Had a blast doing this trip in early Aug 2007 with the wife (6 weeks post-op), three littles, youngest was 8 and a Shih-Tzu. Less water that time of year but I recognized many spots. We put-in at Raven Lake and take-out was Wendigo. Great video!
Love the Larder. I was blown away by the scenery here. I think we'll be back in the future for more adventures. Sounds like you have quite the crew for your trip!
Hey Dennis, thanks for watching! Gotta love the thrill of the run. Looks like Sheree caught the whitewater bug now too. Always helps to have a mixed bag of experience in the group so that others can learn and develop skills.
It's a great one to paddle. The scenery is top notch. Reminds me more of stuff you'd find in the car north of NW Ontario. A gem to paddle that won't disappoint!
@@ExploreTheBackcountry Awesome, makes me want to go even more! What about for someone with only beginner whitewater canoe skills - ok to do, or better to improve the skills first?
Thanks a bunch! We'll certainly get at least one more long format video out this season and then a few more medium ones (20-30mins). Takes about 3-5 weeks to edit up a 45min video, so glad it was well received!
Looks like a very nice river that I need to put on my to-do list. Those rapids look like fun - a bit bony, but fun. I liked Leah's voiceover. Sheree had a bit of a trial by fire on her first whitewater trip; she did well.
Thanks Bill! I'll be getting Leah to do some more voiceovers in the future! Especially for our Throat River expedition. Sheree, loved the whitewater! She was a bit scared at first but quickly grew to love the thrill of the run.
Another incredible route in a seemingly endless supply. Your so lucky when you live near such great outdoor opportunities. I'm in the u.s. so I was shut out, we'll see what next year brings.
my friends and i did that trip 30 years ago. camped after fourth falls and watched the"northern lights". We had to stop for a bear crossing the blanche river. good times.
Man you're gonna love it! Was one of our fav shorter trips. I want to return in May for even higher flows. Good mix of everything on that route. Will be checking out some of the other routes nearby next year, very scenic area!
Grew up in the area, but haven't paddled this route yet. Almost did it in high school but to avoid crowds we paddled the Misema from Hwy-66 to the 80 Foot Falls north of Englehart. What a disaster lol. I might have to add the Larder River trip to my to-do list after seeing this.
I was in the aria early 60's, don't remember much but the fishing under those drops were great! Lots of walleyes. My uncle traped all over that area, I am Algoma from western Ontario.
Wow what an awesome looking trip! Used to spend time up in Kirkland lake and around Watabeag lake area. Larder looks amazing and would love to try that route. Thanks for sharing!

Well worth the wait - awesome scenery, breathtaking falls and rapids, impressive canoeing skills, and photography that captures the excitement of the moment as well the beauty of the surroundings. Well done!
I really enjoyed the video. I would never be able to do this trip. It was exciting to watch. I followed along with my topo map. I wanted to make one comment but you tube did not allow it.
Ah, what a tease! I have to wait! I'm planning to do this trip next year. But will probably end it at Wendigo Lake just cause I don't have a white water canoe and definitely don't have white water experience. Hopefully one day I'll get that training and experience.
@@dillonhillier It was an epic trip last summer. I paddled from the town of Larder Lake at their marina across the lake and down the river to Raven Falls. Day two I only made it to Ward Lake and got rained out so set up camp early and chillaxed in the tent. Finished on day 3 on Wendigo Lake. Plan to go re-do the river and start on Raven Lake and go down to at least the Blanche River. Maybe do the Blanche as well out to Lake Temiskaming if I have the time. The videos on my channel although my editing skills aren't as good as this video was. But hey, it's all about being out there and having fun.

Enjoyed the video. I believe you'll find a route description for the Larder River canoe route written by Murray & Vicky Muir, published in the first edition of their book "Discovering Wild Temiskaming" about 20 years ago.
Yes! Have the book, saw their write up on it after the trip. Description is somewhat helpful, but we faced higher water levels than the write up would suggest.
Just having the worst case of wish I was there right now! The place where I was born is calling me back from this western life I've known. There's no substitute for the Shield I guess.
@@ExploreTheBackcountry I would guess the Prospector is a wetter ride. The Esquif equivalent to the Moisii would be the Canyon 16 or 17 foot. In my expert opinion! Hahahaha! I have an older 16 foot Royalex Prospecteur. The rocker is 4". The equivalent in Tformex is the" prospecteur sport" otherwise the prospecteur is a little less rocked... Maybe 2" not sure. All this from a conversation last summer on a river expedition... ;-) I grew up in the Larder area... You have inspired me to go back there and give that river a run!!! Thank you!!
@@blackspruceroutes without checking specs, I think you're bang on there. The Moisie is certainly the sportier of the two vs the Prospectuer and definitely runs a bit drier. I've paddled a Canyon, but never swapping runs like this trip so I can't get a direct comparison in feel, but it's real close to the Moisie. In general, the TuffStuff turns quicker as the hull is a bit more rigid. We did a 3 canoe expedition this summer and everyone rocked decked prospector hulls (Royalex, TuffStuff and T-Formex).
