One minor assembly step to add, Jeff: Always unscrew the aerator from any faucet, showerhead, hand-held sprayer, etc BEFORE turning on the water for the first time as you'll always have some sort of debris in the lines - even if you're only replacing a hose/riser. THEN turn on and run the hot and cold water to clear out the majority of whatever is in either line before putting the aerator back on. Cheers on making a silk vanity out of a Hampton Bay sow's ear. 😉
I tend to turn the shutoffs on and clear the line into a bucket before I connect to a faucet because I've seen the cartridges get clogged. But yeah, removing the aerator is a good idea too.
It's true, and he's going to have extra glue pieces in the lines after slathering so much into the coupling. Pro tip: only cover the pipe. Otherwise a ton of glue gets squeegee'd into the joint. If you don't believe me, try it on some pieces and then look inside. Plenty of glue will still get squeegee'd into the joint and the joint will be fully covered, esp with some twisting action.

Yes, I like that he leaves the mistakes and troubles. There’s a lot of videos on how to remove a problem sharkbite. But they redo it after the fact, after they removed it. Then, they show you how to remove in a way that's not possible in real life. In reality, I had to cut some.
Reusing under sink plumbing is crazy. Spend the $12 and get new stuff for the new build.

You don't need cabinet washers for screws that are just a bit long, cut the screws and use a metal file to clean up the end, always works for me
I had no idea that the water line valves had TWO washers (one open and one closed). I never worried about having the valve all the way open. Thank you for that bit of info. Awesome work!
Slip fittings don't require teflon tape.

Are we sure that green glue will work with pvc to pvc connections? Everything I see online says not to do that.

Say Jeff. Do you need to attach the vanity to the back wall? That cabinet is not very deep and since its not attached to the floor and essentially only thing stopping it from moving are the drain, hot and cold water supply lines and that little bit of caulk. Maybe install it to the back wall using an angle bracket towards the upper part of the cabinet? It will stop it from potentially tipping over and being pulled from the wall by a kid.
I appreciate the look and layout of the bathroom. Personally, I would have used new plumbing or painted the recovered pipes with white spray paint to make the look even cleaner to the new buyer. And that screw can be trimmed with a good pair of electrical pliers.
Pretty typical for bathroom vanities. They are rarely attached to the wall
@@joseph7105 Depends on where the building is done. In some areas, builders still do custom, site-built cabinets that are attached to the wall, contracting carpenters who use high quality cabinet-grade veneer plywood. I heard Jeff mention this was not the cabinet (vanity) he originally intended, and that the one he used was out of necessity makes sense considering the high-end shower he installed with the tremendous custom tile job and inline floor drain. I can't fathom you'd purposely couple that much high-end work with a particle board vanity from Home Depot. If you've never seen one of those up close, you can't appreciate how utterly cheap those things are. And yet they still charge handsomely for them.😡

Since you switched the drain pipe to pop up, did you plug or cap the original drain pipe lifting stem hole in back of the faucet?
The pop up drain came on a new drain pipe that didn't have the opening in the back.
Did you ptfe tape the drain parts? If so which ones need it ?

Did you purchase the faucet kit with prior planning of not using the drain rod system and instead using the tap to close drain? Wouldn’t there be an exposed cavity where the drain rod WOULD have been? Or did you use a different faucet? Or did the faucet have an optional cap to close the cavity in case you went with the push to plug?
Jeff slides a chrome decorative cover over the water line, says we're going to make this pretty, then proceeds to smudge green pipe solvent all over the coupling right above the decorative cover😂
When you laid down and got under the sink is where I've ended up with lower back problems for like a week even in my 20s. the rig always does something to me to lay on it for to long. flashbacks. I'm not a plumber just a guy who can fix stuff for family.

Maybe, that's the way they are supposed to look , but it's not for me (messes with my OCD).
I always have a package of the screws for the hardware that can be broken off to the correct length!
Needed a long turn elbow from the vertical pipe to horizontal.
How do you use abs-to-pvc glue on cpvc? And then you said to use purple primer and glue (which is for pvc). I don't know about Canada, but in my area, that's totally against code. Those products are manufactured to work on their specific materials. Especially pressurized water lines!
That's a new solvent type approved for CPVC last year and should be just fine. Making it's way through the code books.

It seems like you should always do the plumbing for the fixture while you can access it on its side before you set the sink down on the vanity then huh!?
Do you have an item number for the kohler drain you used?
I know they say you can't use pex between the tailpiece and p-trap because they say it is a bad choice because it is flexible. But why is that bad especiallly when i see those OD pipes with the flexable slinky part that often cause issues?
Don't ya just love these $800.00 vanities that require another trip to the hardware store to complete!
Hey Jeff, I need to move my toilet about 3 feet from where it is. The bathroom isn't well designed, with half of it wasted with a countertop that goes all the way along one wall. I want to tear that out, put in a small pedestal sink, and move the toilet to where the counter was, so there is room to walk around inside the bathroom. Moving the toilet looks really hard to do. I will have to cut through the cement slab of my condo and put in a drain at a certain angle, and cut into the walls to add 3 feet of copper pipe. All the rest of the things you talk about I can basically understand, but am a little sketchy when it comes to plumbing.
Not going to lie to you, cutting through slab in your condo to move the toilet 3' over does not sound like a good idea at all. You don't know whats in the slab (like rebar or possibly wiring) and so I wouldn't recommend that as a DIY job.
Installed a cheap home Depot vanity in my bathroom. It was ok. Replaced it with a $1300 vanity. The quality difference is night and day.
Real diy and or building. Solving problems as you go. Everyones solution will be slightly different. The average diyer does not have twenty years building experience.
I could be wrong but those red/orange gaskets look the wrong way around. The tapered end should be toward the pipe. No?
Good video. Interesting. You use Teflon tape to connect two screw-attached joints in plastic drain pieces? I've always used Teflon tape with metal connections, not plastic ones. Have I been doing it wrong?
I missed that part and can't find it, but I will say this: you don't want to teflon pvc to pvc. Too much stress on the joint. PVC does terribly with hoop stress; same reason you never go metal male threaded into pvc female. Rectorseal is a better option if you need sealing. But for those drain compression fittings I'd instead lube the threads with silicon based lube. The sealing action comes from the rubber gasket not the threads.
@@trentvlak Actually, I didn't see him putting teflon on the pvc; I wrote my comment when he was talking about all the pvc joints and saying that he would use teflon tape on the joints, so perhaps he misspoke and never actually applied the tape. Thanks.

I've been watching these videos for a few days now because I'm a new home owner who wants to renovate my home. its already been remodeled once but they def didn't do things right but it still looked decent its just minor things like gaps in the base boards and a floating floor being put on top of original hardwood floors. Is it difficult to do these projects with no experience? I've handled tools before and did small contract work like running conduit setting up circuit breakers and building fences is it any different?
It just takes a little patience. I remodeled my bathroom to the studs myself after some ridiculous contractor quotes. My tip is to watch multiple videos for each step of the process - and then read the comments - because if the video did something wrong, people in the comments will call them out. 😂

Installed a Vanity a few days ago without an overflow, but the drain had the overflow hole (guess that’s what it’s called) and was leaking water all over. I had to purchase a drain without overflow.
Hey jeff, fun to watch some of your video and really love it. I have some suggestion if you are willing to consider them.
While I do know some stuff there a few things you never cover. Its part of being far in knowledge. and having some ingrained in your process(its instinct for you). So here a video that I feel would be better than all the good ones you have right now.
A) How to spot a saw, attachment or other need to be replaced. I see you do it and claim it by experience but you give 0 details on what your expert mind saw t that moment. I have a few ideas but ideas of someone with less expertise than you is just "Philosophy" and not the eyes of a pro!
B) Why do you sometime like in this video decide to rotate a bit your tool as your drilling those big holes with an attachment for pipes. I have a feeling toward it but hearing from you and seeing why would be great while seeing a comparison of the 2 way would be GOLD.
C) When is too little or too much of a product an issue or that its better to put too much. I know sometime it is, but hearing it is a great understanding of materials interaction.
D) Would you be willing to do everything wrong or bring an "idiot" in your work to do it so you can show typical mistakes that sometime seem just clever from a user basis but really arnt. It shouldnt be any shame to your guest but a learning experience to skip the bad stuff. We ALL have different knowledge base and based on free time you may be bad in other things which is fine but correcting mistake is what being a craftsman of any trade all about.
Conclusion: This is coming from someone with industrial engineering background. What I call a know it all that master nothing and MUST consult with the masters to provide optimizations of any significance in value. Therefore, I grant you will always know much more than me but I also know how the master forget the newbies stuff and sometime forget the most important details for us because its not even knowledge to you. Its a natural thing you forgot about years ago. Yet, those knowledge are the gold that made you what you are today.
If you have a video about it, please le me know. If you dont, that would be a wonderful addition that you could clearly claim "This is a video that will make everything I showed even better". Thats also gold to you!
U need to hold the CPVC fittings together for about 30 seconds to allow the glue to set up a little bit. Also, looks like you'
Used ABS to PVC glue which SHOULD NOT BE USED for anything else.
Reminder that the CPVC water lines will have water pressure, not sure if that glue is rated for pressure. 😮

I noticed the plumbing has so many bends. Was there a reason you didnt just throw out the old p-trap pipes and just plumb directly from the new drain in the ground to a new p-trap and to the sink drain?

Don’t use an impact to remove tiny screws from your cheaply made cabinet. Turn a screwdriver 4 times and be safe.

Way you have whole in a floor
I’d never use a power drill to tighten those screws holding the faucet handles on! Regular hand held screw driver. If you’re not skilled enough it would be too easy to break that top!
That's the stuff I have to buy tho because its the only thing I can afford :(

The twist on the drawers was because you nudged it after siliconing it to the floor.
I hate pressboard/particle board/mdf and the garbage they use for those cabinets at big box stores. I like plywood cabinets with real wood trim.
Composite shims or some sort of plastic spacers under the front edge of the vanity might be a good idea in case the silicone breaks down over time.
I guess its a good idea to figure out where the drain comes out of the sink before drilling holes in the cabinet and doing final placement.
I don't like the plastic style with the ball. I had the bar break off of the ball in one of my sinks. That was very annoying.
Really need to install the new pop up kind instead. I will say, the one good use for the top puller/pusher thingy is I'm using one for a custom lightsaber build. I went and looked it up and it's called a lift rod handle.
Looks like you might have 1.5" pipe going to a 1.25" tailpipe. So, you'll need the adapter which is basically a small plastic ring. When in doubt, bring the parts with you to check the fit. I find that I have to bring stuff and check.
I'm all about saving scrap pieces of pipe. I've had to re-use elbows and such in the past. And scrap pieces can be used for craft projects.
I do want to own every tool but alas, I don't have the funds or the space. LOL. Seriously thinking of getting an electric pvc cutter out of sheer laziness. And I like collecting power tools.
Since it looks like you have 1.5" pipe you need at least 3" trap arm length. Although, you only need 2.5" trap arm if its 1.25" pipe. Anything shorter and it creates a crown vent which is like an S trap and allows water to be siphoned out. The rule is the trap arm length shall be no less than 2 pipe diameters.
Installing to the sink first should work when we put a new sink in Mom's bathroom. Her current sink is avocado green. It's so ugly. LOL.
Ooh, do you have a link to the plate/escutcheon you put around the drain pipe? I definitely want some of those for my house.
Most of the installation instructions I've read for new faucets say to purge the lines before hooking them to the faucet so sediment and any dirt that may have gotten in the lines won't clog the faucet up. Sediment can clog up the cartridges and aerator. One of the reasons I usually hook the hoses to the shutoffs first is so I can run them in to a bucket until the water is clear (or just free of chunky stuff in my case since my water is never clear).
Since that vanity top doesn't have much of an overhang and the material underneath is particle board, I highly recommend a coat of poly on the front and on the tops and faces of the doors. My friend's vanity had the particle board bloat out at the front because it got wet. Actually, now that I think about it, sealing up the top of the particle with poly and/or a water sealant is a good idea before putting the vanity top in place. But even the laminated parts can let water in sometimes.
The last drawer getting stuck is something that would happen to me. LOL.
Oh, I hate when they short you on screws/hardware or send you two of the same thing instead of mirrored things so you can't put things together without getting more stuff. I've found that sometimes if you call Home Depot to complain about missing or broken parts they will give you a partial refund and/or send you some parts.
Next time, if you are anywhere near a Surplus Warehouse (aka Barton's Home Outlet or just Home Outlet) you can look for their unfinished oak cabinets. They are much better quality and you can paint or stain them whatever color you want. It's worth it to not have to deal with particle board crap.
I feel you on the frustration when the screw didn't want to go into the handle properly and just being done with all of the BS from the problems. At my nearest big box stores you're lucky if you can find the packages in the right spots and even if you can, a lot of the time thieves have torn the packets open and stolen things.
I keep wanting to paint the frame of that mirror so it doesn't look so distressed. LOL.

Didn't know you could PVC water pipes, wonder how that holds against pex and copper ~
CPVC is perfectly fine. It is much more stiff than pex, but it is more UV resistant and less expensive and you don’t need special tools to get it to work (such as a crimper or expanding tool). Copper is the best, but is more labor intensive and much more expensive.

#1. Why keep that old ugly piece of pipe, when it's sooo easy and cheap to replace it, AND, you can place it wherever you want. #2. You should have did it right and put the rotating feet on. #3. Why don't you just cut those screws being put in the drawers instead of using washers? There's only 2, and you just cut 1/4" off....easy.
