Usually i dislike such obvious scientific inaccuracies since every star emites visible light, but i give Villeneuve a pass for the quality of his work.
I think the idea is that the "black" sun doesn't emit visible light, but infra-red light, so everyone there has evolved to be able to see in the infra-red part of the light spectrum. They would be seeing things "in black and white", but it would technically be infra-red

The amazing thing is just how _alien_ it all feels, every aspect of the visual and sound design oozes a feeling of off-ness and discomfort, with only a hint of humanness remaining. And it did it all without having goofy looking aliens with weird stuff sticking out of their head.
Yeah Dune has a really cool thing of showing that without much alien life, if given enough time, humans will become the alien life as our customs and biology changes so much
The Bene Gesserit's visit to a sister who is completely aligned to their plans is a notable contrast to their visit to Lady Jessica in the previous movie
I remember seeing snippets of this scene in the trailer and thinking that black-and-white was a bold, even strange, choice for this sequel --- and then you read the words 'black sun' and see the Duke's face drain of color as he moves into the light... that's real filmmaking genius.
Except in the book Gedi prime isn't supposed to look like that. Its a heavily polluted industrial planet, no blinding bleach white sky's. Its something that was entirely made up for the film.

This scene was filmed in Infa Red to make it look otherworldly, And the costume team actually reworked most of the fabrics to make sure they showed up black. However the bene Gesserit outfit turns from Black in the shade to white when under the sun, highlighting that their sun illuminates the world differently, and is what would happen to certain fabrics and dyes when switching from visible to IR wavelengths

Their ghostly appearance under the black sun together with the totally crazy culture and language makes the Harkonnen the coolest fictional faction that I have ever seen... It feels like the Atreides are wayward souls trapped in hell to entertain Satan and his minions, it's surreal.
also the 3 main Harkonnen characters (the Baron, Beast Rabban and Feyd Rautha) are *so* piercingly memorable. Incredible casting, incredible acting, and the entire package is so well conceived. Everything is so good.
With how well built up Arrakis was, these little teases we get and glimpses of the other planets such as Giedi Prime here or Salish Secundus and Caladan in the first film makes this world feel so expansive. I really want to learn everything about the lore of these planets just knowing how in depth the lore of Arrakis alone was.
Try the XD books. The quality varies wildly, but overall they're pretty good and really flesh out the universe. I'd definitely recommend the prequels about the Butlerian Jihad; the world Herbert build makes so much more sense when you know why humans are utterly terrified of technology even 10,000 years later. Plus, it's an interesting (if at times hammy) take on a war against sentient machines on a galactic scale. Brutal, terrifying, apocalyptic

They have mostly. They hold power in the shadows but they yield real power. They don’t want to deal with the struggle for power that would come from holding power openly but they have significant influence because they birth, educate and hold power with the women in the high reaches of power.
A major element of the series is the different ways men and women exercise power. The men tend to exercise obvious shows of power: military force, economic might, etc. The women use subtlety and intrigue. Their greatest weapons are words, both spoken in the Voice or whispered in the right ear. They rarely are the face of any plot, but are almost always the minds behind them.
I remember how i was a bit dissatisfied with the arena audience, they looked a bit too CGI-ish to me. But on a second thought it fits. It underlines the utter lack of individuality of citizens under Harkonnen rule.
It's simply too profitable not to go all the way with Dune and I'm sure they are aware. Can you guys imagine what other hidden gems are out there waiting to be brought to light like this? Well buckle up because they are finally realizing the gold mine that is the fantasy/sci-fi universe. We're witnessing history.
Just hope they don’t overdo it. Denis Villeneuve is a director who respects his craft, puts great attention to detail to craft such spectacles. But when he is done, who knows what will become of the new movies. Hopefully they aren’t farted out like Marvel or even Star Wars these days.

They have mostly. They hold power in the shadows but they yield real power. They don’t want to deal with the struggle for power that would come from holding power openly but they have significant influence because they birth, educate and hold power with the women in the high reaches of power.

A major element of the series is the different ways men and women exercise power. The men tend to exercise obvious shows of power: military force, economic might, etc. The women use subtlety and intrigue. Their greatest weapons are words, both spoken in the Voice or whispered in the right ear. They rarely are the face of any plot, but are almost always the minds behind them.

I remember how i was a bit dissatisfied with the arena audience, they looked a bit too CGI-ish to me. But on a second thought it fits. It underlines the utter lack of individuality of citizens under Harkonnen rule.

It's simply too profitable not to go all the way with Dune and I'm sure they are aware. Can you guys imagine what other hidden gems are out there waiting to be brought to light like this? Well buckle up because they are finally realizing the gold mine that is the fantasy/sci-fi universe. We're witnessing history.
Just hope they don’t overdo it. Denis Villeneuve is a director who respects his craft, puts great attention to detail to craft such spectacles. But when he is done, who knows what will become of the new movies. Hopefully they aren’t farted out like Marvel or even Star Wars these days.
