My guess is that it has been outshone by the Hughes Crab. They were the LMS' defacto mogul, and there are technically three in prservation compared to the sole survivor of the Stanier mogul (which I've never even heard of as a class). It's probably the same situation as how the ex-LNWR Super Ds outshone the LMS-built 0-8-0s.
I was watching some of your old videos and when i checked your channel again, woah! Another video uploaded. Thank you so much for your time and content Sam! Greetings from Mexico
Well, once again you hit the nail on the head with this one and I do like the look of the thing. On a different note, I purchased two of the weathered cars you had in the latest sale, so I consider you Santa now and can't wait for my stocking stuffer. Great review, Jersey Bill
The smokebox / matt/gloss thing depends on the locomotive age and location- various types of paint were used on smokeboxes, some with different chemical construction to the pigment in order to withstand the heat and therefore prevent rusting, however, according to my research ( spent a few years worrying about this) it depends on when and where they were outshopped, it helps to spend ridiculous amounts of time on colour original footage on RUclips- an easy way to sacrifice an evening or two, so you pays yer money, and necessary splash out on a tin of Humbrol 33 matt black if you are modelling a specific engine at a specific time... thanks Sam- want to see a baccy std4 mogul review which must surely be ready for a revamp, and of course the maunsell moguls must be in the sights of rapido etc al...
Funny story Sam, I actually bought one of these just before Hattons close down. She runs absolutely wonderful, although the rods are a bit bent she still looks the part. Cheers Jasper & Willow
Have you reviewed this before Sam? Can't believe you'd have had a model in your collection for nearly 5 years and not covered it on the channel. This one of my favourite models in my own collection, I've got the 2 you've not, the BR versions. Like you said the Mogul's weight is impressive. Apart from the Black 5 compare it to Bachmann's own 4mt 4-6-0 and the difference in weight is remarkable. Great job.
Never thought of it obscure, then again my dad has shares in preslerved loco and when was younger and dad had own steam loco on the SVR then the Stanier Mogul Fund used to let dad make use of their support coach at Bewdley on the back line so used to meet the team that worked on the restoration back in the 80’s. Really nice guys and well organised for preservation making sure that generate and raise the money for the next overhaul which is Had a run on the return to operation run last Christmas down the Severn Valley Railway.
A similar thing exists for the Robert Riddles designed standard 4 mt. I have a Bachmann standard 4mt in a 2-6-0 wheel configuration and a Hornby 4 mt in a 4-6-0 wheel configuration. Apparently the 2-6-0 stayed in service until 1967.
i never lied the. original. They were no better than Hughes's Crab and if anything slightly worse although not as bad as Stanier's Class 3 2-6-2. tank. He brought GWs idea of superheating, which was inferior to that already in use by the LMS. Fortunately they only built 40 of them before they started building the Black 5s, which really were a good investment for the LMS.
Bought both 42968 and 42969 when they were first released, love them to bits, useful medium sized locos. Interestingly between these, the Crabs and later Ivatt’s 4MTs the LMS and it’s successors had a lot of Moguls on rosta
Word had it that at a distance the Stanier crab resembled a Jubilee and i can see why! It had a taller stack or chimney similar to the Jubilee. They were a powerful loco, and well suited to parcels trains and used frequently on suburban work. In certain areas it equalled the power of a five. It didnt have a steam dome like an early black five, just a combined top feed /dome. As always from you an excellent and well balanced review on this lovely class of loco. Really enjoyed, cheers Nick.
Had an issue with my own stanier mogul a few years back, the weight in the body shell itself was putting so much strain on the model I kept smelling electronics from the model every time it ran. Took it out and it's run perfectly ever since
I was running mine today, it's a good model which I got for a decent price. And it's good for what it is - if only Bachmann did a Black 5 in OO gauge as well.....
18:09 : Could you unplug and run those wires below (in this case, above) the axle by maybe first having to remove the wheel set ? Maybe even get rid of(slice off ?) that piece which holds the wires against the draw bar, letting the wires, if they're not too long, just hang freely. Also the front truck is called the 'pilot truck'..When threre's a rear truck it's called a 'pony truck'. This is the first time I've seen rivets/bolts on the outside of the counterbalances on ANY steam.. Would have been nice to have seen a photo of the 1:1 with them. The sand pipes (not to be confused with the bird, the sandpiper 😉) are very nice on this.
It’s the baby five 😂😂😂 That’s what my friend called it 😂 The 8F is the BIGfive The Black5 is what it is ! The mougle is the BABYfive Don’t question 😂😂😂
To honour Staniers links to the GWR the Horwich works added a painted version of the GWR safety bonnet. His words are not recorded but in the article I read he was said to be not happy. They replaced it.
Yes I have heard of it before and I want one sooooo bad (specifically in LMS Black). Feel like I can never find one pre-owned and have the cash for it at the same time. Edit: fixed a sentence
It’s a decent loco, not sure if I would get one as my personal outlook of mogul locomotives is that they are not as exciting compared to other locomotives, while I don’t think they are the most exciting locos I will say it’s good to have the sole survivor one back running which was only very recently that it came back
I saw the thumbnail, looked up the difference between a Mongul and Black Five in terms of size and power but nothing. Then I clicked the video to Sam admitting the same thing about they look almost alike😂
I don't know if you know the RUclips channel SMTMainline, but I made him an S gauge American Flyer train set, and I'm sending it to him as a Christmas present. Also, do you set up a train underneath your Christmas tree? Also, I set up a window display at my public library with an N gauge train running around a Christmas village, I'll be putting it in my video on my Christmas train running session, check it out once I upload it
Has Sam's Trains *ever* mentioned one specific loco *not* being reviewed as often as he does the Black 5? (Oh gawd, he's got me doing it now!) Naughty thought ..... If the 4-6-0 was Stanier's edition of the GWR Hall, was this one the equivalent of the 43xx?
Would definitely get a few o gauge mk1s unfortunately they have been discontinued at least in ready to run form and they don’t seem to have a loco to match ☹️
I'm tired of guessing the odd one out. Your Stanier Mogul is beautiful the way she is. Aside from that, fancy some Christmas Cheer on my channel? My N Gauge and 00 Gauge engines are running side by side, with some Christmas music playing in the background. Give Parts 1 and 2 a view each and tell me what you think of them. I'm a bit more confident on the N Gauge side.
I think you have been harsh. You surely should not judge a 2017 loco by 2024 standards. It’s a lovely model. Like you I love Moguls and 0-6-0 tender locos. Better than a Northern pacific any day
It's strange, if you were to ask me to name a Stanier Mogul, I would have said the LMS Crab. Of course, that's wrong since the Crab was designed by George Hughes.
I've never heard of this engine and yet it's class is preserved
It’s at the svr number 13268 I believe
You never heard of a mogul? pretty popular in the US

I’m surprised it’s taken manufacturers so long to start the matte smoke box. Nice work Sam!
Just in time for my lunch break! Another wonderful video, Sam!

Honestly I kinda like the mogul design more than the 10 wheeler, looks pretty nice in the black
Yes i think the tender was exactly the same dimensions of the Hughes Crab. 3. 500 coal and water capacity.
Thank you, Sam for uploading the Bachmann Stanier Mogul!
😞Tsk, tsk! It’s been about a month since we last talked.
Surprisingly I've never seen this engine before. I really do like it though. Thanks for sharing this model with us Sam!.

Rather, a hidden gem in Bachmann's range
I think they should bring it back man. 😊
It’s been a stressful day until now 😊😊
Ahh sorry to hear that - hope you're doing okay!

The intro music today reminds me of being in a lift when someone drops one, but everyone pretends it didn’t happen.

Odd one out is 4F, at 27:34. That was designed by Henry Fowler, not Stanier.
is it just me or does this look more accurate to henry then the regular black 5’s?
I read somewhere that these moguls were nicknamed 'lobsters' as opposed to 'crabs' which were the Hughes/Fowler moguls
Awesome video today Sam very interesting model
Great video sam the stanier mogul is a nice engine to travel behind
Mogul's are quite popular in the US.. A lot of rail roads owned them.
Yeah I've just recently bought the Hornby BR Stanier Black 5 'The Glasgow Highlander' - interesting to see the difference!!! Nearly the same 🤔🚂🚂🚂
I’m thinking of buying a D16, but I keep looking at the Stanier mogul. Which would you recommend I purchase first? Great unboxing
they are pretty underrated locos to be honest

No not before Christmas - I will get one though!

No I haven’t heard of it but anyway nice video❤
Looks almost like an American engine. Add a pilot, trucks under the tender and a few other details and you have it.
How do they sell on ebay?
