crazy and unfortunate coincidence: this music video was released on 9-10-2001 - very crazy and unforeseeable timing on Rammsteins part. and apparently, from what I read about it, it also began a dryspell on their success in the US for a couple of years

If you are referring to them, not visiting the US until 2010 that was their own decision, because they despised the foreign policy following 9/11

Old Rammstein may not seem so wild as the new stuff, but it's dark as fu***, that's for sure.

I like the song. Ich Will" by Rammstein is a song about the desire to be accepted, appreciated and understood. The song suggests that in order to be accepted and appreciated by someone, you have to be brave enough to showing himself and taking risks. The lyrics underscore the singer's desire to control the way other people see and understand him, as well as his need to make himself heard and to feel his presence. The song's chorus underscores the singer's plea for understanding and acceptance when she sings, "Can you hear me? Can you see me? can you feel me I don't understand you." Ultimately, the song is a powerful call to understanding and appreciating one's individuality and uniqueness.

In the USA, this clip was released in September 2001. The clip was not shown on TV for a long time after the terrorist attack. It was only shown later in the evening.

This was filmed in the former State Council building of East Germany in central Berlin (from 1999 to 2001 also seat of the Federal Chancellery) facing the site of the war-damaged and later torn down Berlin Palace, the former main Prussian royal and German imperial residence. The palace has since been rebuilt as a replica (Humboldt Forum). One of the original facade portals of the old royal palace (Portal IV) was incorporated into the State Council building during its construction in the early 1960s.

Rammstein is a band like no other for me for one reason, besides the sound and the live performance. Imagine speaking a language that is spoken by less than 2 % of earth's population, and you hear a foreign guy singing "Könnt ihr mich hör'n? Wir hören dich nicht. Könnt ihr mich seh'n? Wir sehen dich nicht. Könnt ihr mich fühlen? Wir fühlen dich nicht. Ich versteh' euch nicht.". To me, as a Bavarian man, that is something very special. I married a British woman. She expects that most people have a grasp on her mother tongue. When a foreigner sings a song in English, that's barely anything special. When any person from anywhere else makes an album in English, that's nothing special anymore. But when, let's say Peter Gabriel re-writes and re-records one of his albums in German, or any other language, that is something special. And when a band like Rammstein gets popular around the world, that is something very very special. I get that not everyone likes Rammstein the same way I do. I love them and their music wholeheartedly. It makes me proud to hear foreigners sing their songs in my mother tongue. And when they roll the "R" like Till Lindemann does, it's just the icing on the cake.

Just a bit off topic maybe: As you are music video producers, I'd be interested if you know / are aware of the Directors Label video collection of music videos by music video directors Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, Michel Gondry, Mark Romanek, Jonathan Glazer, Anton Corbijn and Stéphane Sedanoui.
I became aware after visiting the "Spectacle" music video exhibition some time in Melbourne when on vacation.
Some of my favorites would be for the directors:
    *Mark Romanek:*
    - 'Scream' - Michael & Janet Jackson
    - 'Bedtime Story' - Madonna
    - 'Jump they say' - David Bowie
    - 'Are you gonna go my way' - Lenny Kravitz
    - 'Free your mind' - En Vogue
    *Jonathan Glazer:*
    - 'Virtual Insanity' - Jamirpquai
    *Chris Cunningham:*
    - 'Come to daddy' and 'Windowlicker' - Aphex Twin
    - 'All is full of love' - Björk
    *Michel Gondry:*
    - 'Come into my world' - Kylie Minogue
    - 'Star Guitar' - The Chemical Brothers
    - 'Around the world' - Daft Punk
    - 'Sugar Water' - Cibo Matto
    - 'Isobel' - Björk
    *Spike Jonze:*
    - 'Weapon of Choice' - Fatboy slim (Spike Jonze made a Kenzo advert a few years ago, citing his music video)
Another crazy music video is 'This too shall pass' by OK Go featuring a Rube Goldberg machine

I assume the inspiration for the song and the video was a true crime. In 1988 there was a bank heist in Germany (Gladbeck), after which the perpetrators fled and took hostages. During the escape, journalists conducted several interviews with the perpetrators and obstructed police work. After 54 hours of flight through almost half of Germany, the perpetrators were caught. Two hostages and a policeman were killed. The behavior of the journalists, who hindered the work of the police due to their close proximity to the events, later sparked an intensive public debate.
In the video Rammstein seems to provoke media attention by the heist, not primarely to steal money. The line "Wir wollen in Beifall untergehen." (We want to drown in applause.) indicates it. The live version of this song (e.g. Ich will - live from Hurricane Festival 2016) shows a great involvement of the audiance.

Checkout for the Gladbeck hostage in Germany in 1988, and you will understand what the message is about. In my opinion.

The song is about a robbery. The robbers were driving around in a bus with hostages and kept stopping to give interviews to reporters. Rammstein has published songs about criminal cases several times, such as the case of Armin Meiwes and the unbelievably cruel case of Josef Fritzel. In the former, I personally do not care about the victim, because he wanted this, in the 2nd case I just want to puke. As I understand it, the victim of Josef Fritzel was asked whether she agreeds that the song may be published.

  • @JakobFischer60

The lyrics do not fit to the video. The video is inspired by the Gladbach hostage taking where two criminals flew from prision and took people hostage. They were followed by the police for 3 days and gave interviews to the press in city centers. They shot some of the hostages and finally were captured.
The life performance is to communicate with the audience and Till loves that dialogue with questions and answers.
