  • So, you're wearing your wig in public, and you're wondering if you should tell people it's a wig. What if people compliment your wig?! Should you admit to wearing a wig?! Should you tell your best friend or family that you're wearing a wig? Maybe you wear wigs to work and your co-workers always compliment you on your hair, and you feel guilt because it's a wig.... Are you lying if you don't admit it? Here's my perspective.

I’m a two time breast cancer survivor and I have Hashimotos and baldness runs in my family so I got the triple whammy. I never had really great hair before but now I have beautiful hair and when people stop me and compliment my hair I just thank them. It is MY hair. I paid for it and I earned it. 😊

First off, a very big CONGRATULATIONS on being a TWO time breast cancer survivor!!!! I wish you only the best & pray all continues to go well for you. I, too, have Hashimoto’s & baby fine, super thin hair that runs in the family. So I’ve never really had great hair either. I absolutely do not enjoy doing my hair because it’s such a struggle. I just recently, within the past week started wearing wigs, just mainly around the house, getting up the courage to wear them in public. I’m so nervous! But I agree with you, it’s OUR hair & we paid for it! I just feel like EVERYONE knows it’s a wig. But I think that’s my lack of confidence since I’m so new to wig wearing.

I don’t tell anyone I wear wigs or toppers. When I receive compliments I just say thank you & hope the subject is changed. I did have a doctor ask me right away if I was wearing a wig. I thought it was very rude and I will not ever go back to her again. I would never ask someone if they were wearing a wig even if I thought they were. I’m so sick of people acting like it’s a crime to wear a wig, yet you could have a head full of extensions and no one thinks a thing about that. I don’t get that.

Your channel has helped me a lot. I just discovered it a few days ago and I'm absolutely obsessed. As a gal who doesn't suffer from thinning, alopecia, grave's disease, cancer, or any form of a disorder that includes losing hair- I would NEVER say my experience would be matching or anywhere close to what people have to endure and go through. However, I've been a very low self-esteem individual all my life. Throughout middle school and high school- I've always wanted to wear wigs. I never knew why until I kept on trying to style it and the outcome was always me being upset and crying. I've missed parties, dinners, sleepovers, dates because of how little confidence I have. My hair didn't do anything for me. It's far too thick and styling it never seems to work or it's always at a length I have never favored. Because of this, I've never been able to feel pretty or cute. I love dressing up and being stylish and chic but without the proper hairstyle- my outfits fall short. So, back then it started becoming less of a "i want this maybe" and more of a "oh my god, this could be a whole new start" and so I asked for them for birthdays for years. I'm 21 now. I've worn wigs but never in public and I'd love to be able to have the confidence and love in my hair. Whenever I wear a wig (and I've bought quite a few) I feel like my most authentic self. My mother always mentions "what would a boyfriend think" or "how would you explain it" and the truth is, that really has my head always spinning. Wigs should be about the person wearing them. It's something for you to love, grow passionate about and to enjoy. I've never understood why so many people are so dastardly and rude about it.
It's unfortunate how taboo wigs are still to this day. You should be able to express yourself and seriously, when you said "when I put a wig on- it's my real hair" I literally started crying. I've binged all your videos and your expression and self-love-- it truly shows, Steph. You are absolutely glowing and it's so beautiful. I've always viewed myself an alien to those around me because of my differences and wanting to express myself through wigs and styling outfits. I shouldn't squash that brightness in me.
I only hope to be as lucky as you when it comes to wigs. You're beautiful and so strong. The confidence you wear is an armor that cannot be broken down. (Realizing I need to take my own advice, aha.) Thank you for being so utterly lovely and honest in your videos. I will cherish your words and I think I'll buy a new one and just LIVE.
    xx

Oh my goodness, I am crying just reading your message. I can feel your passion through your words and I’m resonating. We have had different experiences, but we are the same still. Our love for wigs and the fact that it makes us feel confident and beautiful.
You’ve given me another idea for a video- how to tell a boyfriend about wigs or how to handle that situation in general. I’ve been through that many times over myself, and there are some things I’d love to share about that too. (I’ll save it for a video, otherwise my message would become way too long LOL)
I wanted to thank you so so very much for taking the time to write this beautiful comment, share your story, and open your heart. It’s not always easy to share.

I wear different styles and colors of hair almost every day, depending on the clothing I choose. Hair is an accessory to my style. I rotate through my collection of 30+ of hair pieces. I don’t mind the questions because in am confident of who I am and it is my style that fits my personality. I often get comments from women that they wish they could have the confidence that I have because they would love to have the many options and convenience of wigs and hairpieces.

I love my wigs! I wish I started wearing wigs earlier when I was younger like you, when my face was not wrinkled but I’m grateful that I’m wearing them now. Each day is an adventure and I believe my 60 something face loses at least 10 years, with my gorgeous ‘hair’. I now have the hair I only dreamed of. I wore my natural hair for over 50 years, and it was not appealing, and I didn’t know how to work with it, and it did nothing for me. Then my hair started thinning and at first I was devastated, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise because I started wearing wigs. Now in my older years I’m so excited for each day- who will I be today- I feel glamorous! Great video!🥰🍃🌺🍃For me I don’t tell people I wear wigs. I feel it’s personal information, like when I colored the gray out of my hair😊)

Even though I am only 32 in comparison. I feel like you just described by my life with hair. It was not appealing and did nothing for me. Now that Im dealing with alopecia. Im forced to just shave it off and have constant nice fluffy hair. Instead of flat weightless fine hair that only does a pony tail. I can also do all kinds of colors that were never an option before. Im mostly worried about swimming or a very windy day. Where before I didnt have to care.
You are right, people dont need to know your life's history. Just like we dont know everyone's either.

Hi Steph. This is the first time i have EVER commented on a RUclips site... but felt the time is right! I love your approach and your wonderful common sense about wearing wigs. So inspiring! My own experience is: I'm 71, had thinning hair for years (it used to be fine and was pretty and i could style it and feel ok but... then hair loss loss became too obvious)... so i begun wearing wigs about 5 years ago. It took some courage! But.... right from the beginning I would tell people it's a wig, if i knew them. It was the turning point for me. In that way, i felt liberated and CRUCIALLY.... it meant that i could switch style, colour and length without any awkwardness. Otherwise, i was feeling limited to keeping to the same style and colour so that "nobody would know". I've found that the honesty equals freedom and all my friends and family just accept it and don't think anything of it when i change my look 😊. I agree that it's not necessary to tell casual strangers of course! (Also, I'm old enough to be less concerned with what people think). In fact, I've had a lot of support from people and also been able to help others in my position by being open and honest about it. Just be bold and enjoy wearing wigs! It gives me so much confidence and sheer joy to feel i look good and don't have to wear hair bands all the time! BTW...i don't even eat wigs every day. Often i wear a hair band and my own thin curly hair is visible but I'm fine with that. Next day... I've got a full head of hair😂.... who cares really? Just got to be ourselves, - bold, happy and at peace with embracing the whole joy of wigs Xxx

Sometimes it's very obvious that someone is wearing wigs and it's not because they're wearing low-quality. There are people like me who wear a very wide variety of wigs to work for instance. So of course my colleagues and customers are aware. I don't feel the need to announce it but I also don't feel the need to hide it. For a few years I would only wear the same exact color and style because I felt it was kooky not to. But I got tired of that and have traded in the comfort of wearing only one so that everyone didn't know I was wearing wigs for the creativity and fun of wearing a wide variety of wigs. It took me a while to work up to this. Okay I do always wear blond but very different blondes but that's the only common thread.

I have shared that I wear wigs with close friends but most of the time people do not even think my wig is not my actual hair. Most people are not the wig police and they don't even think I am wearing a wig even if my wig isn't perfect. Some people do figure it out and then I do tell them but even so its surprisingly rare. When there’s a woman that compliments me and I get a feeling that it’s genuine or that the woman herself has thin looking hair I say, “thank you - you can have this hair too!” Then a conversation ensues and a seed is planted to help someone else! But sometimes if it’s from someone like a coworker I don’t trust I simply say thank you.

People don't announce when they dye their hair or wear false lashes or false fingernails, or even when they wear make up, so why announce a wig? If you’re changing your color and length a bunch, people will ask you, but normally when I do that, they just say, wow your hair looks so good! Where did you go to get it dyed? And then I’ll decide whether to tell that person or not. Depends if I feel like having that conversation at that moment

I have the opposite problem from most of the people commenting here. My long thick super curly hair is so coarse and wiry that I can't do anything with it. I blow dried and flat ironed for 10 years, but when the pandemic hit, I just let it grow in natural so I didn't have to do all that exhausting work. I've wanted to cut it in a short tapered style for a long time, but am afraid that my wiry hair will not cooperate. I'm tempted to just chop it all off and wear wigs permanently. They say wigs are hot, but my own thick natural hair, which I wear up with a claw clip 24/7 is also very hot on my scalp. Has anyone heard of people with thick unruly hair wearing wigs so they can finally have that silky hair they've always dreamed of?

Hey!!! Of course!!! Wigs are for anyone and everyone!!! In fact one of my very good friends wears wigs on the daily, and her hair is SUPER thick!! She wears them because she doesn’t want to deal with her own hair (that’s partially my reasoning too lol- my hair is also wiry.. but also thin lol… and I don’t want to deal with it).
So totally, my friend loves to change up her look and wear straighter/sleeker styles.
