- Leah and I head out on an exploratory trip to Ontario's Port Loring region. Our route saw us paddle a boney Pickerel River before reaching the expansive Wauqimakog Lake and looping back through a series of small lakes and streams. A fantastic region to paddle with many other route options!

My had a cottage there from about 1957 until the late 70’s. Fantastic fishing back then!
Thanks Brad that gal is a perfect pick for you and your outdoor adventuress. Cheers
As soon as the present situation changes I am there. You both are the best canoe ambassadors for wild Canada.
Thank you for your videos they are so awesome there is no better place on Earth than Canoe Country
Thanks to you we open Ontario for us. Our first trips was planed according your maps and advices. After many years I return to your website and find it more informative and more maps and possibilities for future trips. Thank you for your job and all the best.
Been portaging that area since mid 70s as a kid. Beautiful and pristine. Spent many days fishing Hungry Lake and camping on island there. Great video!
Awesome! We loved it! Lovely backlakes to paddle. Wish we had more time to explore the Hungry Lakes area, the Red and White Pines in there were spectacular 😀
There's a reason while I follow you.. This is it! :)
😁 thanks! Glad ya enjoyed!!
Beautiful country. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching 👍😁
Stoked to see another canoe tripping report mid winter. 👍👍
Lot's more coming too!! Who knew the extreme cold of a Timmins winter would motivate me to edit up all these trips!? Ha!
Canoehound Approved Canoe route... great footage ... Dennis
I've spent the last few years exploring the Port Loring area. First solo, from Wolf river down through Dollar Lake and out through Pickerel river. Last year was confident enough to bring along my wife and three young boys ages 3, 5, and 7 going in at Ess narrows. Was an adventure we'll never forget. Plan on going back every summer to explore even more. Thanks for sharing your video
It's a nice area! Haven't been up to Wolf River yet, but plan on it! Noganosh and Island Lakes are gorgeous paddling areas to consider for your future paddling adventures!
@@ExploreTheBackcountry I will look them up. The upper Pickerel river ( I believe you're on in the video above) I did with two of my boys. I wasn't aware of all the low areas so I was only expecting two portages, so it took an extra day. Then we entered a restricted area as unbeknown to me they had expanded the Evac zone due to the fires so we were hauled out the remaining of our route to hwy 69 by conservation officers.
@@dustinblais5615 were you paddling out to the bay? I did that one a few times. Actually went through this summer just days before the fire started! Good thing you guys were safe, that fire really did a never on the coast! Yeah this stretch near LeGrou and Toad Lakes is quite shallow later in the season. Not often travelled but makes for a great adventure!
@@ExploreTheBackcountry no, I had planned to go only as far as the marina at #69. My wife and 3 yr old were with us for the first 4 days while we camped on crown sights at Dollar Lake. I dropped them back off at Ess narrows with plans to meet at the marina in two days. We got stopped just after passing a dock for the French river park. They had been ticketing people for a few days who had disobeyed their evac orders, but I was able to sure them the route we had been on, so they only had us come aboard and took us to the marina. We couldn't see or smell any smoke at that time either. The stretch from 69 to the Bay does it has some nice sites? I'm trying to talk my wife into doing a route with us. She has an irrational fear of bears, so the fact she stayed and really enjoyed our time on Dollar lake was a huge feat for her, she just wasn't ready yet for the river route.
69 to the bay is really scenic. The Pickerel River is shallow and a rougher go if you take it's southern channel to the bay (east of the westernmost the rail bridge). The French down to the five fingers is really nice, especially the old voyager channel. Awesome campsites along the Georgian Bay coast. Very scenic. If your skills permit and the weather is good, you can make the open water crossing to the Bustards; my favourite campsite in the Bustard is the northeastern one. It's certainly a lot harder than Dollars Lake area, bigger water, stronger winds and Georgian bay can be a bit unpredictable at times. It's an a awesome trip though!
If only my lady could paddle like Leah! Hahha we would cover way more ground and less yelling.awesome video guys
Scott Matthews haha!! Thanks! There's a reason canoes have been coined 'divorce boats'. Lol, happy paddling!
Cool video! My wife and I are planning a trip through Killarney this spring and we plan on filing our adventure.
Smell The Pines cool! Killarney is beauty location. Spring is a great time to avoid the crowds. Enjoy!
Hi Brad, I'm considering doing a shorter version of this loop. I was curious if you had any advice. After the Dutchman chutes there is a bridge, I was going to portage that trail South to West Deer Lake, and then canoe as far as I can go South out of West Deer, into Dog Lake. Do you know if there are camp sites on West Deer? I'm betting there are. Do you know what it would be like heading South into Dog Lake? Satellite map seems to show you can get most of the way down to Dog like fairly easily. Possibly pick up a little ATV trail and bush whacking to get there. Your thoughts? P.s. Thanks for posting these for all of us to enjoy!
Looks like a beautiful scenic place. thanks for showing me. Brian 77
Glad you enjoyed it Brian!
Beautiful edit Brad. Had me wondering how this was locked in the vault for a few years.
Thanks Jon! Yeah I kinda fell behind the ball with some of these trip edits. I didn't have a lot of footage from this one so I kept relegating it towards the bottom of the list. I think I only have 2 more from 2015 left? Hopefully they'll be finished soon!
Hope so! My contract is done in 4 weeks and then I'm hoping for camping early April with the weather we've had. But until then, vids are all I got to get by!
I'm in the exact same boat. Pun intended? Sending in applications but a part of me wants to bum around in a canoe for a while.
Lol exactly. If employers could wait one or two or sixteen weeks to offer me a job, that would be grrrreat.
Hi Brad. That looks like a nice route. I'm putting it on my bucket list. Can I ask a question. The Gerrie river that goes through big deer Lake. Do you know anything about it, I can't find any info on it.
Henry Mostert do you mean the Ferrie River? If so, I've looked at it but can't find much info. I envisioned paddling from Lake of Many Islands down to Wahwashkesh. Lots of whitewater and I assume there are no established portages. Looks like a fun adventure paddle!
Explore The Backcountry I agree I think this would be definitely a doable route. On Google Earth they're just looks like a couple of trouble sections that I couldn't see the river. If I get a chance to do this route I'll send you all the information
Is that barrel harness a Forest City Surplus special? (I have the same harness. North 49 makes some good quality mid-level gear that is priced right at most retailers... and no, I'm not sponsored by them.)
CJ ENTERTAINMENT CANADA you got it! I find the barrel harness holds up better than the canoe pack. I can get 2 years of use out of a 115L portage pack before it really starts to fall apart. That's roughly 200 days out on trip. Harness and barrel have held up nicely! Really good deal!
