The look on her face when Carter says “I think that part of the problem, don’t you?” Said everything. She knows how right he is, but doesn’t know how to change it
She knew 100% Carter was right, but despite all the evidence (ex: black is black, white is white) she couldn't do it cuz of backlash and feelings. "Oh no, phone is ringing with angry parents, the most important thing is basketball not graduating school!"
Coach Carter is a model coach. I’d stand by him; the media stood by the principal. He teaches the public to focus on academic performance. I’d vote to keep the lockout like the judge herself would. People like Coach Carter are just what society needs. He believed in a better future for the team. He taught each member of the team that their future lies beyond the basketball gymnasium.
This is a perfect time for Coach Carter to be mad: first, the boys sneak out to a party, then, progress reports or report cards with failing grades; he did nothing more than his duty by making the boys meet in the library, also cancelling practices and games.
I like this scene because it highlights what's wrong with public schools these days: lack of accountability. All the players had to do was make the grades and stay out of trouble. Coach Carter challenged them academically and told them they could go to college. You then see the players hold themselves accountable when they're doing homework in the gym.
This is how a coach is suppose to be. These kids are student athletes. Notice which word comes first. Athletics are a luxury and a privilege. If the student cannot keep his or her grades up, they don't deserve to participate in athletics.
I also recognized that for example, if they want me to stay after school because I wasn't suppose to do something that is not part of the school policy, I reluctantly did comply with it because at first, I was not sure if I should listen to it, but even if I didn't comply with it, it could have gone either way. Obviously, even though I am not in high school anymore, I hope we realize that doing something that is harmful in our life, it could lead to one thing after another. I am sure we do not see it this way until we start doing it.
I think every school needs a Coach Carter. Somebody who is willing to take action simply for the sake of helping his students succeed in life instead of just coaching them in something as small as high school basketball. To them it may seem big but it's not compared to what the rest of their lives can hold
I’m an Athletic Director and tutoring is mandatory if you’re failing one class! We are doing nothing more than enabling kids if we let them play if they are not passing their classes! Effecting change starts with accountability and it’s not easy at a public school because these kids are set up to fail!
woman: You challenge them academically? basketball is the highlight of their lives. Carter: I think that is the problem, don’t you? This rings so much truth today in black communities.
Well if I did not finish chores I did not get TV time when I was a kid. The parents don't care enough to discipline their kids and maybe he sees potential in them other than just sports.
I think that was the perfect response, the highlight of their lives should be something like their college graduation, wedding day, getting that big job, to getting a promotion.
"Richmond high school graduates 50% of its students, and of those that do graduate : Only 6% go to college. Which tells me when I walk down these halls and I look in your classrooms, maybe only ... 1 Student... is going to go to college. Well Damn Coach Carter, If I ain't going to college, where i'm gone go ? Now that's a great question, and the answer for young african american men in here is this : Probably to prison. ... In This County, 33% of black males between 18 and 24 get arrested. So look at the guy on your left ... now look at the guy on your right... One of you is gonna get arrested. Growing up here in Richmond, you're 80% more likely to go to prison than college. [...] Now I want you to go home, and look at your lives tonight. Look at your parents lives, and ask yourself Do I want better. If the answer is yes, I'll see you here tomorrow and I promise you I will do everything in my power to get you to college and to a better life."
And true to life, the parents are all for the status quo if it gives them tangible results and instant gratification. It's a lot like cleaning a messy room, it doesn't look like you are making any progress until the job is mostly done. Even if it doesn't look like it, you're still making progress every step of the way, and at the end you get the best reward of all, you just have to be while to go through with all those other times.
What I like is the primary and secondary messages. The primary being that school sport success is unlikely to lead to later life success. His methods give them the building blocks to develop as people academically. This then leads to the secondary message of acccountability to others. These contracts empowered the boys to perform an act that benefitted their team. They all agreed to gain good school grades, failing to do so means not playing and thus weakening the team. They came together as a team to make sure they all got grades before they could play. It's an important mindset to be in where you think internally 'what can I do to help others'. You become better a person as a result when that becomes the default thought process.

“Unfortunately Mr Carter you and I both know that for some of these kids, this basketball season will be the highlight of their lives!” Ok then what, what happens to them when the season’s over and they’ve failed high school? They’d be on a very slippery slope, difficultly getting employment, any job they do get would be low paying low entry level. The frustrating thing about most of the adults is they couldn’t look at the bigger picture.
'Challenge them academically?' 'And what if they fail?' 'Take away basketball, the one area where they have some success?' Wow. She talks as if she's already given up on them.

This is the highlight of Samuel L. Jackson's acting career in my opinion.
Eh I would argue that Pulp Fiction was peak Samuel
That's his choice to make

Coach Carter! A speech VERY well said.
One of the greatest movie quotes ever
Hopefully, we would get this message. This isn't easy to realize but not impossible.
It hurts my head how right he is but everyone else is more concerned with basketball then their education and futures.

Basically, we don't care, we just want basketball for this community who won 4 games last year.

Lot of truth in Coach Carter’s words
Accountability is important in education. Something that today's schools lack. I say that as someone who graduated from High School in 22.
If only schools focused more on education than sports
I don't think they felt like that all, but the lockdown changed everything.
