- Are bigger boats better than little boats? What is the best size boat for a beginner? Is it a good idea to buy a big boat or the biggest boat you can afford? Maybe not. In this video I discuss some of the advantages smaller boats for newer boaters and how big boats can be much more costly to maintain than a small boat. If you are a beginner, boat shopping can be challenging. If you want all the features, options and accessories, those things can often mean more headaches as they wear out, fail or break. Tiny boats are much simpler to take care of, winterize and maintain when compared to larger boats. If you're doing a boat size comparison, consider the costs that might be associated with a larger boat.

0:06 I'm a fellow boat person, big is good, long is fine, but wide is best, a 2L:1w is a great ratio for a boat, if yea got a 10 footer, try to find one that's atleast 5ft wide, it's stable to stand up in, and if the weather turns unexpectedly ,it's a more steady (less roll fr side to side) in a fallowing or side one swell
some of the most fun we've had are with our smaller boats. YOu can take them anywhere, you're not as worried about dinging them up. bigger boat, more insurance, burns more gas etc. :)

Everyone has different priorities, for us we’re weekend boaters and want the cabin space so bigger is better 😊

I have heard overnight boats referred to as “Weekenders”, “Cuddy Cabins” and “Cruisers”. Are there differences in those three terms? Perhaps you could do a video on that, for beginners like me who get confused by the various types of boats that can be used for an overnight trip.

At the moment I just have a 9 foot livingston dual hull with a 4hp 1985 evinrude 2 stroke outboard, and soon I'm going to upgrade to an 11ft v hull aluminum boat, and I might upgrade to an 8hp motor to have more power and speed. I'm super happy with my simple setup. If I take care of my boats and motors they will last a really long time. Heck my 1985 evinrude runs great and it's almost 40 years old. Seems definatly it was only lightly used, since it has great compression. Also since the motor is simple technology, it's easy and cheap to maintain. When people say boats are money pits they are mainly talking about the larger ones. Little boats provide so much fun at a fraction of the cost.
Great video Wayne. My 21' cuddy cabin is just the right size for towing around and it can handle the ocean on most summer days. It provides us with all the problems we're willing to deal with.
How much does gas cost? I always hear about how much boats costs and it’s ridiculous but I just don’t believe any of it.

Normally they are 8' wide and have outboards but some have a small 3cyclnder diesel, with a straight shaft an brass prop. very easy to maintain and tows on a trailer like a 23 foot imboard

Love my 14' v hull. It's a classified "tiny boat," at that size, I believe, but it's just so simple and efficient. I don't need break neck speeds. I'm not a tournament angler. I don't need livewells. I have a 9.9 motor that doesn't require a license. I can pick it up off the transom myself no problem. Has a minn kota power drive with ipilot, so that's the anchor. Don't have to register the trailer. Easy to tow and self launch. Plenty of space for two adults. And even though it's just a 14-footer it has two casting decks and comfy seats. One 12 volt battery can power everything I need for a whole day. That and a 3 gallon gas can. There's a fish finder a bilge pump and the lights to be legal. When you pair that with spot lock it's a fish machine. Just not a very fast moving one or big one 😜. Less problems lol.
Yeah me and my dad thought we scored a good deal on starcraft 20 ft fiberglass with inboard ford 302 and all he had was half ton truck tlbut the boat trailer was only single axle so it was scary pulling it out to lake to test it out for first time since he bought it every time when a bump or had to slow down we thought something was going break on the truck we found out later that wasn't the right trailer pulling the boat with it supposed to be tandom axles boat trailer I'm glad Nutting never broke though nice video BTW explained why you don't always need a bigger boat to have fun❤

It all depends. Factors to consider. where do you go boating at? Depends on your tow vehicle? If it's a first boat nothing bigger than 25'. When I get a boat 19-23' cuddy cabin ideal size for the lakes and rivers that I would boat on. Can waterski behind it. chill in the cabin from the sun. Use it more often than a bigger boat. I would only need a 1/2 ton truck or full size SUV to tow with.

That's a good question! Lowe makes a V 1460 Utility Boat that has them - and that might be the largest.

I was surprised to not find the length listed under "dimensions" on the Lowe's website but a bit more searching found a length of 14' 1".
Great video. It would be useful if you could breakdown the cost of owning a used boat other than the fuel cost. We are looking to get to a 20-24 foot boat and the very little info out there seems to say that they require a lot of work and the cost will add up quickly. We are looking at used boats. It would be really helpful to get a solid perspective
A used boat is closer to needing more complex maintenance than a new boat. They also might need batteries, new hoses/fuel lines, replacing broken/worn hardware and accessories right away. Depending on what maintenance is documented and how it was used and where it was used have a lot to do with "how soon" some parts might need attention. An 'occasional use' fresh water only boat on a trailer may be in very different condition than a salt water boat stored in the water.

Just got my first boat a few months ago. It’s a 20 foot 1990 Four Winns 200 Horizon I/O engine open bow. My friends dad moved to florida and didn’t want it so he sold it to me for $1,000 bucks

I agree with you. A bigger boat is more maintenance. The smaller size, convenience, and mobility come with smaller boats.
And all the extra work gets old quickly!
I got hooked on boats by rowing a 8' flat bottom jon boat up and down the rivers where I grew up. My dad always had a boat during my childhood, a 17' Starcraft aluminum with a 75hp Evinrude and then a 17' Larson All American fiberglass I think it was called, with a 115hp Johnson. I went in the Army in 76' and other than RB-7's and 15's with the occasional Zodiac throw in as well as some Mike boats, I haven't had a boat I could call my own. I am 64 now and am looking at a 23' fishing boat with a single outboard. What the hell.

When you buy junk you will as a rule get junk. lol
I disagree with that rule. Over my many years, I have bought things that were supposed to be good, and had bad luck with them and vice-versa. I've bought cars that everyone said "they're the best!" and been burned. Conversely, I've bought cars that everyone said "Avoid at all costs" and had great luck.
A good 16 foot aluminum deep v or a large inflatable boat is all I've ever needed or wanted. I live in S. florida and Rigid Inflatables are super sea worthy for their small size. Hell you can go to Bimini on a 15 foot Zodiac!

100percent. Although this didn’t apply in my situation it’s a similar story. I really liked the seadoo speedster 200. Like a lot a lot. But I’m forced to have twin 1630 rotax 3 cylinders N/A for the base or supercharged if I want any incredible power. I happily would settle for N/A models which did have plenty to get you around… but twin engine, in board, cramped engine bay was a big no for me(also note that I am only 18 and haven’t owned a boat but work a good government job with good pay and benefits). So even though this is very costly for me at the moment I’d love a Tahoe 210S outbound boat. Single mercury marine outboard and fairly simple. It’s newer so I’m looking for more information on that powerglide hull. The inbound variant has a 6.2 liter 300 horsepower output. I’d love at least 300 horsepower but I want the outboard to maintain as much seating and ease of maintenance as possible. And the 200 doing 51 mph with perfect conditions ain’t bad anyways. May just settle with it.

Your videos are so educational and information. One of my biggest issue is that I do not own a truck or a suv/jeep to be able to tow. I think I should first invest in a vehicle which can tow couple of thousand lbs, but it will probably cost more than the used boat. Are there any rental options for motor boats? Just rent it a day and leave it at the dock? That would be my perfect solution. Thanks once again for taking the time to put such informative videos. It really helps blokes like me..
Thank you so much! For some of us it's hard to justify owning a big vehicle just to tow a boat. Yes, some places rent boats, or you can buy a small boat that can be pulled by most anything or lastly, join a boat club (I'll have video about boat clubs in a few days!)
@@WayneTheBoatGuy Thank you so much. Small boats are a great way to learn and storage is not as much of an issue as bigger boats. It requires much less time for upkeep.
17 to 19ft for a bay boat - 19 to 21 for an inshore boat 22 to 24ft for single handed operation - power winch if trailering - power anchor over 24 - center consoles are great - no Tee-Tops under 8ft beam! Work style boats have to make financial sense re fuel.

How much does the boat you currently own weight ?
It's dry weight is listed almost 4,500 lbs. But I am not sure with the trailer and stuff. My ramp is really quite steep. My truck did manage to pull it out one time, but it fussed quite a bit, so I don't try that any more.
