I read this thirty five years ago and was deeply struck by the tale and the telling, but went on to forget its title and author and have been looking for it ever since. I am grateful.
Oh how wonderful you finally found it! I know what that's like, not only with books but music as well. Odd how wonderful things like that somehow get lost.. I'm very happy for you!
I agree totally with your opinion on the narrators voice and how fitting it is to a story like this. It also helps that the author is obviously of such talent that his works are still being read so long after he wrote them down and will still be in as many years into the future from now,God willing!
The writing in this is just beyond brilliant, I had forgotten how in-depth, descriptive and the excellent. Effortless flow and ease he has with the English language 👍🏻thanks, really enjoyed this story
Really relished the layered characterization of Villon. The way his inner conflicts and moral struggles are portrayed amid the stark realities of poverty and crime is truly compelling.
Books today are mostly garbage. Swamped with crime thrillers, all with similar covers, with contrived plots and boring writing, just to fulfill time-limited contracts. Actually this new millenuim is all shit. What a terribly era to be living in!!!!
I live in parkstone. A stone throw from Robert Lewis Stevenson Road in Westbourne Bournemouth where Mr Stevenson had a home and wrote along with Mary Shelley Frankenstein and many great books. This is a lovely short story and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.!!!
The story must have been reworked, perhaps I will find one or two after a search, I'm no writer it would be fun to rewrite this story in today's turmoil. smoldering somewhere in July 2024, if only I could better wrap my head around it's ending. Thank you, Gates of Imagination, for posting this delicate morsel.
You are a very good reader/actor and so easy to listen to. i was surprised at the suddenness of the end* as well as the ending itself, but a story like this in the hands of a master craftsman is emotionally understood and gives thought to the circumstances. so thanks much and i subscribed :) 🌷🌱 * (where you gave us space to react before talking, which some readers do not understand.)

6:03 for me. You could download an ad blocker if ads bother you to much, or a premium RUclips subscription, if you don't mind spending extra money. I just deal with annoyance. Good day friend.
Im sorry 1400s to 2024 u are a sum Total of yr choices Blaming others for yr poverty will never cut it! ❤Detroit Mamma absolutely loves this story ❤️ 🎉
I don't believe what the honorable gentleman is saying. Many impoverished people pray and have a good nature. However, they live forever in a state of impecunious.
In lesser hands, Victorian prose is overly florid and so cumbersome as to be almost impenetrable and frankly tiresome to listen to In the hands of a master storyteller like Stevenson however, it actually becomes literature. Well narrated. .
I prefer the fast read, it’s about how fast as people talk so it’s truly like listening to a story, the ones that draw everything out make me forget the beginning of sentences

Have you released these as a podcast? Or would you consider it. I refuse to pay RUclips money and would like to listen to them in the background 😅

What a beautiful voice! Perfect for this kind of classic story.
It sounds a little sped up though, unfortunately.

Beautifully narrated. 5:58
I really enjoyed this. I've met so many poets and vagabonds and this was their true same personality. Thank you so much.
Wow. I had never read or heard any RLS before. I am blown away by the wordsmithing and story telling on display. Masterpiece. loved it. .
No? He wrote in many genres...
You know at least one of his stories...does Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde ring a bell? Treasure island? Kidnapped???😊
Scott, try Silverado Sqatters & The Wrecker. Great reads
I needed to hear twice. Such a lot going on in this short story. Cynicism seems to be the driver.
The storytellers voice sends me back in time...most exelent
I am in agreement with your comment.
Thank you. How terrific is his writing. Very good reading!
A truly great writer. Such a contrast to the usual trite that is dished up.

And of course these days the mandatory gay
@@meredithisme3752the word you're looking for is obligatory; but what a despicable thing to say. I pity you your precious hatreds
Please find an older dictionary and look up the original meaning of the word gay. It does not mean homosexual.
Impeccably voiced 👍
Thanks Arthur!
One of my favorite stories, read admirably.
I love RLSs’ Work, what an imagination and skill for painting pictures with words he had!!
Excellent story!
This was a real treat. Excellent
Thanks for taking me away to that cold Parisian nightmare...

Lovely...author and narrator alike!❤
What a cracking good story and a terrific narrator!

A masterpiece ✨️
Such an interesting story, beautifully told, very attractive voice. Thank you
So Beautiful. ❤️
Villon played by Ronald Colman in If I Were King and subject of The Vagabond King. Great stuff. Never heard of this Stevenson story.

Nasty and bonkers then?…

Just in time for bedtime, really appreciated thank you so much for your hard work helping people like myself to sleep better 🙏💛💚💙
The down side is it takes me about three nights to listen to them cos I fall asleep half way through and forgot where I got too 😅
Wonderful story and reading!

I did not know RLS, was such a prolific writer.
I did!
This narrator is a modern day Alexzander Scorby
❤love it Detroit Mamma 1500 or 2024 we are all a sum total of our choices!
OMG the narrator is wonderful..

The commercials wake me up .
Criminal Minds defined always looking for a crime to commit even of loved ones, Crime makes Criminals happy.
But no, The poet vagabond he claimed to hate his crime, when he spoke of his hands.
too many ads!!!!
Hear, hear!
The video description really reads like it was written by ChatGPT.
@nutwatch1854: Thank you - We're sorry you feel that way.
Short stories end to abruptly sometimes.
Too many ads...I cant finish this story.
I have the skip icon on my phone to omit ads.
Why are so many readers in such a hurry?
Complete
The speed of reading it’s too fast.
You can change playback speed in RUclips settings
❤❤❤
So many ad it is so annoying
Why sooooo fast!
I don't believe what the honorable gentleman is saying. Many impoverished people pray and have a good nature. However, they live forever in a state of impecunious.
Damm commercials
Thanks for warning, I won't listen now 😢
Sounds like Benedict Cumberbatch a most awesome orator 1😃😃
Sorry, the reading is actually much to fast for such a complex text.
Reading too quickly without expression for me.
In lesser hands, Victorian prose is overly florid and so cumbersome as to be almost impenetrable and frankly tiresome to listen to In the hands of a master storyteller like Stevenson however, it actually becomes literature. Well narrated. .
Lesser hands? Victorian stories were written IN VICTORIAN. TIMES!? 🤦
@@emcarver8983 not sure the OP is suggesting it's not. Just that there were less able Victorian writers
The narrator deserves all praise for the laudable work he has done.
Listen to Olalla, that's tiresome😂..and it *is* Stevenson.
Read far too fast ... so no feeling!!!
I prefer the fast read, it’s about how fast as people talk so it’s truly like listening to a story, the ones that draw everything out make me forget the beginning of sentences
I thought the narration was excellent. Conveyed the time very well. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I'm not an English native speaker so keep slow. Or give subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese 😊
Spoiled by commercials- pity 😮 Unsubscribed
Commercials...like ads? Like at beginning or throughout? Bummer. I don't get ads so wasn't sure.
I was looking for an audio book yo put me to sleep. This did that. I'm now hoping it will do it again.
Supposedly the ads are necessary to fund the channel. Unfortunately a sign of the times. Nevertheless worthy content.
'Balard' ????? do you mean ballad ? ha ha
