through it. That may be the issue, if not, see my other comment below.

Figured out the problem. Didn't think it was needed for dubbing but the Source needs to be set on L1. Took a while but I got it dialed in.

Crs Holmes I think I have the same problem. What did you do? You changed the set up to l1? Not sure to understand what it means ! Thank you :)

Crs Holmes thank u! I am closer to being able to dub. This simple change got my dubbing started except it stopped less than a minute later though I think that’s a disc problem so I will try another brand.

I found one of these and it's a great machine, however, for the price they're asking on eBay ($200-ish) it's cheaper to buy an entire used PC and a video capture card. If you already have a PC, you can just buy a video capture card for as cheap as $20. Connect any old VCR to the capture card, and use whatever software you want to import the video onto your computer. Then, if you want, you can burn a DVD from the footage you captured. The added benefit of using a computer is you can edit the video in any way you want.
